Two of this year’s biggest hits so far are galaxy-spanning adaptations of popular works. The first is, PROJECT HAIL MARY, based on the popular novel by the author of THE MARTIAN, Andy Weir. The Brothers give their thoughts on the film, discussing Ryan Gosling’s performance, its flashback structure, and where it fits in the genre of “science-forward” space exploration stories. The second is THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE, the hit sequel to the 2023 animated film, based on some of the most popular video games of all time. The Brothers debate its merits as a movie and as an adaptation of the games, noting its pleasures and frustrations.1:04 - Keynote3:46 - Roundtable: “Project Hail Mary”36:11- Roundtable: “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”Clips:- “Memento” (2000)- “Lost” (2004-2010)- “Casablanca” (1942)- “Project Hail Mary” (2026)- “Super Mario 64” (1996)- “Cuphead” (2017)Further Reading:Read more of the 3 Brothers’ reviews, features, and roundtables at 3 Brothers Film.Subscribe to the 3 Brothers Film Newsletter on Substack. Is it possible to be a bad adaptation and a good movie? The Brothers examine this question as they dig into Emerald Fennell’s “WUTHERING HEIGHTS” starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. They focus on how it adapts Emily Brontë’s novel, its wildly vacillating style, its arch tone, its transgressive eroticism, and its lead performances. What are we meant to think of Marty Mauser? Is he a paragon of American individualism or a scammer hellbent on getting his own way? Could he perhaps be both? The Brothers ponder these questions as they review Josh Safdie’s MARTY SUPREME, his new sports drama set in 1952 and starring Timothée Chalamet as the eponymous table tennis star. They discuss the film’s impact, Chalamet’s performance, the visual style, the moral vantage point, and, most importantly, the film’s commentary on America. Chloe Zhao’s HAMNET is one of the most buzzed about films of the year, emotionally charged, featuring acclaimed performances, and offering a portrayal of the biographical origins of Shakespeare’s HAMLET in his marriage and grief at the loss of his son, Hamnet. But is the film a triumph of biographical filmmaking and a testimony to the power of art, or is it an overwrought melodrama with little new to say? The Brothers dig into the film’s performances, disagreeing on the film’s success. They discuss its relationships to other Shakespeare films, its thematic resonances, and references to other filmmakers including Terrence Malick and Lars Von Trier. At the end they discuss the first five years of this podcast, celebrating their favourite reviews and conversations, as well as the films they wish they had been able to review, including OPPENHEIMER, and films they would discuss differently in hindsight.0:46 - Keynote2:05 - Roundtable: “Hamnet”53:00 - Looking Back at 5 Years of the PodcastClips:“Hamnet” (2025)“Antichrist” (2009)“On the Nature of Daylight” - Max Richter“Mank” (2020)“Lethal Weapon” (1987)“The Simpsons” (1993)Read more of the 3 Brothers’ reviews, features, and roundtables at https://3brothersfilm.comSubscribe to the 3 Brothers Film YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO1zge4GZWu3-mdH-VPv8tw

Anders and Aren explore the answer as they discuss del Toro’s latest for Netflix. Which Spike Lee are we getting with HIGHEST 2 LOWEST? The dazzling stylist and provocateur of DO THE RIGHT THING or the gun-for-hire genre filmmaker of OLDBOY? The Brothers dig into this question with a roundtable discussion of Spike Lee’s latest picture. They examine the performances, the music, the structure, and the commentary, before they turn to the picture Spike Lee remade: Akira Kurosawa’s HIGH AND LOW. Is comedy dead? And if it’s not, does it look something like this? On the latest episode, Anders and Aren dig into two of Hollywood’s biggest summer comedies. First, they examine THE NAKED GUN starring Liam Neeson. They compare the film to the classic series starring Leslie Nielsen, discuss its structural and generic approach, and examine the performances of the leads, Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson. Next, they compare HAPPY GILMORE 2 to the original film and ponder the various ways that Adam Sandler continues to dig deeper into a certain type of juvenile man even as he embodies the laziest aspects of the Hollywood machine.0:40 - Keynote1:32 - Table Talk: “The Naked Gun”30:24 - Table Talk: “Happy Gilmore 2”Clips:- “Life’s Too Short” (2011)- “The Naked Gun” (2025)Read more of the 3 Brothers’ reviews, features, and roundtables at https://3brothersfilm.comSubscribe to the 3 Brothers Film YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO1zge4GZWu3-mdH-VPv8tw

James Gunn’s new SUPERMAN evokes the visual brightness and narrative beats of a Silver Age comic book. It’s obviously a response to Zack Snyder’s grim Superman movies, MAN OF STEEL and BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE. But in being such a pointed response to past Superman movies, is it a successful Superman movie itself? The Brothers dig into this question as they grapple with the launch of the DCU in a roundtable discussion. In particular, they focus on the film’s tone, humour, casting, narrative beats, and James Gunn’s authorial signatures. They then broaden the conversation to discuss their favourite Superman movies and the best actors to perform Clark Kent and Lois Lane.0:46 - Keynote3:14 - Roundtable: “Superman”45:10 - Roundtable: Superman on FilmClips:- “Man of Steel” (2013)- “Superman” (1941)- “Superman” (1978)- “Superman” (2025)Related Writing:- Anton’s ranking of the Christopher Reeve Superman movies- Anton’s review of Superman ReturnsRead more of the 3 Brothers’ reviews, features, and roundtables at https://3brothersfilm.comSubscribe to the 3 Brothers Film YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO1zge4GZWu3-mdH-VPv8tw
