Tony Katz
This is Tony Katz filling in for the great Bill O'Reilly. It's Friday, May 30, 2025. You are listening to the O'Reilly Update. Here is what's happening today in America. A federal court blocks the president's tariff plan. Hawaii imposes a climate change tourism tax. Half of Americans consider themselves workaholics. A new survey ranks the wealthiest neighborhoods in the usa. Also ahead, my message of the day. But first, a three judge panel in New York City blocking President Trump from imposing high tariffs on Imports. The U.S. court of International Trade rejected the White House's authority to unilaterally impose the tax without their approval. Wrote the panel, quote, the president's worldwide tariff orders exceed any authority granted to him by the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers act, unquote. Hawaii is now the first state in the nation to impose a so called green tourism tax on everyone visiting the islands. The policy raises the tax on accommodations to 11%. It applies to all travelers staying in hotel rooms, short term vacation rentals, some long term rentals, even cruise ships. Officials claim the new fee will generate an additional $100 million. While critics say it will hurt Hawaii's tourism industry, a new study from the University of Georgia finds 55% of adults consider themselves workaholics. Most employees spend 20 hours a week focused on the job. Outside normal business hours, 75% check work emails over the weekend. A third refuse to put away their smartphones when eating dinner. Nine in ten Americans sleep with the devices less than two feet from their heads. Doctors say our smartphone addiction causes weight gain, insomnia, even depression. A survey from Money magazine ranking the richest neighborhoods in the nation. Places are judged by income, sex, savings and property value. Top five, Beverly Hills, then the Hamptons on Long island, followed by Palm Beach, Florida and Old Greenwich, Connecticut. And number one, Tribeca in New York City. A typical one bedroom condo in lower Manhattan sells for $5 million. The average income in Tribeca, $900,000 per year. The message of the day just moments away. Yes, there's danger all around, but it can't stop us from living our lives.

Tony Katz filling in for Bill O'Reilly. Time now for the O'Reilly Update. Message of the day. We're not safe. Now, that's a pretty loaded thing to say because if we were to take a look at history, we live in one of the safer times in history. We don't have world wars going on. We don't have factions going after other factions, certainly not in the United States. But we are not fools. And we understand that the world is a dangerous place. And we understand that the world has become through weakness and just attacks from within and without more dangerous for Americans, whether they be at home or traveling abroad. So it was not a surprise to me when I saw that Venezuela was even more dangerous than we ever assumed. And the United States was warning that American travelers there are now at massive risk level 4 on this 1 to 4 scale, a travel advisory saying don't go to Venezuela. The US State Department, as reported by Fox News says that you could engage wrongful detention, torture in detention, terrorism, kidnapping, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, crime, civil unrest and poor health infrastructure. Well, we already knew about the poor health infrastructure and the civil unrest and the crime. After all, it's a de facto communist nation run by Nicholas Maduro, a despot if anybody ever saw one before that, Hugo Chavez, again, another despot. But wrongful detention and torture and detention, American citizens being tortured and somehow this is become acceptable. You understand that there is no consulate there. We don't have an embassy there that was long since pulled out of. So, yes, Venezuela not only a danger for the people who live there, the Venezuelans who aren't gang members, but for Americans. And the U.S. state Department was warning that everyone should leave as quickly as possible. Venezuela might not be a surprise, even though the details are indeed shocking. What was maybe more shocking was a travel warning for Italy over fears over of terrorism. Back on May 23, the US State Department issued a level 2 travel warning for Italy, urging travelers to exercise increased caution due to terrorism. There is a risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Italy. We don't think of Italy this way. We think of Rome and art and having some pizza and some pasta and there's the Vatican, a trip with we all would like to take one day. But it is a reminder that our enemies do exist and we do ourselves no good when we put our head in the sand when talking about our enemies. Yes, this is something that in a left right conversation bothers the left most of all, accepting the idea that we have enemies. And very often that enemy exists regardless of what we do. You can kowtow, you can bend over, twist yourself into a pretzel, do all sorts of things. Our enemy will still hate us because of something deep ingrained in them. I believe there has to be something deep ingrained in us, the importance of being people who say we won't accept that way of life. We will live free and we will pay the price. We are not afraid to sacrifice to have the better tomorrow for ourselves and and for our children. Travel to Italy should be something we do freely. So, by the way, should be travel to Venezuela, which would be better for the Italians and the Venezuelans. We have enemies and it's up to us to be able to deal with those enemies as we need to. Never hide, never shy away and never pretend that they don't exist. The O'Reilly update will return with something you might not know.

Tony Katz
This is Tony Katz filling in for Bill O'Reilly. Now it's time for something you might not know. The scientists aren't even trying anymore. There was an article from a group called TechExplorer.com and this was the headline. New study, teen Drivers Safer with more Practice. Really? You? You needed a study to tell you that with more practice, a teen driver or basically anybody on planet Earth would be better at the thing that they're doing. This required a study that, I don't know, cost money and took people and time to put together. Ask any parent out there how Many times they've asked their kid to practice their piano or do their math homework and say, see, when you study, you do better. When you study, you learn how to play the piece. I'm pretty sure that number is all. All parents have been through this. You could have just asked your relatives at Thanksgiving and not have to have gone through the whole hassle of this study. But clearly the scientists have run out of important things to figure out. Instead, they bring us this. Teens that practice driving, says the article, especially in a variety of environments throughout their learner's permit stage, help reduce their crash risk and improve safety outcomes once they are out driving on their own. This is from a research scientist at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. Look, they've got a job to do. And when you're in the Transportation Institute, I assume that job has a very narrow list of parameters. And I get it. But this, this isn't a study. This is culture. Everybody knows that practice makes perfect. As a matter of fact, there's an adage about this that people use. A cliche, you might call it. And that cliche, that adage, practice makes perfect. As a matter of fact, there's a joke about it. You know how you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice. Something tells me that the scientists are just bored. Maybe life after Covid has people wondering, what are we going to do now? 82 teen drivers were monitored for 22 months to figure this out. You and I could have done this study in the first hour of a family reunion. Okay, the first half hour. We'll be right back.
