A holiday packed weekend with Bachelor Nation. We're going to be talking to Zach and Katie, Joan and Susan and Kathy today, so lots of catching up to do. We went to Disneyland yesterday and tonight is Jingle Ball. So so far it's been an eventful and exciting trip to Los Angeles.

[Serena Pitt]

What was your favorite ride at Disneyland?

[Joe Amabile]

I liked the Nightmare Before Christmas ride and I liked the fact that like it's usually Haunted Mansion and they kind of like do it up for the holidays. All the decor felt really cool and then they had that gingerbread house that smelled like gingerbread and I just thought it was very creative in there.

[Serena Pitt]

What did you think about the Star Wars Ride.

[Joe Amabile]

The Star wars ride was incredible. But I also think like I couldn't get over the fact of how expensive.

[Serena Pitt]

Yeah, I heard it's the most expensive ride ever created.

[Joe Amabile]

400 million all of Disney. Like more than any of the rides at Disney World. But I will say it was incredibly impressive. Like there's no tracks, you're sliding around. It really feels like a mix of a ride and an experience.

[Serena Pitt]

I'm someone that gets really nauseous on rides and I. This is not a pitch for Disneyland by the way. But I, I didn't get nauseous at all.

[Joe Amabile]

Yeah, this is actually pitch for Delta. You can use your points, your sky miles to get to Disneyland which is what we did.

[Serena Pitt]

Delta.com SkyMiles yes, and it's a much better ride than the Star wars ride. I will say our flight had like zero turbulence.

Yeah, it was very smooth. Great flight.

And I liked now Delta. We watched them. I watched the movie on the plane and I didn't finish it. And now I could watch the rest on the way home.

Yeah, I went back and watched Wicked one but I slept for most of the flights so I didn't get through all of Wicked one.

How many times are you going to watch Wicked?

It's like the perfect plane movie because it's three hours, it's engaging. Plus we just saw the second one. So it was fun to go back and watch the first one let down the second one. The first one. The first one's where it's at. The first one's where it's at. So. Yeah, but I didn't finish it. But we got a long flight home to New York after Jingle Ball tonight. So I'll finish it then.

No.

Oh, yeah, we.

Pineapple dole whip.

Joe and I left a little early and we went on a side quest so I could get a churro and Joe could get the pineapple Dole whip. And honestly, it was so good.

You mentioned that. I forgot. I should have tried it.

It's like Dole pineapple juice, Dole frozen pineapple, and then vanilla ice cream, like, all blended together.

[Kathy]

Was there vodka in it?

[Joe Amabile]

No, but you know what? It would be good as, like, a boozy.

That's true. I Woke up at 5am this morning, wide awake, ready to go.

Yeah. All of a sudden I hear, are you awake? Full volume.

I'm like, you were, though.

I was. You know when you're, like, on the verge of waking up? Yeah, I was basically awake.

All right, so let's talk holidays.

Susan, you go first, because. Is this your first Christmas with your boyfriend?

[Susan]

Yes, but I won't be with him, so he'll be in St. Martin and I'll be home because we have traditions.

Okay. What are your traditions?

[Susan]

Yeah, I have to make the exact same food every year. Although I'm going to slip it up a little. And I'm not telling anybody. Still, I'll have a fit instead of the. The Italian part is usually raviolis. I found a place I don't even have to cook with the best stuffed shells I've ever had.

[Joe Amabile]

Okay.

[Susan]

So I'm ordering trays of stuffed shells, but I'll make the gravy meatball, sausage, ham, all the.

[Serena Pitt]

What do you stuff your ravioli with? Rat.

[Susan]

Rat.

Okay. Yeah, I love.

I know.

You know what, people?

I actually, I don't like rat. The only time I'll eat ragat is if it's on like a, like sourdough or Italian bread toasted with ragat and honey. Well, I like, I like, I like it with honey, but I don't like it in a ravioli.

Ravioli wouldn't kind of rav you like a spinach ravioli.

[Serena Pitt]

I'm not really big in raviolis.

[Susan]

Yeah, shells are the bomb.

Kathy, what are you doing?

Well, I'm not eating ragat or ravioli.

I can tell you that.

We do the same thing for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We do turkey and mashed potatoes. But this year, for the first time in many years, my daughter is doing Christmas dinner at her house.

[Susan]

Oh, really?

[Kathy]

And I do the baking. That's my thing. I bake homemade eggnog bread, pecan pie, and I do it all from scratch.

[Serena Pitt]

Lemon bars?

[Kathy]

No, I do not do lemon bars. But I, I happen to know that that's a bachelor favorite.

[Joe Amabile]

That's the new bachelor favorite. Mel's favorite.

So, yeah, I'm. I'm excited to have my grandkids and we're all going to be together. It's gonna be.

Are you happy that you're not hosting and it's your daughter now?

[Kathy]

In a word? Yes.

And where is that? Where, where is she live?

[Kathy]

In Austin. In Texas.

Okay. I've been to Austin once. Well, actually I've been there twice, but this is the last time. I enjoy it. I enjoy it. How's the weather right now?

Today it's rainy and cold, but when I go home tomorrow, it's gonna be 75 and sunny.

[Serena Pitt]

Oh, that's great.

[Susan]

Where are you two gonna be?

[Joe Amabile]

We are gonna be in Toronto. We're heading there on the 19th. Joe and I alternate every other year, so we'll do family Christmas with him one year. Family Christmas with me one year. So yeah, it's a Toronto year, so we'll be there for about 10 days.

[Susan]

Oh, fuck.

[Serena Pitt]

Probably longer than 10 days.

[Joe Amabile]

We're gonna be there the 19th. When do we get in to the 30th?

[Kathy]

Okay, if we're counting, that's actually 11 days.

[Joe Amabile]

There will probably be snow. Yeah, Toronto.

[Kathy]

Are you kidding? They got a ton of snow.

[Joe Amabile]

Yeah, well, it's a little hit or miss for Christmas. Like we'll. It sometimes won't last. On the ground. But yeah, it'll be cold, that's for sure.

[Kathy]

I was in New York for Thanksgiving and we. The day after Thanksgiving, we had a big snowstorm. We went out and cut down a Christmas tree. I mean, it's right out of a Norman Rockwell painting.

[Joe Amabile]

It was. We were in Chicago for Thanksgiving and we got snowed in. We changed our flight from Saturday to Sunday because we were like, there's no way we're getting out or we're going to be like. All the flights were like four hours delayed or canceled because of the snow storm.

[Serena Pitt]

Last year we went after Christmas. We went like three days after Christmas. We went to Costa rica for. For 12 days. And that was.

[Joe Amabile]

It was so nice.

[Serena Pitt]

I'm actually like, depressed that we're not going.

[Joe Amabile]

I know. My parents. My parents did look at that house again to see if it was available.

[Kathy]

Just out of curiosity, beach, suntan lotion, tropical drinks, or shoveling snow in Toronto. I don't know which one could be better.

[Susan]

I leave on the 28th.

[Serena Pitt]

The truth is I don't mind it up until Christmas. I actually prefer. I prefer the cold weather and like the holiday season.

[Joe Amabile]

Yeah.

[Serena Pitt]

Pre Christmas, as soon as Christmas Day hits, I actually want to leave Christmas Day at 5pm get me on a flight and I'm gone.

[Kathy]

Yeah, I'm with you.

I put some thoughts in my head, but I never say it out loud in case I can't follow through like everybody else needs.

Eat healthier, start exercising. Susan, it just doesn't work.

Every year she does that.

I'm gonna throw mine out. And I do this. I do this. I've. Over the past couple years, I've incorporated this more into my daily life. So I would say I probably. I would say I'm probably like a four to five day a week guy, but I'm gonna try to do seven day a week. Seven days a week. And that's a minimum of a 15 minute stretch every day.

That's a good one.

I just don't like to. I would rather. I love to exercise. I would rather go to the gym, run six miles. Anything other than cook.

Because my husband was. Which is another reason I didn't cook.

I have to clear my name. When my kids were little, when I first got married, I got Bon Appetit magazine and I learned to cook really gourmet meals. And then I had children and they would spit it out. And I was like, we're going back to Taco Tuesday. Like, why did I even bother? So then when the kids grew up, I got really used to not cooking. And my husband started to cook, and he was a great cook. I mean, his lobster Mac and cheese was legendary.

That sounds starving.

I have. She's right. I have everything. I mean, I don't even know what some of the things are, like, what tools they are.

So, you know, I'm rooting through the cabinet. Oh, we could use this.

You are. You don't have to try. You are interesting. Well, we're going into the holidays, as you know. We know that you love sharing your recipes on social media. People love watching them. You have your. Your soup recipes, all the things. What are your favorite holiday recipes to make?

[Joan]

Oh, God. So holiday recipes are all about, like, the things my kids like. So the things that I've done for years and years and years, and I have to make those. Even if they're, like, not my favorite, they're my family's favorite, so I make them. And that's kind of evolved over the years. Now I have grandkids, so things have changed a little bit. But I always do the same kind of thing. But one of their favorites is this. It's like a pineapple souffle. It's almost like a. It's made with bread and stuff. It's really, really good. So I have to make that, which seems, like, so weird at Meat.

[Serena Pitt]

Dessert.

[Joan]

Meat. There's no meat net.

[Joe Amabile]

No, it's a dessert.

[Joan]

It's like you kind of serve it, like, along, like, with everything else on the plate. So I always do a big tenderloin filet, and I always do salmon, and then I have to have that.

[Joe Amabile]

And then you don't do turkey.

[Joan]

I don't do turkey. So we do it on Thanksgiving and everybody's like, so. So about turkey in my family. So I don't do it again on Christmas. I used to when we were. When I was a kid, my mom always did, but my kids don't love it. So we do salmon and flight.

[Serena Pitt]

I feel like if you, if you were, if you were to be selfish, you know, let's. Let's kind of go back to the whole theme of the Golden Bachelorette you've spent your whole life giving for your kids and everyone else. What would you want?

[Joan]

What would I. To order something?

[Joe Amabile]

What would you order? That's fair.

[Joan]

I probably order Chinese food.

[Joe Amabile]

I love that.

[Joan]

I would love it. Yeah. Yeah. And we did that on New Year on Christmas Eve now. So we use to. Also before I had grandkids, when I just had all these kind of adult or young adult kids, we would go out to dinner after we go to church on Christmas Eve and then we'd go out to dinner and we would go to a really great steakhouse like a Morton's or someplace really great. And we would all be dressed up. Well, now I have grandkids and there is no taking them out. First of all, we need to get them in bed because we need to.

[Joe Amabile]

Do the whole Santa thing, right? That's gonna take a while.

[Joan]

The whole, like we do Elf on the shelf. Oh my God, it's so elaborate. I'm so glad that didn't exist. I know when my kids were little. It's just, it's like a big responsibility.

[Joe Amabile]

To have on the shelf too. And like, I can totally understand, like why parents do it for their kids.

[Serena Pitt]

I can see why kids fall for it.

[Joe Amabile]

I didn't know I would fall for it.

[Serena Pitt]

Yeah, I didn't. Well, I didn't know the. I was like, elf on the shelf. Well, like, what the heck. Yeah, what is it? But I didn't know that the elf during the day was frozen.

[Joe Amabile]

Yeah. And you can't touch it.

[Serena Pitt]

And you can't touch it.

[Joe Amabile]

Otherwise he loses. We were with some of his friends who have young kids and they were explaining Elf on the Shelf and it's.

[Joan]

Elaborate and they have poems that go with it and why they're. You should see the stuff that my. My daughter and son in law do. It's so elaborate. Like they do footprints, like all the way down the hallway. Like where? And then up the wall. And it's crazy. Yeah, it's crazy.

[Serena Pitt]

I will have a very Tough time when we have a kid of not messing with the elf to mess with the kid.

[Joe Amabile]

Yeah, because you're gonna want to touch the elf and freak out the kid like, oh, no, you can't do it.

[Serena Pitt]

I will do that.

[Joe Amabile]

Don't do that. Please don't do that. Please don't do that. No, you won't, because you love the magic of Christmas.

[Joan]

Yeah, it's fun. I mean, like, messing with your kids for a whole month is kind of fun, and I'll let you do that. It really, like, has the whole buildup, which is fun.

Well, and parents I know are like, oh, my gosh, like, behave. The elf is watching, or Santa's watching.

[Joan]

You have a lot of threats at Christmas time. Yeah. Yeah.

[Joe Amabile]

What are some of your other favorite holiday traditions that you guys do?

[Joan]

So now we come home and we do after church instead of going out to dinner, this beautiful dinner, which I love doing, but it's just not practical anymore. Yeah. We come home and we do, like, hot chocolate. We put our pajamas on, and we order pizza. So it's perfect, and I love doing that, and I think it's, like, kind of a tradition amongst a lot of households, because last year I went to order pizza, and they're like, yeah, you can't have pizza delivered tonight. You have to order it, like, a week in advance. No way. So I'm gonna. I have it, like, set an alarm on my phone to order pizza, like, a week before Christmas.

[Joe Amabile]

Wow. Well, yeah, I guess if you're the hosting house, too. You're making. You're cooking all day on Christmas day.

[Joan]

Oh, I do brunch on Christmas morning, too.

[Joe Amabile]

Yeah, my aunt used to do. Do that. She used to host brunch and dinner.

[Joan]

I did the same thing. I kind of turn over all the plates in the kitchen. Everybody goes home after brunch, and then I turn over the whole house. I get rid of all the trash, I get all the dishes washed, and I start cooking dinner.

[Joe Amabile]

Oh, my gosh. That is a long.

[Serena Pitt]

Yeah, we always did brunch in my family, too.

[Joe Amabile]

Yes. We just do, like, cinnamon rolls and coffee and, like, bacon and eggs.

[Serena Pitt]

Bacon and eggs.

[Joe Amabile]

Really?

That's the best.

[Joe Amabile]

But my. My Auntie Judy used to, like, literally do, like, like, potatoes and bacon and sausage. We have all eggs and, like, full. Full, full Christmas brunch at all.

Did you. You flew here, correct? Yeah. Where'd you fly from?

[Joan]

From? I live in Maryland. I flew from D.C. yeah, I. I know that.

I know that you live in Maryland, but I've never. I never know if you're in New York or.

I'm gonna be.

I feel like you bounce around a lot.

I do. I love that. You know, it's like the kind of the cool thing that happened from all this, that I have all these really great opportunities I never had before, and I, like, say yes to everything. So I could be anywhere at any time.

Will you and Chalk spend the holidays together? Yes.

[Joan]

Okay, so this is great. So I know on the show we said we're going to find a place in New York, and we had no idea, number one, how hard that is and number two, how busy we'd be. So I finally just said to him, I go, let's just get a place the whole month of December and early January. So we got an Airbnb for starting on December 7th through January 7th. So we're going to be in New York most of that time. So we're going to be together, and then he's going to come to my house for Christmas. I'm going to go home a few days before Christmas and get that all figured out, and then we're gonna go back to New York City for the, like, two weeks after Christmas, that is.

[Joe Amabile]

What are the New Year's plans?

[Joan]

I don't have any right now. I really want to go to Timescare Square. I've never, ever done that. But I don't think I'm one of those people that can go out at 6 o' clock in the morning. I kind of want to. Is there, like, a special place I could go and not be freezing cold?

[Joe Amabile]

I feel like someone can find you a special place to go watch the.

[Joan]

Ball drive, investigate that opportunity, if there is one. But I really would like to do that.

[Joe Amabile]

That would be very magical. I feel like that's a fun way to raise it.

[Joan]

Yeah. How about you guys? Are you gonna be in town?

[Joe Amabile]

No, we're actually going, I think, to a friend's lake house over New Year's.

[Joan]

Yeah, you've probably done it in the city. You've lived there for a number of years.

[Serena Pitt]

We usually don't do. We usually don't do much on New Year's Eve. I've never been a big New Year's Eve.

[Joe Amabile]

Oh, I'm not either. Yeah, we've only been in New York for New Year's, I think maybe one or two years. And we usually go to our friend's family's apartment in the city and we do like a drink or two there. And then we go back and watch the ball drop. The two of us or we're. We're traveling somewhere. But honestly, New Year's in the city is so hard because it's like you're going to a bar, you're going to a restaurant. It's like you need tickets and it's set menu, it's expensive. And it's just like. My favorite New Year's is either like at home or at a friend's place or on a beach.

[Joan]

I kind of want to do that too. Honestly, I do want to do. Go see the whole Times Square thing. But also I really don't want to deal with all the crowds.

[Joe Amabile]

No, if you can get hooked up, that's the place to be. I don't have it in me to like stand in the crowd for like five hours waiting for the ball to drop. Chilly. That's just not my jam.

[Serena Pitt]

We just travel so much. When you travel, are you a. When you get on a plane, are you a comfy dresser or do you dress up?

[Joan]

So I'm kind of in between. So I don't come in like pajamas. Like, you see people and they like.

[Joe Amabile]

Their grossest sweats and they're in like.

[Joan]

They, like they didn't do their hair. I get up, I take a shower, I do my hair. I've got my makeup on and I'll look like this.

[Joe Amabile]

Oh, you look very put together.

[Joan]

Then jeans and like a pair of sneakers or whatever. But I do want to be. I mean, like, when I fly here, it's a six hour flight.

[Joe Amabile]

Yeah.

[Joan]

Like you kind of need to be like somewhat comfortable.

[Joe Amabile]

Yeah.

[Serena Pitt]

Yeah. On the way here, I wore. I wore jagging pants in a hoodie and then.

[Joe Amabile]

Yeah, but you still look put together. You know what I mean? Like you're on your knee. Jays. I will show up looking. I've. I have shown up to the airport looking pretty rough, but typically I'm in sweats. I can't. I can't travel in jeans. I've tried it and I just. You're just too uncomfortable. Yeah, I have a very low tolerance for physical discomfort in terms of clothes and jewelry and stuff like that. So I'm in leggings or I'm in.

[Joan]

I do leggings a lot. I have to admit. I do leggings, but I do get up. I feel like you need to look put together. Like you need to be clean.

[Joe Amabile]

Yeah.

[Joan]

I shower fresher.

[Joe Amabile]

I feel better.

Oh, I always shower.

Oh, geez. I have so many things that need to improve. I usually think about it like the day before. So I don't put a ton of thought into it. But when I do do a New Year's resolution, I'm really hard on myself about keeping it, so I'm pretty careful about what I do. I think this year, you know, I. I hear so much. Okay. First of all, I'm a huge sweet eater. I love chocolate. I love cookies. I eat them every day.

[Serena Pitt]

Did you have a cookie yesterday at Disney?

[Joan]

Absolutely. How good were you, by the way? I had one this morning, too.

[Serena Pitt]

Oh, they were so good.

[Joan]

Yeah, they were so good.

But I hear all this data about sugar feeds cancers, and, you know, I'm not like, a big, you know, investigate all that kind of stuff, but I do hear that a Lot. And so I really feel like I need to slow down on my sugar intake. So I think that might be like, maybe like my health goal is like to not cut out sugar because that's not really realistic for me, but to like decrease it a lot.

I'm gonna do it too.

We talked all things wedding, and now we saw you guys just had your wedding celebration in Austin. How did that go?

Oh, my God, it was amazing.

It flew by, though.

We had, like, so much going on. So we had the pickleball tournament, which was kind of like our version of a welcome party, and then our celebration. Yeah, it was really cool.

Like, pair up people or do people enter as pairs people?

[Katie Thurston]

Yeah, we paired up people. Usually like couples that came together. It was really good. It was a lot busier than we thought it was going to be. Like, we thought there was going to be probably less people that showed up to the pickleball tournament, but we had a good amount of people. And the guy that was running the tournament, I feel like he needed an assistant because it was so chaotic.

Just like one of your friends that ran the tournament.

[Zach Shallcross]

Yeah, literally. He's a pro pickleball player, and he's like, oh, I'll do this. He had a whole app set up just to plug in the names, and it was bracket style.

He kicked ass for sure.

Did you guys have, like, drinks and food?

Yeah, we had.

We did a pledge of allegiance to start. We started with, like, the US Pledge of allegiance and then the Canadian.

It was super cool, and it was.

It was. Yeah, it was amazing. We did our first dance together, so it kind of felt more of like a reception feel to it. And then Zach did a dance with my mom and his mom, so that was beautiful. And then we did a speech. I got choked up within, like, three seconds. And then Zach took over. Thank God. But, yeah, it was just amazing. It was just, like, so cool to have, like, our bachelor world and then my Canadian friends and family and then his friends and family from California all together, and I don't know the next time that would ever happen, so. It was. It was beautiful.

Did anything. Oh, sorry. We all four of us.

Okay. Did you get choked up because you were sad or because you were, like, I was emotions or nerves?

It was more of, like, me being, like, overwhelmed with gratitude that everybody was there. Like, I could even, like, start crying now just, like, at the thought of, like, do it.

Guys, I haven't. I haven't been sleeping.

Like, but it was just amazing. It truly was like, everybody flying in. Like, it's not cheap to do, so.

Yeah, no, it worked perfectly. And then at midnight or so, towards the end of the night, we had raising canes come and just drop off box combos for everybody.

Late night food at weddings is the best. Yeah, we go to a lot of weddings, so we have all of our different, like, tricks and hacks. And usually I'll eat before we go to the wedding, a little something. And then dinner is usually always like, you're eating but you're not eating. And then, like, the chicken sandwiches come out and I'm all over it. Were there any, like, problems, disasters, Anything go wrong?

[Zach Shallcross]

No, no, actually, no. No, everyone got along. I mean, there was. It was fun just watching the world's blend because, like, there was some, like, interesting conversations that people had, for sure. But there was no problems. Everyone got along. Everyone had so much fun. Yeah, there's like, we're still, like, talking to people about it. Of like, could you believe this? It was so much fun and.

Oh, yeah, yeah.

But, yeah, no, no drama. It was very smooth.

He was watering the plant with tequila. I was like, you get your ass back to the bar and you take a shot. And he did.

This is your first Christmas as a married couple. What are you guys doing? Go for it, baby.

Nothing really. She's working at the hospital, so you have to work, like every other Christmas or something. So we're gonna just do a Kate and I and honey, little Christmas. Just sit down. But we are flying out to California the week prior to celebrate with my family.

Yeah, we're gonna do like an early Christmas, open up presents with his family, I think on the 23rd, 23rd, 22nd. Oh, okay.

That's not even that early. That's still very holiday.

What about your filming Canada?

My mom is actually going to spend it with my brother's girlfriend's family. She's a single mom, so she's just gonna join them.

Like, school systems are different than in Canada. In Canada, it's like everyone born in the same calendar year goes into a grade. But here's different.

This was like, brand new news to me. Kind of went over my head, too.
