Welcome to A Year in the Bible With Daily Grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the New, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
B
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but the center of it. Hey everyone. Welcome back to another episode of A Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm here with my co host Beth.
A
Hey friends. So we have been in Hosea this week and now we want to turn to the New Testament and take a look at Ephesians 5:25:32. So we're going to start our study of that passage by talking about our annotation takeaways. So before we do that, let me first read the passage for us. Husbands, love your wives. Just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her to make her holy, cleansing her with the washing of water by the Word. He did this to present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and blameless. In the same way, husbands are to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife, loves himself, for no one ever hates his own flesh, but provides and cares for it, just as Christ does for the church. Since we are members of his body. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. And this mystery is profound. But I am talking about Christ and the Church. To sum up, each one of you is to love his wife as himself, and the wife is to respect her husband. So Alexa, what stood out to you from your annotations today?
B
I took notice of the phrase just as Christ that appears two times in this passage. The first time is in verse 25 and here we see that husbands are to love their wives just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her. And then the second time appears in verse 29 when we read that a husband is to provide and care for his own flesh, just as Christ does for the church. I don't want to go into too much detail here, but the general observation we Receive from Ephesians 5:25 32 is that there is a direct connection between how husbands are to love their wives and how Christ loves the Church.
A
So could you say just a little bit more about that connection, even if we're not going to go that much deeper.
B
Yeah, we not only see love for the church displayed by Christ dying for the church, but we also see that Jesus has cleansed her and brought her to Himself, holy and blameless. That's a really beautiful picture of purification. And then verses 30 through 31 speak to the unity that we have in Christ. Just as a man and a wife are united to one another and become one flesh in marriage, so our believers united to Christ and are one flesh in Him. We're going to talk more about that tomorrow, which I'm super excited about, so we'll just stop right there when it comes to those connections.
A
That's super helpful. I'm really looking forward to going deeper into this tomorrow, so join us as we discuss how this passage connects to the story of Hosea and then how both of these passages point us to Jesus. We will see you tomorrow.

Episode: S4: Week 43 Day 3: Annotating Ephesians 5:25-32
Date: October 22, 2025
Hosts: Alexa and Beth (The Daily Grace Co.)
This episode focuses on a deep, reflective study of Ephesians 5:25-32, examining the connection between marriage and Christ’s relationship with the Church. The hosts aim to highlight how Old and New Testament passages point to Jesus, encouraging listeners to find Christ on every page of Scripture. The discussion centers on the theological and practical implications of Christ’s love for the church and how it models love within marriage.
[01:42] Beth notes the significance of the recurring phrase “just as Christ,” which anchors the whole passage—first in verse 25 about sacrificial love, and again in verse 29 concerning provision and care.
There is a direct analogy: the way husbands are called to love their wives is intimately tied to Christ’s example of loving the church.
“The general observation we receive from Ephesians 5:25-32 is that there is a direct connection between how husbands are to love their wives and how Christ loves the Church.”
— Beth [01:42]
[02:15] Alexa asks Beth to elaborate on this connection.
[02:20] Beth highlights:
Christ’s love is seen not only in his death for the church but also as an ongoing process of purification, presenting the church “holy and blameless.”
Verses 30-31 shift focus to unity—believers are united to Christ just as spouses are united in marriage:
“Just as a man and a wife are united to one another and become one flesh in marriage, so are believers united to Christ and are one flesh in Him.”
— Beth [02:20]
The concept of “mystery” is underscored: Paul refers to the deep, profound connection between Christ and the church as something that is revealed through marriage as a symbol.
The hosts tease a coming discussion (in the next episode) about how this passage connects with their current Old Testament study in Hosea and how both texts prefigure Jesus:
“We’re going to talk more about that tomorrow, which I’m super excited about…”
— Beth [02:20]
On the central analogy:
“There is a direct connection between how husbands are to love their wives and how Christ loves the Church.”
— Beth [01:42]
On purification and presentation:
“We also see that Jesus has cleansed her and brought her to Himself, holy and blameless. That’s a really beautiful picture of purification.”
— Beth [02:20]
On unity in Christ:
“Just as a man and a wife are united to one another and become one flesh in marriage, so are believers united to Christ and are one flesh in Him.”
— Beth [02:20]
The tone is warm, gentle, and conversational, offering encouragement and deep reflection rather than academic analysis. The hosts maintain a devotional atmosphere, inviting listeners into thoughtful engagement with Scripture.
This short but rich episode unpacks Ephesians 5:25-32, showing how the relationship between Christ and the church sets the standard for marital love and demonstrates the unity and holiness granted to believers through Jesus. The hosts identify key scriptural themes—sacrificial love, purification, and unity—inviting further exploration in relation to the Old Testament. The episode ends with anticipation for a deeper dive into how Hosea and Ephesians together point to the gospel of Christ.
