Joe
What is that?
Patrick
Oh, yeah, it's a World cup holder.
Elle
Like the soccer tournament.
Patrick
World cup holder for the world.
Joe
Fits every car, holds every cup.
Host Joe
It has a Carvana logo.
Patrick
Carvana made it.
Host Joe
They buy and sell cars, so they
Patrick
made a car cup holder.
Joe
So.
Patrick
Got any good cups lately? Used to.
Elle
I just couldn't figure out where in
Host Joe
the world to put them.
Patrick

Take
Patrick
your seat. The cards are flying high. Shuffle up and deal at the Aces Lie longest running show. Yeah, we've seen it all. From the river to the rail we answer the call.
Host Joe
Welcome back to another episode of the anti app poker podcast where every hand is an opportunity to every player is a friend. And every episode is a winning experience. Elle and I are back around the poker table.
Elle
I'm ready to go cruising. Yeah.
Host Joe
You know, we took out that little beginning intro last week and I never even addressed it. It was just gone. And so.
Elle
Well, then I just sit here. If you're watching. I just sit here. Like, yeah. Huh. Exactly. I think we need to tag team that or something maybe.
Patrick
Yeah.
Elle
Kind of an awkward cause, but. And I like it.
Host Joe
Yeah.
Elle
It's a. It's a different take on how to open the show, but I like it.
Host Joe
Yeah. But I just thought we should at least address it. It's just gone. I was surprised that I didn't get emails, actually. People are like, what happened here at the beginning?
Elle
It's working.
Host Joe
Yeah. I do want to. I want to start out talking about Saquon poker Room because.
Elle
Oh, my gosh, I cannot wait.
Host Joe
We're so excited about being there in October.
Elle
Yes.
Host Joe
But they've got a lot going on right now.
Elle
Yeah. That we really want to talk. Number one, they have been named California's best poker room three years running. Not just one, not just two, but three years running. And that's not an easy title to have to hold on to. There's so many serious competition poker rooms in the area. And so big kudos to you guys. You know, one thing we talk about is like, what do you look for?
Host Joe
Yeah.
Elle
In a room. And there's lots of things that we feel passionate about when we go to a poker room, and one of them is giving back to players. And Saquon is doing that. There's a lot of ways to give cash game players cash back.
Host Joe
Yeah. They've got high hand extravaganza, which pays out every half hour. They're giving away a share of $7,000 in high hand prizes every Friday.
Elle
So, you know, the high hand, when there's a high hand prize, it's very interesting to see how the play changes.
Host Joe
Oh, for sure it is.
Elle
I finally, I kind of looked at you one time and I was, I think it was in Baltimore, and I was like, what is going on? And you were like, it's a high hand night. And I was like, okay, more please. But yeah, $7,000 in high hand prizes every Friday. We, you know, we like to talk about maximizing our value as poker players, and promotions like that definitely are definitely going to add your bankroll and your bottom line over the course of a year if you happen to be the winner.
Host Joe
And this drive me wild.
Elle
Oh, my gosh, I'm so excited. I think I sent it to you as soon as I saw it. Yeah, I would love to win that. They call them side by sides or atb, atv.
Host Joe
Yeah, yeah.
Elle
Really unique promotion that they have going on. So between now and August 22nd, you
Host Joe
can earn entries to win.
Elle
I'm gonna read this because it's pretty serious to get the, the make and model right.
Host Joe
Well, it's a. Don't you think it's a 2026 Can Am Commander Max XT 700. And no, that wasn't from memory. It's. It's on the screen.
Elle
Well, one of you at, at Sequan is going to walk away with a brand new one. And then on August 23rd, the next day, they're going to be drawing five $100 cash winners every hour.
Host Joe
Yeah, every.
Elle
Just go sit, fold for an hour, for God's sakes. You could win $100 back just being there.
Host Joe
I mean, you talked about maximizing, you know, our, our roi, so to speak.
Elle
For sure.
Host Joe
That's, that's a pretty good way to do it. So I think also one of the things that I find myself doing and I think poker players do in general, is overlooking the, the loyalty cards.
Elle
Oh, no, I'm always looking up. I always go in and go, what are my points? Yeah, I'm one of those girlies where I go, well, what can I get? Can I get a free spin? Can I get a dessert? Have I earned some points?
Host Joe
I just, I think that, that poker players are accustomed to kind of ignoring them because for so long, those rewards points weren't geared toward poker players. They were true.
Elle
We talked about that in Arizona.
Host Joe
Yeah, they're geared more toward the slot player or the, the action player out there where, where the casino has more of the edge. Right, Right. But Sequan does a good job of including the poker room in things like this. And so you definitely want to check out the Club Sequan card. Obviously it's free to sign up.
Elle
Right.
Host Joe
But beyond poker, it gives players discounts on dining. Like you mentioned, you've got access to giveaways.
Elle
There's property wide, property wide benefits. So I'm curious if the golf course is included.
Host Joe
Yeah, that's.
Elle
I'm just wondering. We don't, I don't know. But they've got just awesome cashback rewards in San Diego in the city that you can get from that card, which I think is really interesting. It's not just on the casino property and there's just some of these things that people need to be aware of. So we're excited to be there for sure. October 23rd through 25th. We don't know which bookend are we going to get there early or we're going to stay there late. We're not sure. But we can't wait to be there. And we definitely can see why players keep voting it that one of the best poker rooms in the region. Enjoy the promotions, get out there, put your name in the hat, get a card and before we get there.
Host Joe
Right. And play responsibly. Poker supposed to be fun first and foremost. So the promotions and such are just a bonus. So also the WSOP store, store, store, store.
Elle
I'm going to go shopping in December.
Host Joe
They, they open their, their first flagship retail store that's like a permanent brick
Elle
and it's a brick and mortar. It's not the one that they put up every year that is still going on.
Host Joe
Right.
Elle
You can still go and get, you know, sweatshirt or a shirt or sweatpants and put your own patches on it and do all that you can. You can buy the retro themes that they've had like the throwback themes they're bringing. You can still purchase swag slash merch inside Paris.
Host Joe
Yeah.
Elle
But there is a brick and mortar year round store that is nestled between Horseshoe and Paris and it's amazing.
Host Joe
Yeah. Well, they, they had their ribbon cutting and Jack Binion was there for that which was cool. But the store's over 2,300 square feet and I guess that's the largest any place.
Elle
Well, I would assume I, I tried to be sneaky because this is a year we are not going to Vegas
Host Joe
during so many things summer.
Elle
And we're having some major fomo.
Host Joe
Right.
Elle
But our friend Dustin Scarra is there. He's our Arizona ambassador.
Host Joe
And we've got other people going that have told us, hey, I'm going at this time and that time and whatever.
Elle
Right. So Dustin actually sent me a video and walked through the store to see if there's anything I would like.
Host Joe
Oh, did he really?
Elle
Oh, yeah. I told you. I was trying to be sneaky. I was trying to be sneaky because you had mentioned the jacket.
Joe
Yeah.
Elle
Negreanu had on. And I thought it. I thought it was handmade for him because you can tell the stitching and everything is very clearly planned. And so I thought, there is no way that that jacket is going to be in the WSOP store. And I asked Dustin to look for it and he found it.
Host Joe
And.
Elle
And it's $450.
Host Joe
Here's the funniest part about this.
Elle
So I said, I don't know that I would have a marriage if I bought a $450 jacket just on the fly. Because you're just not somebody to drop a lot of change on clothing. It's not one of the things that's your favorite place to spend money. So I said, I think I'm gonna pass, but thank you for looking it up. But now I found out why. Because it's a limited edition.
Host Joe
Yeah.
Elle
And the WSOP has not asked us to mention this and neither has the artist. I just think it's an interesting thing that they have a limited edition jacket running and they've sold out and they're on backorder now.
Host Joe
Are they really?
Elle
Yeah.
Host Joe
Oh, wow.
Elle
So if that is something you notice Daniel Negroni wearing. Yes. You can purchase it.
Joe
It's $400.
Elle
$450. There is no online presence. I even messaged the WSOP.
Host Joe
Did you really?
Elle
I did.
Host Joe
You were trying really hard.
Elle
I did. I tried really hard because I wanted to see if I could purchase it online, have it delivered, not have somebody pick it up, ship it to us. Da, da da da. They. They don't have an online shop yet. I'm sure that's coming because there. I wasn't the only person to ask. There's people in the comments.
Host Joe
I appreciate you trying, of course, but the funny part about it was that you were trying and you were. We've had a lot going on this week.
Elle
Well, we had a group chat, you, me and Dustin. And I had a chat with Justin. Dustin. And then he accidentally dropped something in that chat he wasn't supposed to. And then I did. And I go, fine. Surprise. Over.
Host Joe
I. The funny thing is I was recording this whole time and so.
Joe
Or.
Host Joe
Or editing whatever I was doing. I was working. And then I have. I don't know how many tech missed texts and I hadn't even, you know, I went upstairs and I hadn't even talked to you yet. And then all of a sudden I was like, oh, what. What is happening here? And I was like, you're like, run text.
Elle
We. We both let the cat out of the bag right around the same time. So he was playing poker and was in three or four group chats. I was with our granddaughters and working and texting. So it was just. It was cluster. Yeah, it is. That's. You don't do. You shouldn't do that when you're trying to surprise someone. Anyways, excited for wsop. Lots of stuff coming out of there. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching reels for the seniors events because let me tell you, these men are not holding back. Some of them, they are done.
Host Joe
That's the seniors.
Elle
And as. As truth is, as you age, you have less and less patience for people. And you also just say it like it is. There's. The filter is slowly fading away. And it has been really fun to just see what people are saying to each other or just out loud. Like they're just. They are mad at themselves. Like, this one guy just got up and goes, I just suck at poker. Why do I even do this? Like, why am I here?
Host Joe
And I'm like, thought that right?
Patrick
I know.
Elle
And I said, oh, shit, I wish I could have given you a hug and just, you know, taken him out for a coffee or a drink. Like it's. It's gonna be all right. But no filter. He. It's not as if you have thought it to yourself or said it to somebody later. It's literally as you're getting knocked out of the tournamen. And I just. It's been. Some of these reels have been funny. Like, we just have to talk about Negreanu and Kristen Fox and Cabral.
Host Joe
Everybody is getting after him now.
Elle
And who is the. Who is the guy in seat 7 who literally is yelling? And then the floor comes over and says, you can't yell. And he goes, he's yelling. And this is how it's going to go. I'm going to yell if he yells. And if we can't yell, then neither one of us can. And I was like, well, the.
Host Joe
The irony. The irony was that they were both telling each other to be quiet. They're like, can you be quiet? Can you be quiet?
Elle
Well, I, I say this a lot on this show. Being a school previous school teacher, I was like, flashback to seventh grade, seventh grade classroom. This is a common occurrence. And I was like wondering how the floor slash teacher was going to handle that. So anyhow, the Cabral story continues. I'm not going to give him any more time. Right. At all. But those have been some fun things coming out of it. And then also we are going to give a major shout out to a dear friend and contributor. Jasmine Claparich is now a doctor.
Host Joe
That's incredible.
Elle
I mean, it's not incredible. It's impressive. It's encouraging, it's exciting. The thing may be incredible too. The,
Host Joe
the thing that is impressive is that she's not just focusing on school. She's contributing to the magazine. She's playing, she's traveling. She's going to be joining us in the Alaska cruise. And why do we mention her?
Elle
She's a doctor of occupational therapy. Yes, she's an ot and not only that, but she is a poker player. And she is out for the best interest of players and dealers.
Host Joe
Yeah, she's in their health. While she's on our cruise in, in Alaska, she's going to be leading some sessions that are focused on like, stretches, mobility, like exercises to ergonomics help people. Yeah, that word.
Elle
The ergonomics of your job. But also as a poker player. And the reason we love Jasmine is she's not one of those super crazy fitness nuts. I mean, she practices quite a bit in her own personal life. Yoga and Pilates and, and those types of exercises. But she's very practical and she's also highly in tune with wanting the best for the poker community. And so we just want to say congratulations to her. It was a big accomplishment. It was very cool to watch her family in Vegas for the first time. They were at the Mayfair for brunch. I'm not sure that the females in her family were ready for that, but it was hilarious. It was awesome. It was absolutely hilarious. It was wonderful. But she's also been spotlighting. Another reason why I wanted to mention her is during wsop, she has met with a dealer school to understand more. She's been very supportive of dealers during the the WSOP with this new rating scale. She's bringing a lot of attention to what we can do around supporting dealers and being aware of how difficult their job is. And she actually is going to have an interview in this month's magazine. It's going to be coming out a Little late because we're on a cruise this month, but really, really, really excited to learn from her and excited for her to now have her doctorate and be on the way to taking care of our community.
Host Joe
Yeah, it's phenomenal job.
Elle
Congratulations.
Host Joe
Also friend of the show, Calvin Anderson.
Elle
Oh, exciting.
Host Joe
Wins the $10,000 Razz Championship eight years later for the second time. That's right.
Elle
Takes it back. So he won eight years ago and now six. WSOP bracelet.
Host Joe
Yeah. And. And a little more than. Than 357, 000.
Elle
So that's also awesome.
Host Joe
Yeah.
Joe
Never.
Elle
Never hurts. You love Raz.
Host Joe
I do. I really love Raz. But it. I think it might be one of the most misunderstood games in poker.
Elle
Why?
Host Joe
Because people think it's. It's more luck. Like, there's not even. Calvin was even joking about it. Like, people were talking about how that game in particular, Raz is more about catching cards and the luck of that than it. There is skill. But his joke about that after he won was that that's kind of what you want people to think. So if people are focused on.
Elle
Interesting.
Host Joe
Oh, this is a. This isn't a skill game. Then the person who actually has the edge can take advantage of that. So there you go, Calvin. Yeah. I think that mixed games in general, I think people need to get more involved into.
Elle
Well, look up the mixed game festival, because Lupe has one going on. There's a mixed game festival somewhere this year. I've got to now check my dates, since I just looked at.
Host Joe
Everybody has the. The one. But also, you know.
Elle
Oh, our dear friend.
Host Joe
But he didn't.
Elle
He didn't come back. Robbie.
Host Joe
Yeah. Robbie Straczynski has his in Vegas as well.
Elle
Yeah. It was a Resorts World two years
Host Joe
ago, and Resource World is the one that ended up not being able to go because he wasn't able to make it.
Elle
But we saw him at Resorts World.
Host Joe
Yeah, we did see him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then he's got one at the Bellagio.
Elle
Cool.
Host Joe
So.
Elle
Well, we also play mixed game once a month on Patreon Online. Not on Patreon, but with our Patreon team supporters. That. It's taught me a lot. It's not my favorite. I sometimes go. I just. I don't know if I have it in me because I have to think differently, but it's really helped.
Host Joe
I really think that playing mixed games helps your hold' em game because you look at things differently from that perspective.
Elle
I agree.
Host Joe
But. Oh, and another side story from the Razz Tournament.
Elle
Okay.
Host Joe
The Ex Former. Whatever you want to say. German soccer star.
Elle
Okay. I can't remember his name.
Host Joe
Max Cruz.
Elle
Okay.
Host Joe
He made the final table and finished sixth in Raz.
Elle
Way to go, Max. Way to go.
Host Joe
He. He actually came to the table third in chips, but finished in sixth place. It was his biggest poker score. So congratulations to him. And then to wrap things up, I know you are excited about this last one.
Elle
So we just got home from Arizona two months ago, and I'm. I'm sad about this, but I'm happy at the same time. They're getting a Buc EE's. They're about to get their first Buc EE's. And obviously, it's the best gas station on this continent. The.
Host Joe
Because that's what I was gonna say. Why
Elle
it's unusual for me to be speechless, but also this supportive of somewhat America. American commercialism and bigness. You know, like, I love Europe. Would be happy to have a home in Europe, to stay there multiple months out of the year. There's something about a slow culture and a smaller community that I just crave sometimes and less commercialism. But Buc ee's. I'm all in. I. I just can't get enough of it. The bathrooms are perfectly spotless. The people like working there. They pay them really well. The food is a huge selection. It's almost too much. It's really almost overwhelming. They have a shop. They have a place for your dog to do its business. They have a car wash usually. So, Anyways, I love Buc EE's, but I want to say congratulations to Arizona on your first one. But also, the reason we're mentioning it is it's wild. They've had to plan a traffic pattern for this opening. They have planned for something insane, like 50 to 60,000 people on the first day.
Host Joe
Yeah, like, it's a.
Elle
It's. It's a little bit nutty. It's almost a tourist attraction.
Host Joe
People are coming in midnight the night before it opens to sit and wait. To sit and wait.
Elle
I would do that. And I seriously would do that. We didn't do that on the one that opened two hours away from us. But I get it. It's one of those things I get.
Host Joe
I think if somebody would have told me, hey, we're going to open up this convenience store, and we're going to really sell it as having the cleanest bathrooms of any place you can stop, and I would have been like, okay, I don't know that that's your winning formula, but it has worked. This. It is one that they're opening In Arizona. Is 74,000 square feet with 120 gas pumps.
Elle
Yes.
Host Joe
And I don't think our grocery store is that big.
Elle
No, you just. You just gotta go. That's just for it. And I watched this for years. People who lived in Texas and all across the United States that had them, I was like, this is like, this cannot be real.
Host Joe
Right.
Elle
And it is. So I don't know that we're gonna get to see one before we had to out west again, because I don't. Well, we could hit it. We could hit the one on the way to Schenectady. So maybe September.
Host Joe
There is one on the way. Okay. Well, there you go.
Elle
I do. I do know where that one is.
Host Joe
I don't know. Does Florida have any.
Elle
I. I have to check.
Host Joe
So maybe we won't get to see one before we get on our boat. But our really big boat. Our really big boat. Obviously, we will be at sea next week. Next week, when Friday arrives, we will still be coming back into port.
Elle
Right. So we are taking a vacation. There will not be table talk next week. However, there will be a new hand of the week and a new call the floor, because our lovely peeps, Elliot and Patrick, agreed to record double this week so that you guys wouldn't miss out on that. So stay tuned. We love you guys. And I can't wait to tell you all the stories from poker at sea when we get back.
Host Joe
Exactly. As always, it's a pleasure being around the table with you.
Elle
Likewise.
Patrick
Elliot's wisdom cuts like a blade. Dropping true bombs with a poker parade. Big blinds, big stakes, raise it up. Let's make no mistake.
Host Joe
Elliot Schecter joins us each week to say how he would run situations that come up in your games. And he's with us again this week. Elliot, how's it going?
Joe
Things are going pretty well, thanks. How you doing today, Joe?
Host Joe
I'm doing all right. Running around trying to pick out our outfits and everything for the cruise. It's. It's complete insanity around here. We have things everywhere trying to get ready to go, I would say. But the show must go on. And we have a new call, the floor this week sent in by Dane Butler. And Dane Sundays there are four players left in a tournament, and he's heads up in a large pot. He bets on the river. And the other player turns around and says to friends on the. On his rail, what would you do here? He didn't show him his cards or anything like that. He just asked him the question. And someone from the Rail yells, I think he has it. The dealer stops the action and calls the floor immediately. The player insists he was joking and wasn't actually asking for advice. Even though I wasn't the one that stopped the action, I felt like the comment influenced the action and wanted a penalty assessed. The floor gave a warning in this case, but he asks, what penalties would Elliot give and why? And can the floor remove people from the rail
Joe
now? This is a pretty good discussion. I've had to deal with this before. Yeah, absolutely. It's explicitly in TDA rules and in most rule books that one player to a hand is a rule to be enforced and that includes solicitation of advice from players or non players alike. So his asking the question regardless of whether he shows his cards can easily be interpreted as soliciting advice, which you're not allowed to do.
Host Joe
Right.
Joe
It's just that simple. As for the player, as for the the railbird that spoke up and, and said I don't think he has it or I think he has it. Oh yeah, I think he has it. That's what he said.
Host Joe
Yeah.
Joe
I would have no hesitation to have that person removed from the gallery and sent off to a reasonable distance where he could not observe or participate in any way. And if that means leaving whatever room you're in, that's what's going to happen too. I've done that before and I'll continue to enforce the rules. Observation of a final table shall remain passive at all times unless somebody gets eliminated and starts shaking hands with everybody. And you can get in on that too, but otherwise keep your mouth shut.
Host Joe
Yeah, yeah.
Joe
So yeah, he's going, he's being sent off. As for the player who solicited the advice, a warning does count as a penalty. Again you, you gotta take all the context into account.
Host Joe
Right?
Joe
If this is a major tournament, I'm giving a major penalty. If it's a standard daily tournament, I'm probably going to be a little more merciful. He's trying to have fun and play it up for apparently no television cameras. So I'm not going to be incredibly merciful, but I'm not going to be unnecessarily harsh. I mean a one round penalty is four hands. That's still two big blinds and a small blind. It's a lot considering by the time you get to the last few players there's only so many big blinds in play. So penalizing somebody two and a half of them, it might be pretty severe. In that case, it doesn't mean it's not Warranted, but I don't know if it's specifically warranted in this case, but I would certainly consider having him sit out one or more hands. Even one hand is probably gonna get the message across. If that next hand's the big blind. Yeah, that's definitely gonna get the message across. But yeah, this is when you're playing for the television cameras and you're not on television, you're just wasting our time, just play cards. So. Yeah, and that's part of it too. That's all part of the context. I'm not inclined to show a lot of mercy here.
Host Joe
Right. I think it also kind of depends on the, the player themselves. Right. If they've been keeping the game moving, they've not really done anything wrong, then maybe a warning is enough to get his attention as well. If he's the type of player that's going to generally follow the rules. And this time he, he stepped out of bounds.
Joe
And I have found that players who generally follow the rules all of a sudden don't become showman in certain spots.
Host Joe
That's fair. That's fair. That is also fair. I, I also think that people have to understand this. To me feels the same as if somebody goes, I'm all in, just joking. You know, it's, it's, it's the same kind of when you say things, words, words matter, right?
Joe
Well, yeah, and absolutely.
Host Joe
Yeah. If you're saying something and, and maybe the people that are watching on the rail don't even know anything about poker, you know, and, and they're gonna respond in a way that is going to cause a problem. So, you know, I feel like this could be as big as somebody joking around in a way, like I was saying, you know, I was just joking.
Joe
And especially in it's their turn to act, they're either joking about being all in or they're joking about asking for advice. Either way, it's their turn to act. And that's their, that's their statement. It's basically accepted by tournament directors throughout the, the industry that we try not to determine whether you are joking or not. We're not there to rate how well you can act or perform stand up comedy. We're there to determine what is happening at that moment in time.
Host Joe
Right.
Joe
And that's it. So, yeah, words do matter. Watch what you say, be careful and don't do unreasonable things.
Host Joe
Yeah. Do you think that, that they were not harsh enough with a warning in this case?
Joe
I don't know. Probably not. I think a one hand penalty here, 25 of the. Of the round, I think, is a little more appropriate, maybe even more depending on the size of the tournament. But, yeah, this is an unnecessary waste of time, and it is absolutely a violation of a pretty important rule. One player to a hand is, again, foundational and is too important to ignore or to merely give a very mild slap on the wrist.
Host Joe
So there you go. It sounds like, you know, in this case, obviously, the whole situation, like you said, Elliot, the whole situation matters. But at best, he maybe should have had some kind of. Some kind of penalty above a warning. So I was hoping that you were able. You were going to say you were able to remove people from the rail. I assumed that was the case, but,
Joe
yeah, it's not a public park. It's private property. We get to determine who. Who gets to be present.
Host Joe
Yeah. Great discussion piece there, Dane. And I really appreciate you sending that in. If anyone has a call to floor that they would like to know how Elliot would rule, send it to podcastiotmagazine.com. elliot, we'll see you next week. Kind of. We got to record one before we get on the cruise ship, but. All right, we'll see you then.
Joe
Absolutely.
Host Joe
Welcome to Hand of the Week, where Patrick, our resident fish, and I dive into listen to submitted hands. Each week we tackle everything from questionable bluffs to hero calls and the hands that make you scratch your head. Whether you're looking for strategy tips or you just want to see if we would have played it any better, we've got you covered. Patrick. How's it going, man?
Patrick
You know what? I'm pretty good. Red Sox suck.
Joe
Yeah. So do the rocks.
Patrick
I still won the Patreon game, so I'm still. I'm still the current defending champ. Yeah. World cup started. That's cool. Yeah, Life's pretty good, my friend. You're cruising soon, though, right?
Host Joe
Yeah. So we're actually recording this a little bit early because by the time this is released, we will be on our way to Florida to jump on a plane or to jump on a ship. Let's. Let's plane, then ship, then. Yeah.
Patrick
So I think there's a song. It's. I'm on a boat. Everybody else is going to be on a boat. Joe's gonna be on a. On a flight, so good luck to everyone that's playing on a boat and not Joe, so. Well, that'll be fun. That'll be. That'll be very, very nice. I'm sure it'll be very well attended. So.
Host Joe
Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. It's gonna be a lot of fun. In the meantime, though, we do have a hand of the week, and it is sent in by Ed Harden. And Ed is playing one, three, no limit. All right, no limit. Hold. He's. Oh, he's got a hand in the cutoff with ace of spades. Queen of spades. He says he has about $425. A middle position player with around $350 opens to $12. He says he's been fairly active, but not crazy. All right,
Patrick
middle position. And he's got middle position, so we've got him covered. Right? You said 335 or something like that?
Joe
Yeah.
Patrick
Okay.
Host Joe
He doesn't say what anybody behind us has because we're in the cutoff.
Patrick
Yeah. Cut off.
Host Joe
Yeah, we're in the cutoff. So, you know, we still have three people to act after us.
Elle
Yeah.
Patrick
Ace of spades. Queen of spades. It's a very good hand. Not bad position. I. I wouldn't mind some more chips going into the pot. I think I'm just gonna call.
Host Joe
I was getting excited. I was like, oh, he's gonna raise. He's gonna raise. No, you let me down.
Patrick
Call. Give me some more chips. Let the small blind come in some more, you know, whoever.
Host Joe
Yeah, yeah. I'm definitely three betting.
Patrick
I know you are. You're going 1 30, ish. 36, 40, something like that.
Host Joe
Yeah, I mean, I'm thinking in the 35 to 45 range, so probably 35. I feel like we were in this exact same situation with this exact same hand not that long ago in hand of the week. Ace of spades, queen of spades. Might have been a different suit, but suited Ace, queen in the cutoff.
Patrick
Were we in the cutoff? I was thinking we were like. Were we cut off from under the gun? Maybe. I don't know. Maybe you're right.
Host Joe
I don't know. I don't know. But either way, I 3 bet then I'm 3 betting now.
Patrick
If nothing else, we're consistent.
Host Joe
That's right.
Patrick
By we, I mean you, because there are some days that I'm feeling froggy and I'm going 40 here. There's no consistency.
Host Joe
Yeah, I. I'm. I'm going 35. But would accept an answer anywhere between 35 and 45. I do not accept your. Your call. Ed decides to call as well. Damn it,
Patrick
Ed. The button calls my new best friend
Host Joe
the button.
Joe
Fold.
Host Joe
Yeah.
Patrick
Okay. The blinds fold. It would. I would have been. I. I would have felt vindicated if both of the small and Big blind would have got, came into. I would have felt vindicated.
Host Joe
I've been like, oh, see what you did? You let them all in.
Patrick
Let them in. We're going to be owning this hand anyways. Or at least you know, there's a possibility of it. But you're right. I see what you're getting at. I, I do.
Joe
You're not wrong. Just.
Host Joe
There is $40 in the pot. And the flop comes the queen of diamonds, nine of clubs, six of spades. The original razor bets $20.
Patrick
Now it's time to three bet.
Host Joe
Oh, now you want to wake up.
Patrick
Look, here's the deal. So we got 40 in the pot. You, you would have gotten. Let me, I'm going to go on record. Everyone stop and listen for a second. I'm going on record. Joe was right. He would have gotten more in the pot, more than likely. Let's say you went 35. Right button. May or may not call. They're probably, maybe fold, maybe not. Whatever middle position probably calls. So you would have had more of the pot then I'm going on record. So my plan failed now. So what did you say it was? What was what? Mid middle position bet 20.
Host Joe
$20.
Patrick
Yeah, I'm going, I'm going 60 at a minimum.
Host Joe
We have, we have completely flip flopped on this because one, I think middle position is going to c. Bet pretty wide here. So he's going to be doing this with just about anything.
Patrick
Yep.
Host Joe
And I, I originally I was thinking about raising here, but with a player left to act after us, I feel like that can get us into some tough spots. So I just want to call. So we called and now we're going to call again.
Patrick
Okay.
Host Joe
Even though it's not the line that I was originally going to take, but playing as we, we got here with just a call. So that's what I'm going to do here. Just call.
Patrick
Okay.
Host Joe
Ed also calls. So you guys, you guys have split ways here. And the button folds. So that's good. At least we're heading up now, right?
Patrick
Yeah. Now your head's up with what, 80 in the pot?
Host Joe
Yep. Ed calls. And the button folds. The turn is the eight of spades. So we have top pair, top kicker. Now we have the nut flush draw. The board is queen of diamonds, nine of clubs, six of spades, eight of spades. And our opponent leads into us again for 55.
Patrick
Do you make them on 7? 10. Do you make them on 10? Jack?
Host Joe
Maybe, maybe.
Patrick
I still feel pretty good. He leans into us for what, 55.
Host Joe
Okay, I can't drive 55.
Patrick
Assume it. No, neither can I, assuming we're playing Ed's hands and we've called until now. Now can we lean back and see what's what and get some answers? Beautiful, man. I'm glad to hear that. All right, so 55. I'm going, I'm going 125.
Host Joe
Okay. That's a little less than I was going to go. I was going to go all the way up to 200. I was going to get some real answers. You were going to get.
Patrick
You. You were going to find out what's what real quick. All right, let's meet in the middle somewhere like 151. No, 160 and change. Okay. All right. I like that.
Host Joe
Yeah. Our top pair, top kicker turned into a nut flush draw. So we've got outs even if we're behind. If they have sets or two pair or whatever. Yeah, I want to put them to the test. Ed says at this point I start thinking he could have hands like queen, jack, queen, 10, pocket jacks, pocket tens, maybe even ace, king. Are we worried about any of those hands? Queen, Jack, Queen, 10. No pocket Jacks, no pocket 10.
Patrick
No, I'm worried about 10, Jack,
Host Joe
Ace, King. I'm not worried about. He says I also have a lot of equity if I'm behind. So I raise to 150. So he did go back. There you go.
Patrick
Just close enough to the middle.
Host Joe
He tanks for a bit and then calls. Okay, the river is the seven of hearts. So the board now reads queen of diamonds, nine of clubs, six of spades, eight of spades, seven of hearts.
Patrick
Let me guess. Middle position checks.
Host Joe
Middle position shoves all in for $163.
Patrick
Wow.
Host Joe
So he says, now I'm completely lost. The straight gets there. Missed flush draw. Some two pair hands are possible. But I also wonder if he can be turning something like aces, kings, or even queen jack into a bluff. Because my turn. Raise. Looks strong.
Patrick
He could be, but we got top pair and top kicker. But there's a lot of straight possibilities on that board. Yeah, I don't mind laying this one down.
Host Joe
Yeah. Here's the thing. It's. It's not even any two pair combinations that he needs now or two card combinations that he needs now. He needs a single 10. Yeah, that's it.
Patrick
King, 10, Queen, 10, Jack, 10. All get there.
Host Joe
Yeah. Any, any, any 10 at all he can have. He could have the Doyle Brunson and have 10, deuce, and he'd still be good.
Patrick
Right now, I've played That a few times.
Host Joe
No one doubts that. No.
Patrick
No one doubts you fold three or four hands in a row, you get ten deuce off suit. You're, you know, you're sitting on the button. Well, you know, why not see a flop?
Host Joe
Meanwhile, somebody else just shoved. And you're like, yeah, sure,
Patrick
Joe. Joe, you and I still have work to do.
Host Joe
Yeah, But at least we agree here, right? We're folding.
Patrick
Yeah, we're folding. Yep.
Host Joe
Ed says after a long tank, I finally call. And they table the 10 of spades, 10 of diamonds. They had. Actually, they had pocket tens for the river drink. Yeah.
Patrick
Yeah.
Host Joe
He has questions. Should I have 3 bet pre flop instead of flatting? Ace, queen, suited. Absolutely.
Elle
Yeah.
Patrick
He's not wrong there, Ed. He's probably right. But you know what, Joe? Explain that one. So if you do. If I'm sitting on tens, I'm still calling.
Host Joe
Yeah, but your story changes through the rest of the hand, right? It's not just about. This is the thing that we have to get through your head, Patrick. It's not about one Street. It's about the story that you tell throughout the whole hand. And that story is different. If we three bet. And the flop comes out. Queen, nine, six, and we bet now, they have to be putting us on a strong hand, right? Aces, kings, queens, even.
Joe
Yeah.
Host Joe
Ace, king, ace, queen.
Patrick
So your thought is we're telling the story enough that we don't ever get to the river, right?
Host Joe
Yeah. Once that turn comes out, now they've got a gutter. They just need this. The jack or the seven, that becomes tougher. So we have to get them to fold on that flop.
Patrick
Yeah,
Host Joe
but I honestly. Saying that out loud, I honestly think that the turn bet should have got him to fold. I think that that turn bet, it's a bad call on our opponent's part to call our turn. $150 raise. Maybe they don't. If we would have. If he would have gone a little higher to, like our 200, maybe he folds. But
Patrick
because at that point he. He has to have. Oh, no, he's got two outs. He could. A jack or seven. I was gonna say he's only got one.
Host Joe
It's more than two outs, but. Yes.
Patrick
Yep, you're right. Seeing. Look, if. If you could only see my side, my head. What I'm thinking is right, what I say is wrong. That should be a shirt. What I think is right, what I say is wrong.
Host Joe
I'm. I'm getting you that shirt for 100%.
Patrick
I'm getting you that shirt Pat patent pending on that one. That could be for a lot of different things in life. Yeah, you're right, though. I mean, that's. Yeah, I tell the story. We talk about it all the time.
Host Joe
Yeah. Which leads us to question number two. I didn't even realize, is the turn raise good because of the additional equity or am I just bloating the pot with one pair? The turn raise is good.
Patrick
It is good. It could even be higher. Again. We probably don't. Well, you might catch a fold if you go higher, closer to what you were thinking. But again, you haven't quite told any story leading up to that, so, you know, maybe you don't catch a fold.
Host Joe
I think I. Which I just alluded to earlier. I think that that turn call by them was pretty bad. It commits them in an awkward spot when all they're really just hoping for a jack or a seven. And I mean, they got lucky on the river. So.
Patrick
Yeah, I think. I mean, if they. If I'm. If I'm the opponent, if I don't get a jack, a seven or a ten and get my set, then I'm folding. That's a lot of money to be putting in just for.
Joe
For that.
Patrick
But, I mean, there's a lot of out.
Host Joe
I mean, if you get your 10, that's pretty scary too, though, because if you have 10, 98 and then the 6 out there, the queen is out there. So that's. That's a scary.
Patrick
Takes you down in a lot of way. Yeah.
Host Joe
Yeah. His last question is, does his river shove represent enough bluffs at 13 to justify a crying call? And I don't think. I think you're thinking about it right at 1 3. No, I don't think there are enough bluffs to justify the call. I feel like that one was all over the place, but, yeah, we definitely were, too. But yeah, that. That's. That's a tough one. He got lucky on the river. I think the turn call, the turn raised there was. Was spot on. And the big mistake, to me, in my opinion, the big mistake is, is
Patrick
pre flop.
Host Joe
We should have three bet pre flop.
Patrick
But, yep, look, I'm a big enough man. I'll admit when I'm wrong. Think you're right on that one.
Host Joe
He just says, oh, he love the show. Look forward to hearing what you guys think. Yeah. Thank you for sending that in, Ed. And if anyone has a hand of the week that they would like to know how Patrick and I would play it, send it to podcasting magazine dot com. Patrick. We'll see you next week. I will actually be on a cruise already, but we'll get a hand. We'll get a hand out to everybody.
Patrick
Sounds like a plan. Wear your sunscreen.
Host Joe
I will. I will too. From the flops to the turn, we
Patrick
play it old, chasing hearts and diamonds.
Elle
Never fold in the boots.
Patrick
We're dealing stories that clean poker legends rise on the 18th.
Host Joe
As we get ready to go poker cruising. And actually, by the time you you hear this, we'll be well on our way to poker cruising at the end of hand of the week. You heard Patrick offer some very practical advice, which is wear sunscreen. Maybe I'm showing my age, but the. The second he said that, my mind immediately went back to the Baz Luhrmann song. And I wish I could remember what it's called, but it's either. It's either wear sunscreen or class of 99. I never can remember which, but it started me thinking. Man, I've played poker for years. I've traveled to tournaments, hosted this podcast, met so many of the everyday poker players. So if I could offer poker players a few pieces of advice like that song does, what would they be? So, with apologies to Boss Luhrmann, ladies and gentlemen of the poker world, if I could offer you only one piece of poker advice for the future, it would be this. Protect your hand. The long term benefits of protecting your hand have been proven by countless floor rulings. While the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than years spent watching people make the same mistakes over and over again, I will dispense this advice now. Respect the dealers. You may not realize how much they contribute to your experience until you play in a game without good ones. Trust me. Enjoy the thrill of a deep run. One day you'll look back and realize the trophies were nice, but the stories were better. Don't worry too much about bad beats or worry. But know that worrying about bad beats is about as effective as trying to improve your poker skills by yelling at the river card. The real disasters in poker aren't usually the hands you lose. They're the opportunities you never took. Play one tournament every year that scares you. Move up occasionally. Take a shot not because you're guaranteed to win, but because you'll learn something. Don't be reckless with other people's bankrolls. Don't be reckless with your own. Tip your dealers. The race is not against the player in seat four or seat seven, or even the guy with six bracelets. The race is long, and in the end it's only against the player you were yesterday. Remember the hands you played well. Forget the results. If you can figure out how to do that consistently, please tell the rest of us. Take pictures with your friends. Save your tournament receipts. Throw away your bad beat stories after the third retelling. Nobody enjoys them as much as you do. Learn a mixed game. Listen when something feels wrong. Listen when something feels right. Your instincts won't always be correct, but ignoring them ensures that they never improve. Be kind to the new players. Today's beginner may be tomorrow's champion. And besides, poker needs new players far more than it needs another expert. Travel when you can play in rooms you've never seen. Some of your favorite poker memories won't happen at the final table. They'll happen at 2am in a diner, after busting out. Understand? Table Image Everyone has one. The smart players learn how to use it. The best players learn how to change it. The cards matter, but what people think about your cards matters too. Don't chase every loss. Don't celebrate your wins too hard either. Neither lasts as long as you think. And whether you're playing a $60 nightly, a cruise tournament or the main event, remember this. The chips are temporary. The friendships are not. So shake hands, buy a round, thank the staff, laugh when you can. And be careful whose advice you take. But be patient with those who supply it. But trust me on this one. Protect your hand. That's today's one. Outer that's today's show. I'll see you next week. A team. And until then, I'll see you at the tables.

Well, that's cool.
Elle
No, you don't understand.
Patrick
It went perfectly. Real offer, down to the penny. They're picking it up tomorrow. Nothing went wrong.
Host Joe
So what's the problem?
Patrick
That is the problem. Nothing in my life goes as smoothly. I'm waiting for the catch.
Host Joe
Maybe there's no catch.
Patrick
That's exactly what a catch would want me to think.
Joe
Wow.
Host Joe
You need to relax.
Patrick
I need to knock on wood. Do we have wood? Is this table wood?
Elle
I think it's laminate.
Patrick
Okay. Yeah, that's good. That's close enough.
