Hello. Hello, and welcome, everybody, to the arnet podcast. I am sitting here with a young lady that I actually watched grow up from when she was a small child. Her parents are very dear friends of mine, Absolutely love them. And let me introduce you to Dr. Alexis Yarborough.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Hello, Doc.
David Bratton
How are you?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Good. How are you?
David Bratton
I'm doing well. Doing well. So you just opened your new business, Right?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Right.
David Bratton
This is Cabot Chiropractic. Chiropractic and wellness clinic. Okay. Very nice. I mean, is it nice office you have here? How long have you been in business?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
About two months now. It's pretty scary, I bet.
David Bratton
I bet. Now, you worked in Missouri before coming here, correct?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Yes.
David Bratton
I gotcha.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Yeah, I had to get my toes wet. Get some experience out there.
David Bratton
Sure, sure. Now, you went to. Where'd you go to school? Tell me about your. Your schooling.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Okay, so I went to Logan University. It's in Chesterfield, Missouri, right outside St. Louis. It was a great time. I would never do it again. It was horrible, actually. It's a lot of schooling and a lot of classes. Felt like all I did was study. I never had time to do anything. But I learned a lot, a lot more than I think I did, because when I hear things from patients, I start to connect the dots, and then my nerd brain goes crazy. Then I'm like, oh, wait, this makes so much sense.
David Bratton
There you go. Awesome. Well, let's. Let's go back to the beginnings. Take us back to what sparked your interest in becoming a chiropractor.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Well, you know, Tim, my dad, he's always had back problems, and he said that I was always meant to do something like this because when I was little, he would always lay on the floor, and then I would always crack his back, and nobody else could. I was the only one. So that kind of sparked my interest. I always wanted to be in healthcare. I was in school during COVID I was actually gonna go another route, but then I would be held back. So I kind of went out on a limb. I was interested in it. I had a few friends who were already doctors, chiropractors, and so I just did it. And I said, if it's meant to be, I'll be good at it. And I am. So here we are.
David Bratton
Well, very good. Now the Other route.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
What.
David Bratton
What was your first route you were going to take?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
I was going to do optometry school. I was going to look at eyeballs.
David Bratton
Oh, nice.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
And then I took anatomy. I did cadaver labs in Cairo School. And then I realized I. Yeah, that's just not my thing.
David Bratton
Yeah. Yeah. So you decided to do the chiropractic medicine.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Yeah.
David Bratton
Okay. Now, you graduated top of your class at Logan University, is that correct?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
I did.
David Bratton
What's the biggest lesson you learned from chiropractic school?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
I learned patient care to the best of my ability. How to take care of all kinds of different cases, like from kids to older adults. So I really liked pediatrics. It was fun. Yeah.
David Bratton
So is that chiropractic? Practicing chiropractic medicine on pediatrics?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Yes. It's really good for a baby, especially if they're colic or they have torticollis. They come in, they always say they're like little worms because they're just super flimsy, and they're just, like, so small, and you can just hold them. They cry, which is scary, but it's actually really helping them. I took care of a few babies when I was in Missouri, and I had great outcomes.
David Bratton
Oh, nice. Okay. Before opening your own business here in Cabot, you worked in Missouri, like we already discussed. What did that experience teach you about patient care and getting you prepared to run your own practice?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Oh, that's a good question.
David Bratton
So, yeah, I used to interview interrogations at the police department.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Yeah, I know, it's scary. I learned what I liked and what I didn't like, which is why I decided to go out on my own when I came back home instead of working for somebody else. I definitely played around with different kinds of treatments when it came to, like, neck pain or headaches or low back pain. So I feel like I can take different avenues now that I've had the experience, especially in Missouri.
David Bratton
You made the decision to come back to Cabot. What made you want to come back home?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
I missed my family, and I felt like I would always come back at some point. My goal when I first graduated from school was to come back home, but then I didn't. I should have, but, yeah, I wanted to learn from other places before trying to go out on my own.
David Bratton
Sure. Okay. Now you focus on treating the root cause instead of just the symptoms. Can you break down what it actually looks like to be a patient?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Like, from the beginning, from the start?
David Bratton
Yeah. Yeah. If I come in here as a new patient and say I've got lower back Pain.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Okay.
David Bratton
How are you gonna treat me?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Well, I would have to do an exam on you first and see how long you've had back pain. Because most people try to ignore their pain and go as long as they can without having to go to a doctor. Right. So I would do that. I also look at your past history, like, what you've done. If, like, you've had, like, traumatic injuries which could be causing your low back pain. Now it's just over time, it's gotten worse. I also use therap. I have a roller bed right now, and I have electrical stem. I have the cupping and I have the scraping for the low back. That's most people's problem because we're loading our backs all the time, like sitting at a desk. So I always do stem if needed for the low back just because it's always tight. That'll help me loosen it. I'll get you adjusted. Usually that's first day, and then after that I'll give you some stretches, and then if needed. Acupuncture is also really good for low back pain.
David Bratton
No kidding?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Yeah, just to relieve the tension in the muscles.
David Bratton
Okay, gotcha. So you offer acupuncture, cupping, electrotherapy. How do you decide who gets what? Give an example of somebody that needs acupuncture.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
So if this electrical stimulation or the roller bed is, like, if you're staying at a constant flat line, like you hit a plateau, basically in your treatment, I would try the acupuncture and see if it would help you get past that. And then if you're better, then I can drop you off on treatments too, because then we kind of figured out what's best for you.
David Bratton
Okay. Why would somebody want cupping? What does cupping do other than put those little circle bruises on you?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Well, it helps bring, like, the blood to the surface of your skin. It kind of looks scary because you bruise pretty bad, or you can bruise pretty bad, but it helps, like, reduce the inflammation.
David Bratton
Okay, interesting. Yeah. I've seen on TV different celebrities or whatever. You know, you'll see them and they have those little circles on them. Yeah, you're like, oh, that's cuffing.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Yeah. It definitely helps with soreness or tightness. It's good for recovery after exercise. It increases the blood flow to the area.
David Bratton
Okay. Now, I know your dad well. Both your parents work out quite a bit.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Oh, every day, right?
David Bratton
Yeah. They're always in the gym.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Yes. Good for. You know what I always say, Motion is lotion. It's always good to have physical activity and exercise every day. Right.
David Bratton
Yes. What are the misconceptions about chiropractic care? What's something people often get wrong?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
That we can cause strokes.
David Bratton
Really? I've never heard.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Yeah. From adjusting your neck. People say that we can cause strokes, but statistically, if you look at it, they're actually freak accidents. It's like one in. I don't remember the stats. It's like one in.
David Bratton
Sure.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
One in a. I don't even know. It's like, the chances are so low of that happening. I mean, it has happened, and it's been freak accidents, but it's just not. You have, like. You have a better chance of getting a stroke eating a burger or something. I don't.
David Bratton
Yeah, yeah. No, I've never heard of. Of chiropractic. Chiropractic medicine causing a stroke. It's something new. Interesting. Okay, what are some common issues you're seeing in your patients right now?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
A lot of text neck and a lot of low back pain, which is the two most common that you're gonna see in a chiropractic office, especially with, like, the new generation. They're always looking at their phone or they're always looking at their iPad, so they're always down like this, which can cause a reverse curve in their neck. I am one of those people. So, yeah, unfortunately, because I am on my phone, I don't have the best posture, which is terrible. But I'm honest. I know I. I need to work
David Bratton
on it right now. I've seen some stuff, you know, on YouTube and stuff where these chiropractors put something around somebody's neck and.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Oh, like the Y strap.
David Bratton
Stretch them out. Do y'. All. Do you do that?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
I mean, I don't do the Y strap, but I can't. Like, I do a full form of it. I just kind of pull a little bit, but not too much.
David Bratton
Okay.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Yeah, kind of. Like I said, I'd like to try
David Bratton
that out and get a good crack. You know, something about watching those videos, people getting cracked.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
It's so satisfying.
David Bratton
It is satisfying. It's hilarious. All right. Being a bit a new business owner, what's your biggest challenge in business?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Everything. Basically, just getting the word out there that I am here now.
David Bratton
Yes.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
I am 27, so I feel like I'm just now starting in life, so I've had to do and figure out a lot of curves on what I need to do. Like, I've worked for a few other chiropractors, and I've learned from them, but not necessarily the business side. So it's been a learning curve.
David Bratton
Oh, I bet. I bet. How do you balance, you know, being a doctor and then the responsibilities are on your business?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Oh, that's such a good question. You know, I'll be honest. I'm not that great at balancing. I feel like I'm always stressed about when it comes to business.
David Bratton
Welcome to the world of being an entrepreneur.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Oh, gosh. I know. I just. Oh, it's killing me every day. But, no, I. That's where I. I guess I can struggle sometimes because when it comes to patient care, I want what's best for my patient.
David Bratton
Sure.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Like, there's just certain things, morals and ethics, when it comes down to it. Like, I'm gonna send somebody out if I'm not gonna be able to help them if I know I'm not. Especially on the first day.
David Bratton
Is that something you can tell right away?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Usually, yeah. Especially if it's based off, like, their history. If they've been to other chiropractors, they've had no relief, and then they've had X rays, and it's just nothing. And if nothing's helping, I'm gonna, like. I'm not gonna waste either of our time. I'm just gonna refer you out, because at the end of the day, it's about them. It's not about me. It's not about my business. It's about what's best for them.
David Bratton
Absolutely. What does success look like to you in next couple of years? What impact do you want to have on the. On the community here in Cabot?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Well, in the next few years, I would love to expand. I worked in a clinic that was integrated. That's something that I'm interested in doing. So that's a goal of mine.
David Bratton
Now, when you say integrated, that. What does that mean?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
So I am very interested in dipping my toes again in regenerative medicine. And that's where you do. Like, the PRP injections. So in substitute of, like getting a steroid in your shoulder for your joint or in your knee, you can do. You can take your own blood, and you spin it, and then you put it in your joint.
David Bratton
Oh, wow. Okay. That's interesting. I have not heard of that either,
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
because over time, steroids break you down. You degenerate faster with steroids.
David Bratton
Yeah. Interesting. Very good. Okay. Well, Doc, where are you located at? What's the address here?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
723 S. 2nd St, Unit A, right next to Domino's.
David Bratton
Oh, yeah. Everybody knows where Domino's.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Oh, yeah, I do, too. I go there a lot sometimes on my lunch.
David Bratton
Oh, sure. Well, it's easy. Easy walk for you.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
I know. It takes me like two seconds.
David Bratton
Absolutely. Other than that, what's your social media presence?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
I'm on Facebook. I am going to start doing tik tok. I did tik toks at my old job.
David Bratton
There you go.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
So we're. We're getting there. I got the mic and everything.
David Bratton
Okay. Now, how do people find you on the Facebook?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Well, I just joined the chamber, so they've been posting me, I've been reposting on mine. I've had my friends come in and also repost my post, and then they take some business cards and give them to others.
David Bratton
Gotcha. What's your Facebook handle? Your business?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Cathedral Chiropractic and Wellness Clinic, llc.
David Bratton
Okay, so Cabot Chiropractic and Wellness Clinic, llc. Yeah. On Facebook.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough

Dr. Alexis Yarborough
I know.
David Bratton
You know, your parents and I, we'd made a pact that we were going to have dinner at least once a quarter. I think we did it one time. So we're down about once a year now.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
I guess life ahead of you.
David Bratton
Life does happen.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
I know. It's crazy. I didn't. I feel like I just graduated high school and I graduated high school in 2017. Right.
David Bratton
Oh, wow. It's almost 10 years ago.
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
Oh, God. I know. It's sickening.
David Bratton
Well, I graduated in 87. All right, well. Well, Doc, is there anything we've left out?
Dr. Alexis Yarborough
I don't think so, but I would love for everyone to come see me.
