Hey there folks. It is Thursday, May 21 and the billionaire founder of an international fashion brand fell to his death during a hike. Now two years later, police think his son might have pushed him off that cliff. And with that welcome to this episode of Amy and tj. Role of this has family, inheritance, money, fashion all involved and it's a brand people know. I didn't realize how big it was. The only time I usually go in there is when you drag me into a store.
A
Yeah, we're talking about Mango. Basically it's Zara's biggest rival and it's booming. I mean this fast fashion chain is taking off here in the United States. Now I believe they have 65 stores and counting. But year to year there is massive growth. This is a multi billion dollar company and a lot of money was on the line. Here's the deal though. The founder, 71 year old Isaac on ditch. So yes, he falls tragically during a father son hike two years ago. But he fell to his death within a few months of his son finding out that the inheritance he thought would be his wasn't necessarily going to him. Questions, questions began to surface.
B
Movie this, We've seen this plot in the movie. That's, that's incredible. Okay, so I'm intrigued. Do tell me more.
A
All right, so initially, and this is where we begin, when we heard about, or at least when police heard about this fall, December 14, 2021. Isaac Ondich falls 500ft from a cliff near his home. He's an experienced hiker. This is a popular hiking trail that he's been at too often. And he goes on a father son hike. His son tells police immediately that this was a tragic accident, that his father was actually trying to take pictures when he fell to his death.
B
He said he didn't, he didn't see it even. How did he say he was head
A
of his father turned around, his father's gone. He knew his father was stopping to take a picture. The next thing he knows, his father is not there, had slipped and fallen to his death. And so initially, yes, there was an investigation, but they closed it a few weeks later. Mango, the company put out a press release announcing the founder's death, Isaac's death as a tragic accident. End of story. Right.
B
This was a big, big deal. This guy, I mean Robes is impressive. His story and his backstory, how it started it from nothing essentially and built it to. I didn't realize they were this big robes around the world. So this was a big international story and business story at the time that this founder died. And he's one of the richest men in the world.
A
Yes. Worth $4.5 billion at the time of his death. Okay, so fast forward to March of 2025. Police reopen the investigation into Isaac's accident. And now we have just found, or we've just been given access to the investigation report that came out following the arrest of his 45 year old son. Jonathan Onditch was arrested this week. He's not been formally charged yet, but he has officially been arrested for suspicion of homicide.
B
Yeah, so what changed?
A
Well, wait until you hear what police uncovered. Okay, remember when I told you that he told police Jonathan told police that his dad just slipped and fell? Well, his injuries, the autopsy from Isaac Onditch, they are inconsistent with an accidental fall. That's according to the coroner's report. In fact, forensics reports found that his injuries appeared, quote, as if he had launched himself down a slide feet First.
B
Wow.
A
That doesn't sound like a slip and fall. You would fall head first. You tripped and fell. You wouldn't go feet first and slide.
B
Wow. Okay.
A
Okay, then there are inconsistent statements from Jonathan. And first, you know he told police that his father was taking pictures the moments before he fell, Right. Well, Isaac's phone was found in his pocket, secured. That didn't make a lot of sense.
B
He had nothing else on. There was no other camera available. People don't. Yeah, your phone is your camera these days.
A
So if your phone is secured in your pocket and you fall feet first. Doesn't make a lot of sense.
B
Unless he was wrong about him not taking pictures. I guess maybe you could explain that.
A
Still not convinced.
B
Give me one more.
A
How about this?
B
All right.
A
Jonathan made three separate visits to the very site his father fell the week before his father's death.
B
It's a popular spot, I hear. Beautiful. And one of his favorites. You don't have me yet. You don't have me yet. Robes.
A
All right, here is what the judge said in this report, or at least after reading the support report. He said that it was clear to him that Jonathan had been planning and studying the site. He said it may have been non accidental with active and premeditated involvement. The judge also went on to say there is sufficient evidence to. To consider the suspect. That's Jonathan, criminally responsible for the offense of homicide. Okay, now it goes on. The report continues and says motive. You're asking what could the motive be?
B
Wait, go back to the judge. That first line from the judge again. What?
A
He said that looking at Jonathan's they were able to track his cell phone and see that he got exactly to the site where his father died three separate occasions the week before his father fell at that very site. The judge said that that suggested that there was planning and study of the site.
B
Study of the site is the line I was study getting back.
A
Planning and study of the site. Now this investigation, this report also suggests a possible financial motive. And it specifically notes that Jonathan had just found out that his father planned to change his will. Instead of giving him and his. He has two sisters. All of the fortune that he had amassed over the years. He was instead going to create a foundation to help those in need. He was planning to give all his money away to charity. He was planning to change his will. And Jonathan had just found out about this change of plans.
B
Isn't this the plot of the first knives out? I think this is exactly what happened. So. So wait here. Had the will already been changed?
A
No.
B
Or he was. He's got to die ahead of time.
A
Yeah. No, he wasn't so stupid as to wait until the will was changed. That's why the timing is very suspicious.
B
It's three of them, right? Siblings, yes.
A
There are two sisters. And then there is Jonathan Adage. He's the oldest. He's the only son, and he is now, by the way, the chairman of the family holding company, and he's the vice chairman of the board for Mango. Now, were reports that there was some ill will, perhaps, between son Jonathan and father Isaac, because Isaac did not make him the president CEO of Mango. Instead, he tapped someone else. And so there was word that maybe Jonathan was offended by that, was upset by that. And so there was. The folks had said that Jonathan and Isaac went on this father son walk to kind of talk it out.
B
Okay.
A
To talk out any issues they may have had, which also is slightly suspicious.
B
So what are we. What are we saying? He was standing to lose if his dad had changed his will?
A
Billions of dollars.
B
A literal B.
A
With a B. Billions of dollars. And because Isaac Ondage died, and he was only 71, by the way, like a young. And if you've seen pictures of him, he's a fit, avid exercise outdoorsman. He hiked almost daily. Like, this is a dude who worked his butt off to amass the fortune he had and really worked on his health. He seemed like a beloved good guy, actually.
B
Swear, I. I had to confirm. I saw his picture. I'm like, that can't be him. He looks good.
A
Yeah. 71 years old. So it wasn't like he was some elderly man who fell to his death on this hike. No, he. He was a fit, active dude, and look, he worked his ass off. You mentioned Mango and the story behind his success. He started this company in the 1980s with one store selling T shirts in Barcelona, and he was able to start there and build this unbelievable brand. And they have done gangbusters. And by the way, it's only getting better and doing better, and that's rare in this. This day and age, because retailers, certainly fashion retailers, are struggling. And this brand, and Mango specifically is doing gangbusters. They had a record year last year.
B
Well, that's. So had the. I have this question. Had. What happened to the inheritance? What happened to the money? What. Has everything been held up since he died or had things been split up and the son already is in possession of whatever that inheritance was?
A
Well, he's now the chairman of the family holding company. The family owns 95 of mango and he has. So he's in charge. He is in charge of it all. So whatever his father's will was, remained the same. He never had the chance to change it. Oh, my goodness. So, yes, Isaac Ondich stood to lose a lot and now has secured it all.
B
Can I ask you, too, I didn't see anything from the company since the son was arrested. Did I overlook it? Have you seen them say anything one way or another?
A
The company has not said anything, but his family certainly has. And when we come back, we're going to tell you what Isaac Ontich's family is saying, what the company is saying, and certainly it might surprise you because, look, he has been under suspicion. Now, when they reopened this investigation in March, everyone knew that they were looking into whether or not Jonathan Onditch could possibly be criminally responsible for his father's death. We'll tell you what his family is saying about him when we come back. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers. And guess what? We have some big news. What's the news?
B
Huge news.
E
We created our own podcast called hey Jonas, we invented a podcast. Well, we didn't invent it.
C
We.
E
We just contributed to first people to do podcasts. Pretty. Yeah, pretty wide range of podcast, but this one's extra special. So how did we. How do we actually come up with the name hey Jonas. Guys, I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it and well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes, I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing a bit for the podcast. People could call in and say hey Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad hey Jonas and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that. Guys, listen to hey Jonas on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it.

A
Welcome back everyone to this episode of Amy and TJ where we are reading a true crime drama. And I say reading because I've been reading up on it, but we're, it's, it's unbelievable that this is actually a true story. They always say truth is stranger than fiction and this is one of those stories where that is absolutely true. We're talking about seen this movie. Yeah. 45 year old Jonathan Anderson.
B
Literally. We've seen this in a movie.
A
Yeah.
B
You kill somebody before they can change the will and cut you out of it ropes. We've seen this plot replacement repeatedly in movies. I didn't know it happened in real life with billions of dollars. Literally.
A
Yeah. And for the past five years he's gotten away with it. If he's in fact guilty, we can't assume that he is obviously innocent until proven guilty. But there are certainly there's a motive that's very obvious. There was the opportunity that was clearly there. There are no witnesses and so police are having to go by the forensics in this at this point they have to go by the autopsy, what the crime scene, or maybe it's not a crime scene, but what the actual scene of the incident is telling them about what happened. And they have to follow the money. And it all points right now to Jonathan Ondage. And this is a big deal. This is a. This is a prominent family in Barcelona in Spain. The Ondich family is one of the wealthiest families in all of Spain, as you might imagine. This is just all the local papers and press are covering right now with Jonathan Ondage arrested this week for his father's death. And look, they're holding off on formal charges right now. Looks like they're just trying to get all their ducks in a row. But their family has been just very vocal from the beginning. From the moment the accident happened to when the police investigation was reopened. They have declared Jonathan innocent. They stand by him in every way. Jonathan's attorney said after these, this arrest this week, they said the homage, the homicide allegations against their clients are unfounded and have stigmatized an innocent man.
B
Wow.
A
All right, so there's very strong language defending Jonathan not only from his defense team, which you would expect, but also from his family and from Mango. And they still have announced Isaac's death. They still insist it was a tragic accident. So that's of note. But look, we mentioned when Isaac died, his net worth $4.5 billion. So I don't know what that company stands at right now, but I do know this. They had a 13% growth from year to year. And they say it, they're just bringing in money just hand over fist like
B
a lot of companies can. 13% year over year.
A
Percent. They said it was a record breaking year. And yes, there are 65 locations as of March. They just added a Mango in the Mall of America in Minneapolis, which apparently is a big deal. We have a Mango stor here in Soho in New York City, which I have absolutely been to. Been to Mango in Spain, by the way. So, yeah, if you've ever been to Zara or H and M, it's basically a version of that. But they are, look, they are Zara's main rival and they're doing really well.
B
Wow. But they have continued to do so since the death.
A
Correct?
B
Right. And a lot of people haven't been following this case. They'll hear a little more. I don't know how much of a threat this could be to the company, to the brand overall. If you have your CEO going to prison for killing the CEO before that, who was his dad?
A
Well, he's not the CEO.
B
Excuse me, Excuse me, Excuse me.
A
But he.
B
Yes, but yeah, the guy in charge, for the most part, I'm just saying the guy at the top of Mango it is. Are the customers going to even be
A
aware going probably Not. Probably not. But this is certainly a stain on the family and a stain on the company. Look, he is, he's not the CEO, but he's the vice chairman of the board of directors for Mango. So believe me, he holds a very prominent position and he's the chairman of the family holding company. And as we pointed out, they own 95 of mango. So literally, he is the face of the family. He's the face of the company. And he has been with this company from the very beginning. From the moment he, he got out of college, he began working for his father. This is the family business and he is the face of it. He is the head of it. What it would mean for Mango worldwide and for people like me or Sabine or my daughters who like to go to Mango for fast fashion. Right. We're going to keep going. This isn't going to affect business in that way. But my God, this will have far reaching effects for the family, for their legacy, for their reputation in Spain. This is. Again, I can't. When I started looking into who this family is, this is Spain, one of Spain's most prominent families. It's. Yeah, it's close to. I'm trying to think what the comparison would be here. Maybe like the Musks. There isn't a Musk family. There's Elon, but. Well, like the Bezos. There's not really a family there either. But it's, it's on that level.
B
Please keep naming families.
A
Yeah, those are all broken families. Must look to child number 13 now. Right. With six different women. I don't even know. I'm not judging. It's just not comparable. I'm trying to think of a family. Oh, you know what it's like to me, it remind me of the Waltons, maybe like, okay, there we go. There we go. Finally, I came up with something.
B
I go to Arkansas. The Tysons.
A
The Tyson hunt.
B
A family legacy of some kind in business.
A
Tyson Foods. Like where you've actually got a family that owns the company.
B
Murdochs. How about that?
A
Yes. Okay. There are plenty. But that is what the on Ditch family is in Space Spain. Just to give you some perspective. Sorry I went down a, a different, a different road. I didn't mean to go down. Just trying to think of really rich billionaires that we all can think of.
B
But yeah, I really wish we were rolling video on this particular podcast because
A
you can't stop laughing.
B
Man, that was good.
A
Oh, my goodness. But look, there's more to come with this case because we're still awaiting formal charges. We will certainly follow this but wanted to put this on your radar. Especially anyone who likes mango. Just kind of interesting and a little creepy and wow, a made for TV movie. If this in fact turns out to be true, a father son hike was not potentially an accident till fall. It was a premeditated push. And that is what a court is going to find out. Or at least we'll see whether or not they press formal charges against Jonathan and Itch. But we will be watching and in the meantime, we always appreciate you listening. I'm Amy Robach alongside T.J. holmes. We will talk soon.
