Scott Becker with the Becker Private Equity and Business podcast. Today's discussion is three ways to Judge Leaders to judge business leaders. So here's the deal. I'm going to give you three different ways in which we like to judge business leaders and love your thoughts of course, as well. First, do they deliver results while they're leading the business? So are their profits? Are the revenues, are they hitting the goals they want to hit again? At the end of the day you can talk about everything you want to talk about, but businesses don't that don't produce results, don't stay in business that long. And the leaders don't say leaders that long. So you can't ignore producing results. Second is great leaders build other leaders and build teams of leaders. The worst thing I see in business is the supernova leader, the Firestarter leader, and you need those. But that doesn't build teams around him, stability and strength around him or her. In that case, the business typically only has so much longevity to it, so much stability to it. That's, you know, the second way we judge leaders, how much they're building teams and what they're doing around them. The third way that I look at judging leaders is how well does that business thrive when that leader is no longer there from my perspective, the greatest attribute of a leader is one that thrives and wins after the leader is gone. So like Steve Jobs, a tremendous firestarter. Bill Gates, amazing. Jeff Bezos, amazing what he built at Amazon. But what's really even more impressive about these three leaders is that each of their companies has thrived after they've stepped out of the leadership spot. Of course, in the case of Steve Jobs, it was Steve Jobs passing away. But that to me is about the highest compliment you could pay to a leader that they are more successful after the leader stepped away than they were before it. So again, three core concepts in judging leaders. Does the business thrive when they're there? Have they built additional leaders? Number two and third, does the business thrive after they step away? Thank you for listening to the Becker Private Equity and Business podcast. Thank you very, very much.

In the third episode of the Becker Private Equity & Business Podcast, host Scott Becker delves into the critical evaluation of business leaders. Titled "3 Ways to Judge Business Leaders," the episode offers actionable insights for entrepreneurs, investors, and business enthusiasts aiming to assess leadership effectiveness within organizations.
Scott Becker opens the discussion by emphasizing the fundamental role of tangible outcomes in evaluating business leaders. He asserts that regardless of a leader's vision or charisma, "businesses don't that don't produce results, don't stay in business that long. And the leaders don't say leaders that long." (01:30)
The second criterion Scott Becker presents focuses on a leader’s ability to cultivate leadership within their organization. He critiques the "supernova" or "firestarter" leaders—those who shine brightly but fail to develop others around them. Becker notes, "The worst thing I see in business is the supernova leader, the Firestarter leader, and you need those. But that doesn't build teams around him, stability and strength around him or her." (02:05)
The final evaluation metric Scott Becker discusses is a leader’s legacy—how well the business continues to perform in their absence. He highlights that "the greatest attribute of a leader is one that thrives and wins after the leader is gone." (02:45) Using iconic examples, Becker illustrates how enduring leadership contributes to lasting success.
Scott Becker wraps up the episode by reiterating the three core concepts for judging business leaders:
He concludes, "Does the business thrive when they're there? Have they built additional leaders? And third, does the business thrive after they step away?" (03:10) These questions serve as a comprehensive framework for assessing the effectiveness and impact of business leaders.
