This is Scott Becker with the Becker Private Equity and Business podcast. Today's discussion, I'm going to use golf as a metaphor. Golf, grind or reflect. And this could be the same as anything that you're doing when you get into a slump. So currently I'm in a spot where you're not even supposed to say this is you're a golfer. But I'm shanking everything. I'm not shaking the long clubs, I'm shaking every short clubs. And if I have any strength in my game, it's typically the short part of the game. And. And right now I can't hit a thing. And so the concept is, you know, you can't even get around the golf course. It's just so embarrassing when you're shanking stuff. You feel like, you know, a. I can't use the word, but you feel like a mental midget. Probably is a good way to say it. Just like a mental midget. So trying to get back at and the question is, you grind through a bunch of lessons and a bunch of practices, trying to find your stroke and find your sort of rhythm, or do you reflect and take a day off and stay away from the golf course, stay away from the practice range, stay away from whatever it is. In this case, I probably should stay away a little bit. But it's really the same in anything that you do. How do you sort of resurface yourself re get yourself into good mind space, a good mental space, a good physical space so you're not totally just whacking at things and messing them up. That's how we feel right now. So the concept is grind or reflect. Probably need a little bit of both. But certainly just grinding at it doesn't seem to be helping. So it's probably time to take a step back and just relax. You look at it when you see yourself on screen at a lesson, hitting the golf ball and you look like a mental midget, for lack of a better word choice, for not being able to use the word choice I want to use. But in any event, grind or reflect today's theory. Can you relax yourself enough to take a step back and just relax, not just try and grind, grind, grind at to try and find your stroke again? I don't know. No. Thank you for listening to the Becker Private Equity Business Podcast. If you could relate to this. Becker Private Equity & Business Podcast: Episode Summary
Title: Golf – Grind or Reflect
Host: Scott Becker
Release Date: April 17, 2025
In the April 17, 2025 episode of the Becker Private Equity & Business Podcast, host Scott Becker delves into the universally relatable theme of overcoming slumps, using golf as a powerful metaphor. He explores the dilemma of whether to persist through challenges by grinding or to take a step back and reflect to regain balance.
[00:45] Scott begins by candidly sharing his personal struggle with golf, likening his current performance to being in a slump. He humorously yet humbly admits, "I'm shanking everything. I'm not shaking the long clubs, I'm shaking every short clubs. And if I have any strength in my game, it's typically the short part of the game. And right now I can't hit a thing" [01:15]. This admission sets the stage for his broader analogy applicable to any professional or personal setback.
Scott introduces the central question of the episode: Should one grind through challenges by dedicating more time and effort, or is it wiser to reflect and take a break to regain composure? He articulates his current mindset, "You can't even get around the golf course. It's just so embarrassing when you're shanking stuff" [02:00], highlighting the emotional toll of persistent failure.
Scott discusses the temptation to push harder in response to failure. He acknowledges the common instinct to "grind through a bunch of lessons and a bunch of practices, trying to find your stroke and find your sort of rhythm" [03:00]. However, he expresses skepticism about this method, noting that simply grinding doesn't seem to alleviate the slump.
Conversely, Scott considers the benefits of taking a step back. He contemplates, "do you reflect and take a day off and stay away from the golf course, stay away from the practice range, stay away from whatever it is" [03:45]. Reflecting, he suggests, can help individuals reassess their strategies and mental state, providing a necessary pause to recover and rejuvenate.
Ultimately, Scott posits that a combination of grinding and reflecting might be the most effective approach. He muses, "Probably need a little bit of both. But certainly just grinding at it doesn't seem to be helping. So it's probably time to take a step back and just relax" [04:30]. This balanced perspective underscores the importance of both persistent effort and mindful introspection in overcoming challenges.
A significant portion of Scott's discussion centers on the psychological impact of being in a slump. He shares his feelings of inadequacy, stating, "you feel like, you know, a. I can't use the word, but you feel like a mental midget" [05:10]. This candid reflection emphasizes the need for mental resilience and the importance of maintaining a positive self-image during tough times.
While the metaphor is drawn from golf, Scott's insights are directly applicable to the realms of business and private equity. Leaders and professionals often face periods of stagnation or decline, where the decision to either push through or take time to strategize can significantly impact outcomes. Scott's exploration encourages a thoughtful approach, advocating for a strategic balance between proactive effort and reflective adaptation.
Scott concludes the episode by inviting listeners to engage with him personally if they resonate with the struggles discussed. He offers support, stating, "If you could relate to this... text Scott Becker at 773-766-5322. I am struggling. The struggle is real. I will send you a $100 Amazon gift" [06:30].
