So it's never a dull moment. Over at OpenAI, I wake up to news that three more people are leaving OpenAI, including Greg Brockman. Well, to be fair, Greg Brockman is taking a sabbatical and extended leave of absence, but at this critical time, just before GPT5. Yeah, so there's some speculation either way and of course we're reading the tea leaves from the outside, so all we have really is speculation. But so Greg Brockman is taking a sabbatical and then co founder John Shulman is actually joining Anthropic, which this is a pattern that we've seen. I'm a big fan of Anthropic because their approach to safety and alignment is just fundamentally different. And then Peter Dang, VP of Consumer Product, which OpenAI, having pivoted to being a consumer product company, him leaving. That's also very interesting. You'd think that if OpenAI was the place to be, if they were truly the epicenter of the march to AGI, then all these people would be staying. But they're not. And this follows several other departures from OpenAI, namely Jan Leica, head of Super Alignment Team. So here's the thing. I've been talking to a lot of people, some industry insiders, and what kind of what people have come to believe is that Sam Altman was already was always a mercenary. And so in the tech space, in the innovation space, there's this paradigm of missionary versus mercenary. So he pretended to be a missionary. His missionary mission was to, you know, is this benevolent mission of create safety, safe AGI for the world. But then every time his actions told us otherwise, he would compromise those values, that missionary value, in order to either make more money, have more power, or become ingratiated with the power brokers, namely now, you know, the NSA and the government, because he's got a revolving door access to the United States government and vice versa. And so in that respect, when you look at it, missionary versus mercenary, his actions say loud and clear he is a mercenary. He was probably a mercenary in missionaries closing. And now that the mask is off, a lot of people are realizing that now. Craig said that this is his first time to relax. So why is he relaxing? Is their mission over? Or is there just nothing else that he can do? But you know, he also left in solidarity with Sam Altman back when he was ousted last year. So it may shake out again. A lot of this is speculation, but I did want to also just spend a little time on, on the Twitters. So I am back on Twitter. Dave Shappy. And Twitter's a different experience from when I was last on there, but the conversation has also evolved. So when I first got into the AI space, there was nobody else here. And I don't mean like nobody. There's a lot of you that were. That were here. But certainly the public conversation is different. And there's this weird tribalism evolving. And just like off the cuff, at least on the Twitter space and other social media, there's like these very clear epistemic tribes evolving. And it's like they all have their own norms and their own axioms. So there's, number one is the Utkowski and Safety people. These are the ones that are like, the sky is falling. AI is going to kill everyone. Why aren't you taking this seriously? And they come in different flavors, from the totally hyperbolic to the more reasonable, like, well, what about bioweapons? And what's your stance on open air, open source? Sorry. Also, what's your source and stance on OpenAI? Then the other side is the Gary Marcusian AI is garbage. Look at this. LOL. Look at this one little thing that it can't do anymore while ignoring everything else that it can do and all the threats that it represents. I talked to my wife about this one and she thinks that this is like just pure cope. Like AI is here and it's more significant than I Hoped, and I can't cope with that level of whatever. And then there's the salvation fantasy accelerationist. These are the ones that are like, I'm always talking about salvation fantasy, which is just like, oh, if, if this comes, it's going to fix everything in my life. It's going to change everything for the better. And it's like the realism here is that, like, technology often makes things worse before it gets better. I mean, just look at the history of agriculture, look at the history of the Internet, look at the history of petroleum. Like, all of these things. Like, yes, objectively, ultimately we end up in a better place because of these technologies. But it can be very messy in the meantime, for instance, with the invention of agriculture, zoonotic diseases, physical injuries, because we're living not in lifestyles that we're supposed to live in, so on and so forth. Number four, what I call the hacky Web three crypto bro people. This was actually with the implosion of FTX in the AI space. There was like, a lot of, like, memes going around, just like, watch out, all the crypto bros that just lost their shirts in crypto are now going to rebrand themselves as AI experts. And that's pretty much what happened. And that's not to say that I have anything against cryptocurrency. I think it's cool. But, oh, my God, there are so many people that are just like, shilling everything. Like, there are plenty of. Just put it that way, there are plenty of shills in the web 3 and crypto space who are just snake oil salesmen. And so then I asked, like, what are the other epistemic tribes? And one of the epistemic tribes that was suggested is the realist, which is where I'm trying to be. And so, like, I'm not popular with any of these groups because I'm just like, guys, like, it's not going to be as good as you think it is. It's also not going to be as bad as you think it is. And stop trying to sell me blockchain for everything. There was someone trying to say like, oh, it should all be on the blockchain. I'm like, what? It's just like, some people are just like, oh, this new shiny toy, let's apply it to everywhere. There's an old Dilbert comic where it's like, oh, we should get a SQL Server. And Dilbert asks like, what color SQL Server do you want? He's like, malve. We should get a Malve SQL Server. I've Heard those are the best. And that's like what people are doing with AI. It's just like we need to put AI and blockchain and crypto on everything. It's not how it works anyways. But yeah, so the Matt Wolf jumped in, he's like, I'm the type, the tribe of tech optimists who want to see advancement but not at the expense of human creators and safety. Yeah, no, like I agree. I'm like, we're, we're like, we're a small tribe, the realist, the tech optimists, you know, so, so on and so forth now. Anyways, so on the topic of OpenAI, we've got some, we've got some, some accounts, you know, so there's the I rule the world strawberry guy over here and a few others with potentially credible insider information. So this is, this is not a take that I would have expected. You'll start seeing more people leave OpenAI because they've built super intelligence. The staircase has started building itself up, up and away. So I don't know if I, I don't know if I give this, this take much credibility, but it's also possible because like we know that there's the Q star that they've been working on. We know that they have the Strawberry project, Strawberry, whatever that happens to be. It's entirely possible that they have achieved some kind of breakthrough. And maybe what they've realized is like some of them might feel like their mission is over so it's time to leave. Others might say like, hey, this isn't going the way that I thought. I need to take my experts somewhere, my expertise somewhere else so that like we can offset the mercenary mission of OpenAI. Because yeah, like when you, when you look at behavior, like if you take it at face value, you could say Sam Altman honestly believes that he has been tapped for this like sacred mission to create safe AGI and that he honestly sincerely believes that only he can do it. And then his behavior would still be somewhat consistent with what he's doing. You know, he's like, okay, I need money to make this happen. I need power to make this happen. I need to be, you know, I need to have two way relationships with the military industrial complex to make this happen. But at the same time, Occam's razor says also he would be behaving that way if he was just a mercenary. So wait, you weighed in your hand. So I don't, I don't agree with this take, but it's interesting that this is part of the conversation. And then yeah, so Matthew Berman chimed in like, you know, I'm taking a sabbatical through the end of the year. First time to relax. The mission is far from complete. We still have a safe AGI to build. So again, we're getting very, very mixed messaging from Greg Bachman and others like, okay, so some people are leaving, some people are defecting, and then, you know, blah blah blah. The benta says all press is good press. Yeah, what I will what I will agree. And a lot of you in the comments pointed this out is that OpenAI is actually really shopping is hard, right?
