Amateur Hour is a sports podcast covering the biggest topics across Australia’s two biggest sporting codes, the NRL and AFL. Hosted by great mates Jack and Bec, think of it as a poor man’s Hamish and Andy for footy nuffies just like us.
Each month, we’ll dive into the hottest issues and biggest talking points from both the men's and women's competitions. We’ll do our best to put our biases aside as we dissect all of the key moments and plays of the season so far.
This podcast has been years in the making. Jack Aubrey and Bec Miller first met as Sydneysiders but now call Melbourne, Australia’s sporting capital, home. Jack has previously written online articles and live blogs for The Roar, while Bec is in her sixth season as a professional AFLW player for the mighty Richmond Tigers. She’s also spent time behind the mic, calling games for Melbourne’s own 3AW radio station. At the end of the day, we’re just a couple of nuffies with a microphone in hand, so let’s see how this goes!

AFLW pre-season is officially underway, and Bec gives listeners an inside look at the new Tigerland regime. Meanwhile, the coaching carousel keeps spinning across both the NRL and AFL, with more coaches biting the dust… although one had a 78-week notice period. And yes, it’s that time of the year again. Jack and Bec reluctantly turn their attention to the looming men's NRL State of Origin series, where as long suffering NSW Blues fans, fear tends to outweigh confidence. But there may be some hope on the horizon, with the women in sky blue already getting the job done and wrapping up the series 2-0.Speaking of representative footy, Origin is heading to AFLW. The duo unpack the upcoming Australia vs Ireland showcase match and what it could mean for the women’s game. There’s also plenty of love for the greats of sport, with Scott Pendlebury on the verge of history, although the fun police might be spoiling the celebrations. Plus, Bec jumps firmly onto her high horse over another all-time games record she reckons deserves just as much attention. This month’s Third Person In segment sees a guest dare to dream about premiership success… but can fans of their team actually believe it might happen? Before Jack and Bec lock in their Origin predictions and finish with something AFL fans probably haven’t thought about in a while. Strap in… or strap on. Either way, it’s another big month of Amateur Hour.Credit to the third party audio we used: sitcomespecials0016 (7:17), Channel 9 (10:00).

It’s a milestone moment for Amateur Hour, ticking off 1000 downloads, and Jack and Bec are back to celebrate the only way they know how: talking plenty of footy and a bit of everything in between. The life updates are flowing, with Bec counting down the days until pre-season kicks off for her 2026 AFLW campaign, while the duo reflect on the reaction to Jack’s big announcement from last episode. Then it’s into the thick of it. A massive few weeks across both codes sees the first coaching casualty of the NRL season, a cracking Easter round full of nail-biters, and another successful Gather Round lighting up Adelaide in the AFL. AFLW also gets its moment in the spotlight, with discussion around upcoming men’s and women’s double headers in August, plus a very wordy press release around a potential International Rules concept which didn't actually say that much. This month’s Third Person In segment delivers one of the most thoughtful listener questions yet, before its balls to the wall.. or chopping board more like it in 'Tell Me Something I haven't thought about lately.' And of course, the amateurs wrap it all up the only way they can, throwing out their latest predictions for the weeks ahead.Credit to the third party audio we used: sitcomespecials0016 (5:31).

The duo run their eye over the early stages of the 2026 season across both codes, diving into the biggest headlines so far, including Alex Johnston’s historic record-breaking try that sparked a mass pitch invasion. Then the attention flips to the AFL, where Jack and Bec debate whether Opening Round is here to stay. There’s also a listener question in this month’s Third Person In segment, while Jack casts our minds back to a time when a club handed out a truly bizarre punishment to a player who stepped out of line.
