Bill
welcome to Bill and Juliana the Podcast.
Juliana
Hey guys. Welcome to the premiere episode of Bill and Juliana. Today we are so excited. Not only is it our first episode, but we are kicking off this podcast with someone we are both huge fans of. He is one of the biggest standup comedians in the world.
Bill
Biggest.
Juliana
He sells out arenas. He has huge Netflix specials like stay hungry and aren't you embarrassed? I mean, he is literally a comedy genius and he has built a comedy empire out of family frustration and pointing out all these things that we act like are normal but are not normal at all. And he just is literally one of the funniest people on the planet. And he is here today and a
Bill
great guy, great family man.
Juliana
Yes.
Bill
Great husband, great father.
Juliana
Yes. So Sebastian Maniscalco is joining us on this show and not only are we gonna talk about his life, but also we're gonna talk about something that Bill and I disagree on, which is when you travel, do you stay at your in laws or do you stay in a hotel? So everyone welcome Sebastian Maniscalco to the show.
Bill
This is our premiere episode and Juliana has been a super fan since the very beginning. And I wanna tell a quick story. So this is before you were selling out arenas and, you know, doing the major tours. He was at the Rosemont Theater and I somehow was able to get tickets and we got invited backstage and I've never seen Juliana react the way she did to meeting you. She's interviewed every megastar on the earth.
Juliana
Yes.
Bill
Now this is before you were a megastar. And she was so nervous, panicking.
Juliana
Do you remember this?
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah, of course I do.
Bill
Like, I'd never seen anything like it. I brought you a bottle of red wine and like, I couldn't speak. It was the craziest thing.
Juliana
Well, can I just say one thing, though? You have to understand, though, this goes way back, because I was a huge fan of yours during your first, I think, first or second Netflix special. And when friends would come over to our house, I couldn't wait for dinner to finish because I would then turn you on.
Bill
I thought she was on your payroll.
Juliana
And I would say, I'd go, have you guys heard of Sebastian Maniscacco yet? We have a special queued up for you, and we would all sit and watch your specials. And I couldn't get enough of them. And so when Bill surprised me with tickets to see you, I was so excited. And then when I come in to meet you, and I've interviewed every celebrity on the red carpet, and when I came in to meet you, do you remember, I couldn't even put two words together.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Oh, it was very flattering. It was very nice that you guys came back. And, you know, it's always nice to meet people that really are passionate about the material.
Juliana
So did I act goofy? Be honest.
Sebastian Maniscalco
I don't think it was, like, so out of bounds.
Ad Host
Really?
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah, I mean, I'm kind of used to that type of thing. Yeah, we're talking.
Juliana
Oh, of course.
Bill
Please.
Sebastian Maniscalco
That's the joke.
Bill
Well, hold on. The story gets better. So fast forward 10 years later, we're in Cabo. Sebastian's down in Cabo on vacation. Sebastian and I communicate occasionally. We talk about, you know, Italy, whatever. Chicago. We go, you know, Chicago.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Guys, I think I interrupt you. We don't communicate about that. We communicate because I'm kind of fascinated about your real estate holdings.
Ad Host
Yes.
Sebastian Maniscalco
You're always all over the country and this and that. Always kind of curious about what you're doing in that arena. I.
Bill
Happy to share. Happy to share.
Juliana
Yes.
Bill
So we invite Sebastian and his wonderful wife to lunch at the place where we have a house in Cabo. We're sitting at lunch and about an hour in, she's in a 20, she's doing a 20 minute standup bit. Trying to impress you.
Juliana
No, I wasn't.
Bill
And I'm like, honey, who do you think? Like, you thought you were a comedian trying to, like, tell him stand up, Jerry. I don't remember everyone at the table. Jay and Mark, human. And they were like, julian, who are you? Does that happen a lot to you where people want to just try to make you laugh and.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah. I mean, there tends to be some impersonations along the way. I had a person come up to me recently and Said, man, we saw you in Caroline's comedy club and you. And right away I knew it wasn't me because I only performed at Caroline's once. And I just knew the night he was talking about, I wasn't part of the show, but I just let him, you know. Oh, yeah, I remember that night, too. So.
Juliana
No way.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah.
Juliana
Do you remember? So do you remember the people that
Bill
they come up to me. I voted for you on the Apprentice, Mike. The audience didn't have a vote, but I just let him go. I'm like, thank you so much for
Juliana
voting for me on the Apprentice.
Bill
That wasn't an option.
Juliana
But I remember when Sebastian was coming to visit us at our place in Cabo, and I was so excited. I was picking out my outfit, all getting excited to meet him and his wife in person again. And then you walk out the house. I said, where are you going? He goes, oh, I'm going on a boat trip. And I said, we have lunch with Sebastian and his wife. Do you remember this? And he goes, oh, yeah, I'm gonna have the boat drop me off to meet you guys. And I go, you're gonna just swim to shore?
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah.
Juliana
And he goes, yes, I'm gonna swim to shore. I go, aren't you gonna be dressed up and look nice? He's like, what are you talking about? So then Sebastian shows up with his wife. They look nice.
Bill
I look nice to the nines. I mean, like, matching shorts with a silk shirt.
Sebastian Maniscalco
It's a set.
Bill
Set look like Gucci or Mezlo. I mean, this guy Lana had a
Juliana
beautiful hat on to the dress. I was dressed up. And then Bill pulls up in this boat. You jump off the boat, you towel off, you show up all wet. I do remember this.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Well, I was fascinated that he was, like, swimming the shore. I mean, how cool is that? He's coming out of the ocean like a shark onto shore, and then he sits down and has lunch. I mean, that's like. That's pretty stunning. Thank you.
Bill
Yeah, but I wish I could do that.
Sebastian Maniscalco
I wish I could, like, say, I'm going to swim to shore and I'll meet you for a sandwich.
Juliana
That was basically what he did. And then we're sitting there and remember, Duke was at the pool and Sebastian kept looking off. Do you remember this resident?
Bill
Duke was playing at the beach with rough waves. Go ahead.
Juliana
They weren't that rough. Go ahead. No, you finished. No, really.
Bill
And Sebastian's like, I can tell who the real parent is here. Your son's been down at the beach. For the last half an hour. And you haven't looked over once. Giuliana, you're having your margarita, telling stories, and Bill's looked back about 90 times.
Juliana
I was having a great time. Do you remember this?
Bill
Your son's about to get stuck in the undertow.
Juliana
No, he was.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Because I am the. I'm the parent that's always honed, and my wife is kind of like you. Oh. We're having fun, and then, you know, the kid's drowning.
Bill
Right.
Sebastian Maniscalco
So. So, yeah, I just picked up on that. That you were very. Out of the two of you, are you more concerned about the whereabouts? 100%, yeah.
Bill
Okay, grades, teachers, parent teacher conferences.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Who's got the time? She's rescuing five dogs.
Bill
That's true.
Juliana
But he is. He's better. You're better. Like, you make him brush his teeth. Like, I just feel like you can skip a night. Who cares?
Sebastian Maniscalco
Okay.
Bill
That doesn't work for me, but can I say something?
Juliana
I find that interesting, Sebastian. Because I'm Italian. You're Italian. And I feel like the Italian parents, like, at least I think that's why I'm just like, ah, whatever, he's fine. Like, he'll be fine.
Bill
I don't. You know, I don't think Sebastian's like that.
Sebastian Maniscalco
I don't know if that's a cultural thing. A lot of the Italian parents I grew up with are very, kind of, like, strict. Yeah. Yeah. With their kids, you know?
Bill
Yeah.
Juliana
I think I'm the youngest. So my parents were like, I think
Bill
you're just trying to justify the laissez faire.
Juliana
Because I came late. Like, they didn't care anymore. They were like, over. I was a. Like, my parent. My. They planned. My brother and sister. I think I came late. They were like, are you the oldest?
Sebastian Maniscalco
I'm the oldest.
Juliana
See?
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yes.
Bill
I'm the youngest.
Juliana
So he had more of the helicopter parenting, and I think I had more of the laissez faire parenting.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Okay.
Juliana
You see what I mean?
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah. Maybe that's it.
Juliana
And then we took that into our lives.
Bill
Speaking of family, I know I've made it. Sebastian's mom follows me on Facebook and will direct message me.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Oh, yeah, she DMs.
Bill
She'll direct. We direct message each other.
Juliana
No, she does not.
Bill
Yeah, I'm gonna send her some mama to pandy.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah, she. She has a. She's messaging people that are like, you know, Mario Lopez. Hey, what's going on? Yeah, it's like, wow, what are you doing?
Bill
No, I feel like I've made it like, you know.
Juliana
Wait, your mom doesn't follow me.
Sebastian Maniscalco
She doesn't? No, no.
Bill
You know, maybe it's a Chicago. Sorry.
Sebastian Maniscalco
She's Bill's friend.
Juliana
Did you know this? That she follows Bill?
Sebastian Maniscalco
That might have been mentioned in one of the many conversations we have about Facebook and how she messages celebrities.
Juliana
Hilarious.
Bill
Are they still in Chicago, your mom and dad?
Sebastian Maniscalco
No, she's here.
Bill
She lives here.
Sebastian Maniscalco
She's here? Yeah, she's outside.
Bill
Oh, great.
Juliana
Get out. No, she's here to see you, though. She's here to see you. That's why Sebastian's here, because his mom wanted to come meet you in person. Wait, Sebastian. So we're so excited because this is our premiere episode of the show. And so our show's different from a lot of other podcasts because we interview famous people like you, but we focus on a topic, right? Like a question that a lot of people are interested in. So the topic for this podcast with you today is something we have argued over, Bill and I, and it's. When you travel, do you stay with the in laws or do you stay at a hotel? Okay, so I'd love to know your opinion, but first, let's start with ours. So I personally like to stay with my family or his family and the in laws because I think it's a beautiful thing. It's an opportunity for us to spend time together and be more, like, intimate with each other, like hanging out like we were kids, you know, back when we were kids. Like having that relationship again that you don't have anymore as an adult. So I think it's like, precious time spent. Why not? And also, I like to save money on hotels. Bill, on the other hand.
Bill
Quite true.
Juliana
Loves a hotel. So why don't you tell him where you stand?
Bill
It's not even a question. I mean, I'm going to be 55 years old next week. I'm staying at a hotel. And I'll tell you why. Because when we first got engaged, her brother Pashkwale invited us to come out to dc.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Did you just say Pasquale?
Bill
That's his name, yeah.
Juliana
My brother Pasquale.
Sebastian Maniscalco
I always said it. Pasquale. Is it? Is it. Is that the correct pronunciation?
Ad Host
How did he say it?
Sebastian Maniscalco
Pasquale?
Juliana
Pasquale.
Sebastian Maniscalco
No, I. I heard.
Juliana
How did he say it?
Sebastian Maniscalco
I heard Pashkwale.
Ad Host
Did we hear.
Bill
Well, I call him Posh, so I just assumed it was.
Juliana
Well, how do you say it?
Bill
Pasquale.
Juliana
That is weird, the way he said it.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Okay, Pasquale.
Bill
There you go.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah. Pasquale.
Juliana
Pasquale.
Bill
So Pasquale.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Okay.
Bill
Invites us over.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Okay, Gotcha.
Bill
And she. Juan insists we stay with them. We just got engaged. And he has this little bedroom above the garage where he has his Ferrari. I'll tell that story in a minute. And the next morning, I just flew in. I was jet lagged. I was on the road a lot. I sleep until about 9:00'.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Clock.
Bill
I come down, I go into the kitchen. I've got my basketball shorts on. I sleep, basketball shorts. I had no shirt on. And the whole dining room's packed with people. They didn't tell me about the brunch they were having. It was her ex boyfriend's family, the car dealer. The guy was a car salesman in dc.
Juliana
Well, they're like family to us.
Bill
And I'm like, hello, I'm gonna meet the Fockers. My hair is all messed up. I got. And this brother of hers invited the ex boyfriend's family to come over for brunch.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Great people.
Bill
It was a little weird.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Wow. Yeah.
Juliana
Yeah. So I. I had woken up a little early. I. I kind of knew about the lunch, but I didn't know it was starting that early. And I walked downstairs, so thank God, you know, I had, like, a nice outfit on. And so when Bill came down, I was sitting there having coffee with everyone and. And we're like, hey, Bill. And Bill has never, to this day, let me live this down. He's like, how could you have done this to me? It was like, meet the Fockers. I walked in, this whole, your ex's family's there. He wasn't there, but the family, the mom, the family was there, and the niece, who I hadn't seen since she was a baby. It was nice reconnecting, and Bill was very upset, and he said, we're never staying with your family again.
Bill
And that was it.
Sebastian Maniscalco
So you no longer stay with your family. You stay at hotels. What about your family? Do we stay with it?
Bill
Hotels.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Okay, so you're in la. Do you have any family here?
Bill
Yes.
Juliana
Hold on one second. We do stay with the family. He said that? And then we stay with my family, too, half the time. But he hates it and he kind of gets away. What? We stayed with them in the beginning, more after my brother. No, no. You never stayed with my.
Bill
No.
Juliana
How about when we went to my house?
Bill
I tried. I couldn't fit in that Laura Ashley bed. I went in the bedroom of her family's house. I thought she had passed away because it was a shrine. Nothing had been touched. In my bedroom. And I'm like. It was literally as if she'd passed away 30 years ago.
Juliana
Why?
Bill
And there were candles lit. And her old. She went to some modeling school. Was that place Barbizon? Barbizon.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Who did Barbizon? Yeah.
Juliana
Did you.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Well, it was similar where they come to the. God, they come to a hotel. Like, we're coming to the Hyatt Regency this weekend. If you think you got what it
Bill
takes, come down and $299. We're gonna get you dialed in.
Juliana
You did that?
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Not Barbizon, but something star or something, right?
Juliana
Like, become a star. And you. And did you get in? Did they get you?
Sebastian Maniscalco
No. No.
Juliana
They didn't hire you?
Sebastian Maniscalco
No. What I got out of that was a photographer.
Juliana
That's right.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Because I didn't have the proper photos. Like, my mother took the photo and go, take this in. I love it. And next thing you know, I hired a photographer to take photos of me off the. I think it was the Kennedy Expressway near Rockford, I believe. And that was in a field with, like, wheat. And I had a dango tea on. I was, like, through the weeds. And that was kind of my headshot for the first iteration of my career.
Juliana
And how many jobs did they get you?
Sebastian Maniscalco
Zero. Nothing.
Juliana
You had, like, dandelions.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Dandelions.
Juliana
Beautiful. Yeah, I have those. They put it on me at Barbizon. One shot was with a beret. I had a beautiful beret. And then another one. They told me, you're not a Runway model. You're a catalog model. And they said. And I said, great. Can I do, like, beautiful couture dresses? And they said, no, you're more athletic. Meanwhile, I was not athletic. And they stuck me in, like, a oversized top and, like, a little striped tennis set with giant shoes. And they had me. They threw balls at me, tennis balls. And I swung with a racket. It was the worst pictures. And I took them to New York to modeling agencies. I mean, I.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Did you get in with those photos?
Juliana
They laughed me out of there. But finally, E hired me. But not with those pictures. But that was years later. But bottom line is, it didn't work. I mean, I went to Barbizon. I spent a lot of money.
Bill
Well, the plumber's hanging in the bedroom with all the other items from 80s. Like, 83, 85. Like, it was. So anyway, we don't stay with the inside. And I love her parents. They're amazing. Love going over there for dinner when they cook. It's amazing. But I just feel like at this stage of my life, I can handle the cost of the hotel room, wake up when I want to wake up. I don't need to hear her dad clearing his throat at 5:30 in the morning in the room next door to me.
Juliana
He blows his nose.
Bill
Throat.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Let me flip it around. Do you have house guests? Do people stay with you? Yes, and that's okay.
Bill
Our home is equipped. I think it's better equipped for guests. I don't know.
Juliana
What do you mean? Like we. Like what?
Sebastian Maniscalco
Well, listen, regardless of the amount, like, oh, you have guest rooms and maybe there's room to have guests. Right? But there's a certain behavior that goes along with being a house guest and being a host. And that's where I have the problem now. You come down right away. I was bothered that you're coming down in your basketball shorts. Right. Like it's like it's your house. Right?
Bill
Right.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Anytime I stay anywhere, which is, I wouldn't say rare, but there are times I don't present myself in the kitchen or whatever. No one knows what I sleep in, you know what I'm saying? I come down like it's almost a job, like ready to work.
Bill
Got it, got it.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Showered, clean, brushed the whole thing.
Bill
Fair enough.
Sebastian Maniscalco
So I have a problem with people who stay with me who are already in the kitchen before I get up. Now you don't start using the facilities unless the homeowner is up and running. Right. I don't want to come down. You're making coffee already?
Juliana
Yeah, he's right.
Sebastian Maniscalco
So that's number one.
Juliana
Yes.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Number two. And it's funny that I'm on this show right now because I'm going back home to stay with my father. So this is me, my wife, my two kids and my sister is going to stay with my father. She has three kids and a husband. So that's nine people in the house I grew up in three bedroom. Three bedroom, yeah. So we're gonna have people sleeping on the floor, air mattresses, the whole thing for three days. We thought it'd be fun, go back, stay with dad and like, you know, get up and have that experience. But outside of that, I. Well, you know, I stay with my in laws too when we go to Florida.
Juliana
What's that like when you stay with the in laws?
Sebastian Maniscalco
My mother in law is an amazing host. So she's the type of person that will have in the room, you know, razors, if you forgot razors, shaving cream, hairspray, whatever you need.
Bill
It's the peninsula or the four Seats.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah. It's a hotel feel.
Juliana
Yeah.
Sebastian Maniscalco
So we're not kind of hurting for, you know, towels. Okay, but I understand. I understand. It's another thing, the towel thing. At somebody else's house, generally speaking, you're using kind of their everyday towels when you stay there.
Juliana
Yeah.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Right. Which. Which could be a little, you know, I don't know. Using somebody else's towel. Even though. If it's washed.
Juliana
Even if it's washed.
Bill
Even. I mean, what. But I don't even want to wait.
Juliana
What about hotels?
Bill
I've seen guys at the gym and what they do with those towels, it's unbelievable.
Sebastian Maniscalco
They do a floss job.
Bill
Yeah.
Sebastian Maniscalco
You don't want that.
Ad Host
It's full.
Bill
Full on.
Juliana
What do you guys think happens at a hotel?
Bill
I don't.
Juliana
I'd rather know what happens to towels.
Ad Host
I'd rather not think about that.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Listen, I worked at a hotel right down the street here at Four Seasons, so I'm aware of hotel. So did Allison. So at the hotel, for some reason, I don't know why this is. How many people have been sleeping on those beds? Right. And then how many people have been using those towels? But for whatever reason, when you walk into a hotel, I feel that they just constructed the room. Right. This is the first time for everything in there. Right. But when I go to somebody's house, I feel that here. I went to somebody's house the other two weeks ago and didn't know the person. It was like a friend of a friend. I sat down on the couch and. You ever do one of these jobs where you put your hand in between the cushions and it was like. Like, I just. There's, like, a bunch of ruffles in there. I cannot feel comfortable now staying at somebody's house when I. I see those types of things.
Juliana
You mean there were, like, crumbs?
Ad Host
Like, you felt crumbs.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Go home.
Juliana
Yeah.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Tonight and take the cushions off your couch. Even. Even the people watching.
Juliana
So you're saying that when you go to someone's house. Lord knows they might even have put the towels and sheets on delicate cycle. Quick. Barely any detergent. Definitely no bleach in a hotel. They're dumping. Dumping bleach in there. Chemicals.
Bill
And I feel like those industrial washers are at a much higher temperature and.
Juliana
Yeah. Thousand degrees. Like, just, like, cleaning every germ out of that.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yes.
Juliana
And the towels, too. And at a person's house, you know, it could be on a rapid wash. They're trying to save.
Bill
They could have just done a fluff and fold they could have done a possible. Yeah, the quick.
Sebastian Maniscalco
They might have not changed the sheets out since the last person slept in that room. You know what I'm saying? So that's what I have a problem with.
Juliana
So does your. When you guys travel, you and your wife, does she ever. So do. Are you guys on the same page, you and Lana, or does she like to stay at someone's house or doesn't mind staying? Are you guys just past that?
Sebastian Maniscalco
Last time I went to Thanksgiving, we got a hotel room because we're. You know what? We felt it was better for both sides. Got kids now they're nine and seven and they're like active and they need a place to kind of run around. At my in laws house, there's not really like lawn or anything that kind of like spread your wings. We figured out we stayed by the beach. We'll go by the beach, make a sandcastle. They'll be in the ocean. There's activities.
Juliana
Yeah, right.
Sebastian Maniscalco
But the first night we were going to stay with my, my in laws and they, I think felt a little. They felt bad that we weren't staying with them.
Bill
You checked out of their house.
Sebastian Maniscalco
So we got the. I'm not going to say it was a guilt trip, but we. They did say, hey, you know, you don't have to spend all that money, could stay here.
Juliana
Yeah.
Sebastian Maniscalco
And I didn't want to be the guy, you know, like you kind of driving a wedge between her and her family. Right. Because when you're not around, I'm sure the mother's talking to you.
Bill
And it's always my fault.
Juliana
It is your fault.
Bill
Bill doesn't want to go here. Bill.
Juliana
But it is. My mom says, she goes, juliana, I know it's Bill. And I said, yeah, it's Bill.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah. So I didn't want to. I didn't want them to have that it's Sebastian conversation. So we ended up scrapping a hotel and we stayed with. With my in laws, which was. Which was fine.
Juliana
But not your preference.
Bill
Did you refund on that or. No, I did. You did.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Okay. We got a refund, right? Yes, we did.
Juliana
Good job. Good job. Because Sebastian, we're visiting right now. And so I wanted to stay with my sister. She has a lovely house in Brentwood. Lovely. My parents happen to be there now. It's my mom's 84th birthday this week, so we're all staying, you know. Well, we were all going to stay there. I've got. She has four kids, my sister. One's graduating from USC this week, so we're all. We were all going to stay there. She's got a beautiful house. And then this one, I love you. But he goes, there's no way I'm staying at the house. And I said, what do you mean you don't. He goes, there's a hotel nearby. I'll stay anywhere. I can't. I'll go visit them all day. But I can't stay at the house. I just. I'm past that stage of my life. He said, yeah. And he said, I just. I can't. And so I had to tell my family. My sister goes, I got your room ready for you. This is last week.
Bill
I. I was not aware of that conversation.
Juliana
And I said, monic. I said, it's okay, Monica. We're gonna, you know, stay at a hotel. And she goes, is it Bill? And I said, what am I supposed to say? She knows? And I said, yeah, it's Bougie Bill. We call him. We call him Bougie Bill behind his back. So Bougie Bill can't stay, God forbid, you know, in a room that's not like 62 degrees and dark shades, you know, like the. What do they call the blackout shades, you know? And so I just feel like. Don't you think, though, at some point, like, maybe put it aside. It's a birthday, it's a graduation. Like, suck it up a little bit and be with the family. Like, we love you and we want to cook food for you, and it's offensive to us. My family's very offended. The Italians get offended.
Sebastian Maniscalco
No, they do. They get offended. And I know where you're coming from, but I also know where you're coming from. Guy's 55 years old, right? He don't want to be sleeping, you know, in some strange room with whatever, the sun coming in. Guy's a mogul, all right? He needs to sleep. He's got to wake up and talk to real estate people. He's acquiring land, all right? And he can't be around the talking and this and that. He's on calls. He's got to go outside. Right. I find that I do a lot of business when I'm staying with my in laws and I'm doing a lot of errands because I want to get out of the house.
Bill
Yes.
Sebastian Maniscalco
So I'll, like, go. I gotta go get coffee and then I'll sit in the parking lot for an hour. Right? That's what we do when we go to. Everybody's doing this.
Bill
True.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah, Everybody that has in laws. Nothing against the in laws. I just need time by myself without a lot of, like, a lot of stuff coming at me in the morning. So I'm sure he'd probably tell you. It's gonna happen.
Juliana
Yeah.
Sebastian Maniscalco
How long you here?
Bill
I'm leaving Wednesday night. She's staying.
Sebastian Maniscalco
I'm gonna stay Wednesday night. So tomorrow, right? He's gonna go. I got this two hour call. All right. I gotta find somewhere quiet. I gotta go back to iHeart. I'll have the call there.
Juliana
Yeah.
Sebastian Maniscalco
He needs to. He's gonna tell you something to get the fuck out of the house.
Bill
I think it comes at. The older you get, the more you wanna be alone. I don't know if you found that you're in your late 40s.
Sebastian Maniscalco
I'm 52 years old. Gonna be 53 in July. As you grow older, you need to. He knew how old I was.
Juliana
So were you born 72?
Sebastian Maniscalco
73.
Bill
Yeah.
Juliana
I'm 74. When's your birthday?
Sebastian Maniscalco
July 8th.
Juliana
Oh, my gosh. That's my nephew's birthday. Cancer.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Cancer, yeah.
Juliana
Good for you. What's Lana?
Bill
Virgo.
Sebastian Maniscalco
September 6th.
Juliana
She very organized.
Sebastian Maniscalco
She's very particular. Of what? How she wants things. She's very. Yeah.
Bill
I love her art, by the way.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Virgo.
Juliana
Yeah, thank you. Virgo's also. It's like our son is a Virgo.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Like, perfectionists.
Juliana
Yeah. So Bill goes back Wednesday, and because we're not staying with the family and we're in a hotel, I'm gonna move in with the family. See, that's a compromise, Right? So I'm moving in with the family Wednesday through. Well, that's another bona contention. We won't talk about it. But Bill's birthday, Saturday. And I said. And he said, you should come back to Chicago for my birthday. And I said, but I'm not. I didn't get to see my family while I was here. I also need to see my family. So we're trying to figure that out.
Bill
This isn't marriage counseling right now. I don't think Sebastian's qualified.
Juliana
Do you care anymore? Like, if Lana's like, I'm staying with my family, or would you be like, you need to come home for my birthday? I mean, we haven't really talked about it.
Bill
Well, you didn't even bring it up. And I said, well, you know, my birthday's Saturday. And you totally had forgotten it was my birthday. And I reminded you.
Sebastian Maniscalco
No, that's okay.
Bill
That's okay.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Well, listen, listen. No, I mean, I'm not. I'm not so big on birthdays, but we do like to celebrate everybody's birthday as a family.
Juliana
Yeah.
Sebastian Maniscalco
So is there a possibility that you go back to Chicago for the man's birthday?
Juliana
Yeah, of course.

Juliana
Okay, but going back to in laws. Yes, in laws.
Bill
I'm going to be Ash and I are in agreement that their home is beautiful. I love it. I just feel more comfortable not sleeping in the in the shrine room with candles, in the Laura Ashley bedding that is all matching with the wallpaper. And I'm six foot three. The bed's made for someone who's five foot seven so my legs stick out through the wrought iron at the end of the bed. It's not really comfortable for me.
Juliana
It's the same bedroom that I designed as a little girl at 11 years old. It is the exact same bedroom when I was 11. It's still this bedroom. And so we have Laura Ashes wall trim with the same matching drapes with the same matching pillows and everything. And my parents were going to give him the bedroom when we were engaged because they didn't want us to sleep together yet because it wasn't official. And so I was going to sleep in the twin room, which was very nice of them to give you that bed. And he refused to take the bed because his legs went through the bars at the end of the foot of the bed. And because he thought the room was creepy because it was all Laura Ashley'd out and stuff. Which by the way that, that, that rose print is coming back in style. But whatever. I don't even want to go there. But bottom line is, so he doesn't like to stay with the in laws. You don't like to stay?
Bill
I love them. I love your mom and dad. I just love my own space.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Okay, but. But I'm hearing kind of one sided. Is your parents still around?
Bill
My, My mom is.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Okay. Are we staying with her?
Bill
No.
Juliana
Yes. We used to. We used to. Before she moved to an apartment. We always stayed at her house. And I'm so. But Sebastian, I'm like that, like I'm very much like family compromise. Like I had no problem staying in that room. It was hot.
Bill
But 15 years ago there was an old school computer much younger.
Juliana
Bottom line is, you know, there wasn't fancy. But I like staying with the family and I stay with his sister. But I'm like that I can stay. I can like I can, you know, not have all my basic needs met in for the price of like being able to be with family.
Sebastian Maniscalco
I get that.
Juliana
You see what I mean?
Sebastian Maniscalco
And that's what I'm doing with my father. You know, sometimes you, you sacrifice some of the luxuries in life. You have to know what you're going into, the expectations. I know what I'm walking into. For three days we're going to be sleeping on the floor and it's going to be fun and what have you. And then we're going to go downtown and stay downtown for three days. So I think if it's something that's discussed beforehand and this is the reason why we're doing it. Absolutely. But if you're just going to go and there's no real reason to be there, I don't think he should be sleeping in a bed with his feet hanging off that the.
Juliana
I see what he's saying. But he believes in the compromise. That's a good point though. Like if it's for Duke.
Bill
Right.
Juliana
You're doing it for your kids, for them to have the experience with the
Sebastian Maniscalco
cousins and my father and myself too because I have a baseball card collection in the basement and football cards and my son just got into collecting and he's so excited to go down to the basement. So for me it's gonna be a lot of nostalgia for me to look through cards that I once collect collected and now my son's gonna acquire them. So, you know, and. You know. Yeah, it's. It's gonna be a lot of memories. And we're. And. And my sister. It's the first time we're gonna be back together at the. At the house together, I think, since I left Chicago in 1998. So it's. It's gonna be. It's gonna be fun.
Juliana
What are you working on right now? Because, you know, I need to know all the things you're doing.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Oh, no, I am working on. I just. I have a new SiriusXM channel called Sebastian Hear the ads.
Bill
Duke and I. My son Duke and I listened to it on the way to school.
Juliana
Is it all comedians?
Sebastian Maniscalco
It's all comedian. It's comedian driven. However, I'm populating the channel with my own show. It's called the Sebastian Maniscalco Show. I'm going to be doing interviews. I just interviewed Paul Anka. This week is.
Bill
What are we? Chop liver Manisco.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Like, it's local. I. I know. You guys don't even live here.
Juliana
You're doing it here in la. Yeah, yeah. Okay. So you interview people?
Sebastian Maniscalco
I interview people. I'm starting to interview people, yes. And then, yeah, I. I got a new dance song that's. That's out with Steve Aoki called Does your father know you dance like that? And I'm at the Wind Memorial Day weekend. I'll do four shows there. I'll be there again in August and October. So, yeah, I'm just kind of bouncing around and having fun.
Bill
I saw you. I saw him at the Wynn. It was awesome. It's such a great theater there. It's just a great crowd. Yeah, yeah, it was really good.
Sebastian Maniscalco
I think it's one of the best showrooms in Las Vegas, I think. Wynn Hotel.
Bill
The best.
Sebastian Maniscalco
The best. You can't really beat it.
Bill
And we have an RPM battalion in Vegas, just.
Sebastian Maniscalco
You do Caesars, right?
Bill
In Caesars, Yeah.
Sebastian Maniscalco
By the way, I'm having my dad's party at your restaurant.
Bill
I know. In Chicago.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah.
Juliana
When?
Sebastian Maniscalco
June 26th, I believe.
Juliana
Is it a big party? How many people?
Sebastian Maniscalco
50 people. There's like a room.
Bill
Yeah, we have a private room. Yeah.
Juliana
Which one's he having at it?
Bill
Come and give a toast.
Juliana
Oh, my God. He didn't invite you? No one.
Bill
50 grand.
Juliana
No one invited you? His appearance, you know, so this for free?
Sebastian Maniscalco
Doing meet and greets at the party?
Bill
Just put it on the gratuity.
Sebastian Maniscalco
So you have that restaurant downstairs where we had the premiere Pizzeria Portofino.
Juliana
Yeah, yeah.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Now, on the river, someone said that you could, like, get a boat and pull up and. And pop off the boat and then pop back on.
Juliana
Yeah.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Okay. I pick your brain and, like, I might want to.
Juliana
You want to do that?
Sebastian Maniscalco
I might want to do that.
Juliana
Let's do that.
Bill
I gotta go. I gotta go. You met him backstage. John, the guy. The guy. I took him backstage. He's got a beautiful big boat.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Call John right now.
Juliana
Call John right now.
Bill
Calling him. Hold on.
Sebastian Maniscalco
I know this. What I don't want.
Juliana
It's beautiful.
Bill
No, no, trust.
Juliana
He's gonna give you the boat.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Give me the boat. I need somebody to drive this damn thing.
Bill
Captain and a crew.
Juliana
Got a captain.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Don't give me the.
Juliana
Call him on speaker.
Bill
Calling him. Calling him.
Juliana
You and your family are gonna cruise around.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah.
Juliana
You're gonna check out the beautiful architecture and then we'll see. What time should we be there? All right.
Sebastian Maniscalco
You can come to the party. I mean, it's at your facility.
Bill
It's like we're running a hospital.
Juliana
Oh, my God. I have an idea for your show.
Bill
Is that your institution?
Juliana
I have an idea for your channel.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Okay.
Juliana
What about you do a show. Maybe you're already doing this. We're like everyday amateurs. Like me. Come on. Now you're getting into the fanboy to do a bit. We do five minutes. You do an hour show, and it's called, like, Amateur Hour or something. That's cute, right? I like Amateur Hour.
Bill
He's not digging it.
Juliana
And I could be. I'd like to be on one of the first episodes, and I've got some material. And you can determine, like, is the uncle really funny? Are you really funny or not funny?
Sebastian Maniscalco
Oh, yeah. No, we're not doing that.
Juliana
Oh, okay. Cause I feel like I've been, you know, I think. I don't know. I think, you know.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Do you think you could get up five minutes and make people laugh that way?
Juliana
I don't know.
Bill
I think two minutes would be tough.
Juliana
I think any minute would be tough, but I think I'd like to try. And I think a lot of people. You know how people think, like, oh, my uncle's so funny, he could be a comedian. Or this person's so funny, could be. My best friend is so funny, she could be a comedian. But could you be.
Bill
There's an art to it, man.
Juliana
Well, obviously.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Well, do you have a go to story or something that you go to that's humorous or funny? You know how we all say bill or tell that story about the. Yes. And Then do you have a go to story? Do you have a funny story?
Juliana
I have a lot.
Bill
I got one.
Juliana
I have a lot.
Bill
The time I was on the Danny Bonaduce daytime talk show.
Sebastian Maniscalco
So that's your.
Bill
Oh, it's funny as hell. We can talk about that later. Remember Danny Bonaduce?
Juliana
Yeah.
Bill
He had a daytime talk show that was on the air and I was asked to be a guest on it. It was filmed out of Chicago back in the. I guess it was the early 90s.
Juliana
Okay.
Bill
But I don't know.
Juliana
And what happened? No, you got us.
Bill
So I had this company called Cigars around the World. I started it right out of college. It was a of the month club, getting cigars delivered to your home every month. And I pitched these producers and they said, come on in and we'll talk about having you on an episode to talk about great gifts for the holidays. I show up to film the show and they lied to me. It was, I'm dateless and lonely for the holidays.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Oh, my God.
Bill
And they tried to set me up with these girls.
Juliana
Okay, that's funny. But.
Bill
And I went through it. I'm like, all right, well, they're going to make good. They're going to put me on with the cigars. They aired the show Thanksgiving Day when everyone's home watching daytime television. It was the highest rated show in the Danny Bonaduce daytime talk show run. I'm getting calls from all of. I could tell where it was airing because my friends were like, you loser. You're dateless and lonely for the holidays. But I mean, I have a longer version of that story that I think could be funny.
Juliana
But we don't need.
Bill
I'm just, I'm just giving you the Cliff notes.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Here's the concerning part. Here's the concerning part. And, and, and I want to get to the bottom of it. How is this your go to story? And she's never heard it like, like,
Bill
she, she has, she has, she has. Adult ADD Can I tell you, actually, that's the next episode after yours.
Juliana
We are doing it.
Bill
We're talking about adult ADD Can I say something? I you not.
Juliana
Can I tell you something? Can I tell you something? I love you. We've been together 20 years and I don't. I'm not doing this to be embarrassed, but can I tell you that's a great story to tell, like a funny story, but that's not like a stand up story. Like, there's no like. But there's no like, funny ending.
Bill
I've told it about five. I give. I do a lot of speaking to, like, sales teams. And that's part of one of my stories. It goes over well. I mean, brings the house down.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah, well, so.
Juliana
But that's not like a.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Guys, did you. Were you feeling it over there?
Bill
I'm gonna. You know what? I'm gonna open for you. Pat McGann's out. We're getting rid of Pat McGann. He's done. I'm taking over from a game.
Juliana
Sebastian. I think I do. I can't think of one right now, but I have a lot of really good stories that have a beginning, middle, and an end. I do.
Sebastian Maniscalco
No, I'm sure you do. Everybody has their stories right, but what I find is people that tell stories, they don't have the ability to cut out some of the information in the story that pertain to making somebody laugh. So there's a lot of fat on these stories.
Bill
And the pauses and the pace, the pace, the pausing.
Sebastian Maniscalco
You started. Here's a little technique that I've learned. You never tell anybody that this story is fantastic. You never lead with that. You built it up. You're like, I got one. So everybody now is expecting to laugh, and the story is funny and humorous, but when the expectations are high, it never lands as high as the person's expectations. So we just tell a story like it's just a story. And then if you're laughing, you're like, oh, that was a fun, funny story. Don't like premeditate.
Bill
No, good point.
Juliana
But he's right. So much of his mannerisms. He's the master of mannerisms. I gotta work on some of my material.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Yeah, work on the material.
Juliana
When do jokes come to you? Is it all day? And do you write them down? And what's your technique of remembering material?
Sebastian Maniscalco
So my jokes are. The jokes aren't jokes, they're storytelling. So the last. I'm going to be working out a bit tomorrow night for the first time about me going to a hair restoration appointment two weeks ago. And I'm gonna tell that story from beginning to end. I've told it already a couple of times to people that I trust, but they didn't. Again, I tell my mother these stories, and if she's laughing, I'm like, that's one for the story.
Bill
Biggest fan.
Sebastian Maniscalco
So. And there's no writing. There's nothing written. It's all recorded. And I do my writing on stage. So it's not like I'm gonna go home tonight, sit in a dark room and go, that's funny. It's all just living life experiences.
Bill
I'd like to know, though, are you gonna do it? Cause I'd like to see if we
Sebastian Maniscalco
get a 2 haircut.
Juliana
So you're talking about this a lot.
Bill
I'm getting a little bit of a widow's peak.
Juliana
You don't need the hair.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Believe me, I need hair.
Juliana
Good.
Bill
Listen, let's see if we can negotiate a package deal.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Well, this guy wanted. Well, this guy was a character. I got one eight years ago from this guy.
Juliana
Oh.
Sebastian Maniscalco
And now I'm like, is the old hair falling out? The new hair is falling out. So I went back to this guy and he goes, are you still comedian? And he said it in a disappointing way. And I go, nah, I was a comedian. Do you have a podcast? Do you do. And I go, yeah, I got a serious XM channel.
Bill
You have channel,
Sebastian Maniscalco
so. So we're off to a good start. I got the room laugh, so that's what I'm gonna be doing.
Juliana
Okay.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Not gonna go into the whole thing, but he was looking for a discount. If I brought him in on the podcast, he would give me a discount on my hair.
Ad Host
Perfect.
Bill
And we're gonna do that.
Sebastian Maniscalco
What am I gonna do? What am I gonna talk to this guy an hour about hair restoration?
Bill
Trim it down.
Juliana
Well, I have an idea. So that's what we. I mean, we could have him on because we're going to interview experts and medical experts. So then we'll pass forward the discount to you.
Bill
Yeah, we'll say, hey, you come on the Bill and Juliana podcast, and then Sebastian and I are going to come in together, package deal the hair transplants the same day.
Juliana
What do you think?
Sebastian Maniscalco
I think it might work because he's really into podcasts.

In football, you've got guys from everywhere, different backgrounds, different beliefs, all of this. It you don't agree on everything, but you got each other's backs. That's how it works. And right now, off the field, hate's going up everywhere. Different communities, different ways. And Jewish communities are getting hit hard. That's not how a team operates. The blue Square is just one way of showing you've got people's backs. Go to bluesquarealliance.org grab one share it. Be a good teammate.

In their premiere episode, Bill and Giuliana welcome superstar comedian Sebastian Maniscalco to discuss a surprisingly divisive subject: When you travel to see family, do you stay at their home or opt for the comfort of a hotel? This breezy, hilarious, and occasionally heartfelt conversation explores family dynamics, Italian heritage, hosting etiquette, and the art of standup comedy, peppered with personal stories and signature comedic moments from all three.
The debate on staying with relatives vs. booking a hotel is deeply personal and surprisingly emotional—rooted in comfort, family tradition, generational perspective, and a bit of good-natured guilt. Sebastian Maniscalco offers wisdom: Compromise, know your limits, and make room for special moments that only family can provide—just maybe not all the time.
If you enjoy comedic takes on everyday dilemmas, honest marital banter, and insider perspectives on Italian-American families and the comedy business, this episode sets a fun, relatable, and entertaining tone for the new podcast series.
