Hey, welcome back to A Year in the Bible With Daily Grace. This is Shelby and Paul, and we are jumping into Exodus 4 through 6 today. Paul, we've got a lot to talk about in chapter four. There is a story that always catches me off guard when I'm reading through the book of Exodus. God seems to get upset with Moses, and even it appears he's going to take his life. Can you just walk us through this surprising scene?
Paul
Yeah. So this is something that I think we didn't really have space in the study to talk about, so I'm happy to explain that. So, you know, it's interesting. And unfortunately, you know, we can't really know exactly what's going on here, but that's okay. It's really, because it seems like the text is assuming some kind of background knowledge that the reader would have that we don't have. Now, obviously, the Bible was written a long time ago, and so there's a lot of things that can get lost in, you know, time, and yet there are certain things that we can know. So circumcision seems to be a central part of this story. You know, it's that God seems to want to kill Moses, but then his wife circumcises his son, and then he relents. Right. And I want to point us to a very specific verse here to 22 and 23. Right? It refers to Israel as God's firstborn son. Right. And so Pharaoh is withholding Israel from God. Right, by holding them in Egypt. And so it seems almost like Moses, by not circumcising his son, is doing something similar. Right. So circumcision was the sign of the covenant that God gave to Abraham that we talked about in Genesis. And so it seems like, you know, Moses not circumcising his son is, like I said, kind of withholding his son. And so now by circumcising him, he's bringing him into the covenant promise that he was supposed to have done when presumably he was born. Right. And so, you know, I think when I think about our own context, it's like, okay, what does that have to do with us? Right? Like, you know, we don't circumcise to be a part of. Be a Christian. Right. But, you know, I think it does show us that it's super important to raise your children in faith. Right. You know, it shows us that God takes his covenants very seriously and takes the promises that he makes and the things that he holds us to very seriously. And so, you know, for parents that Might be listening. It's really good to just remember that, like, from the beginning, God wanted him, wanted Moses, wanted us to raise our children in the faith.
Shelby
Yeah. As a parent, that's a really challenging and sobering reminder because even the best intentions, the whirlwind of life, can make it difficult to actually follow through on that. And so whether you're a parent yourself or you just have little ones in your life, what a great reminder to be intentional about raising them to know and love the Lord. I know we also have a significant moment in chapter six from today's chapters. And there we're just going to dive a little bit deeper. We talked yesterday about the name Yahweh and that significance, and that kind of gets reiterated today. So can you tell us more about that?
Paul
Yeah. And so yesterday we talked about that. Right. Like you said. And here we get specifically God referencing the fact that in 6, 2, 3, the fact that he previously revealed himself as God Almighty Right. Under this name, but now he's revealing himself as Yahweh. Right. And like we talked about yesterday, this is an indication that God is going to show something new about his character. And he states it really specifically that, you know, he's going to take his people out of Egypt. Right. And so God revealing himself under this new name is kind of a chance for Moses to realize that this is a pretty big moment. Right. And as we're going to see in the next few days, Moses doesn't really pick up on that. But it's definitely a moment to maybe mark in your mind as a significant shift in the history of Israel that, you know, God is doing something new directly to deliver them.
Shelby
So it feels like to me, so far in the book of Exodus, that we have this, like, tension that's building. And we see God come to Moses. We see God here saying that he's going to take his people out of Egypt. And so we have some really exciting chapters, and we're going to watch God just, like, deliver his people over these next few episodes. But in this episode, a big takeaway for me is the point you made, Paul, about being intentional to teach, teach our kids and raise them to know and love the Lord. Because even though God is working toward delivering this whole nation of people from Egypt, he also cared very specifically about Moses's son. And he took the time to show the importance of that. And that is a great reminder to me as a parent. So thanks for walking us through these chapters today. We'll be back tomorrow to Talk through chapter 7 through 10.
