Savvy King
I am back full time with Angel City. Yeah. Continuing my rehab here, which has been such a blessing to be back and be able to be on the field again doing my individual training. But, you know, the goal is to be back.
Hello.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
What? Welcome back to another episode of bffr. As always, make sure you're following FFR show on all the socials and hit that subscribe button. You can find the BFFR show wherever you get your podcasts. We have a really special episode today with Angel City's own Savvy King. Sid and I had the chance to sit down with her way back in the beginning of May, before a lot happened. And now we're excited to finally share some updates and release that interview. So check it out. Okay. Welcome to bffr. Unbeknownst to everyone except you, me, and Sid, we actually had Savion as our first ever guest on the BFFR show. This was in early May, and a couple days later, there was a medical emergency and you had heart surgery, so we didn't release the episode. But we're doing it. Not now. We're doing it now. But of course, we couldn't do that without providing a little update on your life. Post heart surgery, graduated from cardiac therapy.
Savvy King
Yep.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
And back on the field. Savvy King, how are you feeling?
Savvy King
So good. I'm just so happy to be back. It's been a little bit of a crazy journey the last couple months, but. But things are going really great, progressing really well. It was three months of cardiac therapy, three days a week for 12 weeks.
So that was.
That was a journey in itself, but it was just, you know, every day being able to just know that I was going to be able to come back out on the field was my motivation and be around you. And all the teammate, all my teammates was definitely such a big help and, you know, motivating me to get through all that and then obviously having my. My family around as well. But now I'm back full time with Angel City. Continuing. Yeah, continuing my rehab here, which has been such a blessing to be back and be able to be on the field again doing my individual training. But, you know, the goal is to be back.
Hey, hey, hey.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
You're training with somebody else. Who have you been out there with?
Savvy King
Claire Emsley is my training partner.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Plus, you have, like, one and a.
Savvy King
Half, three of us.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yep.
Savvy King
So it's been great. We've, you know, we have very different, you know, injuries, I guess, but, like, works out that we're able to train together, because I think any other RTP would be not the same.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah.
Savvy King
Training. So we've been training together. It's been really great. So it's going to be Claire and Savvy 2.0 on the field next season. So that's really exciting. But it's just great to have a training partner, honestly, and to be able to be back out at practice, get some tan again. And we've been out outside in the wild because everything was inside, but it's just good to be back here.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Oh, my gosh. Well, great. When you. After you had surgery, you were not allowed to drive in the beginning. We couldn't. We couldn't visit you. Like, you had to be really careful. What has kind of been the hardest part? Obviously you don't remember too much from what happened on the field, but coming back, like, waking up from surgery and between then and now, what was kind of. Was it like that loss of independence? Was it just you wanted to be on the field so badly? Like, what was. What were some of the hardest challenges?
Savvy King
I think, honestly, you hit both of those. Not. Not having the independence was really hard. There was a. Like, after the surgery, when I got released to go home, like, I couldn't drive. I couldn't. I could barely, like, rol my bed. I had to sleep, like, with my. Like this, and I had to have a pillow, and I couldn't really walk that fast or that well. It took. I had to, like, re. Walk again to. To get used to it. But, like, the independence was hard. And like, soccer and, like, working out is, like, my outlet. So just having that.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Oh, don't I know.
Savvy King
It was so, so difficult and just knowing that, like, I just had to be patient and that it was like I just had to trust in the process and know that it was coming. But it did take a couple of months for me to get to the point where I was able to deal more strenuous stuff. So that was definitely probably the hardest part. But I think just processing everything ultimately was probably the biggest thing. I mean, waking up from surgery, I had no idea what happened, no idea where I was, no idea what was going on. And, like, people, like, my mom was telling me like the nurses were telling me, and I just, like, wasn't believing it, even though I was like. Like in the hospital. Yeah, like, I had, like, tubes and all that, but, like, I wasn't processing what happened was until I got my phone and it was exposed.
Oh, my God.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
How many. How many messages?
Savvy King
Probably thousands. Thousands and thousands. It was a lot. It was. I just, like, I looked at it, and I was like, oh, so. So something could happen. And I, like, they took my phone, and I was like, all right. So I wasn't in contact with anyone for a really long time, but just knowing that, like, so many people were there and, like, so many people that hit a lot of people was the hardest part. And, like, just obviously for a while, it was, like, kept a little bit more close to home. So, like, people weren't really aware of, like, the progress or, like, how I was actually doing. Yeah, I wasn't, like, in a place to be able to say anything. So I think it started to get better once it was, like, more publicized and, like, I was able to kind of get my phone back, you know, post that I was doing okay. That really made me feel, like, a lot better. But it was six weeks of no driving and nothing. I had to be very, very careful. But after that, since then, it's been a lot better. But it's nice living at home and having my parents able to help me because I was. I needed. I needed to so.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Well, you are so loved and adored, and we do talk about your family in the episode, but I just. Seeing your moms, your family, the support you had, how strong they were. And I think having them be strong helped all of us, you know, who saw it happen and are so worried about you. They've come into the facility and just what is. How do you feel about your moms? I mean, they're. Did you know they were that strong? Did you know. Did you see a different side of them?
Savvy King
I definitely saw a different side of them. I knew that they were strong, but that was. I mean, I couldn't imagine it. Being a parent and having to watch your kid go through that. I mean, my mom, Kim, was actually in the ambulance with me when all of that was going on, and they could not imagine, because I remember some parts of. Of being in ambulance, and, like, I just couldn't imagine her just. I mean, you're not really able to do anything. You're just kind of trusting in the.
Help that I had.
But I just couldn't imagine being there. But I'm glad that it was at the game and they were at the game, because I could not. They would have been on the first flight. I don't know.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah.
Savvy King
Somehow got a private jet or something and got out there. But, I mean, the strength that they had definitely made me feel a lot better. I mean, my mom was with me every day in the hospital, and I kept asking her a million times what was going on because I just had, I was, didn't have, I didn't remember anything. There was a time where it was really hard and like they were just there the entire time every day in the hospital, every night in the hospital. And I mean, it really helped me so much and they were just so strong throughout this entire process. I will never be able to understand or really know what it really was like for them. But I know it was super hard. But still, even now, they're just so strong. They've never, they've never liked let go of that strength. But I know that it was hard, but I know that they wanted to be strong for me and that's what they were the whole time. So it was just amazing to have them and they're so strong and I want to be as strong as them one day. So.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Me too.
Savvy King
Me too.
But great throughout this entire process and yeah, support. It's been amazing.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
We're probably going to have to do another full episode because this year has been wild for all of us, but especially you. But thank you for this amazing update. It's so nice seeing you. Now I get to see you every day, single day. And you know, we're, we're, we're going to get on the field together at some point. It might be here, but we're doing it.
Savvy King
Yeah.
Coming soon. Stay tuned for that.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Stay tuned for that. And also enjoy this episode from Back in May with Savvy King on bffr.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Fall fashion is officially here, which means I can finally start putting away my summer fits, right?
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Like, summer in LA is great, but fall in L. A, when it cools down even a little, that's when I.
Savvy King
Can break out the layers.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Boots, maybe even a light jacket. I love it.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
And Macy's Fall Fashion Guide literally does all the work for you. They've got the trends laid out so you don't have to spiral on TikTok for inspiration.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
I love going to Macy's at the start of the season because they've got everything in one place. All the latest trends, plus big brands like Levi's, Steve Madden, Vince Camuto, Tommy Hilfiger, Sam Edelman, coach. Whatever vibe you're going for, it's there.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
So whether you're feeling romantic, boho statement, luxury, or just want a cute pair of boots, Macy makes it easy.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Macy's Fall Fashion Guide Shop in store.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Or@Macy'S.Com this episode is brought to you by PNC Bank.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
A lot of people think that a podcast where soccer players talk about their daily life would be boring and yeah.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Some of the grind can be boring, but it is our daily rituals and our preparation and doing it together that makes the wins even bigger.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
It's like banking with PNC Bank. It might seem boring to plan, save and make calculated decisions with your bank. Keeping your money boring is what helps you live a more happily fulfilled life.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
PNC bank, Brilliantly boring since 1865 brilliantly.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Boring since 1865 is a service mark of the PNC Financial Services Group Incorporated PNC Bank National association member, FDIC. Welcome, Sabi.
Savvy King
Thank you. Thanks for having me.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Of course. Welcome to bfsr.
Savvy King
It's a great place to be.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
It is, it is.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yes. All we ask is that you are for real with us always. Well, we have so much we want to talk to you about, but we know you are busy. You got places to go, things to see, forwards to shut down. So we're going to dive right in and ask you, what is it like to be 20 in 2025?
Savvy King
Wow. Um, I feel like I'm a little behind. I'm not very great with technology and I feel like we're.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Oh, okay.
Savvy King
We're advancing pretty fast here. Um, but it's. It's awesome. It's really cool. There's a lot of new opportunities out there to. To chase after. I just got to figure out what I want to do outside of soccer as well. But it's pretty cool. You know, I'm only a couple months into being 20, but, you know, I'm not a teenager anymore, so I feel more like an adult, you know, may not look like it, but. Wow.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah, he is an adult.
Savvy King
I'm almost official legal adult. Next year I'll be almost adult. Yeah, it's a big year for me.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Oh, my gosh. Well, since you aren't running around after two children, you're not cleaning up after a husband.
Savvy King
Yes.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
What do you do with your free time?
Savvy King
Well, I'm in school right now, so that takes up a lot of my time.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
We'll give you a pass.
Savvy King
Yeah. Okay.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Understandable. Still in college.
Savvy King
I'm a college dropout, but I actually went back to school, so I'm doing online classes technically. Still a freshman in terms of my. That's okay, you know, credits and everything, but yeah, I'll get there eventually. I'm still doing my gen eds and I'm in nutrition and psychology right now. So you say pretty busy, but I end in a couple of weeks and, you know, I'm doing well.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
And it's going to be summer.
Savvy King
Yeah.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah. Okay.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah.
Savvy King
So that takes up the majority of my time. But I live at home now so I can hang out with my parents. Yes.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
We're going to talk about that.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah. Do you. Is it family dinners? What's it like in the evenings?
Savvy King
Oh, yeah, family dinners. It's just like it was when I was in high school, except minus my brother now because he's in college. But when he comes home, it's like we're back to.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah. And you're. You're a twinning.
Savvy King
Yes.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
What's it like being a twin?
Savvy King
Amazing. I. I wouldn't have it any other way. Like, I'm so glad that I have my brother because we went through everything together at the same time. We all knew the same people, we had the same friend group, so it was just awesome.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Did you ever date one of his friends?
Savvy King
No.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Did he date any of your friends?
Savvy King
No.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Oh, that's really good, guys.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah, That's a good gift.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah.
Savvy King
I. He knew of. He ran track with my ex boyfriend, so I guess that.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Who kind of counts.
Savvy King
I don't know, actually, but I'm just gonna say my brother, I was definitely the fastest out of all of us.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah. There we go.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yes. We know this.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
All that matters.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
We know this because you did run track in high school like you said. And we just found out. I just found out that Savvy played flag football and she was absolutely crushing.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah.
Savvy King
Yeah. It was a big. It was a big thing for me because everyone. Well, Powderpuff was like a big thing at my high school. And I remember my sophomore year of high school, I couldn't go because of soccer or something.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Right.
Savvy King
So I know it was like a big thing. Like I'm back for my junior year. Everyone knew I was kind of.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
I'm back to be a powder puff.
Savvy King
Yes. And I was ready. And I knew that, you know, I was the talk of the town a little bit.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
We saw the video.
Savvy King
I had to show and show them why. So I know the seniors were a little upset because we took the title from them, but it had to be done. Someone had to come in, have to. Yeah. Because they were bragging about how they hadn't lost yet their entire freshman. Sophomore, Junior. And Savvy came and so I had.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah. The town is talking again because it was on national television. A clip of you Absolutely. Running the show. It was a great segment on prime with. At halftime of the game, I think, or during the game.
Savvy King
Yeah.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
And I mean, it was astounding. And flag football is coming to LA28 in the Olympics. So Girl, you have options.
Savvy King
I know. I'm excited. I may have to run off the soccer field, go play flag football. But I. It keeps coming up. Ever since high school, Ever since my junior year, it keeps coming up. Didn't know that they were going to play.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Maybe it's what you were meant to do.
Savvy King
I mean.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
No, no.
Savvy King
My back pocket.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
We know.
Savvy King
It was actually my sport ever.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Really.
Savvy King
When I was five, I played flag football with my brother.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Oh, that's nice.
Savvy King
And my parents used to say that, like, all the parents of the other boys would come watch me play because I was, of course, pretty good. People are still doing that.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
People are still doing.
Savvy King
Yeah, yeah. So it was my first sport, so I had to go back to my roots a little bit.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Okay, so when you say your first sport, I'm like, oh, the early 90s, like, when I started playing soccer. But it wasn't that long ago.
Savvy King
No, it was.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
So you were born in 2005?
Savvy King
Yes. So I started playing when I was in fifth grade. So I was, like, 10. And it was the last sport that I tried. I had done, like, everything else. I love sports, and so, like, I tried everything, especially with my brother. And then I tried soccer, because when I was in elementary school, like, me and this other kid, his name's Nico, and we were super competitive with each other in every single sport that we did, and I always wanted to beat him. And so he started playing soccer, and so I was like, okay, I'm starting soccer now, Savvy. And then we had, like, a competition of who could score the most goals. So I started off as a forward, and I won. I beat him. And so that was enough for me to keep wanting to play.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
After Nico, it was the world that she was going to take off.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Love that.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Exactly.
Savvy King
The mindset.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Well, we are running around after you out there on the pitch, and we've. Sid and I have talked a lot about this young generation coming through, and just the future is so bright, and the kids are all right. And everything else we can say about your generation. Savvy, we're dying to know. Do we seem really, really old to you?
Savvy King
No, you really don't.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Okay. Oh, we love you because we knew we liked you.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
For.
Savvy King
I. I don't consider someone old until they're, like, up there. Like, I don't want to say an age just in case I. Yeah, we're up there.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Okay.
Savvy King
But you're not up there at all.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
At all.
Savvy King
Do you not know what years we were born?
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
You.
Savvy King
I want to say you guys are what, like 35? 30.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Savvy King
Okay. So the math wise. Wow.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
I look 35.
Savvy King
Well, are you.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
You're close.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
No, I'm 35. In a couple days.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
I was born in 1987.
Savvy King
Okay.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
1990.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah. So a little while ago.
Savvy King
That's not.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Just. Just a little while.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah. Do you. Do you ever think about when you're defending against Sid and sitting next to each other in the locker room that when you part ways, she is picking her children up from school?
Savvy King
Sometimes. Does it ever cross your mind? It was only one day when Cassius was at practice and I was like, okay.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah.
Savvy King
Like, wow.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
It's, like, real.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah. Wait until both of them are.
Savvy King
I don't, like, really think about it even when I'm on the field, like, defending someone, unless it's like, I mean, Marta. And I'm like, oh, wow. Like, this is awesome. But she's. I mean, amazing. Been around for a long time, but I don't, like, think about age or anything, but I think you guys are young.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Of course we feel young.
Savvy King
We do. You are.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
And you keep us. Yeah. You got to believe it. Great.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
What was your first social media account?
Savvy King
And when it was Instagram? I'm actually a late bloomer to the party. I know there was, like, vine, and musically, I was never on that, so I was. I think it was Instagram. I think I was in middle school, like, eighth grade or so.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
What was your name?
Savvy King
Oh, that's a good question. Probably something ridiculous. But I think my mom had started it at first, and then she like, I had, like, a bunch of pictures of me, and then when I took it over, I was like, yeah, to go. I've got to go. And I changed my username. I don't remember what it was.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Okay.
Savvy King
But, yeah, I think it was. It was Instagram.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
We started out with Facebook. Well, we started out with no Internet at all.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah, MySpace. It was MySpace for me. Facebook wasn't around until my senior year of. Of high school, and it was only for college students, so.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Right.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
I could only get it because I had committed to Stanford. And when you get a college email account, then you could.
Savvy King
I didn't know.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
For Facebook.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah.
Savvy King
Wow.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah. Yeah. Did you have MySpace in Canada?
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
No. We had a thing called Nexopia.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Nexopia.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
So, yeah, I've heard of that.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Okay.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah, it's like MySpace, but it's not as, like, bully behavior with the top five and stuff. Oh, that was like, you know, we didn't do that. We're Canadian. We're nice. My email was caramel baby underscore hotmail.com.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Wow. Wow.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah. Yeah.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Our little Caramello baby.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Little Caramello baby. Yeah. I. Yeah, it's tough stuff.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
I had. I. I don't think I. It still might be active, so I'm not gonna say my first email address, but where I did most of my grafting was AOL Instant messenger aim. That was just where I did all my socializing. And my username was crazed Asian 5. 5.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
5 crazed Asian.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Asian spelled a Zn, of course.
Savvy King
Wow. Of course.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
That's the way.
Savvy King
Yeah.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
And five is my lucky number. We know that.
Savvy King
So.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah. That's where I did a lot of.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
That's where you thrived.
Savvy King
Yeah.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
I really did.
Savvy King
Yeah.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yep.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
What is it?
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
I had game on aim.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Asl, Age, sex, location.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Oh, I was thinking American Sign Language.
Savvy King
That's what I was thinking.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Oh, sorry. I'm going. I'm going way back then.
Savvy King
Yeah.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Remember you go a S L. No. Maybe I was in some chat groups that I should. Yeah, Yeah.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
I don't know. The American Sign Language chat groups. Yeah. So Caramello baby and crazed Asian555. We had to do you know what like Internet dial up sounds like, like. No, you're lucky.
Savvy King
Internet. What?
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
The Internet.
Savvy King
I never heard that.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
When we got the Internet, your phone stopped working. So you could only have one at a time.
Savvy King
One phone, one thing.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
One thing working. No, we didn't even have cell phones. Oh, it was the one of these bad boys.
Savvy King
No way.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yep. And you had to memorize all your friends numbers and then you had to call their house phone and. And then.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
And talk to the parents. If you wanted to talk to your friend or a boy, you had to say, hi, Mrs. So and so. I don't want to say any names. I don't want to expose myself here, but that's crazy. Yeah. How many phone numbers do you have memorized?
Savvy King
2. And it's my parents.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Well, that's good. You have those. Not even your brother?
Savvy King
No.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Not even your boyfriend?
Savvy King
No, I just click the. I just click.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
I will tell you, I don't have Lucas's phone number memorized. So that's not Swedish or American.
Savvy King
The only guy should know my brothers. But I don't. I should learn that. But I've just known my parents forever because I remember we had like. Well, we weren't allowed like phones when I was in elementary school. But because my parents wanted us to be safe and all that, we had like a little flip phone.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah.
Savvy King
All you could do is call. Yeah. Had to measure.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
That's how it still should be.
Savvy King
Yeah.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
That's how I had it too. But I was in 9th grade because phones had just been invented. Yeah.
Savvy King
Yeah.
I didn't like. I didn't like technology like that though. My brother and I were always kind of play outside. Yeah.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
That's what we did.
Savvy King
Yeah.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah. See this is really. This is good because look at you now.
Savvy King
Yeah.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
It's because you played outside.
Savvy King
I would never want my kids to be up. Like iPad kids or on their farm.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah. Neither say that now.
Savvy King
Yeah. But if I ask them to be quiet.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah. Wait till they're on a plane with the team flying to North Carolina.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah.
Savvy King
Yeah, that's acceptable. Yeah.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
There are some acceptable times. Yes. For sure.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
But you agree because you do hide the kids iPads. You don't want them to them. You don't want them to have so much screen time and then you can't.
Savvy King
Remember where you hid.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah. So I. I hide the kid's iPad when I'm like over it. And I hid it for two months because I forgot where I hit it.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Hit it for two months. Literally they were just gone.
Savvy King
And they never did you forget you hid them or.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
I forgot I forgot where I hid them.
Savvy King
Okay. But you were searching for them.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
I was.
Savvy King
So all three of you were just looking for it?
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Oh, yeah.
Savvy King
Yeah.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Oh, yeah. Any hiding. Hiding place. I do. Cassius somehow finds it. But not this one. No one knew. No one knew.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Well, I went in Sid's closet the other day and there was just a cookie on the top shelf.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
It's still there. Just.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
She was hiding it from someone and forgot.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah. Yeah. Right next to the shoes.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Right next to the. To the Pradas. Ooh. How many places do you think you'd be able to navigate to without using your phone?
Savvy King
Not very many.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Could you get to training?
Savvy King
Oh, yeah.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
That's good work. That's good.
Savvy King
And home I'm pretty good with like, if I go a place once, like I can. Or twice, maybe three times, I can like remember where it is. I may not know the address or anything. Like I don't know any of my friends addresses, but I can like know where they live. But like I. After I drove to practice once I. I was able to get there.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
I still use maps.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
It's just a habit.
Savvy King
I just sometimes put it in. Have to look to see where the best route to go.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
That is true. We live in la.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
I tell myself that's why I'm doing it.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah.
Savvy King
Just that's truly valid reason though. Yeah, I do it to practice sometimes just to see which way I should.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Go or like how much time it's going to take.
Savvy King
Yeah. So get my.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah, I got to get my. I'm sorry I'm late. Texas.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah, all. The kid was sick.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
I also. We also wanted to talk to you about your family. We think it's unbelievable. Beautiful, amazing. Obviously I met your mom, but tell us about your family.
Savvy King
Yeah, so I have two moms for everyone that doesn't know. I mean, growing up, I knew no different. Didn't think literally anything of it ever. Everyone was always so. Just normal, welcoming. Which is awesome that it's become something so, like regular now, which is really cool. But yeah, I have a twin brother. His name is Parker. We look pretty identical. I think as we've gotten older, we've started to look more alike. But he is at UC Santa Barbara right now studying pre med and he's an EMT school. All of a sudden he's smarty pants. Look at this fam who was valedictorian.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Oh, my gosh.
Savvy King
I like to think if I was actually at school, not traveling, like, I.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Would have been competing with him for another thing.
Savvy King
Yeah, of course. That's what I say. I always think that.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
So what do you call the moms who's.
Savvy King
Yeah. So growing up, it was Carrie, she was Mommy, and then my other mom's Kim, and she was Mama.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah, that's. That's how I heard it goes.
Savvy King
Yeah.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah, I love that. And what is it now?
Savvy King
Pretty much same thing. Same. Yeah.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Love that. Love that.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Okay, so who asked Sid for the video?
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Hi, Savvy, it's Sydney Larue. I just want to wish you a very good luck. I mean, a World Cup. That's pretty cool. I've been to a couple of those myself. And I hope you bring back the gold.
Savvy King
I think they were both there. I think. Were they? That might be wrong, but I feel like they were because I remember them sending me the video. But I know, well, Carrie was there because she took the picture with you. Okay. But I think maybe Kim was probably. She's probably around technological to film a film a video. Yeah.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
My mom couldn't do that.
Savvy King
My mom's always at the angles if you ever need a picture. She's like. She got everywhere. Yeah. I was like, wait, let me take one in portrait. Let me go. Let me get closer. Yeah, she's better than me, honestly. Wait.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Okay, so if you want a cute picture of yourself, would you trust your brother? Or your mom.
Savvy King
Probably my mom. My brother would probably be like, what are you wearing?
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Why are you.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Why are you looking like that?
Savvy King
Because every time, like, I'm, like, forcing to take pictures. Yeah, because we have, like, no pictures. Only when we were younger. And he's always like, I don't want to take pictures. I hate pictures. Like, don't post that. Because we always take pictures together. And I always, like, send it to him. I'm like, I'm post this of you. And he's like, no, don't do that. I'm going to post this. A few of you post that. And I'm like, this is just ridiculous. He hates photos and he hates taking them, being in them.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
You have to.
Savvy King
You have to train him. Yeah. He's in a family of girls. We would think that. Of course. Yeah, I know. His camera rolls empty. His camera's definitely.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
You're gonna have to. You're gonna have to change that ste. His phone and just take photos of yourself.
Savvy King
I know that he would use that as blackmail.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Tell everyone the story of how you ended up racing each other at a high school track meet.
Savvy King
Yeah. So my brother and I, our senior year of high school, we were doing, like. I think it might have been senior night. I don't know if that's accurate or not, but it was the 4x4. So it was the last event of the day. Everyone's exhausted. Like, we started when the sun was up. The sun was far gone at this point. It was like high school track, 7:30pm we'd been there all day, and so they just decided to combine, like, all of the relay teams. So it was like, girls jv, girls varsity, boys jv, boys varsity.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
I've never heard this being done before. Like, let's just have you all.
Savvy King
I think they were just over it.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah.
Savvy King
They were like, we're not on the line. Yeah, there was so many of us, too. It was. It was crazy. But they were all just over it, I guess. And so we both ended up being the anchors of our teams. And so, like, I remember my third leg. She was like, catching his, like, I guess his third leg was just not having a good day. And so, like, she started to catch him and then she passed him. And so I got the baton first. I start running, and I know he's coming, and so, like, is he fast, too? Yeah, he's pretty fast. But he had been, like, hurt, like, all of high school. So this was like, his first, like, season back. But I'm super competitive, so I don't Like, I wasn't just gonna.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
No layover.
Savvy King
And especially I knew it was being filmed.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
And I. Oh, there was extra motivation. That's it.
Savvy King
I was like, yeah, I know. My parents. My parents were so excited. I could see them. Crowd like this, just waiting for us, and they were just laughing the whole time. And I remember I hear him coming and he passed me. I was like, oh, yeah. Like, I know we're coming around for the 200 mark. And then down the straightaway, I could tell he was getting tired because he had raced a lot. Like, yeah, he runs like he went out too far. Oh, yeah, the adrenaline.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah, it died down.
Savvy King
And I was like, the wall.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah.
Savvy King
I was like, okay.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Twin breathing down his neck. Bad time to hit a wall.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Bad time.
Savvy King
And then I. I was like, I can see him getting closer. And I was like, okay. Like, I got him. I knew it, like, going into the hundred straight away. And then, like, right before we hit the finish line, I got him. And I was like. He was like, that.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
That is sensational.
Savvy King
It was so good. It was. If people were talking about it for a little bit, I felt a little bad because I was like, don't feel bad.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Well, now you just told thousands and thousands of people, so you didn't feel that bad.
Savvy King
Everyone knows. At least there's no video for him.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Okay, well, track flag football. You are playing professional soccer in your hometown at 20 years old.
Savvy King
Yes.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
When did you know that this could be a reality for you?
Savvy King
That's a great question. I mean, being this young. No, I did not think it was possible, I guess, because I just had never seen it being done for players that young. But I think, oh, I've always wanted to be a professional athlete as well. Like, I think I was 12 when I was like, okay, this is definitely what I wanted to do at that point. You were my favorite player for the longest time because I was a forward, too. And I was like, there's probably a video of me somewhere saying that you were my favorite player. Which is just a crazy full circle moment. But, yeah, I mean, now when I went to college, like, it was never my intention to just, you know, do one season and then be done. But I think it was just a combination of seeing how much, like, the league is evolving with younger players going pro, and then also just seeing, like, the pathway there is. Has changed a lot, which is really great and inspiring to see. And so to be a part of, like, a few of the young players that went early and now it's becoming more, you know, prevalent. So it's, like, cool to be a part of that, but being this young. No, I never thought it was possible, but, I mean, especially to be back home in la, where it all started, where I started playing soccer. And, I mean, I drive the same route to practice that I did to high school, so it's just like, wow. Like, it's just Go crazy being back home. Yeah. And just, you know, doing what I love.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
And that's having your family there.
Savvy King
Yeah. It's awesome that every game, I mean, they would travel everywhere. Like, my parents have rarely ever missed a game, even, like, internationally. Like, wow. My parents are always around. They came to every UNC home game. And I mean, at bay, they were always there as well because it was not a far drive. But it's nice now that they can just.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Yeah.
Savvy King
Drive with me. I make them drive me. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
There you go.
Savvy King
The traffic is so that they don't have to park.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah, there.
Savvy King
It's a.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
There you go. So when they just have to stay there for, like, three hours before the game.
Savvy King
Yeah, they don't mind. Yeah.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
But before we wrap up, you have had now experience with the senior national team. What was that like?
Savvy King
Amazing. I was so nervous going into it just because, like, that's something that I've always dreamed of. And then it was just like, incredible to even have the opportunity to do that. And being 20 as well was just insane to me. But everyone was so welcoming and so supportive and just. It just made the experience so much better. And it's just awesome because it's like, these players you look up to all the time and that I've watched on TV for years is just like, wow, like, we're in the same locker room. Like, I was like, oh, my gosh. Trying to not to act too. Like, this is crazy, but it's awesome to, like, get that type of training and to have, like, you know, a coach believe in you, that you can, you know, be at that level at such a young age. And also helped having some young players there as well, you know, because I think that really helped, you know, make it a little bit less, like, crazy. But I think it really hit me after that. I was like, wow. Like, that's everything that I've ever, ever dreamed of. And, you know, I am still waiting for my first cap, so I'm excited for that.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
It's coming, Bobby.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
It's coming.
Savvy King
But we all know that it's just. That was just an incredible experience, and I'm so glad that I got to be a part of it and see some of our teammates first caps. That was awesome to be in person. Yeah. And be a part of that. So great experience.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Well, we're so proud of you and excited for you.
Savvy King
It's awesome. Thank you so much for having me.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Thank you. Thank you for joining us.
Savvy King
Yeah, anytime.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Yeah, we'll. We're going to dive into some of the kind of what, the 90s and early 2000, some of the things you missed before you were born. So that'll be behind the scenes. Stay tuned for that. But thank you so much. And. Yeah. So what time did you say family dinners were usually?
Savvy King
Well, probably around 6:37 normally.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Okay.
Savvy King
Making tacos tonight. Okay.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Well, we'll get your address.
Savvy King
Yeah, yeah, come over. Yeah, she'd love to. She loved that.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
It was like I was. I was hinting at. Yeah. So it's me, Lucas, Sid, Cassius, and Rue.
Savvy King
So that's totally good.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
That's great.
Savvy King
I'll let her know.
Host 1 (possibly Lucas)
Thanks, Savvy.
Host 2 (possibly Sid)
Thank you. We love you. We'll see you tomorrow.
