This is Scott Becker with the Becker Private Equity and Business Podcast. Today's discussion is double down on your core role in business and keep your eyes open. So one of the things we talk about is, and I particularly see this with young career risk and just gave a lecture to people that are a lecture, an interview, a discussion to people that are young leaders. And one of the things I see so often in young leaders is this bifurcated situation. Just as a young leader, brilliance person at Kauffman hall who spent at the same place for seven years and growing and thriving and doing fantastic, then I see so many young leaders that are bopping and jumping from place to place. I'm a huge fan of the first one. The person that doubles down on what they're doing, does a fantastic job and keeps their eyes open and can connect dots. So what I worry about is the young professional that spends half their time on the Rolodex trying to find the next job versus really looking at doing fantastic at what they do. And I'm a believer that if you do great at what you do, more and more opportunities are likely to open up for you. So we're a huge believer in this concept of do fantastic at what you do. Keep your eyes open, connect dots, maintain relationships, but don't ever mistake the concept that you want to spend 89% of your effort to doing fantastic work at what you're doing and doing your core job exceptionally well. Then both more opportunities come to you, your mind is engaged, you see more opportunities. I think there's just so many benefits to that approach to business, to jobs, to life. It's doubled on your core while keeping your eyes open and connecting dots. Thank you for listening to the Becker Private Equity and Business Podcast.

Becker Private Equity & Business Podcast Summary
Episode: Double Down on Your Core Role & Keep Your Eyes Open
Host: Scott Becker
Release Date: May 14, 2025
In this insightful episode of the Becker Private Equity & Business Podcast, host Scott Becker delves into the importance of focusing on one’s core role while remaining vigilant for new opportunities. The discussion centers around career strategies for young professionals and leaders, emphasizing the value of dedication and strategic vision in fostering long-term success.
Scott Becker opens the conversation by highlighting a common dilemma faced by young leaders and professionals: the choice between specializing deeply in their current role versus frequently seeking new opportunities. He states:
“I’m a huge fan of the first one. The person that doubles down on what they’re doing, does a fantastic job and keeps their eyes open and can connect dots.”
(00:30)
Becker advocates for the benefits of remaining committed to one’s role, suggesting that excellence in a specific area naturally leads to greater opportunities. He emphasizes that by excelling in their current position, individuals are more likely to attract new prospects and advancements without the need to constantly search for them.
A significant portion of the discussion is dedicated to observing the behavior of young leaders in various professional settings. Becker notes a trend where some young professionals remain at one organization for extended periods, thriving and making substantial contributions. In contrast, others frequently transition between roles or companies. He remarks:
“I see so many young leaders that are bopping and jumping from place to place. I’m a huge fan of the first one.”
(00:45)
Becker expresses concern over the latter group, suggesting that their focus on job-hunting detracts from their ability to perform exceptionally in their current roles. He posits that this scattered approach may hinder their professional growth and limit the emergence of new opportunities.
Delving deeper, Becker outlines the advantages of dedicating the majority of one’s efforts to excelling in their current role. He advises allocating approximately 89% of one’s effort to outstanding performance in their primary responsibilities. This focused approach, according to Becker, not only enhances job performance but also keeps the mind engaged and receptive to new ideas and opportunities.
“If you do great at what you do, more and more opportunities are likely to open up for you.”
(01:15)
Becker encourages maintaining strong relationships and continuously connecting the dots across different aspects of the business landscape. This strategy, he believes, fosters a conducive environment for professional growth and innovation.
In wrapping up, Scott Becker reinforces the central theme of the episode: the importance of committing to one’s core role while maintaining an openness to emerging opportunities. He underscores that this balanced approach—focused excellence combined with strategic awareness—can lead to sustained success in both business and personal career trajectories.
“There’s just so many benefits to that approach to business, to jobs, to life. It’s doubled on your core while keeping your eyes open and connecting dots.”
(01:50)
Becker concludes by encouraging listeners to adopt this mindset, suggesting that it can significantly enhance their professional journeys and lead to meaningful achievements.
