Armstrong
I've been watching for two hours. You gotta score a goal. It's one more thing. Armstrong and Getty. One more thing. Oddly enough, I didn't feel that way. I don't know.
Tony Ayo
I don't know.
Armstrong
I guess I learned enough about socce. I got caught up in World cup fever or something like that. After a lifetime of mocking soccer and people who watch it, I got into the World cup this year and like I was. I wasn't sitting there watching it, but I had it on in the background the entire time, the World cup final, and thought it was very exciting. I thought the fact that it was 00 going into extra time was exciting. I wasn't thinking it was dull.
Getty
It's funny how we've crossed paths or, you know, taken opposite sides on this because I've watched soccer for years and years. Years and World cup finals make me insane. Because they're so conservative. I find them boring. It's like Watching, you know, basketball in the four core, what they call it, the four corners era, where they would just, you know, get the ball and play keep away to run out the clock. And that's why they instituted the shot clock and stuff like that. But, you know, obviously the world disagrees with me.
Armstrong
Yeah, we don't need to get into the X's and O's of soccer, I suppose, either like it or you don't. But the World cup final in the United States was a really, really big deal. And when they were talking about, you know, a billion people around the world watching, I think that's actually true, as opposed to when they say that for the Super Bowl. I've always wondered, is anybody anywhere else in the world give a crap about this? Like how many places in the world. I was thinking about this. We're about to hear from Todd Cru, Tom Cruise. After I heard Tom Cruise talk about a billion people around the world, I thought, yeah, I mean, practically every high school in the world probably has a soccer team. How many high schools. Are there any high schools in Spain where anybody plays our version of football with pads and helmets and kick oblong balls up? Is there one in the whole. I'll bet there's not. I'll bet there's not one high school football team. Is there one in Europe?
Getty
I don't even know. There are. There are, but they're very, very few. And they're a novelty. It's generally an American expat organizes it and the kids like playing and. And it gets written up in the New York Times. Scandinavians playing American football. It's a novelty.
Armstrong
Basketball's definitely grown as a sport, which can be proven by the fact that we lost the gold medal a bunch of times in a row in the Olympics. So basketball is caught around the world, but soccer's everywhere for whatever reason. And it was in the United States yesterday and they made it. They. It was like the super bowl in the way they. The way they handled it on the television. I always feel guilty playing part of a national anthem. Like I've done something sacrilegious. But let's hear a little of Jennifer Hudson singing the national anthem yesterday. What? So proudly. So I heard good reviews of her version of the national anthem.
Tom Cruise
She's no.
Armstrong
Ruben stuttered. Who is. Who beat her, I think on American
Getty
idol that year, 50 years ago, and nobody's ever heard of it was on for a minute and 56 seconds. It's very good, though.
Armstrong
She did the two minute version. Yeah, man. For some reason. Why Was I doing this the other day? I have no idea why. I think I played it for one of my kids. The Whitney Houston national anthem. The first national anthem after 9, 11. Oh, my God. Mm. That was something else.
Getty
Jennifer Hudson is an amazing vocalist. She is just. You know, some people's sinuses and throats are shaped in such a way that it makes a pleasing noise when they sing. The rest of us, not so much. But what are you gonna do?
Armstrong
Here's a little Tom Cruise who did the voiceover for the pre game.
Tom Cruise
More than 30 days ago, 48 nations began a journey. They crossed o. They crossed borders. They crossed cultures. And together they showed us why this game belongs to the world.
Getty
All right, it's a soccer tournament. Take it easy.
Armstrong
The game on planes probably flew first class. It's not like they were in boats, rowing or something. Anyway, this is the part.
Getty
The strings. Too many strings.
Armstrong
This is the part I wanted to hear from Tom Cruise.
Tom Cruise
But these stories, now, these stories belong to each and every one of us.
Tony Ayo
Do they?
Tom Cruise
To every nation, to every player, to every supporter, to every volunteer.
Getty
What does that even mean?
Tom Cruise
To every dream carried on the pitch. So as we gather for one final chapter, Let us celebrate a tournament that brought the world together. Let us celebrate each other. This is football. This is unity.
Armstrong
So I thought this.
Tom Cruise
This is great.
Armstrong
Stop dyeing your hair. I thought that was interesting, him calling it football because the most popular sport, the most popular TV show, the most popular, really, anything in the United States is football. But we don't mean that sport. So calling it. Calling something else football seems pretty crazy.
Getty
I wish we had that chunk of Nate Bargazzi's great bit right now. Ready to go. We'll play a game called football. This game will be played with the feet a little bit.
Armstrong
There's a little kicking. How much is it worth? Sometimes three, sometimes one, but I don't know. Yeah, I don't know if we're going to. We probably ought to. What ought to happen is we ought to rename our sport because calling it football is kind of dumb since it's almost entirely, especially now a passing game.
Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis)
Yeah.
Armstrong
And there is a sport called football. It's the most popular sport on the planet.
Getty
Yeah, but do we want to call it. Everybody else calls it American football, but we know that because we're here. So, yeah, what do we call.
Armstrong
Actually, how about you change the name of your sport or we'll bomb you back to the stone age.
Getty
Oh, for God's sake. That is. I do not. I disassociate myself or terrible 100 tariff. Anybody who calls it football, my God, till the courts overturn it.
Armstrong
Yeah, soccer is a perfectly good name
Getty
pass and running blockathon.
Armstrong
Where did soccer come from? Did we make up the term soccer because they all call it football. I don't know.
Getty
So that's, you know, that's a good question. I mean, the Brits invented soccer and they called it football, right?
Armstrong
Yeah.
Getty
Oh, that is some seriously bad thumb writing you're typing. I'll get you an answer.
Armstrong
Okay, so give me this ABC report on the halftime from Sophie Flay.
Orderly Meds Advertiser
Many online criticized the game as boring. And some reviews at the halftime show weren't much kinder. The show star studded with Madonna, Shakira, Chris Martin and even the Muppets performing.
Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis)
All right, young man, let's go. It's your big shot.
Orderly Meds Advertiser
Jason Sudeikis appeared in character as Ted Lasso, introducing Justin Bieber. Some calling the mixer performances and appearances bizarre and disjointed.
Armstrong
First of all, it's the worst kind of journalism that exists on earth. We've been complaining about a long time, grabbing a couple of social media posts and building a story around it. Some people said this.
Getty
She should have her freedom of speech taken away.
Armstrong
Congratulations to the World cup final. You have risen to the level of the super bowl where everybody complains about your halftime show. That's a sign of success, it would seem, right, since that's what we do in America with our version of football every single year. No matter what you put out, everybody complains about it.
Getty
You know, my question would be, can we all take a step back and think about this? Number one, nobody's ever happy with it. So number one, why do you act surprised that you're not happy with it? Number two, what are we doing here? What is this exercise again? I've called for this for ages. A marching band or a boxing match or a hockey game or something. Just anything but pop stars of the moment.
Armstrong
Who wants the feats of strength? This is not a pop star of the moment. This is a pop star of the moments 40 years ago. Let's hear a little of Madonna.
Getty
There's not a 1% chance she is
Armstrong
singing that and she is dressed like a.
Getty
Look at the elderly lip syncing, kids.
Armstrong
Why is that elderly's lips not matching up with the music?
Getty
Don't worry about it, son. Just enjoy.
Armstrong
She was dressed in like a. Madonna is not a. In case that matters to anyone, she's a brilliant businesswoman.
Tom Cruise
She is.
Armstrong
But when you're getting free medical care from the government because you qualify it by age. You should no longer wear thigh highs in public. In the bedroom with your husband, fine. But in public, trying to be sexy. You have been eclipsed by people. Well, a long time ago. It's just. It's just weird. It's weird.
Getty
Yes.
Armstrong
Give up the sex symbol thing. You can still go out and sing and everything, but don't, don't, don't be a sex symbol. It's weird. I didn't actually see the Ted Lasso thing with Justin Bieber. We'll give you a little of that.
Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis)
Coach, I gotta say, the first half of halftime knocked my darn socks off.
Armstrong
Spectacular, baby.
Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis)
I mean, how the heck they want. Going to be able to fall down.
Armstrong
Going to be tough.
Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis)
Yep. Yeah. You know what I think we need? We need some heart, you know, someone that has some soul. You know, someone who can bring the love. You thinking what I'm thinking?
Armstrong
One step ahead of you, coach.
Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis)
You always are. All right, young man, let's go. It's your big shot. Okay, now listen to me. Go out there. Don't be nervous. Nobody's watching. All right? Make us proud.
Armstrong
And then he starts singing. So that's Justin Bieber. I didn't realize that was Justin Bieber. I caught part of that. And I was just saying to my son, because he's plays guitar and front of crowds and stuff like that. He has. And I said, man, that'd be something. Standing in the middle because did you see any of it? It's a Bieber and an acoustic guitar period. In the middle of the field, surrounded just by himself. And that's a heck of a thing because that place was 180,000 people or how many people in there in the middle of the field by yourself with acoustic guitar, I would not be able to get my hands to work, you know, Sure. I couldn't get my fingers to function.
Getty
I'm finding myself wondering, would I be more nervous?
Armstrong
That's the interesting thing I said to
Getty
my kids about or less than. If I'm in a little place and there are four people staring at me
Armstrong
that I told my kids that a very same thing. I said, you know, my experience, though, actually is playing music or speaking. The giant crowds are way easier because you can't focus on the individual bored or angry person.
Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis)
Right.
Armstrong
But I've played, like in bars where there's 20 people and you can, like, hear their individual size. Yeah, it's way harder.
Getty
Famously. One band I was in, Gladys. This would have been 1988. Anyway, heavy rock Band. We played a bunch of covers and a few originals and we played our first tune at this bar. It was like early, early in the evening, first set. Play our first tune and hear this gals voice ring out.
Armstrong
Well, they got nerve anyway.
Getty
I'll never forget that chick. Enter tone of voice. Oh boy. But the great Joni Mitchell once said, the easiest relationship in the world is 10,000 people.
Armstrong
Yeah.
Getty
One is the hardest.
Armstrong
Yeah. And if you ever, if you've ever done public speaking, it's. It's similar. You staying up in front of a 7,000 people or whatever is way easier than like a dozen people. Oh my worst playing music was. I think it was an open night Night Mike open. No, it was not open night Mike.
Getty
He really left a lasting impression on you. It was brief and torrid.
Armstrong
I was so drunk. It was not. It was with a. Now I'm picturing it. But anyway, we're playing a set and like three or four songs in it. And I had written all these songs so it particularly made me angry that somebody said, is every song you do in G? And I thought, and, and I just thought it was hard to ignore because like what kind of a criticism is that?
Getty
It's a key I'm comfortable singing in.
Armstrong
Or it just happened right now we've done four in a row. That they aren't all. What? Why does it matter?
Getty
What are you, some sort of key
Armstrong
of B flat activist? It's funny, I could hardly concentrate to do the next song because it's like,
Getty
what if it had been I hate your songs? You'd think, well, some love them, some hate em. Okay, but that, that's a. Wait, wait a minute, wait a minute. The hell do you care?
Armstrong
Exactly.

Made me want to stop the song and move the capo up a fret.
Getty
There. You happy? That's such a funny criticism.
Armstrong
I know.
Getty
So look, I see the next clip in the line.
Armstrong
I was actually gonna skip that. We can do it if you want.
Getty
I was gonna say it's Shakira performing. You could play Shakira or half a dozen other rhythmic pop princesses through the years, and I would never have any idea. And I would have no opinion having played it.
Armstrong
Yeah, I was gonna skip that. I think we've probably done enough of the halftime show and let's just get to the how the whole thing ended after 125 minutes. That's a long time. No scoring for most of that.
Getty
Hooks it in.
Armstrong
Williams battling, knocks it down.
Tom Cruise
It's free. It's a goal.
Armstrong
Will that be the goal that wins
Getty
Spain their second World cup title?
Tom Cruise
Spain, for the second time in their history, have won the World Cup. It
Armstrong
0, 0. But that was not an indication of how the game was going. There were 16 shots on goal by Spain, and that number was. Let me look at this. 0 by Argentina. 0. They didn't get one kick at the goalie. And all that time. It's amazing.
Getty
It was ridiculous. I was so discouraged. I was rooting for Argentina, too. And I was just so, just discouraged watching it. Oh, for God's sake, would you guys do something?
Armstrong
I almost bought an Argentina jersey to wear around for a couple of days before this match. That would have been my dumbest jump on a bandwagon sports purchase of all time. And I've made some dumb ones.
Getty
Well, if you did bust it out of the closet, people would speak Spanish to you because they could only assume that you're an Argentine. Why else would you be wearing it?
Armstrong
I saw lots of people over the weekend in jerseys. Lots of people in either. In various jerseys. I saw a couple yesterday coming out of the Target. They Were holding hands. I assume boyfriend and girlfriend. The dude was in a Spain jersey and she was in an Argentina jersey. I thought that was cool.
Getty
Wow. And do you think they are Americans?
Armstrong
Oh, they're absolutely Americans. Yeah. Yeah. People just going to the sports bars and stuff like that, wearing jerseys like you do when you go to watch a big sporting event with a whole bunch of people.
Getty
They'd adopted a team. But see, that's not cool anymore because our team did pretty well.
Armstrong
Yeah, I've seen lots of people wearing a variety of. I don't know if they like developed teams that they liked over the years of their life or just this tournament ever. I've seen lots of different jerseys from people.
Getty
Yeah, yeah, fair enough. I just think you ought to be jailed for it. I mean, free speech and everything, but you can speak in jail. So you've gone against your country. You've betrayed you. You are a foreign agent. An unregistered foreign agent.
Armstrong
I enjoyed it. I've learned enough about soccer that I enjoy, but I got no comebacks. For anybody. Who says I'm supposed to watch for an hour and a half and nobody scored a goal? It's hard to argue.
Getty
One team is utterly dominant and the score, 0 0. This game is broken. You need to fix the rules. You know, I actually missed the goal. I'd been watching the whole game. Got up to get, get, got some out of the fridge, come back and it says 10 and everybody's jumping up and down.
Armstrong
Well, I guess that's it.

Podcast Summary: Armstrong & Getty On Demand – "You Gotta Score a Goal!" (July 20, 2026, iHeartPodcasts)
This episode revolves around Armstrong & Getty's reactions to the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final. The hosts share their evolving opinions on soccer, discuss the worldwide popularity of the sport versus American football, review the star-studded (and much-criticized) halftime show, and reflect on the experience of live performances in front of massive crowds. The tone blends dry humor, playful ribbing, and candid observations about both the soccer match and its cultural context.
Armstrong admits to catching "World Cup fever" after a lifetime of mocking soccer, this year he got into the World Cup final—even finding a 0-0 match before extra time “very exciting.”
“After a lifetime of mocking soccer and people who watch it, I got into the World cup this year… it was very exciting. I thought the fact that it was 0-0 going into extra time was exciting.”
— Armstrong (01:55)
Getty, a longtime soccer watcher, finds finals frustratingly conservative:
“World cup finals make me insane. Because they’re so conservative. I find them boring. It’s like watching...basketball in the four corners era.”
— Getty (02:22)
The hosts marvel at soccer’s global reach, juxtaposed with America’s singular devotion to its own version of football.
“Practically every high school in the world probably has a soccer team. How many high schools...Are there any high schools in Spain where anybody plays our version of football with pads and helmets?”
— Armstrong (03:14)
Getty notes American football in Europe is rare and generally an expat-driven novelty:
“There are [football teams], but they're very, very few...it gets written up in the New York Times.”
— Getty (03:46)
They discuss the idea of renaming American football for clarity, jokingly suggesting aggressive rebranding tactics:
“How about you change the name of your sport or we’ll bomb you back to the stone age.”
— Armstrong (07:57)
Jennifer Hudson’s national anthem performance receives respect for her vocal prowess.
“[She] is an amazing vocalist...some people’s sinuses and throats are shaped in such a way that it makes a pleasing noise when they sing.”
— Getty (05:19)
Tom Cruise’s dramatic pre-game narration is mocked for overblown language about soccer’s global unity.
“It’s a soccer tournament. Take it easy.”
— Getty (06:01) “This is the part I wanted to hear from Tom Cruise.”
— Armstrong (06:11)
“These stories, now, these stories belong to each and every one of us...Let us celebrate each other. This is football. This is unity.”
— Tom Cruise (06:14)
“The most popular sport, the most popular TV show, the most popular, really, anything in the United States is football. But we don’t mean that sport. So calling something else football seems pretty crazy.”
— Armstrong (06:52)
Criticism of the World Cup Halftime Show: ABC report mentions online reviews calling the show "bizarre and disjointed," featuring Madonna, Shakira, Chris Martin, the Muppets, and Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) introducing Justin Bieber.
“Congratulations to the World cup final. You have risen to the level of the Super Bowl where everybody complains about your halftime show.”
— Armstrong (09:37)
Getty’s take on halftime entertainment:
“What are we doing here? What is this exercise again? I’ve called for this for ages: a marching band or a boxing match or a hockey game. Anything but pop stars of the moment.”
— Getty (09:54)
Jokes about Madonna’s performance and age:
“When you’re getting free medical care from the government because you qualify it by age, you should no longer wear thigh highs in public...Give up the sex symbol thing.”
— Armstrong (11:16)
Discussion about Justin Bieber’s solo acoustic performance and whether it’s more nerve-wracking to play for massive crowds or tiny audiences.
“Standing in the middle of the field...with an acoustic guitar, I would not be able to get my hands to work, you know? I couldn’t get my fingers to function.”
— Armstrong (12:31)
Both hosts agree smaller crowds can be more intimidating due to the intense focus.
“The giant crowds are way easier because you can’t focus on the individual bored or angry person. But I’ve played, like in bars where there’s 20 people and you can...hear their individual sighs. Yeah, it’s way harder.”
— Armstrong (13:20)
Getty quotes Joni Mitchell:
“The easiest relationship in the world is 10,000 people. One is the hardest.”
— Getty (14:24)
The winning goal for Spain finally arrives after a long, tense match:
“That’s how the whole thing ended after 125 minutes...No scoring for most of that.” — Armstrong (17:54)
“It’s free. It’s a goal. Will that be the goal that wins Spain their second World cup title?”
— Tom Cruise (18:08)
Stats highlight Spain’s dominance:
“There were 16 shots on goal by Spain, and that number was—let me look at this—0 by Argentina. 0. They didn’t get one kick at the goalie.”
— Armstrong (18:27)
Getty’s frustration as an Argentina supporter:
“Oh, for God’s sake, would you guys do something?”
— Getty (18:50)
Armstrong reflects on the oddity of nearly buying an Argentina jersey just for the occasion, and both marvel at the broad display of team jerseys among U.S. fans (often with tongue-in-cheek jibes about patriotism).
“People just going to the sports bars and stuff like that, wearing jerseys like you do when you go to watch a big sporting event.”
— Armstrong (19:51) “You ought to be jailed for it...You are a foreign agent. An unregistered foreign agent.”
— Getty (20:07)
On the difficulty of defending soccer to skeptics:
“I got no comebacks for anybody who says I’m supposed to watch for an hour and a half and nobody scored a goal. It’s hard to argue.”
— Armstrong (20:21) “One team is utterly dominant and the score, 0 0. This game is broken. You need to fix the rules.”
— Getty (20:32)
The conversation is lively, irreverent, and self-aware, blending sports analysis, cultural critique, and personal anecdotes. Armstrong & Getty neither take soccer (nor themselves) too seriously, frequently using sarcasm and light self-deprecation.
This episode is a must-listen for fans interested in cultural differences around sports, soccer’s slow but steady rise in American interest, and the spectacle that is modern sports entertainment—served with an ample side of Armstrong & Getty’s trademark banter.
