I’m joined by Jana and Yara from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) Palestine Society (@soaspalestinesociety) for this week’s episode. We unpack Ben and Jerry’s long-standing complicity and profitization off of Israel’s occupation of Palestine and the illegal settlement regime. Through the lens of an emerging phenomenon called ‘Corporate Woke-washing’, we discover how the ice cream company’s beloved ‘progressive’ infographics and branding are not quite what they seem. The Swiss March 7th referendum to ban facial coverings in public, a campaign rooted in Islamophobic rhetoric, shows us there’s a little more to Switzerland than just cows, the alps and cheese. I’m joined by guest Imaan (@imaan.s.khan / @_peopleweshouldknow_) for this week’s episode. We unpack the islamophobic rhetoric and propaganda surrounding the proposal, the idea of feminist solidarity, and the realities of the direct democracy which Switzerland operates in. For our second episode of the series, @imaan.s.khan & I take on some of the most controversial, yet longstanding elements of our society - prisons and policing. In the past 40 years there has been a 500% increase in the populations of people in prisons and jails in the United States. But what guides this growth? We explore the role of the booming private prison industry & its built-in profit motive, the school-to-prison pipeline, as well as the hundreds of thousands of dollars it spends in political lobbying every year. Going even further, we get to the root question of why and how we as a society decided that prisons are the cornerstone of our justice systems in the first place. Why are they even needed? We talk the social contract, the history of torture in eighteenth century Europe, ‘Othering’ and national identity making, colonialism, SARS in Nigeria, and how the law enables all of this to happen. As always, the episodes drop when I drop em, full length on here & snippets on IGTV. Comment below or DM suggestions/requests for topics, guests, and music features!
