Hey, welcome to A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace Season 5. This is so exciting. We're starting off a brand new year of going through scripture together. I've got Scott here, he's going to be with us for the book of Genesis, which is really exciting. If you're just getting started with us and you want more information about how to follow along with us as we walk through the entire Bible. This year, there's an episode that dropped on December 2025. You can go back and listen to that episode and get all the details that you need. But for today, we're gonna jump right in because we've already started reading. It's January 1st. Our passage for today was Genesis 1 through 3. But before we get into that, Scott, we wanna get to know you just a little bit. So can you tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do at the Daily Grace Cup?
A
Yeah. My name is Scott. I'm married to my wonderful wife Crystal. Who you have recorded a few podcasts.
B
Yeah, just a few.
A
And I've got two amazing boys, Calvin and Judah. Been at the Daily Grace Company for about three years. I started as a staff writer, which I loved, and now I serve as a theological editor. So just making sure everything we write and produce is accurately represented.
B
And you do a fantastic job of that. It's a joy to work with you and I've learned so much with working with you. And so I know our listeners are going to love getting to go through Genesis. Okay, so before we jump into Genesis 1:3, can we talk about Genesis as a whole? Are there any things that we should keep in mind? Mind as we're reading and studying this book over the next few weeks?
A
Yeah, totally. I think one big thing is just Genesis 1:11 is really kind of the setup to the whole. Not just Genesis, but the whole Bible. It really just kind of shows where everything went wrong, how sin spreads. But then starting in 12, really 12 through 50, just the focus really narrows down to Abraham and his family. I'll mention this when we get there, but I mean, the promises God makes to Abraham are just so, so important, understanding Genesis and the entire Bible. But I think something just to be paying attention to in Genesis is this idea of offspring. And so we see that early on in Genesis 3 with this hope of an offspring from Eve who will crush the head of the serpents. But then, you know, start with Genesis 12, we start to get a little bit of clarity of who this offspring might be. Someone from Abraham's family. And I think what's interesting with Genesis is just to pay attention to how often it seems like God's promises to Abraham are in jeopardy, or it seems like they're not gonna come through, and yet they always do. God is just so faithful to keep his promises, even when it seems like they're being threatened. So I think that's an important thread to be looking out for. Just the offspring and how often that promise seems to be in jeopardy.
B
Yeah, that's super helpful as we get started on this book. All right, so let's begin in Genesis 1 through 3. A lot, and I mean, a lot happens in these chapters. So just start us off, Scott, with chapter one.
A
I feel like I'm going to be saying that a lot. There's a lot in these chapters, and that's always true. But, yeah, I mean, there. There is a ton. Our time is limited, so I'll contain myself. But the first thing that just really, really jumps out to me about these chapters is particularly the second verse of the Bible where we read that the earth was formless and empty. Darkness covered the surface of the watery depths. And the idea that's being communicated there, Shelby, is just this idea of chaos. The earth is in a state of chaos. So it's formless. There's no structure, it's void, there's no life, because there's no structure. And yet God starts to get to work. The Spirit is there, and so God begins to just create structure and order to this place for life to function. And he just creates barriers, boundaries between these realms to support life and man. For me, there's just such a beautiful reminder there that within God's boundaries, life can flourish. Like. Like God is a God of order, and he structures things. He structures the world to function in a certain way. And within these boundaries, life exists. And for me, that's really challenging to think about and to remember when it comes to obeying Scripture's commands, because the same thing is true there. Like, God's commands are part of just how the world is to work, how he wants us to live. And. And if we live within those commands as he designed us to function, then we will flourish. We'll find life when we go outside of those commands, when we kind of step beyond, beyond the way he has set up the world to function. I mean, what do we find? We find chaos and death. And so that's just helpful for me to remember that God wants us to flourish physically. We see this in Genesis 1, but also just in the moral, spiritual area as well. Like when we obey God, we'll flourish.
B
Yeah, I love that you're bringing that. There's a lot of things you can draw out of the creation story, and that's one I haven't thought of in a long time. So I love that we're bringing that out. You know, you talk about flourishing under God's law and when we're obedient to him, but we see a pretty big act of disobedience in chapter three. Can you talk about that? Yeah.
A
Okay, so this is. This is one of the most frustrating chapters of the Bible for me to read, because this is. This is the ultimate example of, like, you had one job to do, Adam. Like, just sit on your hands. Like, don't grab the fruit. That. And, you know, they. They buy into the serpent's lie that, like, God is essentially holding out on them. And you read in Genesis 2, this. This garden of Eden, this paradise, I'm like, are you kidding me? Like, what. What has God withheld from you, really? And so I get real judgy of Adam and Eve in this moment, and I'm like, man, if that had been me, I would have made a different choice. And then I asked myself this question. Well, okay. Have I ever knowingly disobeyed one of God's commands? Well, yeah, I think all of us would say we have. But I'm like, okay, when I do that, am I not just doing the same thing? Like, I like to think that, oh, I would have made a different choice if I were in the situation. The fact is, Shelby, like, I'm in that situation every single day. And a lot of times I do make the exact same choice they made. Because, I mean, if I know God is telling me to do something, and I. And I knowingly disobey him, I mean, what am I doing if not saying, God, I know you say this, but fill in the blank. I want to do things this other way. I don't know if I can trust you, God, or I don't honestly believe that you're good God. And so, you know, in those moments when I'm tempted to judge Adam and Eve, I instead am just forced to kind of take a step back and just ask myself, do I believe God is good? Because I think at the root of so much of our disobedience is that we're believing the same lie they did, that God, I don't know if you're good. And I think especially Genesis 2, just reading about the beautiful environment he put Adam and Eve in, it's just a reminder that God is a good God, and I can trust him. I can obey him even when it's hard to do.
B
So. Yeah, I think that's such a good reminder. I think my takeaway from these few chapters is a lot of what you're saying here, that when I have a moment when I'm reading scripture or experiencing the conviction of the Spirit, just really sitting in that for a moment and evaluating, like, what is my response to this? And do I believe that there is flourishing under God's law and in his ways, and then making a choice that's in accordance with that? So thanks for walking us through these chapters, Scott. We'll be back again tomorrow to Talk through Genesis 4 through 6. En Cox Estamos un paso adelante muchacho que yas a vela tu ca vecito incluso antes de Pedro.
