Title: Apple Struggling
Host: Scott Becker
Release Date: June 9, 2025
In this episode of the Becker Private Equity & Business Podcast, host Scott Becker delves into the current challenges facing Apple Inc. amidst its latest Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025. With a focus on Apple's strategic directions and its impact on investor sentiment, Becker provides a comprehensive analysis of the tech giant's position in the competitive landscape.
At the heart of this discussion is Apple's recent Worldwide Developers Conference, which kicked off on June 9, 2025. Becker notes that Apple's presentation failed to excite investors and fans alike due to the absence of significant new hardware releases. Instead, the company concentrated on incremental improvements in its operating systems and advancements in artificial intelligence.
"Apple's not looking at any real new watches, rather improvements in operating systems, improvements of AI improvements, and a little bit more. That's all disappointing for investors."
— Scott Becker [00:27]
This cautious approach marks a departure from Apple's tradition of unveiling groundbreaking products, potentially signaling a shift in the company's innovation strategy.
Becker highlights that Apple's stock has declined by approximately 20% this year, a stark contrast to the upward trajectories of its major rivals. Specifically, Microsoft and Nvidia have continued to escalate their market capitalizations, further widening the gap between themselves and Apple.
"Apple this year is down about 20%. Its two biggest market cap rivals, Microsoft and Nvidia, continue to grow and grow market cap."
— Scott Becker [00:50]
Despite robust growth in Apple's services sector, the company is experiencing slowing growth across other key product lines, most notably the iPhone, which has historically been a cornerstone of Apple's revenue stream.
While Apple’s services division is thriving, contributing positively to the company's overall financial health, the deceleration in hardware sales poses significant concerns. The iPhone, once unparalleled in its market dominance, is now facing increased competition and market saturation.
"Apple has got good growth in its services area, but it's having a slowing growth in all of its other product lines, including the iPhone, which is sort of the backbone of really everything."
— Scott Becker [01:15]
This dichotomy underscores the challenges Apple faces in maintaining its traditional strengths while navigating a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Becker underscores the intensifying "market cap wars," where Apple appears to be lagging behind giants like Nvidia and Microsoft. This trend raises questions about Apple's future strategies and its ability to reclaim its former dominance in both innovation and market leadership.
"Apple falling behind Nvidia and Microsoft in the market cap wars."
— Scott Becker [01:30]
The host posits that the outcomes of WWDC 2025 could play a crucial role in determining whether Apple can pivot effectively or if it will continue to lose ground to its more aggressive competitors.
In wrapping up the episode, Scott Becker emphasizes the uncertainty surrounding Apple's trajectory. With declining stock performance and slowing growth in critical product segments, the tech titan's future hinges on its ability to innovate and adapt amidst fierce competition. As WWDC 2025 progresses, all eyes will be on Apple to see whether it can reverse its fortunes and sustain its legacy as a market leader.
"We'll see how this plays out again. Apple has its WWDC starting today. We'll see how it go."
