Sue Bird
Hey everybody, welcome back to Bird's Eye View. It's been a minute. I'm so excited to be here. We have an amazing, amazing guest. She is one of the most versatile two way players in the wnba. She is a WNBA champion, a Finals mvp, an Olympic gold medalist and and an unrivaled champion. She's in unrivaled right now, so we're going to talk all about that. This past season in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury, though she averaged around 15.6 points per game while continuing to make highlight after highlight. You probably already know who I'm talking about. It's North Philly's finest, Kalih Copper. But before we get to the interview, you know what time it is. Did you miss it? It's time for Sue's View. Support for the show comes from TNT Sports Philadelphia. Unrivaled is coming to your city. That is right. The woman led sports league is taking the show on the road to the Xfinity Mobile Arena. They'll be in the City of Brotherly love starting January 30th. Catch all of the action on TNT, TruTV and HBO Max at 7pm Eastern. Go to Monday.com and try it for free. This week for Sue's View, we're going to be doing a lot of unrivaled coverage. We've got Play of the Week presented by TNT Sports. I mean this is a little bit of a no brainer, right guys? Rekia Jackson drops off a dime to Dominique Malunga for the very first unrivaled dunk. I'm sure you guys saw it. It was legit. I think one of my favorite. I have two favorite parts from this dunk outside of the dunk itself. One was Dom's interview after the game where she talks about not wanting to be just a player who dunks in practice. Wanted to be somebody who gets it done in a game. So she got it done. Obviously a very exciting play. I feel like more to come. She's probably gonna be dunking all over the place, not just in unrivaled but beyond. But I think my second favorite part was I caught something on social media where sadly for Marina Mabry, she was like the closest player to Dom. And some people were talking about poster. She got posterized. This was a poster. And Marina clapped back. She's like, it was a good dunk. But do you guys know the definition of poster? I would have to agree. While it wasn't a poster, it was still absolutely legit. Just one hand threw it down and the rest is history. And she made history. So that's it for our play of the week presented by TNT Sports. So a little bit more for Sue's view on unrivaled this week is just talking about the standings. In my preview I talked about the laces being the team that I really liked. I liked them last year. They got hit by injuries so you never really got to see. You never really got to see what they could be. But this year you can start to taste it, right? You've got at who's playing well, you've got Jackie Young. But Brittany Sykes is actually the player that's leading the laces with 24.3 points per game. She's ranked fourth in the league. They're at the top of the standings. They just have so much versatility. I already have mentioned this whole idea of a Swiss army knife and they have it real quick. Some stats to throw at you. Their team averages 73.8 points per game. That's at the top of the league. They're also averaging 13 assists. And Jackie Young, who I already mentioned has a Single game high 35 points in a victory over the Rose. Now the Rose is a team we're going to be focused a lot on in this episode for obvious reasons. They started out hot. They started out hot. They are defending champs. Chelsea Gray is having an incredible MVP type season. But now we get to bring on our guest and dive a little bit more into the rose, their season and how things are going for Kaliyah Khopper. So here she is. Kah, welcome to the show. Thank you so much for coming on. I know you're joining us straight outta Miami, straight out, unrivaled in like my pre. I call it Sue's view. I give like my little just like what I'm seeing, what I'm thinking. I was talking about, you know, the rose but I had to talk about the laces too. The laces are sitting. The laces are sitting up top. Real quick. What do you think makes them? They're right now six and one. What do you Think makes them so good.
Kalih Copper
I think a very unselfish group period to start. Bunch of winners, people who have won, people who experience winning and knows what it takes to be at the top and stay at the top. But I think also they're super balanced. Like, they have. Their coach have figured out the rotations as, like, super smooth. Like, it's very consistent, and they know what to expect, and they do. They do their job. I think nobody goes too far outside of themselves. And I think Nas Hillman has really been big for them, just at an X factor standpoint.
Sue Bird
Yeah, she had such a good WNBA season, I'm actually not surprised. Plus, like, kind of like just the way she plays her skill set. Like, she can do it from outside.
Kalih Copper
She just played hard. She gonna do all the stuff that people don't want to do. She set great screens. I think people overlook that just being a good screener. Like she is days where that's what she is for them. She's a great screener. She's screening, she rebound. And it's like, it's the little things that's really keeping them at the top and giving them that separation.
Sue Bird
You brought something up that I actually never really gave a lot of thought to. Like, how does the ability for a coach to be able to find rotations and a subbing pattern, like, how is that different from playing five on five?
Kalih Copper
I think just because with the threes, you're always on. So we're in constant, constant actions and then just trying to figure out the right combinations. I mean, there's times even, like, for us where it's Lexi, Chelsea, and Z or Chelsea, me and Shakira might be better. You know, I think it's really the actions and then it's the flow of the game, too. So I think just if you can really, as a coach, and I think that's kind of hard with threes because you got to just. Just kind of figure it out on the fly. So if you can figure out those rotations. You got it.
Sue Bird
Yeah. Yeah. All right. So you've already brought up some of your teammates. You guys are the Rose Rose BC right now you're in third, four and three. You're just getting back into it. So what has. What has it been like for you? You know, like, having to miss the first couple games and then finding your way back into this rhythm.
Kalih Copper
I think it's been fun. I think we have a really light group. Like, I like that we can. Like, we always remember that this is our off season and we're having A lot of fun. Like, we have a lot of fun, but we have the professionalism to just lock in. Like, and we're super competitive. So it's like it doesn't matter if it's a shooting drill, doesn't matter if it's a warmup. Like, we are like at each other. So I like our ability to gauge that seriousness and then just having that lightness and it not getting so tight. Even throughout the three game losing streak, like, we still were ourselves but we had some conversations like, we gotta get come on y'. All. But it was still like, it was very light. So I really, I like our group.
Sue Bird
Yeah. I mean, I've seen you in some tiktoks. I feel like I've seen Everybody in some TikToks. So you guys are definitely. And that's what I think is so special about Unrivaled. It's like so rare for all of you to be in one place at the same time. So real quick, like when you just think about this experience as a whole, you basically just touched on the balance of like, you're playing, you're competing, but you're having fun. But it is so unique and it is what makes Unrivaled, I think, so fun for fans. Is that something that you guys did this just happen? Like the way that it's like every time you turn on the tv, it feels like a show. Every time you pick up social media, it feels like a show. Did that just like organically happen or is it something you guys were setting out to do?
Kalih Copper
I think it's very organic and that's how you want it to be because you can really get our genuine, like this is us at our core. Like, even just some. I think they've done a really good job of just putting things in place. Even something as simple as like a question of the day and they just leave it there. So it's just a way that we're going to practice. So you just catch us down the hallway just doing something just outrageous. Just because that's just what we do in general. And then you just run into like a, a question, like a question of the day, which is probably something super simple. And you make it like, it's like then as a viewer you're like, that's something Kyle would say. Like, you know, like that's just something she would say.
Sue Bird
Right.
Kalih Copper
So I think they, they've done a really good job of just putting like certain things in place and not having it super structured and then it just kind of just blooming like, very organically. And that's the cool part, too. But I think a lot of us, we are, like, we're competing with each other all summer, and then to experience different people as teammates or just to see different people in a different light, like, it's a lot of people that you don't like. You don't know. You just compete against them and you don't know them. And then you get to know them, and it's like, they kind of cool. They not so bad, Right? Damn. I thought I ain't like you for the most part. Like, you are totally.
Sue Bird
It's so funny how that happened.
Kalih Copper
Yeah. I think Unrival is, like, it does a great job of, like, connecting, but also, like, bringing out everything, like, small details about people.
Sue Bird
Do you think it's going to be harder when you have to play against them in the WNBA now you're like, damn, I like you.
Kalih Copper
Yeah, I like you. But, yeah, it's still. Yeah. When you see me. Yeah, I hug you after all that. Yeah. Yeah.
Sue Bird
That's funny. How often do you actually see other teams, like, other players? Can you explain it? Cause I've actually never been. I plan on coming down, but I've actually never been. I'm sure other people are curious. How often do you cross paths?
Kalih Copper
We see each other probably every day, depending on schedule. And you know what? I'm glad people moved out of the apartment because it got to a point where it's like. You know how you see something? Like, I see you in the. I see you when I'm walking my dog in the morning. Okay. Then I see you in the elevator, and it's like, okay, I'm not gonna speak again. Cause I just saw you, and then I see you in the training room while I'm on the table, and it's like, all right. But so, like, a lot of people don't live in the same place anymore. So, I mean, just seeing people in the training room, seeing people in passing, and depending on your schedule, like, if you're the, like, late practice block, you might not see the team that practiced at nine. But, like, anything in between that or, like, game days, like, you kind of always, like, cross paths, but it's not terrible.
Sue Bird
Yeah. I mean, it's reminding me of the bubble.
Kalih Copper
I was literally about to say. Yeah, bubble.
Sue Bird
Like, same, same, same, same. Okay. So when this season started, like I said, you guys had won the previous year, so they had, like, a banner night. What was that like?
Kalih Copper
It was cool. I think, like, we kind of got away from It. Cause we had been gone for so long, but just coming back and just feeling the love of winning, and then, like, that was an inaugural season. Like, that's some real fucking history right there. Like, when the banner came, I'm like, this is dope. Like, to be a part of something, like, you know, in years, years to come. I think I was thinking about, like, people in the WNBA when it first started, how they look at it now. Like, what. Like what Houston did, or, like, so for me, it's like, damn. Like, we really gonna look back on this. Like, it was super historic and having the league in general, but, like, we won that shit the first year. Like, that shit is stamped forever. So, I mean, it was super cool, I think, just the fans coming out and then just, like, feeling the. Like, just playing everybody and feeling the. Like, yeah, y' all was the champs. Like, they really. They really at us. Like, it's that, too.
Sue Bird
Like, that's my next question.
Kalih Copper
Yeah, they are. What's that turn on? What's that target like, target on your back? Yeah, you feel it. You feel it. And we troll too hard. Like, we troll so hard. Like, we don't help ourselves. But it's cool, like, when you. When you a winner and, like, you. You already know. You know what? That. That comes with the territory. So it's fun, though. I love. I love how competitive the games get. And then, like, it's. It's. It's a good balance of, like, you know, competitive. And everybody after is like, this is on the court. Like, it's cool. Like, you know, like, you know me for real. Like, I'm. I'm a super competitive. But, like, after all that, it's cool. We good. Like, but I love. I love this environment and how competitive it gets because it's just. It's three. It's three on three.
Sue Bird
Yeah. You can't hide out there.
Kalih Copper
You can.
Sue Bird
You can't hide out there.
Kalih Copper
You cannot hide out there.
Sue Bird
Yeah, you can't hide. I always say, like, the best after you win a championship, it's the best off season because nobody can say shit to you. No, it doesn't matter. They'll be like, oh, well, in game two, this happened. I don't care. We won. Say all you want.
Kalih Copper
Yeah.
Sue Bird
Matter, right? So it's always the best. So I get the. You got to troll a little bit. It's kind of a part of it now, I feel like, especially like today's generation, they love a troll.
Kalih Copper
Yeah. A good troll. Like, I think our admin. Our admin might Be the best. Like, yeah, our admin is the best. I'm gonna send you some of our memes and stuff. This is super funny.
Sue Bird
Okay, so before we get to this current season, so last year, you were dealing with a leg injury at the end of the unrivaled season, so you didn't get to play last couple games and then the finals. Is there anything that you learned from that experience, having to sit and watch that you were able to take with you?
Kalih Copper
Yeah, I think my impact is far beyond the court. And I think as I've gotten older, I've just realized that, like, so much of what I was like, you know, just bringing the energy every day and telling them what I'm seeing and just, you know, keeping my teammates engaged and keeping them confident. I think those are. Those things are so important. Like, imagine you out there on the court, and I came back when I didn't have to be here, and, like, somebody, like, I think. I don't know, somebody was having, like, a bad day, finishing around the room or whatever, and I'm just, like, just giving them life. Like, yo, you got it. Like, we work on this every day. Like, you get. And it's. Sometimes it's just, like, the little things that somebody just say to you, and it just kind of gets you out of it quick. And just being that leader, being a voice, just being there supporting a team, and I think that was big. That was big time for me as a. As a leader. And just then, just also for my teammates, just me and that extra, like, oomph.
Sue Bird
Yeah. Do you think it's helped you this year that you have had. You guys have 1, 2, 3, 4 returners, so it's you, Chelsea, Azari, Lexi are returning. Do you think, like, that has given you some continuity?
Kalih Copper
That is big time. Like, that is big time. And for us to, like, we don't. None of us are on the same team, so for us to, like, have had that break and then for us to be able to come back together, like, yes, like, it's great. I know how hard it is for, like, the first time you get out there and you, like, last year, how it was for us, trying to figure it out, and then it's about clicking at the right time. But for us this year, it's like, Chelsea, you know, you look at me, you know I'm going back door. Like, you know where I'm going. Like, so, yeah, I think that was, like. That was super smart of Nola, you know, making it a point of emphasis on getting us back Together and then just building off of that.
Sue Bird
I mean, you brought her up. So let's talk about her. Chelsea Gray. I mean, Lakeisha.
Kalih Copper
Lakeisha?
Sue Bird
That's what you call her?
Kalih Copper
Yeah.
Sue Bird
Well, tell me, where does that come from?
Kalih Copper
Yo, I just. Yo, see this one I'm talking about with unrivaled. Like, they just. I did, like, a little, like, story around it. Like, I just did a little sit down. It's super funny. It's like something super simple, but, like, now people really calling her Lakeisha because of me. Yeah.
Sue Bird
So she ate it.
Kalih Copper
Love it. She hated it in the beginning. It's growing on her now. I just be like, lakeisha. She be like. But one day she was like. She was, like, snapping at the end of the year. And I didn't. I didn't know. Never knew. I never knew her middle name. And I don't think she told me or something. So I was like, I'm just gonna make one up. And I kind of do that too. Like, anyway, I be making up names for people. And I was like, lakeisha. And I was like, that shit funny. And I just started calling her that. I started tweeting it, like. And then everybody started saying I'm like, whatever. Like, so I just be like, her.
Sue Bird
Is it like her alter ego?
Kalih Copper
It really is. That's exactly when she got it. She get in that. When she get in that mode, I mean.
Sue Bird
Well, she's in that mode. I mean, she. She's like the first player to hit 500 points. But it goes beyond that. Is she really watching her? It feels. She feels unstoppable. So what is it like for you? Like, how would you break down her game and what she's able to accomplish right now?
Kalih Copper
I think she's. She's unguardable here. You know why? Because she can score and she can pass the shit out of the ball. Like, so it's like, what do we do? We don't want to put two on the ball because we know she gonna make the right decision. And then it's like, we put our best. We put our best defender on her. Like, do we do that or do we put him on Kyle? Like, what do we do? Like, what? So. And then she's just so smart, and she's always even keel. Like, she's never, like, too high, never too low. But I think just from just like, a leadership standpoint, like, she different. Like, just always, like, we were down. Who were we playing? Maybe, like, the Hive. That. And we were terrible, but we were down something crazy. And she Was like, I don't know about y', all, but, like, she came to hell. Like, this calm. Like, I don't know about y', all, but, like, I think we could do it. Like, and I'm like, I'm with you. Like, yeah, we could do it. And we really. We was right. Like, we was right. We. One missed shot away. Came down. We was down like, 17, something crazy. So I think just her voice, her. I mean, her. Her skill set, her iq, like, off the charts, but just Chelsea as a. As a person, as a leader. And she's just humble. Like, just walking around here like, she ain't lakeisha. I'm like, man, stop. Like, she. Yeah, but she. And this, like, just super cool. And I think this is one of the things that I enjoy too. Like, I just had to deal with her ass in the finals, pissing me off. And then I get here and I'm right back with her, and I'm like, I'm like, it's too soon. It's too soon. But, like, she's just so humble, like, super chill. Like, just an overall great person.
Sue Bird
Yeah. I think that one of the best compliments you can give somebody is you absolutely hate playing against them and absolutely love playing with them. Like, that really said something about them. I'm gonna move over to Shakira. So Shakira Austin's a player that got added to your team, wasn't on your team last year. So what has she been able to bring to this roster?
Kalih Copper
Kira just got that edge, you know, that edge that is just in you. Like, you can't teach it. Kira just got it. And I think for me, as the type of player that I am, people that I like to play with, that's just what I like. Like, I need you to have an edge. Find the edge, however you gotta find it. Super competitor and just. She just wanna learn. Like, she's like, she's figuring. Like, she's trying to figure it out. She wants to be great, you know, she wants to do all the things that'll make her great. So I love, like, for me, it's always the work ethic. Like, you say you want to be what you want to be. Like, let me, like, show me. And then it's just like, she got that edge that you just. You can't teach well.
Sue Bird
So in your guys, four wins, Chelsea has two of the game winners and Shakira has the other two. So I feel like, you know, like, here's this player that wasn't on your roster last year. Brings a Versatility. She's able to hit clutch shots, so that's always important. Tell me what. How do you like the Elam ending? How there's just always a game winner? Like, what's that, like, as. Like, what's it like to play in a game that you know it's gonna end on a game winner?
Kalih Copper
Yeah, it's cool. I think I. I love that. I love the idea. I love it. Like, it. Especially when it's close. Like, yeah, I like. I like when it's close or, like, when the third quarter ends and it's so far away and people kind of think they know who's gonna win, and then it's not. It's no time. So it's like, we out here, we hooping. So if we getting stops, like, we on y', all, so. I love it. I love it. I think we've. We've done a really good job just trying to keep putting the emphasis on, like, you know, like, we need momentum going into the third. Like, we gotta. We know, like, if it's. If we down, like, let's keep it close. Let's. Let's. Like, so you gotta kind of strategize around that, too. But, yeah, I like it. It's cool. And then when it's, like, down to the wire, like, both teams, like, you, like, one possession for both ways, it's like, sometimes people kind of like watching the game. Sometimes people kind of fold. Like, when they're down, maybe they might be down two possessions and the other team got it. It's like, no, like, trust your defense. Like, trust that you can get a stop and, like, you can run it back. Like, and sometimes people kind of relax. But, like, when you see people. That's not. And they, like, it's like, super competitive. It's like, yes. Like, the last game, I think it was Hive and Luna. Like, that game was the end. The fourth was great. Like, it was great. Like, they were going at it.
Sue Bird
I've never played in the Elam ending, but it reminds me of, like, when you're a kid playing pickup and you're playing to whatever you're playing to 11. You gotta win by two. And it gets down to that when you got the, like. But it's like, it actually is a different strategy. Is there anything about your strategy in, like, this type of. In an unrivaled type, you know, game versus just, like, a game where, Like, a WNBA game where there's a clock and it's running down? Like, have you noticed anything shift for you the way you play it at the end, I think, just. Does it just stay aggressive?
Kalih Copper
Yeah, I think it's definitely stay aggressive. I think just, like, as far as, like, substitutions, I think you gotta. You really have to manage the third because you don't want, like, someone playing the whole third, and then you don't know how long the fourth gonna go. So you gotta kind of strategize your substitutions right before then. And then in the fourth, it's like, you might not. You might sub, but you, like, you might not. So you really just gotta get ready for that fourth. You gotta, like, the whole game chip away and, like, get ready for the fourth.
Sue Bird
Oh, no conditioning. You can see it just by watching. Conditioning is, like, a thing. It looks tough out there. I'm not even gonna lie.
Kalih Copper
Especially when you just fall in the hooping, like, when it. When it just start going like this, like. Or somebody start. They going at each other, you know, it's like, okay, she scored on me. I'm coming down. I might just come up. Oh, long rebound. We going back down. Oh, we come back, like, until someone like, be like, okay, let's run something. Let's get into something. Like, we just out here, like, at the park that can't get out of hand. We had a little. We had a little. We had some possessions the. Our last game. I'm like, hold on. Like, I'm like, we might need a timeout. Like, it was like, yeah, it was like we was out there hooping. I'm like, oh, goodness. This was like, straight pickup.
Sue Bird
Like, I always feel bad for any. Like, any player goes to the rim, tries to finish. Maybe they got fouled, maybe they didn't. The ref doesn't call it. They fall down. And then I'm like, oh, get up.
Kalih Copper
It's over.
Sue Bird
You gotta get all the way back. You have no chance.
Kalih Copper
By the time you getting up, they coming. Your team coming back down. Like, damn. Like, yep, throw it ahead. I'm right here.
Sue Bird

So you know last year there was like a bunch of stats around like players who played in unrivaled and then what they did in the summertime. So I'm curious, like how do you think you know playing unrivaled but playing three on three specifically has like helped your game?
Kalih Copper
I think just the fact that well one defensively like you gotta guard like you have to guard and knowing that like initial actions like you gotta be able to gotta be there and then offensively I think it helped me with just my decision making quicker because it's, it's nothing else to worry about. I'm worried about just the action that I'm in and then the pace scoring at a high clip with the pace. So I think for me it was that and then Just getting my threes up, like get them up for me. Just for my game. I'm like, I wanted to shoot more and I was working on it, so it was just like, just get him up. I'm coming in transition off the dribble. Just what I'm trying to work on. And then the court is so small. Like soon as you step over, soon as I step over half court, if you, you backing up, that's it. That's Hessie pull. That's good. So that's that. Just give me just a chance to just work on the stuff. But you just, you constantly, you in every play. So it's never like, like fives, you know, maybe one possession I'm in the corner chilling. Like I get to. I'm looking like, all right. Catching my burden. No, never that. Like you on. So I actually, I had a love hate relationship with like always. But like it really does help your game.
Sue Bird
Yeah, yeah. No, I like what you said about defense because so I think on offense it's fair to say, like, because there's so much space, it's, it's, there's like a lot of freedom and you're probably going to be able to like find something at some point, but then, but on the other side, on the defensive side, it's 10 times harder than five on five. I always say, I'm like, you do three on three defensive drills trying to get better because it's so hard for a five on five team. Like that's. You break it down, you do it. So do you think, like the games that I watch, you can tell some teams and I know it's based on personnel. Do you think it's better to be able to switch everything three on three, or do you think it's better to fight through things?
Kalih Copper
I literally just had this conversation with Nola because for us we were having trouble with our. It was strictly our defense and it was our ball screen defense. And we just, we went to switching. And for me I think it's good if you can switch. But for me, I thought for our group it was important to keep us aggressive and keep us on, like, you know, switching. I feel like when you switch, you're like, okay, I'm switching, so I'm gonna get under. Like you can breathe a little bit. Yeah. But when you know you gotta fight over the screen to get back in front before the post players step up and then there's a layup like you on, like you already ready. You're being aggressive on catches like you already ready. To. To be aggressive, to get over the screen. So I think, like, early, especially to start games, I think it's just important to fight over, like, you just being aggressive. Like, you know, like, okay, I'm not. I'm not switching, so I got to get over. I got to be aggressive. I got to be up closer. I got to make the catches tougher. Like, so I think to. To start for, like, for us, I think it's good for us to. To fight over for everybody to be kind of engaged. Like, it's not like, it's something easy. Like, switching and switching is not easy, but it's still, like, a little more. Like, okay, I could breathe a little bit. I'm switching. I'm just going under like that.
Sue Bird
Yeah. So who do you think is the toughest to guard in unrivaled for you guys?
Kalih Copper
Kelsey Mitchell is insane. Like, insane. You know what's crazy? My first game back, it's like, yeah, welcome back your garden, Kelsey Mitchell. I'm like, oh, great. I got it. Like, sign me up. I think she's just. She's just. She's different. Like, she could score at every level super fast. She gonna hesit you to death, get you to stand, like, ridiculous. And then I just think. I think Stewie like, her being able to just be so versatile. Like, it's. I think she's just. She's great. Yeah. I think they've probably been, like, the, like, two really tough people to guard.
Sue Bird
What about, like, on the other side? Who for you in general, like, unrivaled, really? Your whole career. Like, what? Defender? When they match up with you, you're like, okay, I'm about to have a long night. Maybe not a long night. Maybe just like, a harder night.
Kalih Copper
Yeah, harder night. I'll say. Tash, she's so annoying. Oh, my gosh. I love her so much, but she's so annoying. Oh, my goodness. She's just so physical. It's like, bro, you're following me. And they're not calling it. Like, she's so. Yo. She's so strong. Literally, we just played against each other the other day. But yeah, it's just. She's just. She's so physical. She's. Whether you score on her 10 times straight, she coming right back at you. Like, she's same thing. Like, she gonna give you the same energy. So I think Tash for sure. I think everybody else is like, solid tosh.
Sue Bird
That makes sense. That makes sense. So, yeah, so, I mean, you used to spend your off season is going to Europe and Now you get to spend them in Miami. Can you just. Like, I don't know. That used to be. But, like, it used to be our life. Like, your life was to go overseas, and now you have this opportunity. Like, can you just talk about that a little bit?
Kalih Copper
I just. I always have these, like, random, like, waves of, like, just gratitude. Like, I be sitting on my balcony, like, planes flying by, and I'm just like. Like, is this really my life right now? Like, yo, I used to be overseas. Like, I don't think like this. And it's so crazy. I'm saying this generation. But, like, this generation of players, like, they don't. They don't even know what that is. They don't know being overseas and your wifi going out or your water not hot or you traveling on a bus for 12 hours to another city. Like, y' all have no idea. Y' all in Miami. And the winner. What? Making money.
Sue Bird
Okay, listen, I'm being a little. I'm gonna be a little. Like, this is a little dramatic. I'm sure I cried more than what I'm about to say, but I'm telling you, there's two times that I cried overseas. Like, the most. One, I missed one of my nieces being bored. I was just like, this isn't fair. I can't fly back. I was sad the other time. Every time my WI fi went out, bawling, like, just, like, upset every time. I was like, what am I supposed to do?
Kalih Copper
What am I supposed to do?
Sue Bird
How am I supposed to live the WI Fi? Going out was a real thing.
Kalih Copper
Yeah. Yeah.
Sue Bird
That is a real thing.
Kalih Copper
Oh, terrible. I'm over there buying a data pass. Dying a data pass. Oh, we going on a road for a couple days. I ain't gonna have WI fi while I'm out. Oh, yeah. Wow. That was a different life. But, yeah, I'm just. I'm so grateful. Grateful for the option. You know, you got the option to be here. Maybe if I want to go overseas, I can. But, like, you have this. It's a great. It's not like a. Oh, it's just something to fall back on, though. This is the option. Like, this is. This is perfect. So for it to also be, like, growing, too, to be able to have different options. Like, I think that's what it's about. It's about being a part of something, and it's helping and just moving, pushing the envelope for the next generation or whatever it is. So I'm. Again, I'm grateful.
Sue Bird
Yeah, definitely. So if I were to, like, describe you a little bit. Just, like, outside looking in. Not necessarily, like, not your skill set. I don't mean, like, what you do offensively, what you do defensively. I mean, kind of, like, more mindset. I would definitely say, like, super tough, like, up for the challenge. And I think when you look at the story of your career, it is really interesting how you've had to kind of, like, be super patient while, like, putting the work in when nobody's looking. Right, Getting ready for your moment, that kind of a thing. I know you represent North Philly, always unrivaled. Is going to Philadelphia soon. We're definitely gonna chat about that. But, like, can you talk about just growing up and how Philadelphia has shaped you? How you see, like, your upbringing come out in your career?
Kalih Copper
Oh, wow. This is just such a great question. I just love this question. And this is why I'm always, like, just a kid from North Philly, because it has truly shaped me into the person and the player. I say it, and it sounds super cliche, and people say it, but it's like, no, seriously, just like, hooping outside. Hooping outside with the guys. It's like, when you come out there to play with them, it's like you not making no excuses. If you win, you win, you lose, you off. Like, if you can get back on, you get back on. Like, you're not asking to get on. Like, they just. They. They just let. They let me be myself, but they also never, like, treated me like a girl or treated me like, we gotta be soft with you. It was like, if you gonna play with us, like, you gonna play with us. Like, if you fall, you scrape your knee, you get hit, like you're fine. Like, you. You. Are you dying. Like, you good. And I think that's kind of where my competitive edge came into, because when I was younger, they was. They were always stronger. They were always faster. I hadn't really, like, found my skill set yet. I was just out there. I was just out toughing them. Like, if I'm playing with some guys, I'm like, I'm not scared of y'. All. It was that, like. And I think that's kind of where I got my, like, competitiveness from. And then just, like, just my. I think just where I'm from, it's like, nothing is ever handed to you. Like, whatever it is that you want, you really got to. You got to work for whatever. Whatever that is. And so that's literally. That's me in a nutshell. And for that to be like, My career, it's. It's cool. And I'm like, I wouldn't change it for nothing, because it really, like, even, like, as I got. As I've gotten older, it's still the same. I think my career, in a nutshell has literally been in pockets of, like, my career. It's just been completely just who I am and what I've experienced.
Sue Bird
Yeah. Whether it's, you know, starting in D.C. when you get drafted there, only to get traded, like, the very next year. Which, by the way, random story, but I happen to be with, like, Steph Dolson, I think. Cause she was also part of that trade. The whole trade thing was like, you, Steph, maybe pick or something for Elena Deladon. So that was kind of like the swap. And I remember her telling me something like, the one thing, like, Mike Tebow had said was, you were the one that he just, like, didn't want to give up, but it was, like, the only one that would get the deal done.
Kalih Copper
Yeah, that's what he. That's what he told me.
Sue Bird
Yeah. It had to have been hard to get traded. Like, right after you got drafted, I was.
Kalih Copper
I'll never forget it. Here I go again, y'.
Sue Bird
All.
Kalih Copper
I was overseas in Belgium in my bed. And I'm, like, scrolling on social media. I'm, like, seeing, like, you know, different trade things. And so I'm like, I don't know anything about trades. I'm like, it's impossible for me to get traded. I'm just a rookie. Like, I'm barely there. Like, I don't even. Like, nobody knows who I am, whatever. And so next thing you know, I start, like, seeing my name, like, in the trade stuff, and I'm like, well, why would it be me? I never knew, like, what trades it was. Like, it's about value, and, like, I didn't understand that. And next thing you know, I'm laying in this bed and it's Coach T calling. I'm like, can't be good. And he just told me. He was like, you know, like, they said the deal wouldn't be done if you weren't in it. And it's like, he's like, Selena, Della, Don. I can't. And he was just like, I have to. And he was like, this is actually really. This is good for you. Like, this is good. This is a place that wants you. This is a place that believes in you. Whatever. So I was like, sure. Like, whatever. Okay.
Sue Bird
As a compliment, or were you kind of like, dang, you traded me?
Kalih Copper
I think early early on, I didn't. I didn't. It didn't really, like, process because I'm like. Like, are you just saying that, or is that like a real thing? Like. Like. But when I got to Chicago and I. The coach said it like, she. She was the coach in the gym. She said it like, I wouldn't close the deal without you. Like, it was no deal. And I'm like, okay. Like, bet. And so I was like, okay. But then I was still confused because I got there and I didn't play. So this is where the mind game started coming in, because I'm like, okay, you said you wanted me here. I'm here. I don't play. And it's like, so, like, what?
Sue Bird
Yeah, definitely. I feel like it's interesting because you've actually been traded twice in your career, but in totally different. And that actually, to me, it's like one time you get traded, you have no idea it's happening. You don't know what to make of it. The next time you fast forward from Chicago to Phoenix a little different. You had already been, at this point, like a Finals mvp. You knew exactly who you were in this league, actually. How did that trade go down, the one from Chicago to Phoenix?
Kalih Copper
Wow. It kind of. It kind of happened. It just happened. I was looking to, like, I felt like I was the. At the. One of the best points of my career. So I felt like that upcoming year, like, I wanted to really compete. I wanted. I wanted to play with great. I've played with greats. Like, and that's. That was like, what I wanted for myself. Like, I wanted to play with great players. When you experience winning, when you experience a championship, that's what you want. Like, it's nothing. It's nothing else that you want. So I just. I wanted Chicago to put together something, you know, something great. That's what I wanted. That's all I wanted, was for them to put something together great and for them to do the things that they told me they were going to do. And so it kind of just. It kind of just didn't work out, you know? It didn't work out. A lot of people didn't want to come to Chicago at that time. So it sucked. And then it was like, you fast forward and now people, like, they want. I'm like, chicago is the best city in the summer. What do you mean? But it was just like, they wanted different people wanted different things from organizations as far as facilities and all that stuff. So some people were having hard times wanting to come there. And I'm like, yo, it's a great place. So people didn't want to come, whatever. So I just. I wanted to be in the best situation, right? I want to. And I said I would never go to the west coast. Like, free agency. What happened? Yo, I would never. I'd be like, don't even contact me. Like, don't ever call me if you're on the west coast or anywhere. Like, two, two hour flight from where I live. Don't even call me. Like, just don't worry about it. And so I'm like, looking at rosters and I'm like, yo, I literally fit in Phoenix. Like, I'm like, the perfect fit. Like, perfect. I'm like, I can't go to Phoenix. Like, what? So far away. Like, what? And I talked to Dee. I talked to her. We were at USA Basketball. We sat and we talked. And, like, she just kept it so real. Like, she just, like, she kept it so real. And I know, like, she's another person who've experienced winning and is a winner and just wants to win. So when she's telling me, like, what do you need from me? Like, what can I do? Whatever. And then I was. I heard about, you know, what they were trying to do as far as facility, and I'm like, ah, y' all making it real hard for me, like. And I was like, okay, okay, Phoenix. Like, y' all kind of want me over. Yeah, yeah, they want me over. They want me over.
Sue Bird
Yeah, no, I totally hear what you're saying. I think in some ways, a WNBA career, you know, if you play 10, 15 years, it's like, it's kind. It's long, but it's kind of short in a sense that, like, you get to a point, and I feel like you might be, at this point, the way you're talking about it, where you just want to compete for a championship, you're kind of like, if I'm not doing that, I definitely experienced that. So I hear you. It's like, if I'm not doing that, like, what am I doing? And there's other reasons, you know, to put on. Literally put on your jersey every game, but that becomes the North Star. And you mentioned being in Chicago, you did. You did get to play with great, great players. You know, a turning point for you was seemingly outside looking in was 2020 in the bubble season. You become a starter, like, you, like, basically double your points. Like, you are really starting to, like, figure your game out in the wnba. And then the next year, you know, you've Got Sloot, you've got Allie. Azari's on the team. Steph Dulcine, I can go down the diamond. Dana Evans, I can go down the list. But then you guys add Candace Parker. And so now you're playing with one of the all time greats. Yeah. So what I know between like, you guys, I mean, speaking of trolling, I know you guys like to troll each other, but you also like to sit down and, you know, share some wine, right? I know you've become close. What impact has she had on you and your game?
Kalih Copper
Ah, Candace, my little sugar cookie. She's great. Like, she's, she's, she's literally great. Like, it's so crazy. When she got to Chicago, she always talk about how I'm the only one who didn't reach out to her when she signed. I don't remember that. She's like, you're the only one who didn't like reach out to me.
Sue Bird
Whole time I was like, I was trolling. I'm talking about.
Kalih Copper
Yeah, right. And then like the first, like the first month, we probably didn't even talk. I got her a cake for her birthday, endurance training camp. And then, I don't know, like, we just didn't, like, we didn't hang out, we didn't talk, we didn't do nothing. And then we just did like, like, that was my dog. But I think like the biggest thing for me that she taught me was just like, like we had like a rift in the middle of this season of our 20, 21 season. And I was like, immature at the time. So I'm like pissed off. And I'm like, I want to prove a point. And my immature ass, like, I don't know how to prove a point. And for me it was really like, I don't want to play. Like, I don't want to play. And she, and she's like, we're literally going through the same thing. So I'm thinking like, she, like, thinking like, what? I'm thinking like, she pissed off too. She's like, you're going to go out there and look stupid and nobody knows what's going on. Like, are you really going to do. And I'm just like, like, oh, okay. Like, I got it. Like, I got it. But she's just like, I think she's just, she was just great. Like, just on the court, just, just helping me just navigate, challenging me, really challenging me every day to be what I was for us and what I needed to be for us. I needed to be that Consistently, every day. So I think she challenged me there. She. She kind of got me out of eating my, my junk. I was eating. I was eating chilies Applebee's. Like, what? I was what, man? I was eating crazy. Yes. Like, I was. I was eating crazy.
Sue Bird
She's like, you were in that queso dip at Chili's.
Kalih Copper
Yeah. Fiesta lime chicken at Applebee's.
Sue Bird
The names, you know the names of the dishes.
Kalih Copper
Yes, Like, I used to. She's like, no, like, you cannot upgrade that.
Sue Bird
Yeah, you gotta upgrade that.
Kalih Copper
She, like, you got. Yeah, she, she. She definitely put me on it. She had me drinking a little wine. Yeah. But she's just, she just was great. Like, she just like. And very, just very unselfish. Like, not trying to, like, be this spotlight, like, all the time. It was just like, yo, like, we need you. Like, this is what you need to do. Always challenge me, but, like, it was always a good balance of, like, challenging me and being hard on me, but, like, loving on me at the same time. And I think with experiencing, like, all those different kinds of leaders, like, you really can, like, you learn how to be an even better leader because you know what you like in a leader. So it was cool.
Sue Bird
Yeah. You get to find what works for you. Specifically. Yeah, it's important. It sounds like she helped you grow up. Helped you grow up. She kind of helped you take you like, on the court and off the court to, like, your adulthood. But it's important to have somebody like that.
Kalih Copper
Come on, it's time to grow up.
Sue Bird
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, you mentioned, like, at one point in the middle of your season, you guys, you know, had hit maybe like a tough patch. What's interesting about your 2021 team is it wasn't like a perfect season by any measure. Like, you guys were.500 going into the playoffs. You finished like sixth in the league. So it wasn't like a given.
Kalih Copper
Seven straight.
Sue Bird
Yeah, it wasn't like a given. So what do you think, like, happened? Like, what clicked Megan Rapinoe here? This week on A Touch More Trinity. Kalih Copper
Just clicked at the right time, honestly, I think. But for us, I think we had lost seven straight and then we won seven straight. So we were feeling really good, like going into the playoffs and we finally like figured out what worked for us defensively. Like, we knew we were, we were hot offensively. Like, we knew what we could do. But once we figured it out defensively and then we, we just, we had this confidence and like this, this aura. Like, can nobody fuck with us? Like, we were like, I think that's how we felt like once we got to the playoffs. And then I think just having that experience with Sloot, Candace and Allie, like, and I think we had such like glue players and Steph and Zee, it was just, it just literally just worked perfectly and everyone was just unselfish. And like, people say it all the time and people think it's like people just standing. It's like, no. Like, we knew any given night, like, it could be. It could be anybody. Like, I wasn't the first option. I wasn't the first option in the finals. Like, that's just what it is. Like, I wasn't, like I wasn't the first option. It was like we knew, we knew what we were doing. Like, we knew what we were playing to, but it was just like, that's just what it is, you know, and that's when you can figure out your role and be so great in it and that just be that that's it.
Sue Bird
It all fits. Yeah. I would say it's like you might not have been the first option, but it's like you all were the first option in a sense, because it did just fit. It wasn't about, like, first, second, third. You ended up taking out. You ended up taking out the Mercury, the team you're now on. You went to the finals against them, but then you helped take them to the finals. Right. So you already mentioned playing with. You got to play with Dee, Natasha Cloud, bg. Right. You got to play with all these greats. Now you're teamed up with. You have, like, a little bit of a big three with Alyssa Thomas and Satu. Could you, like, compare. I know it didn't work out for you this time in the finals, which we won't even go into, but can you can, like, compare, maybe. I'm sure it's a little bit sensitive subject. Can you compare? Just, like, not the runs themselves, but you and, like, what you've learned about yourself in two finals runs.
Kalih Copper
I've. I know for sure. Like, I learned that I. I really do have a switch. Like. Like, I have a. It's like a level. Like, and I felt it, like, towards the end of the season, but in, like, through the playoffs, like, I was. I was okay. But when the finals came, like, the first game, another level, Like, I wanted it so bad and I had been there, so I wasn't kind of feeling all those first feelings that I felt in 21. Like, those feelings are so crazy. Like, it's like you get butterflies. Can't eat, you can't sleep. Like, I slept, but I didn't eat that much. But I was like, so ready for the moment. I'm like, this is what I've worked for. I missed the beginning of the season, and it's like, it's time. I'm like, this is how it was supposed to go. Yeah. I didn't get to play. I got hurt. I got in, and I just got better at every game, and I just peaked when I was supposed to. And then I'm able to get my team to the final. So it's like, I'm here, shit, let's go get it. Like, let's go get another one. And then I got Cy and I got at and Sammy. Like, I got a bunch of people who. A few people who've experienced playing in the finals, and then I have just some humble youngins that just want to go get it, too. So I think our staff did a. Did a pretty good job just Putting us in a good position. But I love to play with just competitors, but I think just about myself, I just learned that it's always another level that I can get to, but just when I get to the finals, it's like, I'm just like, I'm here and I want it so bad. It's just like, I just hit another gear.
Sue Bird
That's like, really. That's, like, really powerful to know that as a player. I feel like it does come from experience. Like, you have to feel it, you have to live it, experience it. But now you know that about yourself. And I'm actually going to bring a couple different things together right now, because something else, you know, about yourself is what we were talking about a little bit earlier, which is like, you know, if you put the work in and your opportunity comes, you know how to make the most of it, right? You showed that throughout pretty much your whole career, but especially at the Olympics. Yeah, especially at the Olympics. We didn't talk about the Olympics much, but, you know, you didn't play in some of those earlier games only to have probably your best and biggest game in the gold medal game, which ended up being like, a lot of drama. Last second shot, her foot was on the line, all the things, but you're the one. You had that one drive off, like a pinch post play for a layup, and then you ultimately hit the free throws. That. That sealed the deal. But that was after a rough start. So we talked a little bit about off camera, just, like, what that experience, like, do you mind just sharing that, like, what that was for you and who helped you?
Kalih Copper
I think just this is why I tell people, I wouldn't trade my career for anything. I wouldn't trade how it went because it's literally like preparation, meet and opportunity all the time. So I know from experience that as long as I'm prepared when the opportunity come, like, it's gonna. It's gonna be fine. It's gonna work out. So for me, it's about always being prepared. So I'm grateful that my career was how it was, because I couldn't imagine if I had never experienced that, how differently would I respond in the biggest moment of. Biggest moment of my career? This is something that I've. I've talked about, and this is. I think it's. I think it's bigger than a WNBA championship because it's. You're the. You're the best. You're playing with the best in the. In your country. You're playing for your country. So it's a different. It's. It's different stakes. So for me, it's like when I. When I'm. I'm not playing. Yeah. Like, it's. It's frustrating as a. As a player, as a competitor, but it's like, for me, it's like there's nothing I haven't been. Been through. It's nothing I haven't seen. It's just like, you know, every day after practice, you still getting them reps, you still getting them shots up, you still doing all the things that you're supposed to do because you're preparing for this moment that you. You might get or you might not get, but odds are you going to get it. Odds are you going to get it. So I'm like, I'm D. D is my. D is my shooting partner. The Olympics. And it was probably, like, me, her, and Plum, we was together every day, and one day, we were all kind of, like. It was just like a wacky day. Like, we could all just feel it, and we shooting. I'm missing some shots, so I'm visibly frustrated. Just, like, just kind of just frustrated, normal. And Dee is like. Like, you are like, you okay? Like, you okay? And then she's like, you know, we talked about, like, USA Basketball and just, you know, how hard it is and whatever, and she's like, you're gonna win a game for us. I'm like, okay, Dee, I'm gonna win a game for us. Like, all right. She's like. She's literally said this, so when it happened, it was just, like. It was just super crazy for me. But just thinking about, like, her experience, like, she's been a part of this, so she's literally seen. She's seen it all. So she literally knows. So I'm like. So, like, just, like, looking back on it now and her saying that to me, and it also kind of. It changed my whole mood, my vibe, and it's like, it kind of snapped me out of it. Like, I was in, like, a little. A little funk about it, and it's like, it's all right. Like, you okay? Like, it's cool. Like, and then you also. You're not the only one. Like, you are, and you're here. Like, you're here. So it's, like, kind of had that moment where it's like, it's normal, and I just snapped out of it. Like, it's easy. I'm just. I'm out of it. I'm back. We shoot and we practice and compete in. And then, like, I said, Just for it to happen the way it did, it was just.
Sue Bird
It was.
Kalih Copper
It was crazy. But again, like, that's just another story that I love to share with people who have similar situations. It's not too many people who can feel inspired by something that they've seen that they're going through. So for me to have, like, grown into this franchise player and had to kind of work my way through and, you know, get to play in the Olympics and then, like, win a game, win the biggest game for us, it's just. It's so rewarding. It's like, it's so. Everything that I've ever been through was all worth it. So like I said, I just. I'm so big on just sharing it because I know it's somebody out there not playing early in their career and it's just like, will I ever play or what do I have to do? Like, and it's like, that's really not the end for you. Like, I want somebody to be able to look at my story and be like, nah, like, I could do that. Like, I can control the things that I can control and I can, like, do what Kai did. So.
Sue Bird
Yeah, that's incredible. That's really incredible. Well, you're now, this week about to have a little bit of a full circle moment. Unrivaled is heading to Philadelphia, first stop outside Miami, obviously headlined by you, Natasha Cloud, who's from there as well. You guys will be playing a professional game in your home city. Like, I mean, I can only imagine, like, so, like, talk about what the moment is. Talk about, like, what you're excited about, about playing there. Talk about all of it.
Kalih Copper
One, I'm just, I'm super grateful for Unrivaled. Like, I've never played home as a pro. I've played home in college, like, a few times, but, like, as a pro, it's different. It's different in my. What, like, in my city. Like, I'm like, when I say kid from North Philly, y', all, I'm from the. I'm. I'm from deep in there. Like, so, like, I talked about it a little bit on a broadcast. Like, the guys I used to hoot with, like, they watch me, like, they watch me on tv. These guys have. Half of them never been out the city, haven't gone anywhere. So for them to see me in person, from this little girl who really couldn't hoop or they was, like, who they really shaped and who they really put on, that is so dope. Let alone my family, my friends, it's such a moment for me, but I'm just super happy for our arrival to, like, the first tourist stop. Like, I feel like I. I'm from the best city ever, but one of the, like, a really good basketball city, a really good sports city in general. Like, it's sold out. It's. It's going to be crazy. It's. It's sold out completely.
Sue Bird
Yeah. Like, I know it's coming. I'm.
Kalih Copper
I'm hyped. I'm so hyped.
Sue Bird
You're going to get this question 100 times, so we'll ask it here first. You've probably already been asked, how many tickets? What are we looking at here? How many people you got coming?
Kalih Copper
Yo, I asked the first time they asked me how many tickets I needed. I think I said 90. And then I was like, all right, I'm gonna be reasonable.
Sue Bird
90.
Kalih Copper
And I came down. I said 90. I didn't say that. That was kind of like. That was me, like, inviting, like, everybody.
Sue Bird
Like, I was a stuff.
Kalih Copper
But, like, my. Yeah, yeah. But like, my core people. I got 60 tickets, too. 60.
Sue Bird
I love that.
Kalih Copper
These are my people.
Sue Bird
Like, yeah, obviously your family. You talked about the guys you grew up playing with. Are we talking like, high school coaches, teammates, like, friends, relatives, like, just everything?
Kalih Copper
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Sue Bird
90 sounds right.
Kalih Copper
My tickets are my. Yeah. See what I'm saying? I needed the 90, but I was.
Sue Bird
Like, you know, kept the 90.
Kalih Copper
That should have kept the night. But I was being nice. I was being nice. That just cool.
Sue Bird
I tell people, you know, I'm gonna be buying tickets.
Kalih Copper
It's okay. Some people did, and I like that they did that. Like, I like some proactive people who, like, you know what? I'm not gonna stress you out. I'm gonna go buy a ticket. Yes.
Sue Bird
That goes so far. When your friends or whoever is like, hey, I didn't wanna bother you. I already got mine. Oh, thank you. Thank you.
Kalih Copper
I pray that they see this. Please highlight this. Exhibit A. This helps me clip it. Yes.
Sue Bird
Oh, that's so funny. Well, I can feel the excitement kind of coming off you right now. You get to go home. You get to play in front of your everybody, Literally everybody. You know, so that's super exciting. I'm super happy for you, and good luck. Thank you for chatting with me. This was amazing, man. You got an energy about you. This has been fun.
Kalih Copper
Thanks so much. This was great. I'm grateful. This was just cool to just share a little bit of me. A lot of people don't really know me like that. So this is cool platform. Thank you.
Sue Bird
I literally skipped probably like half my questions just because of time. So you can come back on. We can share more.
Kalih Copper
Hey, just call me back. Just let me know when you're free.
Sue Bird
I did. I saw you on the broadcast. So you got that going for you too.
Kalih Copper
Yeah, I gotta practice some more, but I do, I kind of like it. I do, I do. And I'm like low key shy. So I'm like, I don't know when I'm supposed to talk, but this was like a first time thing. So I'm like, if I get some training, like you could do anything you work at. Like you practice it. I just need some practice.
Sue Bird
You heard it here first. Everybody get some practice. Man, that was so fun. I mean, I said it at the end there, but the energy is palpable. I'm so hyped for her that she gets to go to Philadelphia, gets to go home and play, but I think she said it best. The best way to sum this whole interview up and to really sum up her whole career is preparation, meeting, opportunity. She's lived it, she's experienced it. And even better, she can pull from it. She knows she has a switch. So thank you Kah for joining us. And guys, you can check KAH out this weekend. Unrivaled is going to Philadelphia. We've got the Breeze taking on the Phantom. 3-on-3 Benefits:
Forced to constantly engage on both ends, Copper says the format speeds up decision-making and improves shooting and conditioning.
“You constantly, you in every play. So it's never like fives, you know… one possession I'm in the corner chilling… No, never that. Like you on.” – Kahleah Copper [27:24]

[34:48-39:28]
Rooted in North Philly:
Copper attributes her toughness and edge to her time hooping outdoors with the neighborhood guys, never being let off the hook because she was a girl, and having to earn respect.
