It is day 16 of the government shutdown. Gavin Newsom believes California's detractors have California derangement syndrome. And Kamala Harris is making news again on her book tour. All of that and so much more today on 10 Minute Drill. The story of America is the story of an adventure.

It is now day 16 of the Federal government shutdown. I have talked before about the longer this goes on, the worse it gets for Democrats because people are coming to understand just how absurd their demands are as they actively make the choice to keep our federal government shut down with no message and no strategy. A new poll from the Hill confirms that poll finds more people are starting to blame Democrats for shutdowns. One poll that's taken twice over the last week has shown a five point move towards people blaming Democrats for this shutdown. Perhaps it's because they've watched Democrats on TV fail to make a compelling argument for why they need to shut down the government. One reason that Republicans believe Democrats are prolonging their shutdown is an upcoming protest called the no Kings rally.
Conservative Commentator
I don't think it will end before the Hate America rally on the Mall on Saturday where all the Marxists and antifa people and all the people who hate Trump and hate America will be there.

You'll remember back in June we covered the first no Kings protest which was essentially a dark money group bazaar gathering together, paying protests, paying to organize groups to come out and bash President Trump under the banner of no Kings, which is absurd for so many reasons. But take a look at this long laundry list of dark money groups involved here. Indivisible is one of the Ankh organizations. They're funded by George Soros, the Tides foundation and every dark money group you can think of. You'll notice a number of teachers unions, federal government labor unions who currently are not working because their party shut down the federal government. But I'd also point out the irony of a no Kings protest that is largely being funded by foreign oligarchs. Whether it's George Soros, Hans Jorg Wyss, a number of these left wing luminaries from other countries where they actually do have kings. But of course, as you see video and pictures come out from the protest this weekend, you'll notice that it is a group of the BlueAnon Karen types that we've talked about previously before here who live on TikTok and Instagram and get Indoctrinated against Republicans and President Trump all day long. At the same time, President Trump is working to find ways to pay our troops and Democrats aren't happy about it. This in Axios, Speaker Mike Johnson said at a press conference the administration has every right to move funds around, duly appointed dollars from Congress to the Department of Defense, but Democrats are pushing back. Jamie Raskin says only Congress has the authority to appropriate money to a federal expenditure. It's not like a big fungible fund of money that Donald Trump can take from here and put over there. Jim Himes says it almost certainly illegal to move money around. But Speaker Mike Johnson says if the Democrats want to go to court and challenge troops being paid, bring it. So just to break down the dynamics of what's happening there, President Trump is trying to find a way to mitigate the damage of the Democrat shutdown to get our troops and their families paid. Democrats are working against him because they want this shutdown to be as painful as possible while they push for political agenda items like the restoration of all the Doge cuts and every absurd thing that they're demanding here. That is why, as we talked about at the beginning of this segment, more and more voters are blaming Democrats for the shutdown and demanding that they end it. Tonight, candidates for Virginia attorney general will face off. Embattled Jay Jones, who's been under fire for several weeks now after sending messages that he would like to one, see his political opponents die and two, watch their children die, will face off against Jason Miares, who polls have shown may have pulled ahead of J. Jones. We will see if Jones employs Abigail Spanberger's much criticized debate strategy.
Kamala Harris
Would it take him pulling the trigger? Is that what would do it? And then you would say he needs to get out of the race, Abigail, you have nothing to say?
Host
Abigail? Whatever strategist told Abigail Spanberger that staring straight ahead and ignoring questions was the best way to deal with this should never work in a campaign. Again, we will see how Jay Jones handles these questions. He's tried to apologize and walk it back, but one of the challenges for him has been things have only gotten worse after that first revelation about murdering his political opponents and watching their children die. Revelations have followed showing him saying things like he'd be comfortable watching police officers die or that he also was closely aligned with the anti police movement after the death of George Floyd. So we'll watch and see where this goes. But this is an incredibly close election that also has major, major ripple effect on the gubernatorial race where J. Jones appears to be pulling Down Abigail Spamberger with him. Earlier this week, Gavin Newsom defended himself against criticism from Joe Rogan and others about how he has handled challenges in California. But first, here's Joe Rogan.
Joe Rogan
They don't have any faith in Gavin Newsom. Oh, it's kind of funny because he wants to be president so bad.
Conservative Commentator
That's true.
Joe Rogan
What it looks like. You can't ruin a city and then go on to ruin a state and say, guys, that was just practice. I know once I get it as a president, I'm going to fix it. The things that he says when he gets confronted with the wear the highest this and the highest that, like, everybody's leaving. You have the highest unemployment, you have the highest homelessness. They with Hollywood, you missing, you killed Hollywood. Like, Hollywood doesn't exist anymore.
Host
So that is Joe Rogan talking about how Gavin Newsom can never be president after destroying first the city of San Francisco, then the state of California. The other thing that Rogan points out that I think is kind of funny is he's got no competition, which when you look at the current pool running to replace Gavin Newsom, Katie Porter, Batgirl, we can't get enough of Katie Porter. But here's how Gavin responded to Rogan.
Gavin Newsom
I think there's a California derangement syndrome, and he's part of it. I mean, I think people are obsessed with focusing on what's wrong with the state and not what's right with the state. I mean, you have more scientists, engineers, more researchers, more Nobel laureates in the state than any other state in the nation. We're the fourth largest economy in the world, $4.1 trillion with the finest system of higher education that addresses the issue of equity.
Host
So you'll note that Gavin's rebuttal to Rogan saying that Gavin's defenses of California are weak because he just talks about how we have the highest number of people, the highest number of whatever, the biggest economy. He doubled down and said the exact same thing. We have the biggest economy, we have the most scientists, we have the most Nobel laureates, we have the biggest companies. But my question in response to that is this. Are there more companies moving into California under Gavin Newsom and due to his policies, or are more moving away? Are more scientists moving into California under Gavin Newsom or are more moving away? I know the answer to that. It is people are moving away from California very quickly because of Gavin Newsom and his policies. Tesla, Chevron, Oracle, Charles Schwab, Hewlett Packard, Enterprise, all have left California under Gavin Newsom. Many of them, like Chevron, explicitly pointing to Gavin Newsom's policies, the regulatory environment, but also the insane litigation the state of California has filed against energy companies. We're gonna get back to that in just a second. But the overall trends are horrible for California. Take a look at this. In 2011, the Public Policy Institute of California found that around 150 headquarters left California, a number that jumped over 200 in 2021. Over that same time period, the number of relocations from other states dropped from nearly 140 to under 70. Between 2018 and 2024, San Francisco and San Jose lost 156 corporate headquarters. Los Angeles, Irvine and Orange county lost 106. In 2024 alone, 17 companies moved headquarters out of California, with 12 moving to Texas. We've also talked before here about Gavin Newsom chasing energy companies out of the state and also having refineries shut down. Under Gavin Newsom, two refineries have closed, which means gas prices could jump up to $8.50 specifically because of Gavin Newsom's policies and a state legislature that has made attacking reliable energy their personality. So it's obviously the terrible energy policies like we talked about, but it's also just absurd local policy like what we saw just in Los Angeles this week. From Bill Mulugian at Fox News. Despite recently cutting 25 million from the LA County DA's office, LA county officials voted yesterday to declare an immigration emergency, giving them the authority to provide taxpayer funded rent relief, legal aid and other services to illegal aliens and their families. So if you are a California taxpayer, you're funding things like an immigration emergency where $25 million will go to help illegal immigrants avoid deportation, even though currently about 65% of the country wants illegal immigrants deported. If you were an 8 year old child playing SimCity trying to destroy a city completely, would you do anything differently than what California elected officials are doing right now? Probably not. One of the dynamics that chased energy companies and refineries out of California, driving up gas prices to $8.50 in the next year, are these insane lawsuits. What we have talked about here in 10 minute drill is this massive scheme where the same left wing dark money groups are giving campaign cash to elected officials to put their names on lawsuits. And then that same dark money group is funding the lawyers who are arguing the cases, but they're also funding education programs for the judges who are hearing these cases. Rich Lowry had a great piece in National Review about one of these particular cases. A preposterous legal assault against fossil Fuels. Aaron Brockett is the woke mayor of Boulder, Colorado. He has made so called social justice a priority in his public career. As the website of the city of Boulder notes proudly, as part of the city's commitment to advancing racial equity, Mayor Brockett has attended the advancing racial equity role of government and BIA microaggression trainings. They're also now suing energy companies for their role in climate change, even though the energy companies that they're naming in this lawsuit aren't even in Boulder. This is a pattern that we've seen now from more than nine states and the District of Columbia and over 30 different cities who are suing energy companies to try and take money from them to fund their own infrastructure. And they're suing them, arguing that these oil and gas companies have contributed to to climate change. Boulder's arguing the energy companies caused floodwaters, fires, hail, rain, snow and wind. It sounds a little bit like the very high drugged leadership of Boulder, Colorado believes that these energy companies are the small children of Captain Planet. This is similar to a case that we've seen from Honolulu where the radical city leadership is arguing that oil and gas companies have caused sea level rise. Now, again, there is no logical connection that they've ever been able to make with the science of arguing that people putting gas in their cars somehow caused the level of the sea to rise in Honolulu, just as they have not made any causal connection between wind in Boulder, Colorado and what we're seeing, you know, people using oil and gas for. But here's Rich Lowry again. At the end of the day, the climate suits are shakedowns. The plaintiffs want the oil companies to cough up billions of dollars to the government and nonprofits to fund the green agenda and become in effect, quasi public entity. This is how the left wants to destroy fossil fuels and get more of us into electric cars. One dynamic that we've talked about here on 10 Minute Drill is in the first few months, the Trump administration, a number of left wing dark money groups ran into lots of trouble getting donors and having any actual success in their advocacy efforts. This from Politico was particularly interesting. Big Green mess. The Sierra Club would very much like to be in the news for its efforts to fight the Trump administration on climate change, save endangered species and close coal plants. But lately, the iconic environmental group's internal conflict is what's making headlines. Oh man, you hate to see it. A left wing dark money group that has spent the last several years trying to destroy reliable energy in the United States and make our lives more difficult and more expensive is running into trouble. Oh, no. Say it isn't so. Politico goes on. The Green Group fired its boss, Ben Jealous, in August in what quickly devolved into a bitter public breakup. Sierra Club's board said it fired Jealous for cause following extensive evaluation of his conduct. Jealous had been the subject of a sexual harassment complaint, although the group hasn't specified its reasons for the ouster. Ooh, this is getting good. Jealous and his allies are fighting back. Civil rights leader Al Sharpton got involved, warning of serious racial implications of firing. Jealous says he raised concerns about racial discrimination in retaliation. During his tenure. He retained attorneys at a civil rights and employment law firm and said he was fighting the decision to fire him. I say let them fight. I personally hope that Kamala Harris never goes away. Now, we don't know what she's gonna do because her book and terrible campaigns and everything that she's done suggest that she has no political future. But she did make news again this week on her book tour.
Kamala Harris
Well, some people have actually said I was the most qualified candidate ever to run for president.
Host
Now, just to be clear here, she served a partial term in the Senate. She had a disastrous term as the attorney general of California where she was involved in, for example, Prop 47, the soft on crime bill that made it legal to shoplift in the state. And a whole host of drug crimes went from being felonies to misdemeanors, which many attribute to California's current crime crisis that has Kamala Harris name all over it. And then of course, her term as vice president, which was not exactly a walk in the park. But. But if it will keep her involved in the political discussion, let her believe she's the most qualified candidate of all time pass for popcorn. That is all the time we have for today. Thank you so much for joining us on 10 minute drill. I think we had a good time. Please like subscribe, leave a review, tell your friends, have a great weekend.

Matt Whitlock keeps the commentary rapid, sarcastic, and unapologetically partisan with frequent jabs at Democrats and progressive leaders. Clips from Newsom, Harris, and Rogan are used to highlight or mock their positions, and the whole episode delivers snappy, assertive arguments geared toward a conservative-leaning audience.
This episode is a fast-paced, critical look at Democratic political struggles—most notably on the government shutdown, California’s direction under Newsom, and Kamala Harris’s attempts to promote herself as a top-tier leader. Whitlock pairs polling data and company migration statistics with pointed commentary, giving listeners a sense of where the right sees Democratic vulnerabilities and how those narratives are being shaped in conservative media.
If you want strong, right-leaning opinions and a whirlwind digest of this week’s battles, this 10 Minute Drill will do the job.
