This is Scott Becker with the Becker Business Podcast in the back of Private Equity podcast. Today's discussion is Cleveland sports are on a roll. The Guardians, the Browns and David Staffman. So here's what's going on. The Cleveland Guardians started off having an absolutely horrendous year. Suddenly, they are on fire. They were 15 and a half games back not very long ago. Now, the Cleveland Guardians, which used to be known as the Cleveland Indian, and I won't make a comment on what the name should or shouldn't be, but we'll suffice to say we're using the name the Cleveland Guardians. They are on fire. There's about four or five games left in the season. They, they're chopping it to bit of being in first place against the Detroit Tigers. They were way, way back, 15 games back. Now they're, they're right there. They're, I think, essentially tied with the Tigers and we'll see how they close it out. So that's the, that's the Cleveland Guardians, secondarily is the franchise the Cleveland Browns again. The Browns have become one of franchises over the years, which, you know, I have special affinity, too, because I'm a Chicago Beers fan. And they've also had this horrendous, horrendous take last very long time, haven't really gone far in 20 years, haven't been great team since 1985. Scugger Bear is just horrible. And the Cleveland Browns suffer from a similar fate. I mean, I think since the Bernie Kosar days, they've largely been horrendous and just horrible. But again, they shocked the world this weekend. They beat the Green Bay packers, which were so highly touted as just a great, great team this year, and it showed that they're not that great. And to finish off the trifecta of Cleveland greatness, today was the day of greatness for Dave Staffman. DAVE Staffman, Many people don't know he's an amateur golfer, but a great, great athlete, an Ohio State fan, a dyed in the wool Ohio State fan, a brilliant investor, brilliant parent, you know, just terrific wife, children, everything else. But Bill, don't know this. He's also a very avid golfer who played the nine holes of his life this week and really with great luck, finished out the match. He was playing, hit a ball from 150 yards out, probably would have rolled onto a street nearby us called Edgewood Avenue, but it hit the pin, stopped an inch short of the hole and his competitor had to give him the putt, whether deserved or not, because the reality. You have to give a guy a putt when it's an inch or two away, but the last shot should have ended up in Edgewood Avenue in Highland Park. It's hard to understand how a guy deserves to win that hole and take the pot. Really a remarkable feat. But in all seriousness, Dave Staffman is one of the greatest golfers to come out of that Cleveland area. He is. He is just right behind two of the other great ones of all time, David Burke, Q. And Daniel Borstein. But. But a great, great golfer, a great, great person. Ohio, all that stuff. I mean, I do cheer for Ohio State against Michigan. I was not really chairing for David Staffing today, but give the devil its due. Cleveland Sports is on the rebound between the Cleveland Guardians, the Cleveland Browns coming back and beating Green Bay this week, and David Stafman having one of the greatest victories of all time today. Scott Becker hosts a lively and humorous discussion highlighting a week of unexpected triumphs in Cleveland sports. Focusing on the Cleveland Guardians' playoff chase, the Cleveland Browns' surprise victory, and the personal golfing victory of his friend David Stafman, Scott takes listeners through moments of excitement, wistfulness, and local pride.
The Cleveland Guardians started the season badly and were at one point 15.5 games behind in their division.
Nearing the end of the season with only four or five games remaining, the team is now essentially tied for first with the Detroit Tigers.
Scott points out the extraordinary nature of their resurgence and notes the interesting history around their name change from the Indians to the Guardians.
Notable Quote:
Scott compares the misery of being a lifelong Chicago Bears fan to supporting the Browns, emphasizing the long decades both franchises have suffered.
He highlights that the Browns broke expectations by beating the highly-favored Green Bay Packers over the recent weekend.
This win suggests both instability at the top of the NFL and hope for Cleveland fans.
Notable Quote:
Scott shifts to a playful recounting of Dave Stafman’s outstanding round of golf in Highland Park, giving him exaggerated accolades as one of Cleveland’s greatest (amateur) golfers.
He describes Stafman’s miraculous shot from 150 yards that nearly went astray, saved only by luck when the ball struck the pin and settled an inch from the hole, earning him a conceded putt.
The story is as much a roast as a tribute, buoyed by jovial local rivalry and Scott's acknowledgment of Dave’s athletic skill and character.
