A
Welcome back, everybody, for another deep dive. And today. Well, today we're looking at AI.
B
Oh, yeah.
A
And all the craziness that's happening in the world of AI.
B
Yeah. Things are moving fast.
A
So fast.
B
Really fast.
A
Yeah. And we've got four articles that we're going to be kind of dissecting and picking apart and looking for those unexpected connections.
B
Yeah. Looking for those threads.
A
Yeah, exactly. So let's see, we've got one about Appleapple and their AI strategy. And then, oh, Elon Musk is suing Open AI.
B
Oh my goodness.
A
I know, it's crazy, right? Yeah. And then we've got AI predicting diabetes like 10 years in advance.
B
Wow. Yeah. That's incredible.
A
Which is amazing.
B
Yeah.
A
And then AI is writing substack newsletters.
B
Yeah. You're reading a B. I know.
A
Isn't that crazy?
B
That's wild.
A
Yeah. So let's jump right in with this Apple article.
B
Okay.
A
And it's all about this thing called private cloud compute. So basically what Apple is doing is they're saying we want to keep all of your AI processing on your device. Like your phone.
B
Yeah. Keep it local.
A
Exactly. So they're basically saying no to the cloud.
B
Yeah, Basically saying, you know, we're going to, you know, we're Apple, so we can do this, create these chips, they can do all this processing on the device.
A
Right.
B
Instead of sending it up to the cloud and having these, you know, potential security vulnerabilities.
A
Yeah. It's all about privacy.
B
Exactly.
A
Right.
B
Yeah.
A
So like all that data that your phone is collecting about you.
B
Right.
A
It's not going up to some, you know, server farm somewhere. Right. It's staying right there on your phone.
B
Which is really cool.
A
Which is kind of amazing when you think about it, like how powerful our phones have become.
B
Yeah.
A
My phone is more powerful than the computer I had in college.
B
Oh, I know. It's wild.
A
It's insane.
B
Yeah. And they just keep getting more and more powerful too.
A
Yeah. So is this like the end of the cloud?
B
Oh, that's a good question.
A
Like, are these giant data centers going to just become obsolete?
B
Well, I don't know. I think they'll evolve for sure.
A
Right.
B
Because there's still, there's still a need for, you know, large scale process. But I think for a lot of the, you know, day to day stuff that we do on our phones.
A
Right.
B
This edge AI is really going to take off.
A
It makes sense. Like if I'm asking Siri a question or, you know, I'm using Google Maps or something like that, it makes sense. That my phone could just handle that without having to send all that data up to the cloud.
B
Exactly. And it's faster that way too.
A
Fan faster. Yeah.
B
You know, you don't have that lag waiting for the data to go up and back down.
A
It's more efficient, private, faster. Yeah.
B
And I think you're going to see other companies follow suit.
A
Really?
B
I mean, Apple is kind of, you know, they're kind of leading the charge here.
A
They always are.
B
Yeah. But I think, you know, once consumers start to realize that, hey, you know, I can have all this AI power without sacrificing my privacy.
A
Right.
B
I think they're going to start demanding that from other companies too.
A
It's interesting to think about because like you said, Apple, they're always kind of on the cutting edge of this stuff.
B
Yeah.
A
And if they're doing this, it does feel like it could be a sign of things to come.
B
Right.
A
Like this could be the future of AI.
B
Yeah. A more decentralized future. A more privacy focused future.
A
Which is kind of a nice thought.
B
Yeah, for sure.
A
All right, well, speaking of, you know, doing things differently and shaking things up.
B
Yeah.
A
Let's talk about Elon Musk, because he is suing Open AI.
B
I know.
A
Which is the company that he co founded.
B
Yeah. He helped create this.
A
I know. It's so crazy.
B
It's wild.
A
So what is going on there?
B
Well, so he co founded OpenAI back in 2015.
A
Right.
B
With a bunch of other, you know, tech luminaries.
A
Yeah.
B
And the idea was to develop AI safely.
A
Yeah. For the benefit of humanity.
B
Right. And, you know, make sure that it doesn't, you know, turn into Skynet or something.
A
Yeah. Right.
B
But then he left in 2018.
A
Right.
B
And since then, OpenAI has partnered with Microsoft.
A
Yeah.
B
And Microsoft has invested billions of dollars.
A
Billions with a B.
B
Billions of dollars into OpenAI.
A
Yeah. And it seems like that's what's really got Musk's, you know, goat.
B
Yeah.
A
He's like, wait a minute, you were supposed to be this nonprofit, Right. You know, saving the world kind of organization, and now you're basically a for profit subsidiary of Microsoft, which is kind of the, you know, the evil empire in a lot of ways.
B
Right. Well, you know, it's interesting because, you know, you have these two competing visions for AI. Right. You have Musk, who's very much like, you know, we need to be careful. We need to proceed slowly.
A
Right.
B
We need to make sure that AI is aligned with human values.
A
Right.
B
And then you have, you know, Microsoft, he's like, well, we need to be competitive. We need to be, you know, first to market.
A
Right. They want to monetize it.
B
Yeah, exactly. So it's a really interesting clash of these two.
A
Yeah. It's a battle for the soul of AI. And the language that Musk is using in this lawsuit is pretty strong.
B
Oh, yeah. He's not holding back.
A
No. He's calling them a market paralyzing gorgon.
B
I agree.
A
What does that even mean?
B
I don't know.
A
Like, I don't even know what a gorgon is.
B
Like, a mythical creature.
A
Right. But, like, what does that mean in the context of AI?
B
I think he's just saying that OpenAI is, you know, stifling competition, that they're becoming a monopoly, and that that's dangerous.
A
Right. Because if they control AI, then they control everything, potentially.
B
Yeah.
A
Right.
B
It's a little scary.
A
It is a little scary. Yeah.
B
So we'll see how this lawsuit plays out.
A
Yeah.
B
But it's definitely something to keep an eye on, for sure. All right, well, let's move on to something a little less apocalyptic.
A
Okay.
B
And talk about how AI is being used in healthcare.
A
Okay.
B
This article blew my mind.
A
Yeah.
B
AI can now predict type 2 diabetes.
A
10 years in advance.
B
10 years in advance.
A
That's wild. Just by analyzing an ECG.
B
Yeah. Just from your heart.
A
Yeah. I mean, I always thought ECGs were just for, like, heart problems, if you're having a heart attack or something. But apparently there's all this information hidden in those electrical signals that can tell us about our overall health.
B
It's amazing.
A
Yeah. So the AI is basically looking for these subtle patterns that humans might miss, can flag people who are at risk.
B
Yeah. Ten years before any symptoms even appear.
A
That's incredible.
B
Yeah. So you can imagine, you go in for your annual checkup, and the doctor says, oh, well, you know, your heart looks great, but this AI analysis of your ECG suggests that you might be at risk for developing diabetes.
A
Right.
B
In the next decade. That gives you a huge window of opportunity to make changes, to make lifestyle changes.
A
Right.
B
To maybe prevent the disease altogether.
A
Wow. That's amazing.
B
Yeah, it's really exciting.
A
So, like, what kind of changes are we talking about?
B
Well, you know, things like managing your weight.
A
Right.
B
All those things that we know are important for preventing diabetes.
A
Right.
B
But now we have this tool that can tell us who's at risk.
A
Right.
B
So we can target those interventions.
A
Whoa. So it's like personalized medicine. Like, the AI is giving you this personalized risk assessment and then can work with your doctor to come up With a plan.
B
Exactly.
A
That's amazing.
B
Yeah. It's pretty cool.
A
And they're even talking about putting this AI into wearable devices.
B
Oh, yeah. Like your smartwatch.
A
Yeah.
B
Your watch can be like, hey, you know, you need to go for a walk.
A
Yeah. Or like, you need to lay off the sugar.
B
Exactly.
A
That's crazy.
B
They're pretty wild.
A
Okay, so we've talked about Apple.
B
Yeah.
A
We've talked about Elon Musk. We've talked about AI predicting diabetes. Now let's talk about something that honestly creeps me out a little bit.
B
AI writing substack newsletters.
A
Yeah.
B
So apparently there's this study that found that a significant number of substack newsletters.
A
Particularly in the finance space.
B
Yeah. Finance especially, are using AI to generate content.
A
Yeah. You're reading a bot and you don't even know it.
B
And you don't even know it.
A
Yeah.
B
Which is kind of messed up.
A
Yeah. It's a little shady.
B
Right. Like, if I'm paying for a newsletter.
A
Right.
B
It's because I value the writer's expertise, perspective.
A
Right. Yeah.
B
And if it turns out that it's just some algorithm churning out this content.
A
Yeah.
B
It feels like a violation.
A
Yeah. It feels like a betrayal.
B
Yeah.
A
Yeah.
B
So what are the ethical implications of this?
A
Well, I think the biggest one is transparency.
B
Right.
A
You know, people need to know if they're reading something that was written by a human.
B
Right.
A
Or buy a machine.
B
Right. And it's not just about the writing itself.
A
Right.
B
It's about the ideas.
A
Yeah. Right. Like, if I'm reading a financial newsletter.
B
Right.
A
And it's giving me stock tips, I want to know if those stock tips are coming from a human expert or from some algorithm that's just crunching numbers. Right. Because there's a big difference.
B
There is a big difference.
A
Yeah. And I think it's also about the quality of the content.
B
Yeah.
A
Right. Like, can an AI really replicate the nuance, the creativity.
B
Creativity.
A
The critical thinking of a human writer? I mean, I don't know.
B
I don't know either.
A
It's a good question.
B
And I think it's a question that we're going to have to grapple with.
A
Yeah.
B
More and more.
A
As AI gets better.
B
As AI gets better at writing.
A
Yeah. Because the technology is just going to keep advancing.
B
Exactly. And it's going to get harder and harder to tell the difference.
A
Yeah.
B
So I think we need to start having a serious conversation.
A
Yeah.
B
About the ethics of AI generated content.
A
Like how do we ensure that readers are informed.
B
Right.
A
And empowered to make their own choices.
B
Exactly.
A
Wow. We've covered a lot of ground in this deep dive into AI.
B
Yeah. It's been a whirlwind tour.
A
It really has. And it's kind of amazing to see just how much AI is already impacting our lives.
B
Right. It's everywhere you look.
A
Yeah. It's in our phones, it's in our cars, it's in our homes, it's writing our news.
B
Yeah. It's kind of crazy when you think about it.
A
It is kind of crazy. But, you know, it's not just about the technology itself.
B
Right.
A
It's about the implications of that technology.
B
Yeah. The ethical implications, social implications, the economic implications.
A
Right. And I think that's what we've really been trying to get at in this deep dive.
B
Yeah. To look beyond the hype.
A
Right. And really think about what this all means.
B
Yeah. For our future.
A
For our future. Yeah. So let's start with the big question.
B
Okay.
A
Is AI a threat to humanity?
B
That's the million dollar question, isn't it?
A
It is. It is. And I know we touched on this a bit earlier, but I think it's worth revisiting.
B
Yeah. I mean, it's a question that a lot of people are asking.
A
Yeah. And for good reason. When you see these headlines about AI becoming so powerful.
B
Right.
A
It's hard not to feel a little bit uneasy.
B
Yeah, I get it.
A
So what are your thoughts?
B
I think it's important to remember that AI is a tool. Like any tool, it can be used for good or for bad.
A
Right.
B
It all depends on the humans who are wielding that tool.
A
So it's not about the AI itself.
B
Right.
A
It's about us. It's about us and the choices that we make.
B
Exactly.
A
So what choices do we need to make?
B
Well, I think the first choice is to be aware.
A
Aware of what?
B
Aware of the potential risks of AI.
A
Okay.
B
Aware of the ethical challenges.
A
Right.
B
Aware of the ways in which AI can be used to manipulate or exploit people.
A
So we need to be educated.
B
We need to be educated and informed. Informed, yeah.
A
Okay, what else?
B
Well, I think we also need to be proactive.
A
Proactive in what way?
B
Proactive in shaping the development of AI.
A
Okay. So not just sitting back and letting it happen.
B
Right. We need to be involved in the conversation.
A
We need to have a seat at the table.
B
Exactly.
A
And how do we do that?
B
Well, I think there are a few things we can do.
A
Okay.
B
First, we can support organizations that are working to ensure that AI is developed ethically and responsibly.
A
Okay, like what kind of organizations?
B
Well, there are groups like The Future of Life Institute.
A
Okay.
B
The Partnership on AI, the AI Now Institute.
A
Okay.
B
These are all organizations that are doing really important work in this space.
A
Okay. So support those organizations.
B
Yeah. And we can also engage with our elected officials.
A
Right. Let them know that this is an issue that we care about.
B
Exactly. Because ultimately it's going to be up to policymakers to create the regulations and guidelines that will govern the development and deployment of AI.
A
So we need to make our voices heard.
B
We need to make our voices heard.
A
Yeah. Okay. So be aware, be proactive, make our voices heard. Anything else?
B
Why? I think the most important thing is to stay hopeful. I know it can be easy to get caught up in all the doom and gloom.
A
Right.
B
But I truly believe that AI has the potential to make the world a better place.
A
In what ways?
B
Well, I think AI can help us to solve some of the biggest challenges that we're facing.
A
Like what?
B
Like climate change.
A
Okay.
B
Like poverty, like disease.
A
Right.
B
I mean, the possibilities are really endless.
A
So it's not all bad.
B
It's not all bad. No.
A
There's a lot of potential for good.
B
There's a lot of potential for good. Yeah.
A
But it's up to us to make sure that AI is used for good and not for evil.
B
Right.
A
All right, well, that's a great note to end on. Yeah. I want to thank you for joining me on this deep dive into the world of AI. It's been a fascinating conversation.
B
It has.
A
And I hope our listeners. Listeners have learned a lot.
B
Me, too.
A
So that's it for today's show. Until next time, stay curious, stay informed, and stay engaged.
B
And stay hopeful.
A
And stay hopeful.
