Hello, and welcome to "Beauty and the Biz," where we'll discuss the business and marketing side of plastic surgery. As always, I'm your host, Catherine Maley, author of "Your Aesthetic Practice – What Your Patients Are Saying." and consultant to plastic surgeons, helping them get more patients and more profits. 25 Years in Solo Practice and Still Going Strong — Dr. Victor Ferrari shares the simple systems that helped him build a steady, reputable cosmetic practice. Specifically, Dr. Victor Ferrari is a board-certified plastic surgeon. Additionally, he is the founder of Premier Plastic Surgery Center and Premier Spa in Charlotte, North Carolina. Furthermore, he has been in private practice for more than 25 years. Consequently, he has a strong reputation in his community. Currently, in this week's "Beauty and the Biz" podcast, Dr. Ferrari shares his secrets. Explicitly, he explains what it really takes to build a long-standing solo cosmetic practice. Importantly, he did this without chasing every shiny object. Interestingly, he would also be open to bringing in an associate surgeon. Ultimately, this would keep his surgical OR busy. Moreover, it would expand capacity and create more long-term leverage. Notably, what stood out to me was his intentional focus on the fundamentals: First, he chose a location across from a hospital to give patients confidence. Next, he built a facility designed for growth that includes room for another surgeon. Additionally, he added ancillary services that naturally feed surgical consults. Furthermore, he respects the patient's time with longer consults and minimal waiting. Finally, he created office protocols so patient concerns are answered quickly. Also, Dr. Ferrari talks about the business lessons he learned the hard way. For instance, trying to do everything himself became exhausting. Moreover, a dedicated patient care coordinator changed his conversion numbers dramatically. Undoubtedly, this "Beauty and the Biz" episode is good for any surgeon. Specifically, it is ideal for those who want a solid, reputable practice. Consequently, that practice keeps growing without chaos. P.S. Admittedly, you might be thinking about your own growth, staffing, or succession. Likewise, you might want to better leverage what you have already built. Fortunately, a Practice Performance Audit will help identify the hidden opportunities. Indeed, these opportunities are sitting inside your practice. Private Practice Is Not a Straight Line — the business lessons behind building a boutique plastic surgery practice. First, this week on "Beauty and the Biz," I talk with Dr. James Rough. Indeed, he is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in private practice in Tucson, Arizona. Admittedly, Dr. Rough has an interesting story. After all, he didn't just jump straight into a solo cosmetic practice with everything figured out. Initially, he started at the VA. Next, he built his surgical experience. Then, he joined another practice. Consequently, he learned what worked and what didn't. Eventually, he used those lessons to build his own boutique-style practice. Truly, I appreciated his honesty about the journey. Occasionally, you make a decision that looks good on paper. However, you realize later it wasn't the right long-term fit. Similarly, a difficult partnership still teaches you invaluable lessons. Furthermore, COVID, market shifts, competition or staffing force you to rethink what you are building and why. Thus, in this episode of "Beauty and the Biz," we discuss several topics: For instance, we talk about transitioning from reconstruction to a cosmetic private practice. Also, we cover the pros and cons of joining another surgeon first. Additionally, we explore what he learned from a challenging partnership. Moreover, we discuss why he still values breast reconstruction. Finally, we detail how he built a more concierge, relationship-driven practice. Ultimately, if you are building, rebuilding or rethinking your private practice model, this episode provides a real-world look at what that journey can actually look like. Meanwhile, one of the biggest reasons cosmetic patients become unhappy is because they do not feel understood. Consequently, that is why I wrote my first book, "Your Aesthetic Practice / What Your Patients Are Saying." Naturally, it gives you and your team an inside look at how cosmetic patients really think, feel and make decisions. As a result, you can connect with them faster. Furthermore, you can earn their trust. Ultimately, you can create a better patient experience from consultation through post-op. Fortunately, it is free. Therefore, you simply cover the shipping and handling. Finally, click here to get your copy. 📕 Get Catherine's New Book: Plastic Surgery Practice Pearls 📅 Schedule a Practice Performance Audit ⬇️⬇️⬇️ T Gerald O'Daniel, MD, explains how getting out of your own way can be the greatest benefit to the success of your practice. Getting Out of Your Own Way — How to build a practice with loyal staff, strong systems and fewer distractions. First, Dr. T. Gerald O'Daniel is a double board-certified plastic and facial plastic surgeon. Specifically, he has practiced in Louisville, Kentucky, for 35 years. Indeed, he is known internationally for his face and neck lifting work. However, his business acumen stood out in this "Beauty and the Biz" episode. Particularly, he explained how he built the practice behind his reputation. Ultimately, a great practice is not built on surgical skill alone. Consequently, Dr. O'Daniel openly discussed several vital topics. Initially, he explained why staff longevity matters more than most surgeons realize. Next, he revealed how he uses a CEO and CFO. Additionally, he relies on metrics reviews to stay informed without micromanaging. Furthermore, he discussed why mixing insurance and cosmetic cultures creates major problems. Also, he shared his honest take on private equity. Hence, he explained why the deal is rarely what it looks like. Undoubtedly, my favorite part was his comment about his biggest challenge. Namely, he mentioned getting out of his own way. Truly, that is a pearl every surgeon should hear. Indeed, your practice can only grow so far if every decision must run through you. Similarly, every staff issue and number cannot rely entirely on your input. Therefore, listen to this episode of "Beauty and the Biz" today. Finally, hear how Dr. O'Daniel thinks about culture, control, metrics and growth. P.S. Importantly, keep in mind the surgeon is only half of the conversion equation. Conversely, the other half is your coordinator. Specifically, it matters how well she represents you once the patient leaves the consult room. Consequently, this reality is why I created the Converting Academy. Here, I personally train your coordinator to guide patients to a confident decision. Thus, you can book more surgery and stop letting good leads slip away. Accordingly, reply to this email if you want to talk about it first. https://bit.ly/4emvDPF Enjoy! 📕 Get Catherine's New Book: Plastic Surgery Practice Pearls 📅 Schedule a Practice Performance Audit ⬇️⬇️⬇️ Ruslan Zhuravsky, DO, shares his journey on building an operating suite private practice, with plans on then rebuilding from the ground up. Building, then rebuilding a practice — What it really takes to uproot a successful practice and start again. Specifically, on this week's "Beauty and the Biz," I interviewed Dr. Ruslan Zhuravsky. Previously, this facial plastic surgeon in Miami immigrated from Ukraine at age 6. Subsequently, he grew up in Brooklyn and trained in facial plastics. Furthermore, he built his reputation in New Jersey. Ultimately, he made the bold decision to relocate his practice to Miami. Undeniably, that move was not easy. Admittedly, he had roots, patients and momentum in New Jersey. However, he also knew he ultimately wanted to build his life and his practice in Miami. Consequently, he went for it. Accordingly, in this "Beauty and the Biz" episode, Dr. Z talks about several key topics: First, he discusses starting over in Miami while still needing to pay the bills. Second, he highlights working alongside his wife to build a true family business. Third, he explains why surgical training is only the beginning. Finally, he outlines the difference between dabbling and truly committing. Truly, this is a great episode for any surgeon who wants the freedom of private practice. Moreover, it requires understanding that success demands focus, sacrifice and grit. Additionally, keep in mind that the surgeon is only half the story when patients decide to move forward. Meanwhile, the other half is your patient coordinator. Furthermore, she is representing you on the phone, building trust, answering objections and guiding consultations to booked surgery. Therefore, I created the Converting Academy to personally train your coordinator. Ultimately, she will learn to convert more of your inquiries and consultations into revenue. As always, I'm your host, Catherine Maley, author of "Your Aesthetic Practice – What Your Patients Are Saying." and consultant to plastic surgeons, helping them get more patients and more profits. When the Surgeon Becomes the Bottleneck How this plastic surgeon learned to delegate without losing control. Consequently, my latest "Beauty and the Biz" guest is Dr. Richard Brown, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon and founder of Brown Plastic Surgery in Scottsdale, Arizona. Moreover, Dr. Brown built his solo practice from the ground up after taking over for a retiring surgeon. Additionally, in this episode, he gets very candid about what it really takes to grow. Specifically, he discusses the challenges when you are the surgeon, owner, leader, producer, and visionary. Furthermore, we talked about the business side surgeons were never trained for, which includes several key components. First, we explore why the business side of practice is often the hardest part. Second, we compare the difference between an office manager and a COO. Third, we explain why every visionary surgeon needs a "who" to help execute the "how." Fourth, we share how to step out of daily staff drama without disconnecting from the team. Fifth, we reveal the expensive lesson he learned when he took his eye off the numbers. Ultimately, this is a great episode for any surgeon who wants to grow but knows they cannot keep managing every staff issue, idea, and fire on their own. REMINDER: Obviously, every consult that does not book is lost revenue. Therefore, that is why I created Converting Academy. For instance, I personally train and coach your coordinator one-on-one. Solo Practice to 51,000 Sq. Ft. — in 2.5 Years 3 providers, 16 staff, zero lead conflict. Here's his model. First, my latest "Beauty and the Biz" guest is Dr. Christopher Micallef. Indeed, he is a board-certified plastic surgeon in San Antonio. Furthermore, he has built something truly impressive. Specifically, he grew from a solo practice to a multi-provider aesthetic business. Moreover, he achieved this growth in just a short amount of time. Currently, his multi-provider aesthetic business includes the following elements: First, a facial plastic surgeon joined the team. Second, an internal medicine physician came on board. Third, the clinic offers injectors, lasers and wellness services. Fourth, the practice employs 16 team members and keeps growing. However, what stood out the most was his mindset. Ultimately, Dr. Micallef credits much of his success to his military background. Fundamentally, systems, consistency, accountability and leadership are not optional. Frankly, that discipline clearly shows in his work. Thus, in this "Beauty and the Biz" episode, we discuss the following topics: First, we explore how he scaled quickly without chaos. Next, we uncover why patient experience is his true differentiator instead of price. Then, we review the hiring mistakes he wishes he avoided early on. Meanwhile, we discuss how to get every staff member aligned around the same patient journey. Finally, we explain why consistency in leadership is non-negotiable. Emphatically, he emphasized his focus is equally on systems, staff experience and procedures. Therefore, that is how you prevent growth leaks from happening. Assuredly, if you are building, scaling or trying to create a stronger culture in your practice, this episode is worth your time. Incidentally, the practices winning today are not always the best surgeons. Instead, they are often the best operators. Consequently, I talk about this concept in more detail in my brand-new book. Smarter Growth Model for Surgeons? Why Some Plastic Surgeons Scale Faster (Without Going Solo). Initially, I recorded an insightful episode regarding a "Smarter Growth Model for Surgeons?" Specifically, I conversed with Dr. Nathaniel Villanueva. Currently, he operates as a young board-certified plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. Interestingly, he decided to join an established multi-surgeon group. Consequently, he avoided going straight into a solo practice. Admittedly, he joined a highly renowned clinic. Subsequently, he built his patient base strategically from there. Therefore, here are the main takeaways. First, joining the right practice can accelerate growth faster than working alone. Second, a partnership model reduces risk while creating significant financial upside. Third, specialization inside a group reduces internal competition. Furthermore, a strong leadership mindset keeps surgeon egos in check. Moreover, culture matters more than credentials when adding another surgeon to the team. Finally, staff compensation transparency helps avoid office drama. Also, remember this final thought. Surprisingly, the fastest-growing surgeons usually are not working harder. Rather, they are making better strategic decisions earlier. Additionally, you might want more strategic insights like these. Thus, my new book provides the answers. Notably, "The Plastic Surgery Practice Growth Playbook" pulls together the best podcast pearls. Ultimately, it compiles advice from top-performing surgeons into one practical resource. 📅 Schedule Your Practice Growth Strategy Review 📕 Get Catherine's New Book: Plastic Surgery Practice Pearls ⬇️⬇️⬇️ Why this surgeon "lives lean" as a strategic choice in Beverly Hills with only three employees. Faryan Jalalabadi, MD explains. Why This Surgeon "Lives Lean" in Beverly Hills Consequently, this week's podcast features Dr. Faryan Jalalabadi, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. Furthermore, he trained at Baylor College of Medicine and spent significant time with Dr. Rod Rohrich. Additionally, he completed the elite Marina Aesthetics Fellowship at USC under Dr. Grant Stevens. Currently, he runs a thriving facial aging practice with a tiny staff of only three people. Specifically, here is what stood out from the episode: Moreover, he intentionally runs one of the leanest operations in the competitive Beverly Hills market. Similarly, he focused entirely on facial aging instead of trying to provide every possible procedure. Indeed, his biggest professional regret is not opening his solo practice sooner. Meanwhile, he follows his mentor's advice that your only real competition is yourself. Finally, he explains why not owning a surgery center is a strategic choice rather than a limitation. Therefore, you should listen if you wonder how a younger surgeon competes in a crowded market without massive overhead. Indeed, this episode reveals his unique blueprint for success. P.S. In fact, Dr. Jalalabadi credits his fellowship with teaching him what to avoid in business. Because this kind of insight is vital, I captured similar wisdom from 175 surgeons in "Beauty and the Biz". Therefore, you should pre-order the playbook today to receive four launch bonuses. Enjoy! 📅 Schedule Your Practice Growth Strategy Review 📕 Get Catherine's New Book: Plastic Surgery Practice Pearls ⬇️⬇️⬇️ Suma Maddox, MD, shares her journey into private practice and the difference between being employed and free. The Difference Between Employed… and Free Frankly, most surgeons will not do this, but that is the point. Indeed, most surgeons talk about going out on their own. However, few actually do it. Furthermore, even fewer emulate Dr. Suma Maddox. Specifically, she is a board-certified plastic surgeon in New Orleans. Previously, she spent years as a hospital-employed general surgeon. Consequently, she was locked into a noncompete agreement. Then, she made a definitive decision. Next, she went back into training. Afterward, she started over. Ultimately, she drove 200 miles each way every week. Moreover, she did this for months to secure the surgery cases needed for board certification. Undeniably, that immense effort paid off. Today, she owns her own practice. Additionally, she built a surgery center with two operating rooms. Plus, she rents this space to other surgeons. Furthermore, she will have that loan paid off by November. Truthfully, this success was not luck. Rather, it was the result of thinking like a founder. Surprisingly, she did not ask how to do more surgery. Instead, she asked how to build something she could control. Remarkably, this is the exact pattern I observed across 175 surgeons. Concurrently, I noticed this while writing my book. Unquestionably, the ones who break away and grow share specific traits: First, they protect their autonomy. Second, they build systems around themselves. Third, they create new revenue streams. Finally, they think long-term rather than just focusing on survival. Ultimately, success starts with thinking differently about "The Difference Between Employed… and Free". P.S. Importantly, the shift from surgeon to owner changes everything. Therefore, everything is detailed in my new book, "Plastic Surgery Practice Playbook." Currently, it is available at BeautyAndTheBizBook.com. Enjoy!
