Hey, everybody. Welcome to ABA Inside Track, the podcast that's like reading in your car, but safer. I'm your host, Robert Perry Crews, and with me, as always, are my fabulous co hosts.
A
Oh, hey there, Rob. It's me, Jackie McDonald.
C
And it's me, Diana Perry Cruz.
B
Hi.
C
Hi. Hi.
B
Well, we are here doing our behavior analytic podcast in which every week we pick a topic and discuss relevant research articles. Except if it's the first of the month on our free feed or the last of the month if you are one of our patrons, where you get a little amuse bouche in the form of a preview, talking about everything that's going on for us and what's coming out in the next month so that you can read ahead if you so choose. And this is our preview for January 2026. What.
A
So sounds so great. I can't wait for 2026.
B
2026. I think maybe that's why I tried to give myself an adjective. Was I going to be your humble host or your horrible host or your hairy host? I don't know. I. I stopped for a second and then I realized that's not a thing I do. So I just said, my name is. You'd think after nearly years of it, smart, you could just. I'd be like, I'd get it down. And then I think I've gotten in the habit of. I've overthinking our intros. And then I just don't know how to. Don't know how to start the show. It's really, really bad. My stimulus control for starting show is surprisingly weak. Depressing. Oh, well. But what's not depressing is our slate of episodes for this new year. Happy New Year, everybody.
C
Yeah. Happy New Year.
B
Happy New Year. Yeah. Full disclosure to get this out in time because Christmas falls on like, the day that everything we tend to do in our organization, all the holidays, are those dates. We're recording this a little bit before the new year, so we hopefully all are in 2026. When you're listening to this, nothing weird happened. They didn't change the calendars or anything like that. But we'll assume that that's going to be. That's going to be okay for the next. Next couple weeks till this comes out for y'. All.
C
Y2K5.
B
Yeah. Y2K5 2.
C
Y2K25.
B
Why don't we start us off by what everyone can expect for in the podcast feed over the next month?
C
Okay, that's me. Very exciting stuff for the month of January. We're bringing you a lot. If you are a patron, you will get access to our most recent and newest book club, which was on Atomic Habits, a book we all enjoyed. And I, I guess actually everybody gets a sampling. Does that come out in January?
B
Everyone will get the preview the exact same time, but only patrons of the $10 nu level will get the full episode.
C
Yeah.
B
And two CES for no charge.
C
If you want CES, you have to listen to the whole thing.
B
Yeah.
C
So. Yeah, yeah. So everyone will get some of that. Some people will get all of that. And in addition, we have three fulllength episodes coming out this month. We also have two. Two of those episodes have guests, which is exciting. We don't always have so many guests, but we do for January. So the very first episode is going to be one that features a guest. It's on motivational interviewing. And we have Dr. Monica Gilbert joining us. Rob discovered her from a book that she wrote about motivational interviewing. We're very excited to have her on the show. So in addition to referencing her book, we will also talk about a couple articles which are titled A Behavior Analytic Account of Motivational Interviewing by Christopher and Doer that was in The Behavior Analyst 2009. As well as Creating a Therapeutic alliance with Caregivers, An Introduction to Motivational Interviewing by Platner and Anderson that was in Behavior analysis and practice 2024. And then her book is titled how to Stop Talking and Start Communicating with Motivational Interviewing. Building Effective Partnerships with Caregivers. A Practical Guide for Behavior Therapists. Rolls off the tongue. Yes. And that was hot off The Press's Gilbert 2025. Now, next up in our series, we have an episode where we are very fortunate to have three guests joining us. It is going to be a big roundtable for this episode. And so for this one, we are going to talk about risk assessment. And we will be joined by Dr. Stephanie Peterson, Dr. Becky Eldridge, and Dr. Neil Dioshant. So that is pretty exciting for us. I don't know. Have. Maybe only one other time have we had three guests and it was our neurodiversity panel.
B
That's what I was thinking because. Because I was. I was wondering had we ever done.
A
We did one more too on our. When we talked about gay con. Gay conversion therapy.
C
That's true. Because also here. Yeah, that's true.
A
Yeah. So those are the.
C
So six people around the mic.
B
We've done that because Alan was, you know. Alan just showed up.
C
No, we were.
B
Wasn't even a book club there. He was.
C
That's a good episode, I think.
B
No, it's a great episode. It was a great episode. I'm glad Helen was there. I'm just joking around.
C
Okay, so for this episode on risk assessment, we have several articles to review. They include Functional Analysis A Need for Clinical Decision Support Tools to weigh Risks and Benefits by Wiskirchen, Dushand and Peterson. That was in Behavior Analysis research and practice 2017. Also toward the Development of a Functional Analysis Risk Assessment Decision Tool by Dioshand, Eldredge and Peterson. That was in Behavior analysis and practice 2020, everyone's favorite year. And finally, a pilot evaluation of expert and novice use of the Functional Analysis Risk Assessment Decision Tool by Schroeder, Peterson, Binti, Mahabub and Dresh. And that was in Behavior analysis and practice 2024. All right, we will round out January with an episode with just us. No guess for this one. I got a little bit of a bee in my bonnet and wanted to talk about the changing criterion design and.
B
The rest of us didn't. So it's a Diana solo episode. No, no.
C
Everyone joined me. There were multiple bees flying around and we are going to tell you all about the ins and outs of the CCD and how it should be used. And I'm excited to bring that one to you. So we talked about three different articles for this episode. Best Practices in Utilizing the Changing Criterion Design by Klein, Houlihan, Vincent and Panahan. That was in Behavior analysis and practice 2017. Also using mnemonics, Remote Coaching, and the Range Bound Changing Criterion Design to Teach College Students with IDD to Make Employment Decisions by Brady, Kearney, downey, Torres and McDougall. And that was in Education and Training in Autism and Developmental Disabilities 2022. And finally, effects of a Variable Ratio Reinforcement Schedule with Changing Criteria on Exercise in Obese and Non obese Boys by DeLuca and Holborn. And that was in Java 1992. All right, exciting stuff.
A
It's also important to note too that the risk assessment was a listener choice. So that was something that our on our Patreon chose and we were so excited that guests wanted to come on and talk about that with us.
B
So that does mean if you are a subscriber on the patreon page at $5 or up, you can listen to that. Everyone can listen to that episode that's going to be and everyone can have it right away. However, if you are a patron at $5 an up level, you're able to get freezy e for listening to that one. So if you've been Thinking about, you know, my New Year's resolution is to support people on Patreon more. Well, hey, what a great time to do so. Or you just continue listening however you're listening. We just want to get the. Get the information out there, and we just have that as kind of a little extra, extra thing, so. Well, all right, so that's what we've got coming out this January. Let's move into the errata section of the preview where we just talk about kind of whatever relevant things to the podcast, other things. Let's kick it off by saying, who's got a New Year's resolution? We just read Atomic Habits. We've recorded that episode already. You know, many of you will be hearing it. And in that, we did talk about our habits. Spoiler alert. We are all just, you know, constantly working out now. So we need new habits for the year. And while James Clear does not say that you should wait till New Year to start any habit, you can do that whenever you like. He does say, sometimes it is nice to start it at a kind of a round numbered or, you know, just good period of time. And, you know, you might be having some time off from work, maybe you have a vacation or you're doing some cleaning after the holidays, you got some presents or whatever. So maybe it's a good time to start a new habit. So does anyone here have a. A habit that they're interested in either continuing or starting a new this year? Jackie, you always have, like 50 habits.
A
I do. I'm not going to tell all of them because most of them are fairly personal.
C
Oh.
B
Oh, okay.
A
I mean, like. Right. They're like inner things that I'm working on, so I don't really want to share with the world what those are, but I can say that I am one up. Sorry, my dog is losing it. One thing that I do want to commit to is writing for 30 minutes three times a week so we can get some of our manuscripts out because we have a lot, and that's something I hate doing. And I need to find more reinforcers for it because it's. It's important for my students and it's important for my job.
B
Yeah, that's a good. That's a good one. Writing. Writing more. Diana, how about you?
C
That's actually the same one that I was going to say.
B
D. We all know you stole Jackie's idea. You need to come up with your own habit.
C
Yeah. You know, the semester just gets, like, so busy and so busy. Did I say that twice? It's appropriate to have said that twice because it's just so busy and it's really hard to, like, carve out the time. So I think I need to find a time of day that's just dedicated to writing. And even if it's just like 30 minutes, I think that would still help me make progress on all of those same manuscripts that really do need to get out the door. So that is part of mine as well. And now I don't remember what I said last year for my.
B
Nor do I if I. I should have listened.
C
What are these called? Resolutions.
B
I don't remember to the podcast, but.
C
Today, because it's possible that last year I said, oh, I would like to drink more water. And I got. I got myself an app for that, and it works like a charm. Every day that you drank the requisite amount of water, you got a little sticker animal. This app is called Water Llama, if anyone's interested in. But there's only a hundred animals. So I did this every day without fail for exactly 100 days. And then when I collected all of the stickers, I stopped using the app and I stopped drinking water. And I feel like I'm feeling it. Right. Like, you go about eight months of being dehydrated and you're like, hmm, I think I did feel better before. I thought I would just be able to keep up with it without using the app, but that does not appear to be the case. So I'm going to need to find a substitute or maybe there's some way to, like, reset the stickers so I can start earning them again. But it was clearly a very strong motivator for me, so I need to find a way to get that back into my life. So I'm just going to. If I said it last year, it's an ongoing process.
B
Okay, cool.
C
How about you?
B
I don't have any that I really want to work on. I don't know.
C
I'm so glad you brought this topic up.
B
You know, I thought I did, and then I thought more about it and I was like, well, I have Diana, actually.
C
Perfect.
B
I. It's not a matter of being perfect. It's that I don't have anything that I feel I need to, you know, create a. A better habit for. I think I have done better with, you know, health. Health related behaviors. I guess I could do more with snacking. I don't eat. I don't snack like a crazy amount, but I guess I could snack less, maybe. I don't know. That doesn't seem fun. Though, because it's like less of something. It's not really that exciting.
C
I want to learn a new skill. Yeah, I.
B
But I didn't have any skills. I'm that interest. Like, I have enough skills that I'm still feeling like I'm working on. Very skilled on that. I don't really want new ones because I'm gonna hit a. I'm gonna get in that. Oh, I forget what. What James Clear's term. You know, you're either take. You're taking action or you're planning. And planning doesn't always mean the same thing as doing. You have to do, you have to do. And I. I don't want to just end up doing more planning. I want to be doing. So I did more with mindfulness last year. I don't know if that's the best. Maybe I could strengthen that habit. Maybe that'd be good to do. I. I do a drop anchor exercise. I was doing it pretty readily, mostly because I was told that I could win a gift card if I was even more consistent with it. Then I didn't win a gift card, and then there are no more gift cards to be won. So now it's just something I kind of do. I have a thing on my phone that reminds me, and sometimes I do it and sometimes I don't. So I guess I could work on that. So strengthening a habit that I. I kind of have in there, you know, I have a lot of stuff. I guess I could make more time to engage with the stuff I have, but that doesn't seem very exciting because I either do or I don't, depending on my mood. I have, you know, a list of things that I'm always kind of chipping away at, like books I want to read per season and, you know, media I want to engage with in a season. I wanted to do more with tabletop role playing. Terms of using it, we're. We're going to have an episode about it coming out not. Not next month. But I've been regularly doing that almost every week for a number of months now. So that habit seems like it's going pretty well. So I guess you're right. D. Yeah, no, I. I am perfect and don't have much to work on. Thanks.
C
I wonder what TTRPG stood for.
B
That's what it Tabletop. You played under the table. It be a ut sure. Rpg. But no, I think I will just take those habits of mindfulness and more health behaviors. I think maybe I'll look at sort of, you know.
C
Right.
B
Healthier foods or focusing on eating more kind of vegetable snacks. How about that? That's a good one. I can work on that.
C
Or like using your stuff. Yeah, I think that is actually a good one because we own a lot of stuff.
B
It is, it is.
C
You could like make a point to, you know, use, utilize something, some aspect of it every day.
B
It is, it is true. I think some of our stuff. One of the problems is I, I think, I don't know if it'll be this way this winter, but man, do we have one day in the entire week in which everyone in our family is even home at the same time to sort of, you know, engage in something together. And if not, we're driving somewhere. So it's really hard to engage with the. There's not a lot of time to engage with the stuff between everything that we have to do. But you know what, carve out a time.
C
Right.
B
Reduce some friction or just play by myself. I got a lot of games. I'm looking at the games right now is kind of what I'm thinking anyway. Those are some fun ideas. I like all yours. Mine. Mine are more tweaks to habits that exist, I think, but that's fine too. That's because by the end of the year, 1% better per day. We all know I'll be 37 times better. And this as. As will all of you, Jackie, if you write 30 minutes a day, by the end of the year, if you Keep increasing by 1%, you will be writing 3,700 pages a day.
A
I'm not going to increase. I'm going to work up to that. I'm not gonna. I'm working up to it. I'm not starting with that.
B
But if you get to 3,700 pages a day by the end of the year, that's pretty great.
C
I mean.
A
Yeah, I guess you're right.
B
I haven't read it. Maybe it's terrible. It's like 3,700 pages. It just, just you read at various times, you know, no good. Would it be impressive that. That's too much water. Don't drink that much water.
C
I was going to say it's dangerous. Drink 37 gallons of water a day.
B
Listen to the changing criterion design. That's where you want to. That's. You use that for your water drinking habits. You're going to go overboard.
C
Okay.
B
All right, what else we got coming up?
C
What do we need to say?
B
Well, I think we need to say in terms of not just our own stuff, but we've got a. We've got a conference coming up in, coming up this month, right?
C
Yeah.
B
And it's one that we, we really like attending.
C
It's on my birthday.
B
Oh, I didn't notice that. Oh, look at that.
C
Yeah, we're talking about the Stone Soup Conference. It's going to be on January 23, which is a really a special day for me and maybe some others of you out there as well. If you share my birthday. Happy birthday. You can join us in attendance at the Stone Soup Conference on that day. It's a Friday as well. Friday birthday, best birthday. And it's just a one day conference. It's all online. It's super fun. We've gone maybe every year that they've had it. We're not, we're not talking there. We just come and listen to all the varying speakers and there's lots of great folks who are talking at this one.
B
We got some, some previous guests that are going to be presenting.
C
Yes. Dr. David Cox will be there, Paulie Giovanni will be there. Dr. Tiffany Kodak will be there. Our bud Matchicoria will be there. Dr. John Michael Garcia will be there and lots and lots of other folks as well. So it's a good, good time. And they're, they've given us a code for everyone to get. Let me make sure I tell you the right amount. 20 bucks off of the registration, which is awesome.
B
It is a good, it is a value, it is a value conference because you can see it wherever you are. And I think consistently every year it's just been like a good, just like slew of like good talk, good talk, good talk, good talk, good ideas, good ideas, you know, actionable steps. It's been great.
A
There's a lot of communication in the chat too, which I like.
B
Yeah.
C
Yep, always is. And the code is A B A I T26. So if you wanted to remember that, it's ABA Inside Track 26. 2026. So it's A B A I T26. And if you use that, then you get $20 off and it'll be, there'll.
B
Be a link to, to sign up and the code in, in the notes for the podcast player. Podcast player too. So you can look there. But if you listen to the whole podcast and then it goes to the deleted file, it'll be gone. So you have to look it up again. So hit pause right now, stop what you're doing, pause, register and then come back and you can listen to the last few minutes of, of the show. Yeah, beautiful. So great.
C
See you there.
B
Hopefully we'll see. Yeah. Please Jen, give us a shout out if you see us, see us in the chat because we tend to be, we tend to be there as much as we can throughout the day. It's great, great conference. All right. Well, I think the only other thing is we are, oh, speaking of habits, chipping away at our new website which will be launched to celebrate our 10 year anniversary in March. We are finally going to be moving to a new site that I think better captures sort of, you know, the ease of function of what our podcast is. Getting the podcast is as easy as it ever has been. We still just release that on your podcast players. But being able to find the episodes, being able to purchase C, making sure everything's up to date with the new requirements from the BACB for CES in the new year and that's actually not till the summertime. So we're trying to get ahead of times because we figure what better way to celebrate 10 years than ton of remaking the whole website for 300 plus episodes. But it's going to include, we're going to, you know, be including transcripts more readily. Almost done getting all those, all those set. I'm not doing those by hand. We have AI service that does that for us. We're going to have the additional quiz requirements on there, but there should be some fun quizzes as well as keeping.
C
The code words so fun and that'll be there for code words. It's not a BACB requirement but I think that personally, I think that that demonstrates you're listening more, to be quite honest with you, than just answering these questions. But, but they'll both be on there so you can check that out once it's launched and then by moving it over to this site. I think you will find it exciting in that you can set up your, your account there. It will, once you have your account, all course, they're called courses on there. Right. Like all courses that you've ever listened to will be saved in there so you can see them and then as you, when you complete them, you complete the quiz, then it sends you the PDF so certificate automatically. So that is going to be great for all of the listeners and great for me as well because until now I've been doing it every night.
B
Yeah. And Diana, what should people do? We won't be closing the old site quite yet, but that will be happening probably like about a year after the, the site launches. So what should people be kind of planning if, if they want to get ahead of this and start saving Their order. They have to save them or do something different.
C
No, they don't. They're not on the Squarespace site. We did this last month, too.
B
Well, we should do it every month, though, because. Listen, every month. Question. Last month, I. Yeah, but we want to share.
C
They're in their email.
B
Okay.
C
They always have come to them via their email, which actually, that won't change. So nothing in that regard changes. The only thing to note is that on Squarespace, you may have an account right now which. Which tells you what your order, your past orders have been. It doesn't have the CEU certificate attached, but it tells you what you've listened to. So if you wanted to go in there and jot those down so that you don't forget what those were, because eventually that information will be much harder to get. But you would also. You'll still have the certificate. So you still know what you listen to or what. Yeah, because you have all those certificates.
B
Okay. But you shouldn't have to do anything outside of making the account on the new site. Once that's up in March, It'll still be. Abainsidetrack.com will point to it. You'll still be able to get the links directly in any episode you go to. You know, if you download even old episodes, it'll just have the updated link in there. You'll just click it and get taken right to that kind of course page is what they, like Diana said what they call it the course page or the episode episode page. We use it interchangeably. And then you'll get everything, do everything you need to do, and it'll be a little bit faster and the CE will come right away and you won't have to make Diana rush to do that every single night. And only took 10 years, which, funnily enough, we found this site and the other day we were like, wow, this site. Is this a new site? Maybe it's like two years old. This site was founded four years before we started this podcast, so we could have been on this site at the very beginning.
C
Changed a lot, though, I don't think. Yeah, maybe what they can do now on that website was available then or.
B
It was like crazy expensive for. You know, I wonder if anyone listen to our podcast. Let's spend X amount, right?
C
Yeah.
B
To get on this plat, like, that's crazy. No one's going to do this. But 10 years later, it's worth.
C
It's worth the expense, monetary and a time investment for us to be moving this over. So we really do hope that you enjoy it and that it will serve your needs, our needs, and the BACB's needs.
B
Well, and also, speaking of habits again, Diana, now that you're not going to be doing CES every single night, you'll be able to do other stuff with the show, like on, maybe more online engagement.
C
Yeah, I'm going to. Ideally, I don't want to do online engagement, but I will ideally do a better job of posting various content that relates to the episodes that are recently coming out. I've done a bad job of that this year, so sorry to everyone out there. It was. It's just been a year, man.
B
So you're gonna be doing a lot of tick tock content and all that.
C
No one wants to see that.
B
No. Okay. All right, well, so lots of fun things still to come in this new year, but for the short term, we got a lot of fun episodes. We got the Stone Soup conference. And then, you know, if you have any extra time that you want to waste, you can wonder what the new website will look like. It's. It's cute. You know, it's. It's a website, though. It's mostly functional. All right, well, I think that brings us into the new year. Happy New Year to everybody. We hope you all had fabulous holiday season and are enjoying some time off as you listen to this. And if you celebrated Christmas or celebrated any of the holidays with those presents, we hope you got everything you wanted. And what that was probably was giving other people amazing gifts or passing along some fun knowledge. Right. Those are the best gifts of all. We will see you next week with the first of our fun filled episodes. But until then, keep responding. Bye.
A
Bye.
C
Bye.
A
