Sid
So I'm going to look into Dr. Cappuccino. No, she's amazing, but I don't know about the anus.
Ali
Okay.
Sid
Yeah, we'll see.
Ali
Never say never. Never say never.
Sid
Never say never till you try it. Okay, I've tried it. No, thank you.
Ali
Hello.
Sid
What? And we're back with another episode of BFFR with me, Sid, and me and Ali.
Ali
Ali, make sure you're following us on socials, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcast FFR show. And keep these calls coming. Keep the DMS coming. The hotline is 1-833-txt-BFFR.
Sid
That's 1-833-898-2337.
Ali
We have a really fun episode today. We got the chance to talk to the OGs.
Sid
OGs.
Ali
We have been following these since beginning content creators, comedians for a very long time. We talked about viral tweets, building brands, and of course, our biggest soccer girl problems. Because we. We talk to the founders of soccer girl Probs. But before we get into that, Sid, how you doing?
Sid
Oh, this week. How. How's your week? Actually, Because I think that yours is probably more fun to talk about.
Ali
Okay. I do have a fun update. Let's first add. By the time you're listening to this, a few weeks will have gone by. I hope I'm not ruining the magic of podcasting for you right now, but.
Sid
This is what happens.
Ali
We do record in advance, so sorry. But also bffr, if you didn't know that we are about to go on the NWSL mandated break. So getting a few episodes in, but it is the middle of June and I just trained with the team for the first time.
Sid
For the first time. And she hit 104% of her max speed, which means she's faster than she has been in three years.
Ali
Yeah. So I hit my fastest speed since joining Angel City, so it feels like maybe anything's possible. I can't get ahead of myself because I don't want to be disappointed, but.
Sid
I'm getting ahead of myself.
Ali
Yeah. Thanks, Sid. Just every day is just like celebrating and. Yeah. And I need that to remember. To celebrate every day.
Sid
Yeah.
Ali
But one thing that may have helped me hit that new top speed is my pelvic floor specialist. So if you didn't know, we all have a pelvic floor. But it is something that a lot of women work with after you've given birth or preparing to give birth, or if you have a injury where the doctor might think that someone's sticking their finger that your hoo ha Or. Or. And. Or rectally. What?
Sid
I didn't know that.
Ali
I didn't tell you. What? Oh, we go in front door and back door. Oh, wow. When I say we, I mean a doctor and. And. And releases the things that are in your pelvic floor.
Sid
Yeah. No shit.
Ali
Yeah.
Sid
Wow.
Ali
So I.
Sid
Back door and front door. Wow. I've learned. I just learned something very new today.
Ali
Yes. And she. Dr. Cappuccino, shout out.
Sid
Ooh.
Ali
Not as relaxing as going and getting a Cappuccino, but Dr. Cappuccino, she's been working with me now for almost a year. After the Olympics, I. I didn't go to her for a while. And then now, as I'm being more active and still having some symptoms in that area, she's been tending to my knees. It does not feel good.
Sid
Wow. Is. Do they use, like tools like the womanizer or.
Ali
Unfortunately, no vibrating tools that I have to do on my own. But she uses her finger.
Sid
Just her finger?
Ali
Just her finger. It's not. You know, we're not going so far in there.
Sid
Okay.
Ali
And then there is something called a wand. It looks very scary. So I'm. I don't know how to explain this. It's kind of like. I feel like it looks like the thing that, like Little Bo Peep, you know, like a staff. Like a. What do you call those?
Sid
Like one of those.
Ali
Yeah, and it has like a hook.
Sid
Oh, wow.
Ali
And so you. You put that in and you just kind of dig in. You dig in and it's like. If you think of a massage gun, I mean, these are the same places if you are doing a massage gun on your ass, which is where I have this injury. This is just doing. Doing that from the inside.
Sid
Yeah, from your.
Ali
Enough about me. Sid, how are you?
Sid
Well, we just talked about that, and I'm like, I should go to a pelvic floor specialist.
Ali
Yeah. You had some trauma down there.
Sid
Yeah, I had major trauma. Major. So I'm gonna look into Dr. Cappuccino.
Ali
No, she's amazing.
Sid
But I don't know about. About the anus.
Ali
Okay.
Sid
Yeah, we'll see.
Ali
Never say never. Never say no.
Sid
Never say never till you try it. Okay, I've tried it, but no, thank you.
Ali
So if you can't see us, Sid and I are wearing our Immigrant City football club T shirts. That again, if you're listening to this, this was a couple weeks ago for you, but for us, this was the past weekend. And the club made these shirts. This all came together with the riots happening in Los Angeles. And we wanted to show as a club, as a team, as players, what we stand for. And we wore these shirts. But bffr, of course, people just can't. Except that this was something good, right?
Sid
No, no, no, you can't.
Ali
And Sid had time this week. So what did you do?
Sid
Said, I don't know, some girl, like, commented on something that had pushed out what we did.
Ali
Yeah. It was like, oh, wow, you did this for.
Sid
Only for 2,000 people or whatever, girl.
Ali
Also, so what if it was 2,000 people?
Sid
100. It could be one person. Yeah, we don't care. But also, like, you looked at that picture and then you were like, no one's there. When it was eight hours before the game, you idiot.
Ali
It was a picture of the shirts. The shirts were handed out to every supporter and every fan who came to our Angel City game. And there were over 10,000 people there.
Sid
Yes.
Ali
But sorry that there was one photo of the shirts there on the seats before people arrived.
Sid
And, like, are you miserable? That's like. That's what I want to know.
Ali
There was also a lot of people commenting when we were posting about these shirts. And this was a beautiful moment. Becky G. Flew in. This woman is obviously super busy. Flew into LA to be at this Angel City game to wear this shirt to represent how so many of us are feeling and read a poem, got the crowd involved that we are immigrant city Y. And people were writing that Angel City was trying to capitalize off of this horrible thing and make money.
Sid
Yeah. God forbid. We're just. We like human decency. God forbid.
Ali
If you read anything on these posts, these shirts were handed out for free to everybody. And they printed over 10,000 shirts for free and just swallowed those costs. And then the shirts that are being sold, a hundred percent of the net proceeds are going to Camino Immigration Services. So Angel City isn't making a dime from these shirts. And it says there's no branding.
Sid
Nope.
Ali
There's nothing on there.
Sid
No Nike sign, no Angel City, no nothing.
Ali
And we just. I mean, Sid and I just couldn't believe that there are people who just want to tear you down. Always.
Sid
Always.
Ali
Yeah. It was very powerful and empowering, and obviously we're going to keep these conversations going. But hopefully the money raised and donated from these T shirts can really go a long way in helping people.
Sid
Yeah. And maybe just sometimes just sh. On things that you don't really know about. I would start there.
Ali
Any other BFFR moments for you?
Sid
Lou had her first period.
Ali
Oh, Lou is a dog.
Sid
Yes. Louise had her first Period. And she's just been having a really hard time.
Ali
Pms a little bit.
Sid
She's barking downstairs and I was like, girl. But like, she's bleeding everywhere. So she's wearing a diaper. And that's exactly how I would feel if I was wearing a pad. Poor girl.
Ali
Oh, well, we want to hear your BFFR stories. We've gotten amazing questions.
Sid
We have.
Ali
But give us. Give us the tea.
Sid
Yeah, we want the tea.
Ali
We're gonna put a little. A little call to action on Instagram, but use that hotline. Of course. As you will. But we would love to hear anything. Delulu. Any drama.
Sid
Yeah, we love Delulu. We love delusions.
Ali
Yes.
Sid
Which we have a lot of. Yeah, I have a lot of. You keep me.
Ali
We got Delulu in the laruru household here.
Sid
Yeah.
Ali
But you know what? Let's get to our convo with. With soccer girl. Proud. They had some great.
Sid
Let's get into it. Okay. Can I admit something?
Ali
Always.
Sid
There are weeks when my entire vegetable intake is the lettuce on my burger.
Ali
Hey, we've got a lot going on. Training, recording, the podcast, life in general. You've got kids. Sometimes the nachos just win.
Sid
That's why I started taking Rituals essential for women 18 +. It's formulated to help fill some of those nutrient gaps I know I'm not always getting from my diet.
Ali
Same here. I take mine first thing in the morning. It's super easy. It doesn't upset my stomach. I love that it's only two capsules and it actually has this great minty essence and it makes it enjoyable to take.
Sid
Another thing I love is Ritual Multivitamins are vegan, non GMO, project verified gluten and major allergen free and made traceable.
Ali
Plus they're third party tested for heavy metals and clean label project certified so you actually know what you're putting in your body.

Sid
This episode is brought to you by PNC Bank.
Ali
A lot of people think that a podcast where soccer players talk about their daily life would be boring.
Sid
And yeah, some of the grind can be boring. But it is our daily rituals and our preparation and. And doing it together that makes the wins even bigger.
Ali
It's like banking with PNC Bank. It might seem boring to plan, save and make calculated decisions with your bank. Keeping your money boring is what helps you live a more happily fulfilled life.
Sid
PNC bank brilliantly boring since 1865 brilliantly.
Ali
Boring since 1865 is a service mark of the PNC Financial Services Group Incorporated. PNC Bank National association member FDIC all right, today's guests we have been wanting to connect with for a very long time. Both of us have actually been interviewed by them before. But it's time for us to do the interviewing because these are the brains behind the iconic soccer girl problems somehow turning a viral Twitter account into a full on lifestyle. And as Sid and I know, there are a lot of. A lot of soccer girl problems, but your account has gotten us through some dark times.
Sid
Very dark.
Ali
Thank you so much, Shannon and Alana. Welcome to the BFFR show and thank you for joining us.
Shannon
At the end of the day, it's all just trauma bonding, isn't it?
Sid
Yes, 100% sure feels that way. 100%. When we first work together, it was 2017 with Mal and that was when, like women's soccer wear was coming out. Because we had always worn men's before and we always had.
Ali
Did you guys talk about that on.
Sid
Big Package for what? For what?
Ali
Yes. And Spand always had.
Sid
And I'm like a little pocket so you had to roll them six times just to get it at the normal.
Shannon
That was the look back then. Was the spandex like down to right above the knee and the shorts higher.
Ali
Right. Tiffany Milbrit really perfected that for FC Gold Pride. That was. That was 2010 predating your interview. But yeah, things have definitely changed in the, in the merch space for women. And you have your own merch line. I mean, tell us, how did this all begin? What was the first tweet? What was the first content that just set off this incredible journey you've had as, I mean, business icons.
Shannon
All right, well, what's ironic about this whole situation is that we never started with the intention of starting a business at all. It was truly just a preseason bonding experience to make a Twitter. And all of us just air our dirty laundry out on this Twitter account. Oh, my gosh. But you know, every player, every college player comes from a club team and a high school team, so it just spread really fast because the community's very small. And then I think we just realized very quickly that we really are all experiencing the same stuff day in and day out. And yeah, there's just a lot to bond over. And the YouTube video went viral without us even trying to Go viral. And then I think we really had to hone in and be like, all right, what are we going to do about this?
Alana
Since then, we've gone back and we've deleted some tweets that maybe you shouldn't have put up. You were very honest. But I think that was part of the appeal. It was like. It was relatable, you know?
Ali
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it sure was. So what was the original video that went viral for. For the people who don't know.
Alana
So that was when. Gosh, what year was this, Alana? 2012.
Ali
11.
Alana
Yeah, this is when, like, shit boyfriends say, shit girlfriend say. We're going viral. So we made a shit soccer girl say, and we ran around campus with our iPad and just filmed every, like, soccer girl problem that we were tweeting. People were tweeting at us. And that was where the jeans. I was in my underwear for millions of people to see, which I did not think was gonna happen.
Ali
I remember that so well.
Sid
No, that was.
Alana
And we went to a j. A Jesuit school, so there was, like, priests watching this video of me in my underwear. I was like, oh, no. Yeah, my professors.
Sid
No one ever said anything. No. No one ever said anything.
Shannon
They.
Alana
They said they saw the video, but no.
Shannon
And keep in mind, this was before the days of nil deals. So we had to be completely secretive. Like, every shirt had to be turned inside out. If our scoreboard was in the background of the scene, we had to edit it out. Oh, Our coaches did not want this to be known at all, that it was Fairfield associated. And then eventually it got to the point where then they were like, yeah, please advertise 100%.
Sid
100%.
Shannon
Rightfully so.
Sid
Yeah, go ahead.
Shannon
I was just gonna say rightfully so. In the beginning, they wanted nothing to do with it. I don't blame them, of course.
Sid
But until you guys became famous and they're like, you know, let us in. Yeah, let us in. It's always what happens. Okay, so this started out as, like, a fun, cool thing that just got all the soccer girls together. When did you guys realize, like, man, this could really be something?
Shannon
For me personally, I was a little bit older than Carlene Shannon, so when I graduated, we decided to, like, incorporate a business under the Twitter handle name. And everyone was like, make T shirts. Make T shirts. And we were like, that's so crazy. Like, people didn't really have merch back then. And we were like, yeah, we'll put some tweets on a T shirt. And we made this website that no one should have ever trusted to put their credit card information into. It was so sketchy. But we made it.
Ali
We.
Shannon
We put this website up and we ordered like 300 t shirts. Didn't even think to put a cap on the T shirts. Cause we were like, this would be so cool if someone ordered a T shirt. We made it live. It crashed the whole site. And I think like a thousand T shirts bought, like T shirts that we didn't even have now because we didn't order that many. So we were like, damn. Like, for me, that was our moment where I was like, all right, wow. This is like a following of people that feels so understood by something that they want to actually represent it on a piece of clothing. So it was a really cool but also horrifying moment.
Sid
Yeah.
Alana
And that was also before you could like, print shipping labels. So Alana would have to go to the post office, thousands of packages and scan them one by one.
Sid
Oh, my goodness.
Alana
So she used to have the. Didn't you, like, give the mailman, like, booze at Christmas?
Shannon
Yeah.
Ali
Oh, and they would let me come.
Shannon
In before the post office open, like at like 6am it was wild. It was like an underground business day. It was great.
Sid
Moment was unpopular. That was the T shirt.
Alana
The T shirt was. Yeah, that. I think that was awesome.
Sid
For me, that was the moment.
Ali
I mean, oh, my goodness.
Sid
That's amazing.
Ali
You're pioneers in this space and it's. We talk about now we're in this era of women's sports and investment. But I think we saw the beginning of that because of. Of what you did, that people care. And yes, it was a lot of soccer girls, but we are a big ass community and be for real. Like, we. We made this into a movement. Thanks to you for starting it, but 100%. I just.
Shannon
We always say if it wasn't us that made a funny video or an account like that spoke for the female athlete or soccer girls, it would have been someone else too, because we were all truly just speaking what everyone else was going through. So it's. It's really cool. And we're really lucky that it was us that ended up making an account. But yeah, it was the time for that representation to start, for sure.
Ali
Yeah. Well, it was supposed to be you, and I was just wondering. I also was making content very early on, but the editing and the posting, the content, the socials, the merch. So was that. Was that all you? Is it still you?
Shannon
We were so bad at it. It was all us and it still is all us. It when we go back. When I go back and watch it now, I'm like, this is. It's cringy. How bad? It's fun and pieced together.
Ali
It's classic.
Sid
It is classic.
Shannon
There's, like, the censor beep sound, but we didn't mute the curse, so you could, like, still hear the curse word with the beep.
Sid
Yeah, but that's a good thing.
Ali
I still have issues with that.
Sid
That's a good thing. I like that.
Alana
It's tough. Yeah.
Sid
So it was just.
Alana
It was the three of us from the start, which was crazy. And you could tell who it was by the tweet. Like, mine were always misspelled. I feel like Alana and Carly had their own voices, which was fun because we would be laughing at the tweets coming out too. But, yeah. We recently joined forces with Football Co and Divisa just to help us get to the next level. I feel like we've been doing this for so long by ourselves, almost 14 years, which is crazy. So now it's nice to have a team to help back us up and get us to the next level.
Sid
It's what you deserve.
Ali
Yeah. And to stay relevant for that long. And I see just the engagement you get because these problems aren't going anywhere. We may be making more money, maybe not us, but the next generation is making more money. But you still get mad when your pre wrap breaks. You still get mad when you get that turf burned like these. These problems aren't going anywhere, and they will never be less, you know, funny and just something to commiserate over. What has been your number one soccer girl prob?
Alana
All right. Well, I think mine is a classic one. I. I still feel like jeans are my number one soccer girl probably. I know they've come a long way. It's been an evolution, but I still struggle to find jeans that fit me. I feel like I need, like, Sister of the Traveling Pants jeans. I need them to, like, figure out every part of me still. But I think that's still my. My soccer brav since day one.
Shannon
And I think mine was just something we can all relate to, just being just chronically injured. I had every season the injury du jour of the season, so never, never got over it. It was a fun menu of injuries. And. Yeah. And it's fun because even when you're, like, done playing, you're still pretty accident prone. It's a wonderful thing.
Sid
Yeah.
Ali
Yes. Definitely agree with both of those. Sid, what's yours?
Sid
I mean, I do have, like, a thousand. You do that pissed me off. I'm gonna go with one. When a referee calls you like by your first name. Oh God, don't do that.
Shannon
It's like a parent. Yeah, it's like a parent. Yeah.
Sid
I don't call you by your first name. You don't know me. And then I feel bad when I have something to say to them because I'm like, you dug deep.
Ali
Yeah. That, that actually was a, a big thing in the nwsl and we would have these captains meetings and, and talk to the referees and be able to ask questions and it was like. That was a point of emphasis from us players. Please stop calling us by our first names. You're not a parent, we're not friends. But it was something that. It was not just Sid. It really, really was bothering so many of the players. And so now, yeah, they have made a huge effort to say number two, number five or our last names. But it's funny that that just really ticked us off.
Sid
Yeah.
Alana
Cuz I didn't know that they're not.
Shannon
Calling men by their first name. You know, there's no way.
Sid
No, it's very Christian. Yeah.
Ali
I want them. They are.
Sid
You're not doing that.
Ali
No.
Alana
So did you ever call any ref by their first name?
Sid
No. No, never. I've, I've called them many, many names, but not by their first name.
Ali
Everything but everything.
Sid
But.
Ali
We actually knowing that we were going to, to interview you put the, put the call out on Instagram. And a lot of them were, were very identifiable. The tan lines. I mean, I'm rocking this like awful whoop tan. I just switched it to the, to the other side. That was the one thing Lucas said when we were getting close to the.
Shannon
Wedding was please, please alternate that.
Ali
Don't wear, don't wear the whoop during the wedding. Yeah, that and also I wouldn't please fix the tan line. I was like, why be really interested to know the data, the heart rate. Exactly. I saw another soccer girl prob like the tan. But also I want to know everything. And then we thought this was so funny. This was from. See, I'll. I'll give them a shout out here. I don't know, should I keep them? I'll let them be anonymous. But we really like this. So many lesbians, yet none of them seem to want me. And my, my co host here also.
Sid
Really, I've told you that a lot.
Ali
Really is wondering why none of the lesbians want her.
Sid
Never. I'm like, am I not giving cool, cool energy?
Ali
I think you're Giving straight energy. I'm sorry, but I feel like. Yes, it is refs. Definitely refs. And. And the fans. Like the trolls.
Sid
Yeah, yeah, no, When I have time. I have time.
Ali
Yeah, yeah. I love.
Shannon
Oh, I love when you have time. I love when you have time.
Sid
Yes, so do I. I love when I have time.
Ali
I love when Sid has time. And then the person deletes their account.
Sid
Oh, y. Deletes the whole thing. Not the. Not the tweet, not the like little message. The entire.
Ali
They gone.
Shannon
Their existence.
Alana
That's awesome.
Sid
Yeah.
Ali
Who is the coolest guest besides Sydney LaRue and Ali Riley that you've interviewed? And I want to know a moment where you just thought, how is this our job? How did we get here? So really cool. Hi. Hype it up.
Sid
Yeah. Well, I think.
Alana
I think someone that was been on our bucket list forever has been Abby Wambach. And it's funny, she actually interviewed us like a few years before we got to interview her. Which was like crazy to have Abby interviewing us. Like, we flew to LA and we. We were on some show that she was hosting and it was like so cool. And like, I think it was Brandy and Mia and someone else were. Julie were like the guests before us. So they like warmed up the seats for us. We're like, thank you so much.
Ali
They were the opening actors. You were the main event.
Shannon
Sure.
Sid
Main event.
Ali
I don't think so.
Shannon
And then.
Alana
But no, that was a really cool moment. And then having Abby on our podcast was awesome.
Shannon
I was going to say for me, when we went to Canada for the World cup in every city, even like Winnipeg, Vancouver, everywhere, we would host a pickup game. We would just literally tweet some random grass field that we found. We'd be like, come play pickup with us before the game and we would. We were so unprepared for. It could have been 10 people that showed up or 200 people. And we would have like literally like cleat boxes would be the goal posts and everything. So we're on this dusty ass field. I don't know where we were. Maybe it was Vancouver, but like the worst field soccer box on the ground. No one even has pennies to tell what team is on. And an Uber rolls up and Mia Ham gets out of the Uber and I like, I switched into like 10 year old me so fast. I couldn't even. I couldn't. I was like an idiot. I was like. I couldn't even speak whole sentences to her. But that for me was a moment where I was like, I Was like looking around, I'm like, is anyone else realizing that me and Hammers got out of a vehicle right now, like and is walking to this dusty ass field that we're all just running around on? That was my moment for sure. That was the coolest moment for me still.
Alana
One of our favorite memories of that, of that World cup was. I think it was the game you scored Sid. And we had some sort of credentials that we should not have had. And we were trying to find like a bathroom or something at halftime and they thought we were on the team.
Sid
Oh, wow.
Alana
So they kept sending us to lower levels and sending us to lower levels. And we were outside of your locker room at halftime at the moment. Was that the first music was bumping the music. Oh, so was it pregame on it?
Shannon
I think it was pregame.
Alana
First game.
Shannon
I think it was pre game.
Sid
Goodness.
Alana
So the music was blasting and we're like about to open the door. Cause we think we're going to the bathroom and Eileen, a security guard is like, what are you guys doing?
Ali
We're like, you should have gone bathroom. Oh my.
Sid
We were so close. Was that in Vancouver?
Alana
I don't remember. Do you want to.
Shannon
The whole Canada World Cup. I don't remember where. We just should not have been there.
Alana
But I mean, if that was your first. I think it was your first goal in the World Cup.
Sid
No, I.
Alana
Do you remember?
Sid
I. It was the first game I assisted to press. That was the first goal of the tournament.
Alana
Okay, so maybe that was in the tournament.
Sid
No, I scored against New Zealand though, in the Olympics too.
Ali
We're not talking about that.
Alana
It must have been your assist. I just remember it was like a big moment and like a super exciting golf.
Sid
That was exciting.
Ali
Well, you did just recently tease a rebrand and given that we are recording this, you know, in advance and this will come out a few weeks after you announce. Is there anything you can tell us? Right now I am on the edge of my seat. I keep refreshing your Instagram because a new name like what. What's happening?
Shannon
I feel like tell anyone we. We collectively feel like it. It might be time to say goodbye to our problems. That's all we can can really say. And that's.
Sid
Oh, so then what are we getting into after the problems?
Ali
Yeah. Wait, can I still tag you when I. When I post about my problems?
Sid
We're always.
Shannon
Yeah. Oh, hell yes. Still, we're. We're still gonna exist in the problems. Don't worry. But yeah, we're hoping for just something else. No, but it's going to be really exciting because we have been, like, hand drawing our logos and just coming up with stuff on our own since we started this. So to have a professional team of people that actually know what they're doing and are skilled at their jobs and graphic design and all of that are going to be playing a big role in helping us revand and hopefully come out with a cool new look and everything.
Ali
Okay.
Alana
And new colors.
Sid
We're ready for it. We're ready. We're ready. We're excited.
Alana
We are, too.
Sid
Before we started BFFR the. The podcast, we had BFFR Ali's iPhone 11.
Ali
Yeah.
Sid
So I totally understand what it means to, like, edit your own content. I don't personally understand, but I did watch all the time and I was.
Ali
Like, sid's role has not changed at all.
Sid
I was like, that's good.
Alana
Was that. Was that your Instagram?
Ali
Yeah.
Alana
The videos of you both together, those are hilarious.
Ali
Thank you.
Shannon
Yeah. Never let those stop. Those are such good intros and promos for the episodes that come up. I don't know how you guys are finding another ridiculous thing. The water bottle was hilarious.
Ali
Thank you. Well, when we are in person, when you are launching your rebrand and we get to meet up hopefully before the next World Cup. Although if you're playing pickup in Brazil in 27, you better let us know. We'll roll up in. In an Uber to any dusty field.
Sid
We're used to it.
Ali
Yeah, we. We got to get some content going in person. I think if anyone has good ideas for videos, it's definitely you, but that would be awesome. We got to hit you with the rapid fire. So we do said take. Take it away.
Sid
Answer these questions accordingly. Funniest player you've ever interviewed.
Alana
I think Christy Mewes is pretty funny. When we had her on Christy, we also. She forgot to record on. This is like back in early podcast days. So we all had to record separately and she forgot to record, so we ended up getting to it twice.
Sid
That is a Christie thing to do. That is a Christy thing to do.
Ali
Oh, my gosh. Ooh. Do you have a soccer girl crush who should. Who's a soccer girl everyone should be crushing on right now?
Shannon
I fangirl so hard. I fangirl so hard over Alana Kennedy. I just think she's the coolest soccer girl ever. I just. She's so badass.
Sid
Come on over to Los Angeles.
Ali
Yes. Alana squared. Yeah, we love that happen.
Sid
We can. Worst merch idea that you almost launched or launched.
Alana
Alana, do you Know was we were between two logos to start, and we had, like, this high heel logo that we were, like, very close to making, like, our logo, like, for the entire company. And we got very lucky that we.
Sid
Is it the high heel on top of the soccer ball?
Alana
Yeah, it's pretty. It's pretty close to that.
Sid
Yeah. Called it. Called it.
Alana
Yes. So that was.
Ali
We would have loved it for a while, I feel like, until you're like, dude, that's bad.
Sid
High heels.
Alana
Yeah.
Sid
It's like a platform.
Alana
We got really.
Sid
A kitten heel. Yeah.
Ali
Oh. What is a soccer trend that needs to be retired?
Shannon
The tiny little effing shin guards. Get those shits out of here. Those things are ridiculous. They are. They. It's like putting a tampon in the front of your sock. I so irritated by them. Get that out of here.
Sid
I know.
Ali
I didn't know they could get smaller. And they keep getting.
Sid
It's like for a bibbit smaller. It's for a child.
Ali
Yeah.
Sid
I mean, there's cashes are bigger.
Ali
There's ones now it's like a playing card this big.
Shannon
It's so.
Ali
And then you just kind of can mold it to your leg and it's.
Shannon
Like, I get it. You're tough. You're tough, but it hurts to get kicked in the shin. I don't care how tough you are. That is.
Ali
They're so tiny.
Sid
I just like the look of the long socks. I'm not really into.
Ali
Yeah, I just am kind of.
Sid
You just put it on just.
Ali
Just right below the knee with a normal shin guard. I. It's not something I really put any energy into.
Sid
Yeah. I'm mid thigh with the socks.
Shannon
Wait, I'm curious. What soccer trend do you guys think should be gone?
Ali
Sid hates the shorts rolled up.
Sid
Really?
Ali
I do, but I roll my shorts and, like, looks like a diaper. Like, kind of tuck it into to my spandex.
Alana
How many rolls do you do?
Ali
I do one roll. I will say my ass has grown a lot since rehabbing.
Sid
And it looks so good.
Ali
I can't roll as much anymore because then it goes real high up.
Sid
Yeah, right up there.
Shannon
Hashtag blessed. Very nice.
Sid
Yeah, she is. Truly.
Ali
It's a silver lining from the absolute hell I've been going through. But may this follow me into. Into my return to play. Yeah, 100%. I. So I used to play on turf and the spitting, like, the hawking aie on the turf. Like, maybe in a game. Whatever. You got to do what you got to do. But during training, when my teammates I'm like, that will be there forever. Like, no one. No one is cleaning the turf like. Like this. The gum. And spitting on astronauts, not rockets.
Shannon
That used to be in my track.
Ali
Like. Yeah. Not that that's a trend, but just a thing that I thought might be a trend. I. A trend that surprises me is the gum chewing. I would never.
Sid
I would choke and die.
Ali
Yes. And it makes my mouth so dry. Were you gum?
Shannon
I was a gum girl. I needed like the minty. Like, the. What is that? Like the. Like when something's really minty and it almost makes. Opens your breathing up a little bit. Would find the mintiest gum possible during light conditioning. Yeah. And I would choke sometimes. So you're not wrong.
Sid
Maybe. Maybe. See what happens when you really open up the sinuses just a little.
Ali
Just like some wasabi.
Sid
Yeah. Right before.
Ali
I don't. I don't need to be more. More opened up, but I. I'm always surprised when I am near a winger or something and I like.
Sid
Yeah. I don't know.
Ali
It's like, holy moly, this is a lot.
Sid
No, I couldn't.
Alana
Is there anyone on your team that chews gum a lot?
Sid
We have a couple.
Ali
Yeah.
Alana
Whereas a real chomper of chewing.
Ali
Yeah.
Sid
Sarah One. Who else?
Ali
I. Yeah, I'm not really out there.
Sid
I don't know. Me neither.
Ali
But there's gum, like, at training. There's gum before games. Like, there's gum everywhere. People. I think you swap them out at some point, but.
Sid
Well, I suffer from dry mouth and I still don't even do the. The gum because I literally would choke.
Ali
Yeah. I would just be yelling and be like, we don't want any more medical emergencies with our team here.
Sid
Definitely not. Definitely not.
Ali
Is there a social account besides whatever's coming from you guys next that everyone should be following? Who's inspiring you? Who's making you laugh at bffr. Yeah.
Shannon
Bffr. And then for me, Alonamar, like, oh.
Sid
Yeah, we love her.
Shannon
Let's give it up for the empowering body positivity. She's fucking hilarious. I think everything that comes out of her mouth is great. And I'm so happy to see her so successful.
Ali
Alona for president. Yeah, please. Oh, my gosh. Well, this has been a blast. We are so excited for the rebrand. My request, please, please save. I know you probably don't have everything from the last 14 years, but someday when you have this new, exciting business and your rebrand and to look back, especially for those of us who have been with you from the Beginning will be.
Sid
Oh, geez. Oh.
Ali
So amazing to see the evolution of your business and of you and your story and. Yeah, just all the. All the tweets that you deleted or didn't delete and just all the stories. Honestly, those videos, as. As cringy as it may be now because it was a little harder back then with doing camcorders or filming something on a. On a digital camera.
Alana
Camcorders.
Sid
That was tough.
Ali
Hey, I was. I was filming on my camcorder with New Zealand, and I had a little eye flip. But, yes, it's safe. Save it all. Save it all. Thank you so much for joining us. We can't wait to get the call up to be on. On your show. But honestly, Shannon, Alana, we've been fans for a long time, so thank you for being on the BFFR show with us.
Shannon
Really, really cool moment to get to be on your show, and we're really super excited to see where the BFFR show goes because you guys are starting from a very similar point where it's like you just. You get your teammates giggling, and then you're like, all right, we could, like, amplify this, and people are going to want to listen in, and it's really exciting. We love it so far.
Ali
Thank you.
Sid
All right, so far, we've been doing it for 14 years.
Ali
Yeah, I know. We're going to be pretty old by the time we get to the rebrand.
Sid
I guess, but 100%. Yeah. Thank you guys so much, guys.
Ali
Hello.
Sid
Our favorite time is happening happy hour at Bar bffr, where we serve up our L's and dubs of the week and answer some of your burning questions or advice. We like that, too.
Ali
Yeah. Pour something strong and let's get into it. Join us. Sid, what's your win of the week?
Sid
My win of the week is that Sandy was here. My mom.
Ali
I love when Sandy's here.
Sid
I know. I know.
Ali
You. You feel way more relaxed when your mom is here.
Sid
I am. Even though sometimes we.
Ali
Yes, of course. As we all do with our mothers.
Sid
But just having her here and, like, you know, there's no one who understands me more than my mother, so.
Ali
And, I mean, you were solo coming to the games. You were like, yeah, mom took them to a birthday party.
Sid
Everyone's asking where the kids are. I'm like, with my mom, with grandma. What do you mean? What's your win of the week?
Ali
So the FIFA Club World cup is going on, and I was very lucky to be able to take my dad on Father's Day to See psg, Play Athletico Madrid. And I haven't been to the Rose bowl since the 99 World Cup Final.
Sid
Goodness. Speaking of that day, I get a text from Ali. Your ex is here. And I'm like, what the. I'm, like, calling her.
Ali
She FaceTimed me right away. I had, like, gone to get a snack, but what's going on?
Sid
And she sent me a picture of, like, a very, very old.
Ali
Oh, you're not gonna say who it is?
Sid
No, a very, very old friend who was there. And I said, you should ask him to come on bffr.
Ali
So you're saying it's. He's. He's not an ex.
Sid
He is an ex.
Ali
Okay.
Sid
But, like, we don't have any issues.
Ali
No, no, no. But it's not just an old friend. This was a very famous ex of yours who was sitting close by, but not close enough that I could actually.
Sid
Talk to this person. Yeah, I was like, go tell him you need to come on bffr.
Shannon
Yeah.
Ali
I was hoping, you know, since you actually know him.
Sid
No, it would have been better if you did it.
Ali
Yeah. I was getting pressured from Sid and Sandy to go up to him. Go up to him, but I can't say who it is.
Sid
No, no.
Ali
Oh, you had a. You had an interesting, Interesting loss of the week, didn't you?
Sid
Oh, yeah. This. I feel like stuff like this always happens to me. It's like, oh, I'm, like, so independent. Independent woman, super feminist. And then when I'm, like. When it comes to, like, just the little bits that, you know, you just don't want to do, I actually don't realize. But I was driving without plates and without registration.
Ali
I'm not sure how that's something you just don't realize.
Sid
I was like, surely it's. It's on there. But it wasn't. So the car dealership called me, and they're like, do you want to pick up your plates? Like, you're.
Ali
Oh, my. You're lucky that happened.
Sid
Your old ones are retired or not retired. Expired. Your old ones are retired and expired. And I was like, really? And they're like, yeah. And you don't have your registration, and.
Ali
There'S already a warrant out for your arrest. Yeah, according to last episode there was.
Sid
Because I forgot traffic school, but I told you about. Like, I just have to write a letter to the judge.
Ali
So you still haven't written the letter?
Sid
No.
Ali
We all knew that was gonna happen. No, we'll see you next Monday, and we'll still be talking about this.
Sid
Yeah.
Ali
Um. My loss. I mean, the. The dinner was not a loss. The dinner was great. I love celebrating Lucas. It was his birthday.
Sid
Yeah, we had fun.
Ali
It was. I mean, all worth every penny. But on Lucas's actual birthday, I took him to a steakhouse. And so this isn't a loss. More than. This is just a word of warning. Don't go to a restaurant where they don't post the prices on the menu.
Sid
Where'd you go?
Ali
Stk.
Sid
Oh, that's my spot.
Ali
Of course that's your spot. They have a great happy hour.
Sid
Happy hour.
Ali
Those prices were fun. Those prices are actually in jumbo font on the side of the Topanga Mall.
Sid
Yeah.
Ali
3, 6, and $9 specials during Happy hour. But you know what stops at 6:30 happy hour. You know, when you're going to eat your steak after 6:30.
Sid
Yeah. So.
Ali
So just. Yes. That was just my little piece of advice. If you're searching everywhere on the Internet, on social media, and there are no prices to be found, be prepared to pay a lot of money.
Sid
Did you have to really dig in?
Ali
I dug in, and again, I was happy to do so. And I was just like, order whatever you want. Like, let's go big. But, yeah, it's been a while since I have eaten at a restaurant where they don't. Don't have the. You can't. Because I love. I'm one of the girlies who loves to know what I'm gonna order ahead of time.
Sid
Oh. See, I like to look at the Yelp reviews, and then I like to look at the pictures of the food and see what's good.
Ali
Yeah.
Sid
And what I want. And then I go to the restaurant and I sit there and still don't know what I want. So I order everything. And we. We do that all the time.
Ali
Yes.
Sid
Yes.
Ali
You're quick at figuring out which cocktail you want, though.
Shannon
I love that about you.
Sid
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's true. It's very true.
Ali
Okay. Sid was responsible for the hot takes this week, so, you know, it's gonna be a bit unhinged.
Sid
Yeah, it will be.
Ali
What do you have for us? Said I'm really bad at hot takes, so.
Alana
Okay.
Sid
This, like, new thing about raw dogging flights, meaning you have, like, zero entertainment at all. No headphones, no tv, no movies, no iPad, no computer, no nothing. No book. I'm sorry, are you insane?
Ali
Why would anyone want to do that? And people are. You're like, I just raw dog. Like, JFK to lax. I'm like, there's something wrong with you.
Sid
Nothing. To be proud of.
Ali
Yeah. That's like, when the entertainment service doesn't work on a plane. Like, it's uproar. Like, it's a.
Sid
It's when WI Fi work. I want my money back, and this.
Ali
Is a choice that people are making.
Sid
Yeah, no, it's.
Ali
No, no, we. We don't approve.
Sid
Okay. Al knows that this is my least favorite thing, and I hate it with a passion. Okay. When people play devil's advocate. I'm sorry, why are you gaslighting me?
Ali
We don't believe that the devil needs someone to advocate for him.
Sid
But I'm also, like, I'm telling you my truth, and you're saying, let me play the devil's advocate. But what about my ass?
Ali
What about this? What if this, like.
Sid
No, that's not what I want to hear. If I wanted to hear that, I would go to my mom.
Ali
Yeah, yeah.
Sid
Stop playing devil's advocate.
Ali
No, it's really, really annoying.
Sid
It is.
Ali
Yeah.
Sid
I hate it.
Ali
You. You do have a. An ex who really, really loved devil's advocate.
Sid
Yeah.
Ali
Would text you a lot, being like, I'm just being devil's advocate here.
Sid
I'd be like, oh, you actually are the devil.
Ali
Yes.
Sid
Okay, now we have dating red flags.
Ali
Oh.
Sid
And, like, other things just in the, like, little dating space. Okay. If you're dating someone.
Ali
Yeah.
Sid
And they say, my ex is crazy. What are you thinking?
Ali
This happened to me. I got. I. I really. The red flag was so obvious.
Sid
It's so there. Yeah. Because what the did you do?
Ali
Yeah.
Sid
You did something.
Ali
Yeah. Yeah. He said, she's crazy. She's awful. She's obsessed with me. No, you actually hadn't broken up with her yet, and you were seeing both of us.
Sid
Yeah. Yeah, that. That's not ideal.
Ali
Yeah.
Sid
But yeah, anytime anyone tells you, like, my ex is crazy, just keep in the back of your mind that, like, maybe they're the problem.
Ali
Okay, there's definitely a problem.
Sid
There is definitely a problem.
Ali
Okay. Ooh, ooh. This one. This one. We don't agree about this.
Sid
No, we don't.
Ali
This hot take. Say it. This is the. The women out there.
Sid
This is for girls. Girls. Girls. Okay.
Ali
Okay.
Sid
When a girl or a woman says, I don't really have, like, girlfriends, like, I just get along better with guys. You're a pick me. You're a pick me.
Ali
I don't think that's fair.
Sid
It's fair to me.
Ali
How many guy friends did you have, like, in high school? Weren't you mostly friends with guys?
Sid
Yeah, because I also was A tomboy playing sports. So, yeah, those were my friends. But I'm saying, as a grown adult, you don't have any girlfriends, and you like the male attention. For what? For what? That's what you need the girls for.
Ali
I mean, we. We do talk a lot about our, like, female friendships.
Sid
Yes.
Ali
And the importance of that. But I don't know, are we at an advantage here because we play women's sports? Like, what if you're in an industry and you vibe with the guys? Like, there's probably some bitches out there. Like, wait.
Sid
Work husband. Work wife. Try me. That is insane.
Ali
Yeah. Your partner isn't having a work wife.
Sid
No. No work wife. I'm coming. I'm coming to work with you. I will be your work wife.
Ali
Now.
Sid
What do you think if Lucas had a work wife? Come on.
Ali
So all of Lucas's friends are my friends.
Sid
Exactly.
Ali
But he goes and, like, plays pickle with Zell, and I'm like, that's so amazing. Yeah, like, that's. I know, I know, but that's why it's a little bit. It's unfair.
Sid
Imagine if you didn't know this girl, you know, and this. They're both. Oh, yeah. Wife, work husband. I'd be like, I don't think so.
Ali
Yeah, I mean, I. I have had a lot of work wives, like, someone on my team. And I mean, Lucas is kind of like. Like, I trust you, and, like, I know you're straight, but also, like, a lot of people think you're gay. And I was like, babe, that's just how it's gonna be.
Sid
Yeah.
Ali
And always he embraced it, so.
Sid
Yeah.
Ali
But, yeah, I would definitely have. Have a hard time if he was spending a lot of time with a woman at work and I didn't really.
Sid
Know her and calling her his work, work wife.
Shannon
Yeah.
Sid
I'd be coming.
Ali
Yeah.
Sid
Into play with that.
Ali
Yeah. Only one wifey.
Sid
No. 100%. You don't want to, like, have to show up to jobs.
Ali
Like, I don't want to do your job, and my job.
Sid
I don't. I don't have. I don't want to do that. So one and done. No work wife. No work husband. It's weird. That's my hot take.
Alana
Okay.
Ali
Okay. Well, on that note, I think it's. It's probably time for last call, so let's. Let's hear what you had to say this week.
Shannon
Hey, y'.
E
All, It's Mary from Maryland. Loving the show, having so much fun, listening, being a longtime fan. So my question is, I'm Loving all of the tunnel looks. Love that by nwsl, especially Angel City. WMA is like, really embracing that. Just a way to showcase their personalities. So take me through it. Do you all have stylists? How do you plan out the looks? What does your closet look like? Do you rent your clothes? Would love to know. I don't think I've ever seen y' all repeat an outfit. So keep doing what you're doing and love to go behind the scenes.
Ali
Bye.
Sid
I just want to say a couple episodes ago, I said I was a sustainable girly and that I was going to start wearing things over.
Ali
She lied.
Sid
No, no. I was at Lucas's birthday. Wore those jeans before, those shoes.
Ali
Wore the same jeans once before to the same bag.
Sid
I. You know, No, I did not.
Ali
I have had to rip tags off Sid's clothes because she's come straight from the mall in a brand new outfit.
Sid
Well, my issue is, like, I have a vision. And then I put the vision on and I was like, that was stupid. And then I'm, like, stressing, and now.
Ali
I'm like, okay, well, Mary from Maryland, to answer your question, Sid puts a lot of thought into her outfits, and then when it's time to leave, hates them. And then buy something fabulous and looks like a million bucks. And it works every game for the rest of us, it is quite stressful. I've pretty much given up. I love a statement T. I borrow some stuff from Sid, but I just have way too much to worry about than my outfit. I also have to train on game day because I'm injured, so I don't have that much time. But I do agree that it is very cool that players are showcasing their personalities and, like, embracing this trend. The wnba. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Like, I'm blown away by some of these outfits. The women all look incredible. Everyone. I love that people have different styles. I'm never going to be someone to judge someone's fit style. Someone's style. But Sydney LaRue is absolutely the tunnel fit queen, the icon. I think we did a poll, and it was like, whose closet would you want to have, like, from any, like, feature female athlete? Everyone said, Sid, duh.
Sid
Oh, thank you.
Ali
Yeah, yeah. But no, I. I feel like it's kind of more recent of a trend for us.
Sid
Yeah. But LA is la.
Ali
Yeah.
Sid
Like, of course. New York does a good job.
Ali
Yeah.
Sid
LA does a good job. Yeah. In between. It's good.
Ali
All right, Sid, close us out here.
Sid
That's it for today's episode of bffr.

BFFR with Sydney Leroux & Ali Riley
Episode: Soccer Girl Problems, Raw-Dogging Flights, & Running Into Syd’s Ex
Release Date: July 21, 2025
Sydney Leroux (Sid) and Ali Riley kick off the episode with their signature playful banter, touching on personal experiences and setting a relaxed tone for the show. Ali shares an update about their upcoming NWSL-mandated break, mentioning, “I just trained with the team for the first time... she hit 104% of her max speed, which means she's faster than she has been in three years” (02:11).
The conversation takes a turn towards health, specifically focusing on pelvic floor health. Ali introduces her pelvic floor specialist, Dr. Cappuccino, stating, “Dr. Cappuccino, she's been working with me now for almost a year... she’s been tending to my knees. It does not feel good” (03:43). Sid expresses interest in seeing a pelvic floor specialist, joking about concerns with “the anus” (05:19).
Sydney and Ali discuss their recent initiative wearing Immigrant City football club T-shirts, created in response to riots in Los Angeles. Ali emphasizes their philanthropic intent: “the shirts that are being sold, a hundred percent of the net proceeds are going to Camino Immigration Services” (07:50). They address the negative feedback received online, with Sid remarking, “But also, like, you looked at that picture and then you were like, no one's there” (06:54). Ali counters the criticism by highlighting the collective generosity behind the project.
The hosts introduce Shannon and Alana, the brains behind the popular Twitter account “Soccer Girl Problems.” Shannon reflects on the organic growth of their platform: “It was truly just a preseason bonding experience to make a Twitter... the community's very small” (14:05). Alana adds, “We've gone back and we've deleted some tweets that maybe you shouldn't have put up... it was like relatable” (14:49).
Shannon and Alana delve into the inception of “Soccer Girl Problems,” recounting their first viral video in 2012 where they humorously portrayed common soccer-related issues. Alana shares, “We made this website... and ordered like 300 T-shirts. Didn’t even think to put a cap on the T-shirts” (16:22). They discuss the challenges of scaling their merchandise, such as manually handling thousands of packages and the initial lack of professional branding.
The guests discuss their collaboration with Football Co and Divisa to elevate their brand after 14 years of self-managed growth. Shannon states, “We recently joined forces with Football Co and Divisa just to help us get to the next level” (20:25). They highlight the enduring relevance of their content, noting, “These problems aren't going anywhere, and they will never be less, you know, funny and just something to commiserate over” (20:27).
Funniest Player They've Interviewed: Alana mentions Christy Mewes, recalling a humorous mishap during recording where Christy forgot to record (31:21).
Soccer Girl Crush: Shannon fervently supports Alana Kennedy, calling her “the coolest soccer girl ever” (31:47).
Worst Merch Idea: Alana shares a near-launch of a high-heel logo for their merch line, which they ultimately decided against due to impracticality (32:10).
Soccer Trend to Retire: Shannon passionately argues against tiny shin guards, comparing them to “putting a tampon in the front of your sock” (32:52).
Sid and Ali engage in a lively discussion on dating red flags, emphasizing skepticism when someone mentions their ex is “crazy.” Sid advises, “Maybe they're the problem” (46:15). They also debate the dynamics of having “work husbands” or “work wives,” with Sid firmly stating, “No work wife. No work husband. It's weird” (49:34).
Mary from Maryland poses a question about the hosts' styles and wardrobe management. Sid humorously admits to struggling with outfit planning: “Sid puts a lot of thought into her outfits, and then when it's time to leave, hates them” (51:04). Ali complements Sid as “the tunnel fit queen, the icon” (52:38). They encourage listeners to follow their social media for more behind-the-scenes content.
Sid and Ali wrap up the episode by thanking their guests Shannon and Alana, expressing excitement for their rebranding journey. Sid hints at personal anecdotes to share in future episodes, including a humorous encounter with an ex at a game: “And I might go to Dr. Cappuccino and I might come back and tell you how it goes” (54:06).
Ali on Pelvic Floor Health:
“Dr. Cappuccino, she's been working with me now for almost a year... she’s been tending to my knees. It does not feel good.” (03:43)
Shannon on Organic Growth:
“We just air our dirty laundry out on this Twitter account... every player, every college player comes from a club team and a high school team.” (14:05)
Alana on Viral Content:
