On Tuesday, July 22, just weeks after he had performed Wednesday, what would absolutely be his final show with Black Sabbath in Birmingham, England, I was joined by the professor of rock, Adam Reeder to talk about the impact of this news and what a great loss it is for all us fans, music fans, fans of the TV show, fans of Ozzy, fans of Black Sabbath, to hear this news that Ozzy, the Prince of Darkness, was gone. Hey, Adam, how are you?

Good, how you doing?

I'm processing this information, as I'm sure you are. It's tough.

[Adam Reeder]

Yeah, I agree.

[Janda]

You know, when we got this news today about Ozzy Osbourne passing away, it's something that we've thought about many times over the past few years as fans. Right. Because he hasn't been in the best of health. You know, he's suffered from Parkinson's and then all of the surgeries and the falls and everything else. But there's something about Ozzy that you think is eternal in some way, you know?

[Adam Reeder]

Yeah. Immortal, right. Absolutely. Probably more than. Probably more than anybody besides Keith Richards, you know.

[Janda]

Right. I mean, there's some part of me, I think, for all of us fans that just thought he was kind of gonna hang around forever, but that's not what we get here on this earth. So. Yeah, I've been thinking a lot about the Last Blast, the reunion concert and that footage and how happy he seemed to be up there and what a great last gift that was for us, you know, even those of us who couldn't be there but could, you know, watch the stream.

[Adam Reeder]

Yeah. The performances he got. I mean, not only did he get to perform with Sabbath and give us that. But he also got to perform his solo songs, including Mama, I'm Coming Home, which I think will be the lasting memory for me at least of his last performance. To me, that's the one I'll go back to.

[Janda]

Mama, I'm Coming home.

[Adam Reeder]

But, you know, the thought came to me that he and Randy are having a great reunion on the other side.

[Janda]

Oh, what a great thing to say. That's an amazing, amazing thing to point out. Absolutely. They were so close and he was so important to him. And yeah, they are absolutely reunited right now. That's probably the best thing that I've heard since I got this news. To have that thought in my head that he's back with Randy Rhodes again just really makes me feel much better. So I really appreciate that.

[Adam Reeder]

I believe in rock and roll heaven. And in rock and roll heaven, there's a hell of a concert reunion, a reunion happening because those two, I mean, it's incredible. Sabbath, you know, Tony Iommi and Ozzy in that band. Just as incredible was the relationship that he had with Randy.

And the music that they made together, that they just had a special bond. And that bond created incredible music that is truly immortal. Ozzy really is immortal. Even if he's not with us on this side, his music is immortal. And I think we live in a time where I don't want to be the old guy saying, get off my lawn, but I don't know that we'll ever see somebody like Ozzy Osbourne again.

[Janda]

No way.

[Adam Reeder]

It was just when Black Sabbath released that first album, that was. There are only moments like that that happened a few times in a generation. You know, Nirvana smells like team spirit blowing everything away. Black Sabbath was absolutely that. When they came out with that, followed up with the Second, nobody had ever heard anything like that, ever. It blew people's minds. It scared the hell out of parents, it made teenagers gleeful. You know, it's just. It was an incredible, just incredible.

[Janda]

I couldn't agree more. And that is so important. It made parents afraid and it made teenagers happy. And it has done that since to literally every generation since then. You know, those first like four Black Sabbath records, you know, will continue, I think forever. To get that kind of teenage fan and give them that feeling of I'm holding something dangerous, I'm listening to something that is not like other stuff and, and I. And I'm going to embrace it and I relate to it. You know, it's. It's teenage rebellion, you know, in musical form.

[Adam Reeder]

One of the coolest moments, One of the coolest moments of my life. And you know, it's a memory that I have that I've talked about it before, but I was out. My dad was a painting contractor. He raised me on rock and roll. I talk about him a lot. The bond that we had because we didn't get along on many things, but rock and roll was the bond that we had. He told me all the stories beyond the songs and it's why I'm doing what I'm doing now. But when I found an eight track that he had of both Paranoid and Sabbath, the debut album, the coolness factor of my dad went through the roof. I could not believe that my dad had eight tracks of Black Sabbath.

[Janda]

And you never forget those moments when you first hear those records too, you know, and what a powerful memory to have. You know, I've just been sitting here thinking about how generational Ozzy is and how he was a full on grandfather well into his grandfatherly years. But here he is still to the very bitter end, going out there, the Prince of Darkness and giving us something to entertain us. That's what I think. At the end of the day he was a consummate entertainer. And if you dig a little bit to the music, then you realize what a huge Beatles fan Ozzy Osbourne was and how that so important in, in the making of the music and having it be so relatable because it all still fell back on those melodies and those hooks. Even if they were singing about, you know, iron men coming at you from, you know, the core of the earth or whatever, it didn't really matter because the music was that good.

[Adam Reeder]

I mean, how many, you think about it, how many, how many kids draw Oz Zy on their knuckles? I mean that was a thing. I don't. That was a thing that you guys did. But we did that all the time.

[Janda]

Absolutely.

[Adam Reeder]

I was in grades, grade school. Ozzy, you know, put it on our fist raise our fist, the Oz man, you know, I mean, there's just again, there's never going to be another rock star like him. There's never going to be another icon of music like him. He is in a category all his own. And geez, just thank God that we had him all the time. That we did. And incredible music that we have to. Again, the music's immortal. And gosh, what a legend. Legend is thrown out a lot. Legend is thrown out a lot. I admit I use it probably too often, but Ozzy Osbourne is a one legend, no question.
