Here. Welcome to the no Spin News for Monday, July 28, 2025. Stand up for your country. Well, some good news over the weekend for a change, Trump got some deals made in Europe and the economy looks like it's poised to do pretty well the rest of the year. Of course, you never know. Some of my friends are exuberant about the stock market. I urge caution. Okay, don't dive in until you're sure you know what you want to do. But anyway, we'll get to that coming up. But first, a Wall Street Journal poll about the Democratic Party, and that is the subject of this evening's Talking Points Memo. So the Wall street journal surveyed 1500 registered voters and they found out that the Democratic Party gets the lowest approval rating in 35 years. Wow. Okay. So you're going back into the 1990s, I guess after Bill Clinton or probably before. Probably before Bill Clinton, but I don't know what year it was. But anyway, it's not a good situation for the Democrats. So let's get specific. First question, do you have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of the Democratic Party? Favorable. 33 unfavorable 63. Wow. Now this includes independents and Republicans, of course, but that's a big number. Favorable, unfavorable opinion, Republican Party. Favorable 43 unfavorable 54 approve or disprove of the job Donald Trump is doing as president? Approve 46 disapprove 52. So it's a judgmental crowd here. Doesn't seem to be an ideological crowd in this Wall Street Journal poll. I think that's a fair assessment. Now let's get to the reasons. The primary reason Democratic Party is having so much trouble is its lack of problem solving. This is not a conservative liberal situation. Yes, the far left dominates the party and it has damaged the Democrats in a very profound way. No doubt about that. But it's a problem solving situation. So let's run it down. The biggest problem that we've had in this country after Covid, it's the open border and that policy was instituted by President Biden with no dissent from the Democratic Party. It is costing the American taxpayer $182 billion every year. Every year to deal with this problem. 728 billion under Biden in four years. So we're going to get into the trillions, all right? 12 million people. That's a low estimate of how many crossed into the United States under Biden's look the other way policy, which he has never explained, by the way. And that's another big reason that Americans are not bullish on the Democratic Party. Biden never even told us why he was doing. All we heard was, no, the border's secure. Of course it wasn't secure. And the amount of narcotics that poured in, he was record breaking. And we're seeing that every day in crime, in the streets and drug overdoses. Secondly, the economy. So under Joe Biden, inflation hit a incredible 9%. It's down about 3% now. Okay, 9% because Biden slapped regulations on the fossil fuel industry across the board that crippled supply lines. Okay? Made it much more expensive to get food and other items to the stores, and it drove prices up. You remember the ships backed up in the ports that the grocery stores just ramming everything up. Restaurants, all of that because they couldn't get the supplies in. And that was because the. All the regulations that the Biden administration put on trucking and gasoline and harvesting is crazy. Then diversity, equity, inclusion, dei. Americans don't want this. Every poll shows it. They don't want it. They do not want favoritism based on skin color. Okay? Period. And they don't want trans men competing with women. And the Democratic Party embraces that all across the board. Urban crime, cities like San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Louisiana, all in huge trouble. They cannot protect their citizens. Public safety has collapsed. All of them are under Democratic leadership. High taxes, top five tax states in the union. California, Hawaii, New York, New Jersey, Oregon. All Democrats. And working men and women are gouged. They have no money. And finally, welfare expansion. Under President Biden, 20 million Americans were added to the welfare rolls, costing $760 billion a year. And that doesn't count the undocumented who were receiving or are receiving welfare payments. Biden was the biggest spending president in history. So you add that all up, and that's why the party is not doing well among the American population. Now, what about a turnaround? Well, it's impossible now because there's no leader of the Democratic Party. There's no face. All right, I guess Barack Obama is still the most powerful Democrat, but he's not really actively involved. And there are some governors who are going to run in 28, but nobody knows who they are. Most famous Democrat outside of Barack Obama is probably Ocasio Cortez or Bernie Sanders. And these are communist people. I mean, you know, so, you know, I'm a Democrat. It's, it's going to be a tough road going forward. Midterms, you know, it's all about Trump in the midterms. Do Americans, are they fed up with him or not? But it looks like, as I said in the opening, that the economy, you know, with these trade deals and all that. So Democrats are not happy. And that is a memo. Bill O'Reilly here. I recently sat down with President Trump in Florida, and I can tell you he is laser focused on helping Americans prosper during his second term. That's why I have joined forces with Alexander Green, chief investment strategist at the Oxford Club, for a special presentation called the Rebirth of the American Dream. In this groundbreaking event, you will discover why Donald Trump's policies could trigger an economic boom, how the AI revolution could help create more millionaires than at any other time in history, details on six specific stocks that could soar during Trump's presidency, and most importantly, how you can achieve the American dream. Now, I followed Alex's work for more than 10, 20 years, and he spotted some of the best performing stocks of our time. So please don't miss this opportunity. Visit Trump's American Dream.com TrumpSAmericanDream.com Joining us now from Denver, Colorado, is Frankie Wilmer. He's a PhD professor of political science, the University of Colorado, Boulder, which has a lot of liberal people and Democrats. I worked in Denver for a couple of years. I am well versed at the UC Boulder. So, first of all, Doctor, thank you for helping us. And am I making any mistakes?
Ryan Reynolds
Not so far, for sure. I have to tell you something, though. This is the time we met. Did you mention I was a legislator? Right. In elected office for eight years. I actually bought political ads on your AM radio talk show.
Frankie Wilmer
Good. And I hope they helped out. Well, you are, you are a registered Democrat. Because I asked my staff, I said, get me a, give me a smart Democrat. Get me somebody who's not going to come in here and just throw propaganda my way. So from your perch in the Rocky Mountains now, do you see any hope for your party in the next few years? Hey, it's Ryan Reynolds here from Mint Mobile. Now, I was looking for fun ways to tell you that Mint's offer of unlimited Premium Wireless for $15 a month is back. So I thought it would be fun if we made $15 bills, but it.
Martha
Turns out that's very illegal.
Frankie Wilmer
So there goes my big idea for the commercial. Give it a try@mintmobile.com Switch upfront payment.
Bill O'Reilly
Of $45 for a three month plan equivalent to $15 per month required new customer offer for first three months only. Speed slow after 35 gigabytes of networks busy taxes and fees extra.
Martha
See mintmobile.com Martha listens to her favorite band all the time. In the car, gym, even sleeping. So when they finally went on tour, Martha bundled her flight and hotel on Expedia to see them live. She saved so much she got her seat close enough to actually see and hear them. Sort of. You were made to scream from the front row. We were made to quietly save you more Expedia made to travel savings vary and subject to availability. Flight inclusive packages are atoll protected.
Ryan Reynolds
Well, you know, you talked about the poles. The poles go up and down. There have been times in the past, you said this is the lowest point for Democrats in 35 years. Yeah, 35 years. And just in 2014, 2013 and 2017 polls showed Republicans at about the same place. So it's even more recently. So yeah, they go up and down. I don't think we've seen the effects of the tariffs whenever they're going to come and go, come and go on inflation. We definitely have not seen the impact of the Medicare, Medicare cuts, Medicaid cuts, especially to the rural hospitals and health caregivers. And those rural states are mostly red too, by the way. So I think that's going to have an impact. And you know, we talked about the cratering of support for or favorability for Democrats. Donald Trump's popularity has been cratering as well. I mean, he's at 37, we're at 33. But.
Frankie Wilmer
Well, he's 40. He's 46. In a Journal poll.
Ryan Reynolds
July 7th through July.
Frankie Wilmer
You know, but we. Okay, we know. We know where he is. We know. Right. Okay.
Ryan Reynolds
All right. Pretty reliable. The point is that the Republicans control all three branches. They control both houses and the presidency and they have more Republican appointed Supreme Court justices.
Frankie Wilmer
Well, the only hope you have is if people turn on Trump. But my analysis is even if that happens, they're not going to vote. Not going to vote for you. They're not going to vote for you guys because all of the things that I listed are in stone. They happen. So if, say there's an independent voters and they, and they make the calls now. And I go, I don't think Trump's doing a good job. For whatever reason. Some of the reasons that you mentioned, they're not going to go in and pull a lever for Democrats after Biden and Harris and all of these people disappointed everybody so badly, they just won't vote.
Ryan Reynolds
Biden's first election and Obama's two elections both polled very positively with independents. And as you know, this same Wall Street Journal poll shows that independents were the biggest chunk of losses for the Republicans, 29% or something down among independents. So, yeah, swing port voters are where it's at. I actually think part of the problem is that voters, first of all, as you know, politics is mostly emotional, not so rational. It's about how people identify and how they feel about things. And so that can be very different than reality. And that's about getting the message and the messengers to deliver the message in a clear.
Frankie Wilmer
But who's. Who's the. Who's the messenger? You don't have a leader. Democratic Party has no leader.
Ryan Reynolds
It's not just that. I could go through a list of people. You name some of them. I think they're very articulate, but nobody.
Frankie Wilmer
Knows who they are. There's not one Democrat out outside of the communist faction convention.
Ryan Reynolds
Nobody knew who Obama was either.
Frankie Wilmer
Okay, but we're talking closer to the.
Ryan Reynolds
Election cycle, to the campaign cycle. Messengers will emerge. Buddha, Judge, Gretchen, who to judge?
Frankie Wilmer
You can't eat. The Africa air traffic controller situation is desperate.
Ryan Reynolds
We've got plenty.
Frankie Wilmer
Well, Doc, I like Wes Moore, but nobody knows who the. Governor Moore, Nobody knows who he is. Gavin Newsom is poison for your party. You've got to know that.
Ryan Reynolds
It's. It's not time. But I want to make a little bit of a different point, kind of as a political scientist. The voters clearly in the. Mamdani, I know you're going to call him a communist. We'll talk about communism later, maybe, but his election in the mayoral primary, Democrat and Biden's. I mean, Trump's election as president has a really clear message for all of us, which is voters are tired of. And they don't want to support candidates who are canned, candidates who are scripted candidates, candidates who are handled.
Frankie Wilmer
I agree with that. But. But you're getting, You're. You're putting. Remember, Doctor, remember. Remember Sarah Palin when she got the nomination in Minneapolis, the famous line that she stole. You're putting lipstick on a pig. All right, so Mamdani is a communist. The guy wants to seize Socialist, just like everybody. That's what he says he is. But then when you read his screens, he wants to seize control of the private economy, which is. That's what he said. That's what he said.
Ryan Reynolds
But I've listened to him four times.
Frankie Wilmer
I live here. You live there. I live here. I know what he says.
Ryan Reynolds
Okay, my point. He's a Social Democrat, just like everybody in Scandinavia is a Democratic socialist. And they're not communists.
Frankie Wilmer
Way more than that. Way more than that. Now, listen, if you're going to bank on Mandani to be a positive for the Democratic Party, you're going to be sorely disappointed.
Ryan Reynolds
That was the message of his win. We don't.
Frankie Wilmer
His win was 22%. Only 22% of the. Of the Democratic registered voters cast a ballot in that in the primary. That was nothing. It's. It's New York. It's chaos. He's not going to win. He's not going to win a mayoral race. But what they're going to do, you.
Ryan Reynolds
Know, we can talk about mayoral race another time. The point is.
Frankie Wilmer
No, no, we're not going to talk about it. Now. The Republicans. Doctor, give me 30. I'll give you 30. Republicans are going to tie a millstone, the Democratic millstones, because the Democrats. Right around this guy's neck, okay? And that's what they're going to do because he's so far out there. But just the fact that you brought him up and we're talking about him now shows there isn't one mainstream Democrat, not one, okay, that can spur the message of the Democratic Party.
Ryan Reynolds
There isn't anybody I like. Chris Murphy, I like.
Frankie Wilmer
Who is he? Nobody knows him.
Ryan Reynolds
Gavin Newsom. I like Gavin Newsom. Presidents who lost their first run and then won the second term, and presidents two times, Cleveland and Trump won a first term, lost a second, came back for a third. So I don't write off Kamala Harris even.
Frankie Wilmer
I got. I got one specific question for you. When Gavin Newsom took over from Jerry Brown in California, the state had a surplus of more than $100 million. They are now 34 billion in dollars in debt or something. And you like them?
Ryan Reynolds
I said, I like him.
Frankie Wilmer
Why you like his hair? Come on, guys. As inefficient as any politician I've ever seen. And Buttigieg is second. You can't even get on a plane.
Ryan Reynolds
Bill, I want to go back to two things you said. One is that DEI is about showing favorability for people because of their skin color. That is not what it is.
Frankie Wilmer
Equity that is what equity is, and that's in dei.
Ryan Reynolds
People who want to misinform and mislead the public are saying that. But I worked in that business in civil rights legislation.
Frankie Wilmer
Looked up equity favoritism to certain groups.
Ryan Reynolds
Look it up for white men for 200 years.
Frankie Wilmer
So what? So what?
Ryan Reynolds
Favoritism?
Frankie Wilmer
You don't correct the historical wrong by instituting another wrong.
Ryan Reynolds
I've heard you say that before, too. But you know what? You didn't write the Constitution, and still you want the rights that it presents you.
Frankie Wilmer
So I want. I want everybody to have an equal opportunity to pursue happiness.
Ryan Reynolds
You can't just pick the parts of history that benefit you.
Frankie Wilmer
Look, come on, Doctor. You know DEI is deeply unpopular. You know, it's deeply unpopular about what it is.
Ryan Reynolds
It's unpopular the way it's presented, the way you just said, which is not what it is.
Frankie Wilmer
Yes, it is. Yes, it is. It's favoritism towards certain groups. Don't give me that. It is favoritism.
Ryan Reynolds
Recruit a workforce, a qualified workforce that looks like America. It's that simple.
Frankie Wilmer
That's favoring certain people based on skin color and ethnicity.
Ryan Reynolds
Aspiration, not a policy.
Frankie Wilmer
Aspiration is fine. Knocking people out because they're not the right color isn't. And that's what the Democrats support.
Ryan Reynolds
Supreme Court has ruled on this. That's not.
Frankie Wilmer
Why do you think DEI is not. Is so far down in the polls, you realize it's 60, 65.
Ryan Reynolds
People like you are giving misinformation to people.
Frankie Wilmer
My information. Look it up. Look up equity. Look up the definition.
Ryan Reynolds
I could read you Title seven, word for word. It prevents employment, fiscal, financial, credit, housing, discrimination against protected classes and of people.
Frankie Wilmer
That's fine.
Ryan Reynolds
That's fine.
Frankie Wilmer
We're talking about hiring and admissions to universities who don't do that on skin color. And they have been doing it.
Ryan Reynolds
You know, it said that you don't. The Supreme Court agrees with that.
Frankie Wilmer
And you don't think colleges, employers do that? You don't think Boulder does that? Come on.
Ryan Reynolds
I don't think they choose a less qualified person because their skin color. No.
Frankie Wilmer
All right, look, I want to go. Next time you visit the Land of Oz, I want to go with you.
Ryan Reynolds
Is this Land of Oz?
Frankie Wilmer
I appreciate the. I appreciate the lively debate, Doctor. Thank you very much. Thank you. All right. Bias in the media. One of the reasons the Democratic Party's dissent in the Wall Street Journal poll is so shocking is that the corporate media still backs them, but the corporate media's fallen off the cliff, just like the party so this is latest. Okay, so News Busters is a conservative outfit and they are pretty good with their studies. I've never seen them take stats and manipulate them as other people do. I haven't seen that from News Busters. So here are the stats, right? So Colbert is the poster boy now for, you know, guys getting hammered because they're far left, right? In 20. Since 2022, we're talking about two and a half years. Colbert has hosted 176 left leaning guests. Only one Republican. Guess who the Republican was? Liz Cheney, who hates Trump. Okay. That's the only reason she signed it this year alone. First half of the year, Colbert had 43 left lending political guests zero conservatives. Way to go, Stevie baby. Now all of them late night, 99% of political guests on late night comedy shows lean left, 99% in the first half of this year. Okay, January 6th, June 30th, 160. 106 liberal Democrats, one conservative who was a conservative guy named Oren Cass, founder of a right wing think tank. He appeared on the Daily Show. I'm Piers Morgan, the host of the Piers Morgan Uncensored podcast. We do big interviews and we do big debates about whatever's getting people talking. We make news, we make noise, and we make a little bit of trouble too. Come and see what all the fuss is about. Frankie Wilmer
Kimmel, Myers, Fallon, Colbert and the Daily Show. That's John Stewart. He only does it once a week. Okay, they won't book you now. It'll be interesting to see for confronting evil if Stuart books me. I don't know whether he will or not. He gets astronomical ratings when he does. Okay, we have a long history of very interesting segments. Let's see if he does or not. Now we're gonna ask them all to book me, Kimmel, Fallon, whole crew, and I'll report back to you when I go on the ratings go up on the bestselling nonfiction author in the world. Books are phenomenal. 19 number one bestsellers. Why wouldn't you book me? I'm pretty handsome, right? And they have a battery of makeup people and they all have 10 writers. So it's 10 against one. You should be able to beat me with 10 guys who are cold, Stewart. I said yeah, you should be able to beat me. It's me against your 12 guys back there writing anti O'Reilly jokes. We'll see. It'll be very interesting study. So the danger all this at late night and the morning follows too. Mornings like that not quite as bad. Gma, Today show, all that is it. It creates an aura propaganda. That's what the doctor was to she calling me a propagandist because she doesn't think DEI favors groups which of course it does, but what are you going to do? I thought she was a good guest. So it creates this bubble of propaganda where uninformed people who live in the left wing world, they believe this stuff. So if you never see a moderate voice, always see left wing people late night and in the morning on a network show, what do you think you're going to do if you don't know very much? And that's what's happening. And it happened yesterday Sunday. So my pal Stephen A. Smith was on this Week with Jonathan Karl and he texted me, he says watch and critique me, which I did. And Smith is always good, very lively and makes his points. But Carl is a nitwit. I'm sorry, John. I'm sorry you are. And I'm going to prove it now. So there were two sound bites that I'm going to show you. The first one is that they're talking about Tulsi Gabbard who overstated her case, by the way. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard way overstated her case. She out kicked her coverage. There is a thread of truth in what she has, but that she exaggerated it. Okay, here's what Carl said. Go. So let's start with the the what we saw in the White House this week. Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence coming out and making some extraordinary claims about Barack Obama and the President of the United States accusing Obama of treason. Again, no evidence whatsoever for any of this stuff. Yeah, there's plenty of evidence. Barack Obama as president presided over meetings that talked about Russian collusion with the head of the CIA, the head of the FBI, who are both in serious trouble, okay, for passing on false information. Obama was at those meetings now, that doesn't mean he did anything wrong. But surely you need to investigate what happened at those meetings, right? You can't go on the air on abc. Well, you can, but. And say there's no evidence. That's evidence. The President Barack Obama held meetings discussing Russian collusion with with guys who allegedly falsified information. That's evidence. All right, the second one is about Kamala Harris using her to her $2 billion campaign fund to pay celebrities to say good things about her. Go. Trump actually suggested last night that Kamala Harris should be prosecuted for allegedly buying the votes endorsements of celebrities like Beyonce. Again, no evidence to this stuff. Bull. There's plenty of evidence. If you're giving money to anybody to help you in your campaign, that's an in kind donation. Okay, so Oprah, as widely reported, got more than a million dollars to put on an event for Harris that came out of her money, campaign money. Bruce Springsteen got 75,000. Beyonce got 165,000. Beyonce didn't do jack. I don't think she even sang a song. That's evidence, Jonathan. Carl, what is wrong with you? Now, Trump exaggerated it as he sometimes does. Here's what he said. Quote, I'm looking at the large amount of money owed by the Democrats after the presidential election. And in fact they admit to paying probably illegally $11 million singer Beyonce for an endorsement. No, nobody admitted paying $11 million to Beyonce because it didn't happen. And B, we can't find it. And we, we would have found it. Now there was some obscure nut on the Internet, not even an organization that said something, but you can't do that. And that just gives the Jonathan Karls, who are not reporting honestly openings. Just keep it in the fact zone. But there's absolutely evidence that the Harris campaign spent money to get these celebrities surrounding her. Whether it's illegal or not is for the FEC to take a look at. That's how you fairly report this. Boy, the vicious organization Media Matters looks like it's going down a drain, according to the New York Times. Good. All anonymous sources, because that's what the Times does. Says that the Media Matters owes 15 million to fight all kinds of lawsuits against it and they're going to have to go out of business. And this is Rich Mark Elias, who remember Scott Pelley bringing in Elias. Elias, right in the middle of the Russian collusion stuff. Right in the middle of it. He's a lawyer. He's Hillary Clinton's top friend. Right in the middle of it. Okay, Pelly on 60 Minutes brings him in a hammer. Trump, I reported extensively on it. Okay. Doesn't even tell the audience that alliance is a buddy. Well, Elias is suing Media Matters because media matters stiffen him on his, on his fees. They're all going on. See, Cliff, here they come. Whoop, bang. Good. They're not honest. And Amelia is also investing under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission or allegations that colluded with advertisers to stop conservative points of view. Worse than that, they defame. They've defamed me all day long, so hope they go out of business along with Gawker. Hulk Hogan RIP drove Gawker out. This is a very important story. So Donald Trump Scotland meets with Surmer of England, the PM there. And in a Q and A, here's what Trump says. Go.
Bill O'Reilly
Earlier you said that you were going.
Frankie Wilmer
To change the deadline from 50 days. Yeah, I'm going to make a new deadline of about 10, 10 or 12 days from today. There's no reason in waiting. There's no reason in waiting. It's 50 days. I want to be generous, but we just don't see any progress being made. So the president said he's going to make an official announcement either tonight or tomorrow about what he's going to do with Putin.

You can find us at Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcast. And Europe's on board. They already know. And good. Again, you can't, you can't just let this guy run wild. I got a thing about Putin coming up in a final thought, because the audio for Confronting Evil, we just got our copies. And I'm going to play a little bit about Putin. EU trade deal. Pretty good deal, looks to me on paper, you never know. Of course, here's what it says. 15%, all the European nation countries will pay to get their stuff into the United States. A lot of money. The EU has agreed to buy 750 billion worth of American energy. 600 billion. It will invest in the infrastructure of the USA. And it's pretty good. So on News Nation, a democratic strategy named David Carlucci. Of course he's going to say this goes in and trashes the deal. Roll it. No, it's just an unprovoked trade war. We all know that. We've had problems now with Canada, with Mexico even, and now the European Union. We see these promises to buy military equipment or to invest in US Energy. Well, the proof is in the pudding. The proof is in the pudding. What kind of a moronic statement is that? He just signed a great deal for the usa. What is wrong with these people? Proof is in the pudding. My God. And what Ms. Meyer, with all due respect, should have said was Joe Biden didn't take one minute in four years to try to mitigate this unbelievable trade imbalance where the USA was getting hosed all over the world. Not one minute did he try to do anything about it. Right, Mr. Carl Luci, that's how you interview these people. Anyway, I'm going to be on with Leland Vitter, who's, you know, we should have a good discussion tonight. News Nation, 9 Eastern Time. Smart life. American adults spend half their day online. Addiction way out of control. Now, so this is a study conducted by Optimum, the telecommunications firm. 2,000 U.S. residents, 10 hours a day. 10 hours a day on this stupid thing. And then they have their computers and everything else, their laptops. My God. So all I can say is this. If you are addicted to that machine, to the Internet. Stop it. Just stop it. You can use. I have to use it because I have things coming in every second to me, news things and stuff like that. But you just cannot let it dominate your life. All right. Smart life. Now, I wrote a column on Sunday about Billy Joel and summer here on Long Island. I hope you read it. Got a nice note from Mr. Joel about it. He and I have a long history, as you may know. And then I went yesterday to see another group, a nostalgic group who are like my friend Shem von Schock. Shrek. Shem von Schreck. You say that 10 times. Who's really a talented musician. He's touring with Ambrosia and they sounded great, you know, And I like to go to these shows because it evokes so many good memories and the music holds up, say in history. July 28, 1942. One of the most heinous individuals who ever lived, Joseph Stalin issued order number 227. Here's what the order said. This is in the middle of World War II. Panic makers and cowers must be liquidated on the spot. This is Russians not one step backward without orders from higher headquarters. Commanders who were banned in a position without an order from higher headquarters are traitors to the mundaland. We write about Stalin extensively. In Confronting Evil, he murdered at least 15 million of his own countrymen. 15 million. Where do you see what he did to the tsar and his family? Oh, so that happened 83 years ago today. Vladimir Putin
It has been a fast rise for Vladimir Putin. Born to World War II veterans and raised in the slums of Leningrad, the young man earns a rough reputation as a local gang leader and judo champion. He quickly gains the attention of undercover KGB agents and is recruited into the agency. The 22 year old Putin is trained in hand to hand combat, counterintelligence and torture. His first assignment is the surveillance of foreigners in Leningrad. For five years, Vladimir hunts Russia's perceived enemies. Dozens of alleged spies are taken into custody by the kgb. Many are innocent. Some vanish. The communist leaders in Moscow are pleased. In 1985, Putin is promoted to lieutenant colonel and assigned to lead the KGB's operations in East Germany, a major job. There, his training in torture is put to use. First target, Freya Kleer, the pro Western theater director, is allegedly spreading democratic propaganda through underground newsletters. Under Putin's order, the 36 year old woman is placed under constant surveillance. She is soon arrested in Dresden and subjected to Zerzetsung corrosion. For weeks she endures isolation, surveillance, threats and efforts to destroy her reputation and personal relationships. Freya ultimately relents. Facing certain death, the activist accepts expulsion from Dresden and and is forcibly relocated to West Germany, destitute and alone.
