Welcome to A year in the Bible with daily Grace. This year, we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
Alexa
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but the center of it.
Beth
Hi everyone. Welcome back to another week of seeing Christ in all of Scripture. My name is Beth and I'm here again with my co host, Alexa.
Alexa
Hey everyone. This week we're going to be taking a look at Deuteronomy 18, 15, 19 and Hebrews 1:1:2. And we're going to learn how Jesus is the true and ultimate prophet who speaks the words of God. So we're starting off this week with the annotation day on Deuteronomy 18, 15, 19 that says, the Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. This is what you requested from the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, let us not continue to hear the voice of the Lord our God or see this great fire any longer so that we will not die. Then the Lord said to me, they have spoken well. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put my words in his mouth and he will tell them everything. I command him. I will hold accountable whoever does not listen to my words that he speaks in my name. So, Beth, tell us about your annotations today.
Beth
Yeah, so I figured I'd start with the last two prompts that have a circle, the words that point to God, and then underline the words that reference Israel in this passage. So the words that I circled were in verses 15 through 17, I circled all of the uses of the phrase the Lord your God. And then in verses 18 through 19, I circled all of the uses of the words I and my. And then I underlined in verses 15 through 17 the uses of you or brothers or us or we. And then in verses 18 through 19, I underlined all of the uses of them in there. So I think it was really helpful to do this to in order to see what is going on here. God is making a promise to raise up a prophet for Israel because the people of Israel asked to not hear directly from God, which leads me to what I noticed about God's attributes in this passage. So God listens to his people. So they made a request and he cared about them enough to honor it. And so, yeah, so I see that God listens to his people. And then in addition to that, I see that he still promises to speak to them through a prophet, even though they requested that he not speak to them directly, which I think is just shows God's compassion.
Alexa
Yeah, I'm reminded in our study of the Israelites journey through the wilderness of just how disobedient they were to God, but yet God remained gracious to them. And so it's just really remarkable that even in their disobedience and their desire to not hear directly from God, God graciously gives them what they request, even though they should want to hear from him. So I'm looking forward to diving more into the Israelites request this week. So what about any connections to Christ? Did you know any in the passage?
Beth
Yeah, I don't wanna say too much about this because we're gonna get into this more as the week goes on, but I did highlight two things that point to Christ in this passage. Thing I highlighted is the phrase among your brothers in both verses 15 and 18. And I highlighted this because Jesus was an Israelite. He was one of the brothers of the people that God was talking to here. And then I also highlighted the phrase my words in his mouth. And the phrase speaks in my name because Jesus is the word of God. And again, we're going to be unpacking these Christ connections in way more detail throughout the week.
Alexa
That's an awesome connection with the phrase among your brothers. I didn't think about that at all. That's just really, really fascinating. And yeah, Jesus being the word of God is a great connection too. When God says you must listen to him in verse 15, that reminded me of what God says in the Gospels when during the transfiguration he proclaims, this is my Son, the Chosen One, listen to him. So that was another connection that I found. But like you said, there is more we can talk about when it comes to seeing Jesus in this passage. So be sure to keep tuning in this week as we unpack that some more. And we look forward to being with you all tomorrow as we go deeper to Deuteronomy 18, 15, 19.
