Yes, the host was maybe not what we are expecting or hoping for, but because my gorgeous co host, Sydney LaRue texts me hours before the event. She's being a bit secretive. She got to stay downtown because we had the US National Team Players association ball the night before. That was a whole nother thing.

Sid didn't have the perfect dress for either of these events, but she showed up in a beautiful one for the players ball. And then she told me, she said, this is the most beautiful dress I've ever seen. I can't send you a photo. Don't go too early to the ESPYs because it's hot outside and you don't want to be waiting around. See you soon. Last I heard from her. So I am at the red carpet. We were at the end. It was me, Katie Zelum and Alana Kennedy. We barely got our photos taken. It was a mad rush and people are coming. They start closing the gate. They start actually physically rolling up this red carpet. You know who hasn't showed up yet?

Laila. What happens? There's not being too Early. And then there's. Missing the entire red carpet.

I missed two entire red carpets. I have no photos of the SBS or the US Women's National Team players ball. I missed out on the 2015 super cool thing. And everyone was like, where the fuck are you? And I'm like, yes.

Honored the players 10 year anniversary of the US winning the 2015 Women's World Cup. The players who were present all went on stage. Who wasn't there? Sydney Larue. I'm just. I'm still not actually quite sure what, what happened those days. Like, I know you are sure, but.

Like, I'm sad because I wanted the. I wanted the red carpet photos because the dresses were bomb. But where were you? I was just in my room and I lost track of time. And then I was like, oh, we'll just leave at this time. And then I didn't even take into account traffic. And then I came there and I was like, oh, they're like, no, no, no, the show's about to start. And I was like, great, so I'm gonna wear that dress next year. Because no one saw it and it was really pretty.

Was it expensive?

We don't have to talk about. Right. We don't have to talk about that. It was. I got it from secondhand.

Okay. So anyways, we had a really good time when I came and then we still wanted to take a picture, but I hadn't eaten because I was so hungry and I was just scarfing this.

So I didn't see Sid. I'm worried. I'm at the end and they're forcing physically saying, you need to go. The show is starting, you need to go. And I'm looking and I hear our, our PR people. Like, Sydney's still on her way.

We just got a message from Sydney and they're, they're, they're shutting the gates.

So I don't even know if she makes it. And then Sid isn't sitting with, like, the Muggles, who are up in the back. She is vip, front row. Which I find out when they start doing the Snapchat filter on people, like between TV segments. And there she is with a. I think it was like, first crying and then like, the man.

And then I was the man.

But I was like, you know what? She looks hot and she's here. Didn't see the dress.

But, yeah, no one saw the dress. You'll see it next year. On time. Will you? Probably not. Probably not. I have a really hard time with, like, time. What is it? Time perception?

You know, there was a couple people that I saw that I was so excited to see. Buster Rhymes was one of the performers. And we were in, like, the same little section, and so I was like, I fucking loved Pimp My Ride.

We're very lucky that Sid announces what she's going to do before she does anything, because Sid is going on and on about how much she liked Pimp My Ride. She's explaining the show to our friends.

Explain the whole thing. Who was next to me as. As Busta Ryan?

Our young friends, our foreign friends.

And I'm like, it's just so funny. It was, like, so. It was absolutely chaotic because it would be, like, you know, be, like, a really sad story of, like, someone dying in, like, fire, and then they're like, let's put a flame in the back. You know, it's, like, so unhinged that now it's funny. But at the time, we thought, like, oh, that's, like, super meaningful. But now you're like, okay, that's a little crazy.

It is. It's traumatizing. People think that, like, PKS are so easy. They're not.

[Sydney LaRue]

Yeah, they're hard.

I mean, limited. We all know this. We all know this. It's the worst because at any given time, anyone can win. Like, even if you had 42 shots to zero and somehow you tied, the other team will win.

Yeah. You just never want to get there. You don't want to put it down, too. Like, especially at the end. Like, the us, like, we were good at them. I would take us every time, but I would, like, never want to be there.

We. We've been around a while and I. I just wanted to hear from you, like, how it feels you're going to the final, Seeing the coverage and the excitement with the All Star Game, with the Euros. How different is it? How exciting is it? Give people some perspective from where we've been to where we are now.

To be honest, it's like, so emotional and so amazing. And there's also a part of me that's like, I'm so mad.

[Megan Rapinoe]

We're all a little bitter, for sure.

[Sydney LaRue]

It's all like. It's like jealousy, which is a normal emotion, but it's like, I just. I just would have loved to, like, be in this era. Yeah, it's just incredible. I was thinking when we got back here after, you know, the All Star Game and the Euros are going on and it's incredible. And just every time any, you know, women's sports event happens, it breaks every record, whatever. And it's always like, yeah, we're here, we're up, or whatever. And it's like, we did it. Like, we took it, we won it, we're doing it. Like it's it. Now we're in the era where it's just, like, gonna get really, like, what it deserves in terms of funding and investment and like, all the money necessary because, like, the fans are already there. The fandom is already there. All of us have been doing it for 100 years. The fans have been doing it for 100 years. And it's just like, so incredible to see it given the platform it has always deserved. Like, I felt like being at WNBA All Star, it was like the platform was finally built big enough.

To, like, house the players in their full selves. And obviously it's like growing, like, whether it was just like the stud buds or all the shows or the. Or the, you know, the three point whatever it was. And I feel the same way about the Euros. Like, the games have basically, like, all been sold out. The product on the field has been absolutely, like, unbelievable. And so it's just really, honestly, validating. Validating is one way to say it. I'm petty, so I'm going to be like, I fucking told you so. We told you so. We told you so. We told you so. But it's, like, it's so validating, and I just am, like, so happy for all of these players that are getting to be in this era and play in this era and, like, for all of us that just have dedicated our lives to it and, like, our creativity, even what you guys are doing, what we're doing off the field, what so many of us are doing, like, we love it here, and it's, like, finally able to give us the platform to really, like, house us all in our full selves. And so it's just incredible to see a really special time. Yeah, I mean, same. I think I used to joke, like, five, 10 years ago because I was, as a player, a part in CVA negotiations, even though now I'm on the other side, so, you know, we can't talk.

[Megan Rapinoe]

I see. But I remember, Yeah, I remember, like, legit saying, like, a lot of what Megan just said. Like, believe us, we're trying to tell you something like, this needs to grow. We just need this. We just need that. So, yeah, there is a lot of, like, I told you so, but in those CBA negotiations, I remember I would say things like, you know, I just hope that in five, 10 years, I'm like that older player who they interview, and I'm like, well, I wasn't making a million dollars back when I played. I'm like, that petty, like, fucking mad older player. Like, I didn't get to charter planes. And I was. I was kind of kidding because I was kind of just trying to make the point that I hope all of this work leads to a place where the players do get paid their worth and all the good things. And, you know, I just didn't expect it to happen this fast.

So here we are. We're all that petty, older player, but it's also, like, so incredible, and it makes me feel so proud. Of course I would love to be playing in it, but this is just it. This is when Nancy Bird and Herschel bird met was 1980. You know, it wasn't 1985 or 1990 or so on. So it is what it is, and it's so great to still be a part of it in ways and get to experience it ways. And I think ultimately it's a big, fat I told you so. And that's the best part.

Oh, interesting. I mean, for me, really important. I played, I think, just to, like, to grow and, like, become who I was and get out of a. A small town and see, like, a different part of the world and a different way of being. My team was amazing. I feel like we're really successful. Successful. I feel like I, like, grew into myself as a player there, and it was, like, the best place at that time.

Yeah, Portland was really successful until UCLA came to town. Yeah. As a freshman.

And Stanford as a freshman.

Yeah, as a freshman. Yeah. Because the national championship that I have was nasty.

Yeah, I think that was. That was before my time.

That was before. That was before your time. That was before your time. But, yeah, it was. It was important because it was like, gave me the, like, place to, like, not be the best player. Obviously, when you're in high school, when you're on your club team, you are. And then I. Clara was like, our forward, and I was like, well, that's what grade is. Like, that's the. That's the level now. Yeah. Super important for me. I mean, I don't know if you're talking about basketball, but.

No, I'm talking about, like, across the board. We talked about this last week, and I would never give up my college experience for anything.

I love absolutely not everything from, like, a person, a player, the growth. It's like the foundation is set.

And it's like, it's hard for these young players to just come in and be a professional where you have to show up and take care of your body and not make mistakes. And know the scouting report and know that, like. And it's. It's like, if you don't perform, you don't play. That's the game. So then it's like, how do you develop when you're not really good enough or mature enough to play quite yet? And, like, what's the. What's the kind of in between?

Describe one of the soccer brawls that I experienced with my daughter's team. The game was, you know, it was intense. Some girls had been talking, you know, smack to each other, and then all of a sudden, one girl pulls the other girl's hair down. Those girls are actually fist fighting. And some of the team, you know, the girls got into it, too. Then half of each of the parents from both teams go into the field. They have verbal brawl and even physical brawl. And eventually the police had to be called. Both teams were fined and half of the team, of my daughter's team, the other team, were suspended. In all my years of soccer with both my son and my daughter, I have never seen this happen where the girls got into a physical and verbal altercation on both teams. And then the parents went in. It was amen.

The girl got a red card and celebrated getting a hundred dollars. This is the parents fault to me. Like, kids are only going to do this if parents like, this doesn't just come from nowhere.

That's tough. It's tough because it's always those parents who are so intense and so crazy that their kids never do anything because they can't stand you. That's. That's what it is. Because you push your kids, you take it way more seriously than they do. And you've completely ruined their fun. And because you can't do it, you're putting all this on your kid, and your kid will resent you. I think we've both seen that. Yeah. Many times. But if. I mean, I'm talking about my family and my family only if that was me and I was a kid and I heard that, or my mom heard that, you don't want to be a part of that. You don't want to be a part of that.
