Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily grace. This year, we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study, Christ in All of Scripture. Each week, we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
B
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but the center of it.
A
Friends, welcome back to the Year in the Bible podcast. My name is Beth and I am here again today with my co host, Alexa.
B
Hey, everyone. I'm super excited to talk about the annotation day we did today. I just felt like there was so much to reflect on. So how was your experience marking up this passage from Colossians 1?
A
Beth, I thought this was so cool. After spending the last two days looking at the creation story and seeing God's role in creation specifically, just reading this verse began to blow my mind. The way Paul connects Jesus to God and the creation story is truly amazing. And it was cool how, just like reading through it even the first time, I was able to make those connections already.
B
Yeah, absolutely. To think that all things were created by and through and for Jesus is just mind blowing, like you said. So let's get into these prompts a little bit. When following the third prompt, what specific words or phrases did you notice that appear in Genesis 1?
A
Well, there were so many. The image of God, creator of everything, the phrase heaven and earth, and then even whenever it talks about rulers and authorities. So much of this passage is intended to point us back to Genesis 1, which really helps us see just how intentional God was when he inspired the writing of Scripture. We can see how Even whenever Genesis 1 was being written, Jesus was present. And this was so long before his actual birth. And I just think that's really cool.
B
Yeah, that's really, really incredible. And he wasn't just present, but active. So when we look at the creation around us, we can be reminded that Jesus had a hand in creating what we see. And that's just so cool. Okay, so continuing on about the prompts from this day, do you think it would be a good idea for us to read through the other two verses found in the last annotation prompt?
A
I think that's a great idea. I'll go ahead and read Hebrews 1:1:3 and you can read the verses from John. Hebrews 1:1:3 says, long ago God spoke to our ancestors by the prophets at different times and in different ways. In these last days he has spoken to us by His Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe through Him. The sun is the radiance of God's glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful Word. After making purifications for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high.
B
And then John 1:1:3 says, in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through him, and apart from him, not one thing was created that has been created. So what are the similarities between these passages and the one we annotated in Colossians?
A
Yeah, all these verses have the same emphases. Jesus is the very image or the very nature of God Himself. John 1:1 says it the most explicitly. It says that the Word, which is Jesus, was God. And then all of them also speak about creation being made through and sustained by Jesus. And finally, they all point to the authority and glory of Jesus.
B
Yeah, I love that. And as much as I would love to dive into Christ's authority and glory right now, that's something we're going to unpack more tomor, so be sure to join us tomorrow as we talk more about how Genesis 1 and Colossians 1 connect to Christ.
A
Yeah, we will see y'all tomorrow. We can't wait.

A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace: Season 4, Week 3 Day 3 – Annotating Colossians 1:15-17
Introduction
In the Season 4 episode of A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace, titled “Annotating Colossians 1:15-17”, hosts Beth and Alexa delve into the profound connections between the New Testament and the Old Testament, particularly focusing on how Jesus is interwoven throughout the Biblical narrative. Released on January 15, 2025, this episode continues the “Christ in All of Scripture” study, guiding listeners to uncover the central role of Jesus in both creation and salvation.
Engaging with Colossians 1:15-17
The episode centers around an annotation session of Colossians 1:15-17, a passage that eloquently describes Jesus' supremacy and role in creation. Beth initiates the discussion by expressing awe at Paul's ability to connect Jesus with the creation narrative:
Beth [00:50]: "The way Paul connects Jesus to God and the creation story is truly amazing."
Alexa echoes this sentiment, highlighting the staggering realization of Jesus being the creator:
Alexa [01:10]: "To think that all things were created by and through and for Jesus is just mind blowing, like you said."
Connecting to Genesis 1
A significant portion of the conversation explores how Colossians 1:15-17 ties back to Genesis 1. Beth notes the deliberate parallels, emphasizing the intentionality behind Scripture's inspiration:
Beth [01:29]: "So much of this passage is intended to point us back to Genesis 1, which really helps us see just how intentional God was when he inspired the writing of Scripture."
She further marvels at the presence and activity of Jesus in the creation narrative, predating His earthly incarnation:
Beth [01:29]: "We can see how Even whenever Genesis 1 was being written, Jesus was present. And this was so long before his actual birth."
Alexa reinforces this by noting Jesus' active role in creation:
Alexa [01:57]: "He wasn't just present, but active. So when we look at the creation around us, we can be reminded that Jesus had a hand in creating what we see."
Exploring Additional Scripture Connections
The hosts expand their analysis by incorporating Hebrews 1:1-3 and John 1:1-3, drawing parallels that reinforce Jesus' divine nature and creative authority.
Beth reads Hebrews 1:1-3, highlighting how God’s communication has culminated in His Son:
Beth [02:23]: "Hebrews 1:1-3 says, 'Long ago God spoke to our ancestors by the prophets at different times and in different ways. In these last days he has spoken to us by His Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe through Him... After making purifications for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high.'"
Alexa follows with John 1:1-3, emphasizing the pre-existence and creative power of the Word:
Alexa [02:56]: "John 1:1-3 says, 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through him, and apart from him, not one thing was created that has been created.'"
Comparative Analysis and Insights
In analyzing these passages, Beth identifies key themes that consistently portray Jesus as the image of God and the agent of creation:
Beth [03:17]: "Jesus is the very image or the very nature of God Himself. John 1:1 says it the most explicitly. It says that the Word, which is Jesus, was God. And then all of them also speak about creation being made through and sustained by Jesus. And finally, they all point to the authority and glory of Jesus."
Alexa adds that while today’s discussion lays the foundation, the exploration of Jesus' authority and glory will continue in upcoming episodes:
Alexa [03:39]: "That's something we're going to unpack more tomorrow, so be sure to join us tomorrow as we talk more about how Genesis 1 and Colossians 1 connect to Christ."
