Hey everyone.
Alexa
Hello everyone. Welcome back to Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm joined with my co host Beth.
Beth
Hi friends. We are so excited to be back for another week of Bible study with you all. Today we're going to be talking about our Old Testament passage for this week, which is Genesis 22, verse 2, and then verses 6 through 14. So I'm going to go ahead and read that passage for you right now. Take your son, he said, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, go to the land of Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering. On one of the mountains I will tell you about. Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac. In his hand he took the fire and the knife and the two of them walked on together. Then Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said, my father. And he replied, here I am, my son. Isaac said, the fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering? Abraham answered, God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son. Then the two of them walked on together. When they arrived at the place that God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar on top of the wood. And Abraham reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, abraham, Abraham. He replied, here I am. Then he said, do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me. Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the thicket by its thorns. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in the place of his son. And Abraham named that place, the Lord will provide. So today it is said, it will be provided on the Lord's mountain. All right. So Alexa, how did marking up this passage go for you today?
Alexa
Yeah, this is one of my favorite passages of scripture because the Christ connection in it is just really strong. So I personally just enjoyed finding words and phrases that point to Christ in this passage. I highlighted the words only son in verse 2 and 12 because Isaac was Abraham's only son and Jesus is God's only son. So I love the connection there. I highlighted the word lamb in verses seven through eight because of how Jesus is our sacrificial lamb, and also highlighted the phrases burnt offering in place of his son in verse 13 because it reminded me of how Jesus offered himself up as a sacrifice in our place on the cross. And then lastly, I highlighted the phrase it will be provided on the Lord's mountain. In Genesis 22, God tells Abraham to go to the land of Moriah and offer Isaac as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that he will tell Abraham. And in Chronicles 3:1, we learn that the Temple was built on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem. So it's possible that Isaac was to be sacrificed at or near what would later be Jerusalem. And we know that Jesus was sacrificed in Jerusalem, so there's a really neat connection there.
Beth
Wow, that's so many Christ connections. I love that.
Alexa
Yeah. I also was really encouraged by Abraham's faith. In this passage, one of the prompts asks us to underline Abraham's actions and words. I underlined Abraham's words, God will provide the lamb in verse eight. So it's. It's unclear if Abraham believed that God will provide a lamb in Isaac's place or if Abraham was speaking ironically here. But if we look at Genesis 22:5, Abraham says to his servant, see, stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship. Then we'll come back to you. So it does seem as if there is some belief that Isaac will be spared. And Abraham demonstrates that faith by continuing on with what God told him to do. He takes the wood for the offering and gives it to Isaac to carry. You know, actually as I'm saying that, I realize that's another Christ connection as Jesus carried his cross up to where he was going to be crucified. I almost missed that one. But Abraham builds the altar and he puts his son on it. And he's about to go through with the sacrifice when the angel stops him. So even though Abraham likely had faith that God would spare Isaac, he was willing to do all that God commanded him, even at the cost of his own son.
Beth
Oh, that is just so good. Abraham's faith does amaze me here. It reminds me of how important it is to know God's character at this point in the story, like, Abraham knew that God was his provider already, and God had showed him that time and time again. And so I love to think about, about how that attribute of God that is so obvious in this passage was really just sustaining Abraham throughout this. And so in this story specifically, we aren't just told that God is our provider. We get to walk with Abraham through the journey of knowing something to be true about God and then also experiencing it firsthand, which, I don't know. It's just really cool.
Alexa
Yeah. Yeah. That's so good. I love that. Well, that's all that we have for you today. Join us tomorrow as we dive deeper into this passage from Genesis 22. Bye, friends.
Beth
Bye.

"Only Son" (Genesis 22:2 & 22:12):
"Lamb" (Genesis 22:7–8):
"Burnt Offering in Place of His Son" (Genesis 22:13):
"It Will Be Provided on the Lord's Mountain" (Genesis 22:14):

Transitioning from textual connections, Beth and Alexa delve into the character study of Abraham, focusing on his unwavering faith.
Alexa points out Abraham's profound trust in God's provision:
Alexa [03:26]: "I underlined Abraham's words, God will provide the lamb in verse eight.
