How are you today?
Maggie Stasik (1:46)
I am good. Ella, how are you?
Al Crestman (1:48)
I am good. I'm very good and I feel very satiated and it's probably because I had a great breakfast. You know what they say, breakfast is the best way to start the morning.
Maggie Stasik (1:58)
Yes.
Al Crestman (1:58)
Speaking of food, you have to be living under a rock to have not heard of GLP1s, right? Yeah, we hear a lot about them on different podcasts, different news segments and such. We hear that there is these agencies that provide memberships to get better access. We hear a lot about them. What we don't hear a lot about is how these medicines affect the skin. So what do you think about talking about that today?
Maggie Stasik (2:28)
Yeah, I'm curious and you bring up a really good point, something I have not even contemplated. Aside from the body, what is the impact on the skin?
Al Crestman (2:37)
Absolutely. Now I have to tell you, I'm speaking from firsthand experience as a practitioner who has worked on many who have gone through or are currently using a GLP1 and I've seen some similarities and then I have also used them. I've used two different kinds. But what I want to do today is because a lot of times we're associating with one particular medication. I'd like to define a little bit more. So let's talk about the science of slim what are GLP1s? We've heard the brand names Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro, but they're not all the same. What they do in the body is they mimic this natural peptide hormone that encourages two things. One is a satiation, a feeling of fullness, but also a slowing down of the digestive tract. So think of how you feel when you're really, really full. You're not hungry, you're not craving anything. Um, so with that we get appetite suppression. The slow digestion means there's different nutrient diffusion. And then this all helps to regulate insulin production, which is how this was discovered in the first place. So this is really off label use of a medication that saw a shift from diabetes treatment into widespread use for weight loss. It kind of took off. And there you go. The biggest difference is semaglutide versus tirzepatide. And semaglutide is GLP1, tirzepatide is GLP1 plus something else. And now they're working on a third version is semaglutide plus something else plus something else. Each time refining this medication a little bit more. And that refinement changes some of the side effects and the efficacies. In fact, recently they're just talking about releasing a daily pill versus these weekly shots, which is going to be really interesting, really interesting.
