Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily Grace. This year, we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study, Christ in All of Scripture. Each week, we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.

Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire biblical story, but the center of it. Hi, everyone. Welcome to another episode of Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm here with my co host, Beth.
Beth (0:37)
Hi, friends.
Alexa (0:39)
Yesterday we discussed the annotation day on Deuteronomy 18, 15, 19. And today we want to go deeper into that passage and learn its context and more about what it says about God. So, Beth, can you tell us where this fits in the Biblical story?
Beth (0:54)
Yeah. So this passage, since it's still from the book of Deuteronomy, actually picks up in the exact same place as the Old Testament passages we've been studying for the last two weeks. So this is the second generation of Israelites, and they are just about to enter into the land that God has promised them and brought them to. But before they do, Moses is here restating the law to them.
Alexa (1:13)
So I'm sure that some of our listeners might be like, why are we spending so much time in Deuteronomy? Can we move on in the Biblical story? And we're with you. Like, it would feel a little bit more exciting to look at another passage that deals with another time in the Israelite's life. But at the same time, we're camping out here at this point in the story of Scripture because there is so much here that God is doing and saying that points us to Christ. There are some really important connections that we wouldn't get to consider if we just went right to Joshua. So I just wanted to encourage anyone who might feel tired of being in Deuteronomy. What we learn about Christ from these connections in Deuteronomy is so important and it shapes our understanding of the New Testament. So just wanted to give that little word of encouragement if you're a little weary today of being in. In Deuteronom. So, Beth, is there any more context we need for this passage?
Beth (2:05)
Yeah, so this passage actually references an earlier event in Israel's history, and it's one that we actually haven't talked about yet in our time together. And so I think it's. Yeah, it's really Important that we understand what's happened here in order to move on in this passage as well. So we read about this event in Exodus 20:18 through 21. And so here we see that the Israelites had just escaped their slavery in Egypt, and they were now camped out around Mount Sinai, where God's presence had come to rest. With God's presence came darkness, thunder, lightning, and fire. And they could hear the audible voice of God when he gave Moses the ten Commandments for the first time. And this experience was very terrifying for the Israelites, as you might can imagine in the study, it compares it to witnessing a volcano eruption in the middle of a hurricane. And so the after that experience, the people asked Moses to instead just tell them what God says to him in the future, because they were so scared to keep hearing from God directly, and they felt like their lives were threatened. And so in this passage that we're looking at in Deuteronomy, we read that God heard this request and agreed to it, which I just think is pretty awesome.
