This is Scott Becker with the Becker Business and the Becker Private Equity Podcast. Today's discussion is a simple one. It start every day with a list. So the concept is that I have many days where I start today with intentionality and a list of, here's what I want to get done today, here's what's on my calendar, here's what I need to do, here's what's important here, what's not. There are other days, and today, well, this will come out tomorrow. But today has been a perfect example of one of those other days. And I feel bad for the people that I work with on those days because they see it up front and personal and close. But it's one of those days where I didn't start the day with the list. I got out of the house a little bit later than I expected to. I was able to get the first thing I had to do, which is something Rebecca's healthcare done and done well early this morning. But I didn't have clarity about the rest of the day and what I needed to accomplish. And that leads to a situation where the day becomes an extremely frenzied and hurried day. I'm trying to interview somebody on one spot for a job as we're trying to build a sales team at Becker Business. I'm trying to do a number of podcasts for mostly Becker's Healthcare. I show up to a couple of the podcast a few minutes late. My producer is like, what is wrong with you? I'm frazzled during one of the interviews we have to do where I'm interviewing a person. And I'm so frazzled 13 other things on my list that I'm not able to pay attention as well as I should be able to pay attention. And this goes on and on throughout the course of the day, largely because I didn't make the effort to, early on in the day, put together a list of what I have to do that day. So today's lesson, and this is true of people that have the level of sort of attention deficit disorder and caffeine intake that I have, but it's really true for everybody. You really want to start the day with intentionality and clarity about what you're trying to accomplish versus jumping from thing to thing with an amount of frazzlement and frazzled energy that's unhealthy for anybody. I remember Jamie Dimon has this great YouTube speech, this great take where he talks about, the world could be frantic or frenzied, but what you don't have control over the world. What you have is control over you. And so the goal is to make yourself less frantic and more frenetic and more focused and more intentional. And that goes to starting the day with a list versus just frazzledly running throughout the day, which is one of those days I've had in large part today. Thank you for listening to the Becker Business Podcast, the Becker Private Equity Podcast. We hope this is helpful to somebody. I've been struggling, but we hope that you. You benefit from my errors. Thank you for listening.
Becker Private Equity & Business Podcast: Detailed Summary
Episode Title: Start Every Day with a List 7-30-25
Host: Scott Becker
Release Date: July 30, 2025
In this episode of the Becker Private Equity & Business Podcast, host Scott Becker delves into the pivotal habit of beginning each day with a structured to-do list. Drawing from personal experiences, Scott underscores the significance of intentionality and planning in fostering productivity and reducing daily chaos.
Scott begins by highlighting his usual practice of starting the day with a comprehensive list:
"I start every day with intentionality and a list of, here's what I want to get done today, here's what's on my calendar, here's what I need to do, here's what's important here, what's not." (01:15)
This routine allows him to prioritize tasks, allocate time effectively, and maintain clarity throughout the day. By outlining his objectives, Scott ensures that he remains focused and aligned with his goals.
Contrasting his typical approach, Scott shares an anecdote about a particularly hectic day when he neglected to prepare his list:
"I didn't start the day with the list. I got out of the house a little bit later than I expected to. I was able to get the first thing I had to do... but I didn't have clarity about the rest of the day and what I needed to accomplish." (02:30)
The absence of a structured plan led to a cascade of challenges:
Punctuality Issues: Scott arrived late to podcast recordings, causing frustration among his team.
"My producer is like, what is wrong with you? I'm frazzled during one of the interviews we have to do..." (03:10)
Reduced Focus: Juggling multiple tasks without a clear roadmap resulted in diminished attention during interviews and other critical activities.
"...I'm trying to interview somebody on one spot... I'm trying to do a number of podcasts for mostly Becker's Healthcare..." (03:50)
Increased Stress: The day became frenetic and hurried, illustrating how the lack of planning can escalate stress levels.
Reflecting on this experience, Scott emphasizes a universal truth:
"You really want to start the day with intentionality and clarity about what you're trying to accomplish versus jumping from thing to thing with an amount of frazzlement..." (05:00)
He relates this to broader principles of self-control and focus, referencing Jamie Dimon's insightful speech:
"Jamie Dimon has this great YouTube speech... what you have is control over you. And so the goal is to make yourself less frantic and more focused and more intentional." (06:20)
Scott advocates for transforming frenzied energy into purposeful action through meticulous planning and prioritization.
While Scott narrates his personal struggles, he acknowledges that this lesson transcends individual experiences:
"This is true of people that have the level of sort of attention deficit disorder and caffeine intake that I have, but it's really true for everybody." (07:15)
By adopting a daily list, professionals across various fields can enhance their efficiency, reduce stress, and achieve their objectives more consistently.
Scott wraps up the episode with a candid reflection on his challenges and a hopeful message for listeners:
"I've been struggling, but we hope that you benefit from my errors." (09:00)
He encourages his audience to embrace the practice of daily planning, assuring them that the benefits outweigh the initial effort required to establish this habit.
Start with a List: Initiating the day with a clear to-do list fosters intentional action and prioritization.
Avoiding Frazzlement: Planning mitigates the risk of a chaotic and stressful day, enhancing overall productivity.
Self-Control is Key: Maintaining control over one's schedule and tasks is crucial in a frenzied world.
Universal Applicability: The practice of daily planning is beneficial for professionals regardless of their specific challenges.
