Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily grace. This year, we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study, Christ in All of Scripture. Each week, we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
Beth
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire biblical story, but the center of it.
Alexa
Hey, everyone.
Beth
Welcome to another episode of A Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm here with my co host, Beth.
Alexa
Hi, friends. We are excited to dive deeper into Joshua 21:43,45 with you all today. Yes.
Beth
So, Beth, do you want to start us off by telling us where this passage fits in the biblical story?
Alexa
Of course. So the passage that we're studying this week comes toward the end of the book of Joshua. So after Joshua had brought the second generation of Israelites into the Promised Land, and they had defeated the Canaanites who were living there, and, and they were finally settling down in the land that God had given them. As this passage says, they were finally given rest. And so what this moment is, is it's fulfilling all that God has been doing in Israel since he called Abraham back in Genesis 12. And so we see that the people of Israel have already become a great nation, which actually began in Exodus, where we saw that their numbers had grown and they had become a great people instead of just a small family. Uh, and then they were enslaved in Egypt, and then they were delivered from that slavery and taken to the land that God had reserved for them. But they were outside of that land for a while. So we remember everything we've talked about so far, about how they rebelled against God. And then the first generation had to wander for 40 years. And then finally the second generation, we read all those passages in Deuteronomy, preparing for them for this moment where they would finally enter into the Promised Land. And so after all of that time, such a long time coming, they're finally in the Promised land. Joshua was Moses's successor, and he led them there. And now they are finally settling down and finding rest.
Beth
I bet that felt like such a relief to the Israelites. You know, their journey to get to the Promised Land was so long, and it took a lot for them to be able to even claim the land. But how encouraging must it have been for the Israelites to look around them and see how God did it? He did what he promised, and now they're able to rest in this land that God has given them. Okay, so what about God's character? What does this passage teach us about God?
Alexa
So ultimately here we see that God is a provider and that God is faithful. So it is God who brought them into the land. He provided it for them. He gave it to them. It is God who delivered them from their enemies. So he was faithful to them to make them victorious over their enemies, and he gave them that victory. And then it is God who brought them into rest. He is the One who provided them the land. He is the One who was faithful to bring them there. And, and it was God who fulfilled all of his promises that he had made for generations to these people, and he finally fulfilled them, providing them, yes, the land, but also being faithful to fulfill those promises. So through all of that, we ultimately, as I've said time and time again, have seen God's faithfulness. He did what he said he was going to do. He grew Abraham's family into a great nation, and he brought them into the land that he had promised them.
Beth
So good. Well, that is all that we have for you today, but we hope you join us tomorrow as we turn to the New Testament.
Alexa
See you then.

A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace Episode: Season 4, Week 21 Day 2: Going Deeper in Joshua 21:43-45 Release Date: May 20, 2025
In this episode of "A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace," hosts Alexa and Beth delve into Joshua 21:43-45. This passage marks a pivotal moment in the Old Testament, celebrating the fulfillment of God's promises to the Israelites as they settle into the Promised Land. The hosts guide listeners through the historical and theological significance of this scripture, highlighting how it points to Jesus and underscores God's unwavering faithfulness.
Alexa sets the stage by situating the passage within the broader narrative of the Israelites' journey:
"[00:48] Alexa: ...the second generation of Israelites into the Promised Land, and they had defeated the Canaanites who were living there, and they were finally settling down in the land that God had given them."
She outlines the progression from the covenant with Abraham in Genesis, through the Exodus, the period of wandering, and finally to the settlement under Joshua's leadership. This historical backdrop emphasizes the long-awaited fulfillment of God's promise.
Beth reflects on the significance of this moment for the Israelites:
"I bet that felt like such a relief to the Israelites. You know, their journey to get to the Promised Land was so long, and it took a lot for them to even claim the land." [02:07]
She highlights the emotional and spiritual relief the Israelites must have felt as they finally rested in the land God provided—a stark contrast to their decades of wandering and struggle.
A significant portion of the discussion focuses on the attributes of God as depicted in Joshua 21:43-45. Alexa elaborates on God's provision and faithfulness:
"Ultimately here we see that God is a provider and that God is faithful. So it is God who brought them into the land. He provided it for them... He is the One who was faithful to bring them there." [02:32]
She underscores that God's actions in fulfilling His promises to Abraham and his descendants demonstrate His consistent faithfulness and provision. This fulfillment is not just a historical event but a testament to God's enduring commitment to His people.
While the primary focus is on the Old Testament passage, the hosts seamlessly connect these themes to the New Testament, reinforcing the overarching narrative of redemption centered on Jesus. By examining how the Israelites' fulfillment of God's promise prefigures the ultimate fulfillment in Christ, Alexa and Beth invite listeners to see Jesus woven throughout the entirety of Scripture.
Alexa on God's faithfulness:
"[02:32] ...we ultimately, as I've said time and time again, have seen God's faithfulness. He did what he said he was going to do."
Beth on the Israelites' relief:
"[02:07] I bet that felt like such a relief to the Israelites... But how encouraging must it have been for the Israelites to look around them and see how God did it?"
In wrapping up the episode, Alexa and Beth encourage listeners to continue their journey through the Bible, promising further exploration of the New Testament in upcoming episodes. They reiterate the central theme of God's unwavering faithfulness and the presence of Christ throughout Scripture, inviting listeners to deepen their understanding and love for Him.
