Podcast Announcer
Welcome to the Black Entrepreneur Experience podcast Inside the business buzz and brilliance of Black Entrepreneurs. Here is your host, Dr. Francis Arlene.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
Quick note before we get into today's episode. If you're a small home health agency owner, you already know this. Most agencies don't fail because of census. They fail because of continuity and compliance gaps that don't show up until it's too late. I've been working directly with small agencies around continuity, planning, compliance, readiness and operational stability, especially owners who are wearing too many hats and don't have a real plan if key people, systems or processes break. This isn't coaching and it's not a course. It's hands on consulting to help you reduce risk and build something that can actually survive audits, turnover and growth. If that's you and you want to talk, you can find me@drfrancisrichards.com all right.
Let'S get back to the show. What happens in Vegas goes all over the world on Black Entrepreneur experience, episode number 536. Thank you for joining us as we elevate the Black Entrepreneur experience by interviewing CEOs, thought leaders, innovative thinkers and black entrepreneurs across the globe. I'm your host, Dr. Frances Arlene. Today we're joined by Dr. Tyrell Rio Lewis, author of Turn youn Purpose Into Profit where he shares real life insight on turning passion into purpose. After overcoming personal health challenges, he founded Sea Moss and Natural Herbs and now owns a natural herb farm in Grenada. Welcome Dr. Tyriel.
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
Thank you so much for having me.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
I've given our audience such a brief bio. Why don't you fill in the gaps, share with our audience what you'd like them to know about you and your business.
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
Well, with Sea Moss and Natural Herbs, we are a fully vertically integrated wellness institution. All of our products are directly sourced from our land. I own 100 acre untouched jungle out in Grenada, the island of Grenada, so everything is responsibly sourced. I also control a private sector of the ocean where we wildcraft CMOS and all the products are made in house. We're just trying to get it to the people.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
So let's back up a little bit. Tell us about why CMOS in your journey.
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
So the body has 101 minerals that it requires to function with CMOs it has 91 of those minerals. But how I got into it was because several years ago I ended up catching sepsis and almost lost my leg and died. That's how I started my wellness journey. And then as I started doing a lot more studying and became A ethnobotany practitioner. That's when I started realizing the different benefits of CMOS and herb. That's what kind of put me on that path.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
What is something that we as consumers don't know about CMOS that we should know about CMOs?
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
Well, one thing it's important to know is where you get your CMOS from. That's very important. Currently, there are a lot of fake products out on the market. You want to make sure that you're getting your CMOS from a place that you can verify the authenticity. And again, one of the other things that a lot of people may not know about sea moss, we just like what I was saying, that it has 91 essential minerals that your body needs to function. So it's almost like saying it's the ultimate super vitamin.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
I take a lot of herbs, but I've never experienced or taken cmos. Talk to me as a neophyte consumer on cmos, why should I start taking CMOS besides it having the essential minerals, what will it actually do to and for my body?
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
So one of the main things with taking CMOs, outside of the 92 minerals, it helps support cellular repair, enzyme activity, hormone production. It also helps balance your nervous system, and it's also good for your blood, bone and muscle health. If your minerals are low, nothing else works like CMOS does. It also helps support stamina and vitality. It converts food into energy. It helps reduce fatigue. The list of CMOS just goes on one. One other interesting attribute from CMOS also is it supports adrenal and thyroid function. And I know that's something that a lot of. I've noticed this in a lot of African American women that they do have a lot of thyroid issues. So CMOS is also a good support system for that. And it also gives you clean energy. So it's not like a stimulation like when you take something people, if they take, if they drink coffee, caffeine can make you jittery. When you take cmos, it works internally, so it doesn't really hurt your system too much. Another thing, CMOS is rich in zinc, iodine, iron, and a lot of good sulfur compounds. So overall, CMOS helps your body defend, repair, and recover faster.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
And how do you take the sea moss? Are you taking it as a tea? Are you taking it as a tablet? Are you taking it as like a liquid vitamin? A spoonful of it.
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
So there's two different ways you could take CMOs. The most popular form that a lot of people are familiar with is in gel form. So basically, what you do is you buy the raw cmos. Plus you got to rinse it and wash it. If it's coming from, if it's coming from the ocean like it should, soak it in some lime water and you can add whatever kind of fruits you want to it and blend it up. Take 2 teaspoons or tablespoons of that a day and you can go about your way. But another easy form to take is in supplement form. So we also provide supplements as well for people. So between the CMOS gel and supplement form and a lot of culinary people, they like to put it in a food. I have it personally taking it to that like cmos, it tastes, it tastes, it tastes good. But it's definitely, if you've eaten it raw, it's definitely an acquired taste.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
Okay, and what I want you to talk about is if someone's interested in purchasing CMOs from your company, how would they connect?
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
If someone wanted to purchase CMOs, they could go to CMOs and natural herbs dot com. That's how they could purchase some CMOs from us. CMOs and naturalherbs dot com.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
Thank you for that. I want you to have a monologue. I want you to name a person that has been so instrumental in your life. Who is that person and what are you saying to that person? Dr. Tyriel?
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
I would have to say my mom. My mom is recently deceased. One of the things that I really, really admired about my mother was she's a very hard working person that didn't complain and just a very tough and strong woman. And I always admire that about that. I didn't never look at myself as being a tough person. I could cry over anything. But my mom was a really strong woman and she worked really hard, gave me anything. We didn't grow up rich or middle class. We still kind of grew up fairly poor, coming from far Rockaway, Queens in New York. But I can't say I had that same struggle story as a lot of my neighbors and friends of not eating and roaches in a cereal box. I didn't, I didn't really have that experience. My mom pretty much made sure that I was well taken care of. But one thing that I really, really love, the choice that my mom made was to send me to a yeshiva. I actually went to a Jewish school where they wear yarmulkes and tell it. So I started out going to a yeshiva and then they wanted me to actually change my religion to become fully Jewish. And my mother, she, she wasn't with that. So she ended up taking me out of there and then sent me to a Catholic school. So I feel like that educational foundation is what was able to keep me out of falling victim to the traps of what's going on in our neighborhood. And it also gave me an advantage of being able to be well balanced, very educated, and also educated from knowing how to navigate the life of the ghetto.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
And thank you for that and our sincere sympathy for the passing of your mother.
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
I appreciate that.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
What problem exists in the world today that you would like to solve?
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
I would like to solve the silent war on people's health. If you notice, it's a lot of things we can't get anymore that is pure, organic and even good for you. And I've never really been like one of those people that was a super health conscious person. But after I was, after I got sepsis and then I started down this journey, I started realizing a lot of people health benefits are related to food. And when you think about it, when you start seeing the different chemicals and pesticides that they're putting, even spraying on vegetables, at some point somebody has to help educate our community and give them opportunities to have things that could support their health journey. Because that really, really is starting to become a bigger problem as time goes on. We're getting 3D printed meat, we're getting watermelons, no seeds, genetically modified vegetables. And at some point people are going to have to make sure that they have some kind of herbal regime to help their bodies stay balanced.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
Now that's interesting. When you Talk about the 3D printed meat, how would someone know that the meat was actually 3D printed?
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
I wouldn't really know either why we got to do something about it, because I'm not sure if from a few articles that I read, I'm not 100% sure if they're actually on the shelves yet, but it is something that I'm seeing that a lot of whistleblowers are making comments about.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
Absolutely. And that is so true. When we look at our health and give some tips or strategies that you would tell individuals just something basic that they should do in order to advocate and to be more informed about their health.
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
Well, one of those things is definitely follow me on my social media platforms at Dr. Tyrell Lewis. I'm starting to be a lot more active thanks to my staff. They're forcing me to kind of come from behind the background and say people want to hear from me and people want to see my transition from going from the music business into the wellness business. Definitely educate yourself, find reliable sources to get the education from. I was doing a program called I hate working out. Because I was. I didn't like working out, but I was encouraged people. It was just a little play on words to at least encourage people to at least do something basic. If you don't want to go in a gym and lift up 100 pounds and going crazy like you see a lot of these fitness gurus do, because I think that turns a lot of people off. At least walk, at least stretch, at least when you're sitting in your chair, do some leg raises. So I started doing a little program called I hate working out. And it's actually going really good. I might have to bring that back because a few people have DM me like, we need some more exercises. I would say that. And I'm a balanced person. I'm not saying you gotta cut out all the foods that you like. There's people who don't smoke cigarettes and they catch cancer. There's people who eat healthy and they have diabetes. One of the things that you want to just make sure you do is just keep a balanced lifestyle. It's not if you ate a couple of burgers, you know, you're eating a lot of fried food. All right, well, this week, you know, chill out. Because I think sometimes people feeling like they have to be extreme is what keeps them away from being consistent with their health journey.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
Absolutely. What is your goal for the business? The sea moss and natural herbs business, what is your goal?
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
My goal with sea moss and natural herbs is to be able to provide more nutrition for the body. And we're going to release a lot of new products. We're more than just an herbal company. We more than just a company called about herbs. So we release. We're. We're on the path to release our own herbal trail mix. We have herbal honey sticks. We got some herbal potato chips coming. And we're going to enter a lot of different other industries as far as beverage, animal care, and just to be able to provide the purest and most authentic supplements and herbal products that could support the system in your body.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
Talk about your transition. You started out in the music industry, and then you went into health and wellness. Talk about that. Talk about your beginnings in the music industry. For those that are not familiar with your backstory.
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
Well, actually, I started out in marketing. I was doing marketing for field marketing for the United States Army. I was part of the team that helped transform the United States Army's campaign from be all you could be to an army of one. And then from there, I started Doing entertainment marketing. So I helped launch a lot of superstars from Rihanna, Kanye West, John Legend, Pretty Ricky, Fantasia. A lot of people mostly know me from Jeezy the Snowman. So that was like my most notable campaign that I was a part of, the Jeezy the Snowman campaign. From there I managed almost every DJ in Atlanta, from Dave Chappelle's DJ to Usher's dj, you name it. I used to manage Vivian Green, Gangsta Bull, God bless the desk. He was a part of three six Mafia, another young lady named Amil that was formerly part of Rockefeller. So I've been. I've been around in the music industry for quite some time. Helped young Jock with his music, getting his songs played on radio, you name it. I probably had my hand in some artist's career from at least in the 1999 to definitely 2010. I also helped launch Keeping up with the Kardashians, seasons one and two. I did marketing for I Want to Work for Diddy, making the band so rock, you name it. I pretty much had my hand and a lot of different avenues in the industry. And now I wasn't at the private Diddy parties, only, only the ones that were at a club.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
And then talk about transitioning into health and wellness.
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
Several years ago I was in Turks and Caicos and somehow I cut my foot on a rock or somewhere in the sand. I don't know, just a really minor cut. Somehow some kind of bacteria got inside the cut. And then from there I actually had a clothing store as well in Trinidad and one in Jamaica Avenue in New York. So I left Turks and Caicos, went to Trinidad and I was like, man, my foot is really hurting really bad. So ended up going to a doctor out there and they were saying it's possibly athletes foot or something. And I was like, man, I had athletes football for. I do not feel like this. But the doctors out there were amazing. So I ended up saying, you know what, let me get out of here and get back to the United States. They told me the same thing. But the next morning when I came back home and my blood results came back, they rushed, they said, you need to get right back to the hospital now. You have sepsis and osteomyelitis. They said they have never seen anyone with this level of infection without all their organs shutting down. And it was a really, really scary moment. And a good friend of mine, I want to say she was from Honduras, not 100 sure, but she used to sneak in some herbs into the hospital and say, hey, real, I'm known as Dr. Tyrell Lewis. That's one of my new monikers. But most people know me as real. So she said, hey, real, take these herbs, please. I just take whatever she gave me. I didn't even know what she was giving me. And I remember going to see my infectious disease doctor and she said I had a miracle. She said there was. She has never seen anyone with that level of infection walk out a lot or without getting some amputated. So that started striking my curiosity. I've always been into, like, really spiritual person. And I believe anything that's. God put everything we needed on this earth. So why wouldn't there be things that help heal the body or help support your system when it's feeling low? So then that's when I just really started getting into my studies and studying more. And then I finally got an opportunity to acquire 100 acres of land out in Grenada and get a special situation where I could control a private sector of the ocean where I'm one of the only people that's allowed to Wildcraft Seymour. The area is protected. No cruise ships. Anything could go about it. So that really started putting me on that journey. And then also with the music business, it wasn't fulfilling my soul. I had my second daughter, my youngest daughter, Madison. It was just, you know, the lifestyle of music business was really fun. But then at some point, I just started feeling like it's time to grow up. So I let me grow up a little bit, and I just started down a different journey of just opening different restaurants and clothing stores, and I just went on an entrepreneurial journey. But then when I finally, finally really started taking my wellness journey a lot more serious is when I said, I think I found where my actual purpose is. And that's what was interesting, because I wrote a book called turn your purpose into profit, which is a spiritually based business book. But I wasn't living in my purpose. I'm telling everybody what they should be doing, but I wasn't taking my own advice. I don't know if it was because I didn't really see where the money was. Entertainment business, you get paid very handsomely. And I think over time, I just said, you know what? I'm stopping everything and I'm gonna focus on my wellness company.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
That's awesome. When you talk about Dr. Real, when you talk about purpose, finding your purpose, and I agree, I think a lot of us are not living in our purpose and living in our lane. Talk to that person. What advice would you give them in reference to finding their Purpose. And how do they know what their purpose is?
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
One of the interesting things I did with my book is I put a diagram in there that helps people discover that what their purpose is. It's a Venn diagram. So all you got to do is fill it out. If you want the book, you can get it out. Turn your purpose into profit dot com. But one of the ways that I think this could help a lot differently on how I got there. So while I was going through my journey of trying to figure it out, I saw a story about a young man who he felt his purpose in life. Your purpose is that burning desire on why you feel God has put you on this planet. What is your purpose for being here? Because we all know it's not just to just make money and drive a nice car and get a nice house. There's an actual spiritual purpose, what that you should fulfill while you work this planet. But I saw that a gentleman felt his purpose was to show people and educate people on God's creation. So then his passion was riding bikes. So he ended up starting a bike touring company with just a few people as usual. But he'll take people through a tour through a city and just show different landmarks and agriculture and different architecture and explain it. And ended up turning that into a million dollar business. Yeah, Doing bike tours and taking people through neighborhoods and explaining God's creations. And I was like, wow, that's amazing. And I realized that for me, I'm a helper. So my purpose is in helping people. I've always been doing that. I've been helping people blow up their brands in the music business. Help you. I'm the friend that people could call at 3 o' clock in the morning with a flat and I'm gonna get out the bed and go pick them up. So I realized that God sent me on that path to have various different businesses to be able to run this business very efficiently. Of course, if I'm dealing with a restaurant, I have to have a certain level of quality control to make sure there's no cross contamination and people aren't getting sick from the food. You have to have that same quality control when you're dealing with herbs, because these are things people are actually consuming. I had a really large lifestyle marketing company, so I know how to market. I had a clothing line, so I know how to make sure the merch is looking a certain way. So that way we can invite people into our culture more than just selling them an earth. You could buy herb from anywhere. But with us, it's More of a family. And it's a culture and we're. We want to build that so people could feel more comfortable. And I think also it's important because it's for people that's like me. Like I said, I'm not the extreme herbalist, so you're not going to see me in a dashiki and burning incense all day. I wanted to kind of pull people in that our health conscious, they know they got to do things for their health, but they still might want to have a little fun and go outside. I don't want them to feel condemned from that. Just make sure that you're taking a break and treating your body as well as you treat yourself to luxury things to discover your purpose. It's that burning desire or what you feel you will put on this planet for. I just kind of went all the way around the block on that.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
To summarize that, Dr. Real, what are you put on the planet for specifically helping people?
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
I know I have a wellness business, so, you know, the politically correct answer would be to help people with nutrition for their body. But for me, it is just helping people all across the board. But I did find that my passion was learning more about how the human body works and plant medicine. I'm also from the Caribbean. My dad's side of the family is from St. Thomas. My mom's side of the family is from Antigua. So we've always been taking herbs in some kind of form. But as a kid, of course, you know, you don't. You might not be paying attention too much.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
Speaking of herbs, it's the first of the year. A lot of people are making New Year's resolutions. I'm going to eat healthy. And I like that, that holistic approach that you talk about the total person, the whole body and balance, and you don't jump on the treadmill if you haven't even walked in 30 years or something like that. When you talk about herbs and someone is listening and they want to get more into herbs, and I do. And just to kind of level set, I do a lot of herbal medicine myself, like experimenting. One of my favorites is I do oregano oil. And I take that to keep from coughing if I ever have any coughs. Okay. But to take oregano oil, you have to know how to take it, because you can't just put it on your tongue and definitely take the ingestible kind because it'll burn your lips, right? And then I found that if I take magnesium, then magnesium has given me, like what herbs should do to your Body. It'll do to my body. Right. A lot of people will take magnesium if they're constipated or whatever. When I took magnesium, not only did it fully run my system tmi, but it also gave me kind of a vertigo type of effect. And then I got very nauseated. I'd like you to talk to the audience that's listening about how they should start out taking herbs. If you have any advice about that.
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
Oh, yeah. So herbs work with the body and not against it. So that's the first step. Because everything that's actually running inside your body is already inside the plant. They support your organs instead of forcing a single reaction. Because everything that's happening inside your body, there's a plant that has those natural compounds. One of the reasons why I was telling one of my friends that takes a lot of different, like synthetic products. One of the things I told them to be careful for is when you take those synthetic products, they interfere with your body's natural abilities to produce that hormone. And herbs work with your body because it's already a part of your body. So that is one of the best things. Also, herbs address root causes and not symptoms. So that's something that's super important. So I would tell people to start off with some herbal teas and supplements. And the most important part is where it's sourced. That's the most important part. I haven't ran into any herbs that do too much damage. But of course if you're on medication, certain herbs can interfere with your medication. So you have to be mindful of that. But right now I haven't seen too many documented instances where herb was actually harmful to someone unless it interacted negatively with the medication. So I would tell people start off slow with an herbal tea. We don't treat symptoms, we address root causes. So when you need to find actually on my website, it should be launched hopefully before you air this. But we have what's called the path. So this is for people who don't know actually what herb to get. You fill out an assessment and then you'll get a three tiered path system that helps you with what herbs you should try an intention card. It also comes with a grounding, a ground in stone and some really nice crystals. That would probably be the best way. Just take that assessment off our website. It's called Seymour's and Natural Herbs. It's a VIP division that we started called the Herb Bar and that'll really help you ease into it. I would say that would be the first place because One thing that I noticed that is scary with this type of industry, it's like a few others, people are just waking up and saying they are who. They're making all these tea blends that and some of those herbs don't even work well together. So you really got to make sure that the person that you're getting your products from is a knowledgeable company and also responsibly sourced with the products. I don't have that many years of experience behind me as an herbalist, but, well, as an ethnobotany, ethnobotany practitioner. But I do have the elders that took me down that path as part of my company and my journey. So because it's just no way to know about every plant, I can sit there and study a book all day, but without the elders telling me, hey, look, I know the books are saying this, but this is what you also need to learn. That was actually pretty key in my journey of my education because I was craying. I was in those books trying to learn what every plant did, every herb. And they just kept coming up with more and more and more. And I realized once I started talking to my elders and the foragers, they were like, you really have to get more into ethanol botany. So that way you can study how these plant compounds affect the body. So you need a really reliable source on the educational part.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
And when you're talking about a reliable source, and one of the things that I want to ask in terms of for the audience, how do you actually find a reliable source and what due diligence? Because even when you're doing research on the Internet, I find you don't know what's true and what's not true. And especially with the increased use of AI and it's pulling so much information, you don't know what's true. Talk to the audience about really doing their due diligence.
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
That is a very good question because we are in the era of fake it till you make it. You have Google, you have AI Chat, GPT, you have all these different sources where people could just really regurgitate some information and look like a star overnight, educated person overnight. I think the best way I'm trying to really think about this, I'm going to really give a really good answer. I don't want to just say anything. I think the best way because I'm thinking about my situation, right? We're not the most popular at the moment, but we do have a lot of great testimonials from our clients or our Family is what we like to call them. Our people, we like to call our customers the rooted ones. Right. The people that are rooted in truth and rooted in science. I think the best way is to try to see what companies are posting actual testimonials. I would go with that, because what makes my view saw my company and didn't see me on an interview. What would make us any different than anyone else? But one thing I do know is we have a lot of testimonials. I have my own personal testimonials. My kids that take the herbs have theirs. Family members have their testimonials from taking the herbs. But just outside of my own personal circle, our rooted members have had their own personal journey with taking our herbs. And actually, our company is staffed by people that started out as customers.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
Nice.
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
So they believed in a product so much that they either became ambassadors or they became. They work in fulfillment or they work in production. That was one thing that really separates us from a lot of people. We actually have herbs that really support your body system. So it's hard to tell online, like, yes, absolutely. Because we don't. Mark. Even though I run a marketing company, we're not as consistent with marketing as we should be because we're really busy making sure that the product is A1. You might have the people. A lot of people say this, that. I know that in this field that are very credible. They all say the same. A lot of people say the same thing. You have a lot of people selling sugar, honey, iced tea, but they know how to market themselves great. And they're getting kind of the praise, while the people who are really out in the field don't get that same type of notoriety. It is a challenge. I think one of the things you want to do is at least look to see what kind of testimonials people have.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
Thank you for that. What's a belief that you had early in your journey that you now know was completely wrong?
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
I got one. My mother would be mad. Of course. My mother raised me as a Christian, and she had her thought process of the Christian belief. But I do believe that there's multiple ways that people can connect with God. And spirituality is a personal journey. There's no. I wouldn't necessarily say I believe there's one right way that people should connect with God. They have to have that internal feeling of what works for them and follow that. Because think about it. If I grew up in a Muslim household, that's what I would know, and I would think that's the right way If I grew up in a Jewish household, I would think that's the right way. I grew up in a Christian household, so of course my beliefs was that's the right way. But as I got older and I got more diverse and because I went to different type of schools and I have different type of friends from all walks of life, my Muslim friends, they tell me things that I really believe in. My Jewish friends, they tell me things that I really believe in. And of course my Christian friends, they tell me things I really believe in. So I realized that your spiritual journey is just a personal one. You don't have to be force fed someone else's beliefs. You have to find what is internal to you. Because at the end of the day, as long as you follow godly principles, you'll get to where you need to be when you're not here no more.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
And speaking of legacy, if your business disappeared tomorrow, what legacy or impact would you want to be remembered for?
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
I like to be remembered as a man of integrity. That's what I would like to be remembered for. A man of integrity and a world class traveler, but a world, a man of integrity. I would like to be remembered as a man of integrity and a man that would, would give the shirt off his back. And I've actually done that several times. But integrity is important to me. I want my kids to know that when people speak on their dad, they, they tell them, your dad was a solid person. He was a man of integrity.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
Awesome. And Dr. Tyrell, what's the biggest internal, mental or emotional shift you had to make to grow your business?
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
I'm a hyper person coming from New York. I could be flamboyant, a little aggressive for the South. I remember when I first moved to Georgia for my neighborhood, they didn't consider me a thug at all. I get down south, I was a little aggressive. You know, New Yorkers, we tend to have a harsh little way we speak. So I had to make sure that I was able to communicate effectively and softly at times. So that was an obstacle, I think. Yeah, I think that would probably be one of the, one of the biggest obstacles was just making sure that I communicated effectively and to people with kindness at all times instead of being hyper and because I never really mean anything by it. And I'm a Leo, so I get to move in the hands and then people be like who he's a lot. I'm doing pretty good in this interview though. That's some sit back, sit back leaning.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
You know, I was going to compliment you and say you seem so Zen, so mellowed out. I would have never associated that with you, even though you said you were from New York. So I think you are really mellowing out. And job.
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
Well, of course, this is younger me, right? So I've probably been this way for at least 20 years. Right. But that comes from meditative practices balancing my chakras. I like studying human design. I'm also a certified sound bowl healer. Expert sound bowl healer. People don't know about that. Certified in tuning forks. This is like the secret hobbies that I'm into. So. But over the years, once I really stay consistent with meditation and personal development, it really changed the trajectory of all my businesses. I was always a cool guy that everybody always loved me. So that was always the easy part. But it was just like, you know, upset the lion. He looks cuddly as well, but once you make a bad them teeth come out. He'll bite you.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
Dr. Tyrell, I want you to talk about your top two influencers in life or business. What lessons did they teach you?
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
I would say my top two influencers, of course, my mom for life. My mom was a person of integrity. She could be getting evicted out of her house, and if you left a bag with a million dollars in it, she'll be with her shopping cart, homeless with your bag, like, I got your million dollars still. So I think that led me down the path to making sure that every time I opened the business that whatever we produced out of that business was good for the person, good for the community, and good for your body. That will carry on into my wellness space. Because anything we produce, if it's not going to be good, we don't have to produce it. Somebody asked me something, if we put fillers and I would tease and stuff, I said it would give me more of a headache to fill our stuff with nonsense. So I rather just go around being an integrity, a company filled with integrity. Another person I would like to mention, I would say Jay Z because I, you know, from afar, from a distance, I was able to work and do some promotions for him. I did some promotions for a few of his albums and the Hanger Tour helped produce that out in Atlanta. But I would say him because in a way, you got to see this man start from. And of course, this is the bird's eye view. We don't, you know, you don't really know what, what's all the intricate details. But from the bird's eye view, I got to see him start out as a rapper, grow, diversify itself and then become a billionaire. So that would be one other person. And then my other two people would be probably listening to the teachings of gentlemen like Jim Rohn and Stuart Wild. Those would be kind of like my top people that I try to make sure I pattern my life after.
Dr. Frances Arlene (Host)
Dr. Real. If you conducted this interview, what is the one question you would have asked yourself? I want you to ask the question and answer it.
Dr. Tyrell Lewis
What does success mean to you and to me? Because I made. I made my first million when I was probably about 27, 28 years old. But I realized my success isn't defined by what I could do for myself and what I could acquire. My success is determined by how much I'm able to help other people. Quick little story. One of my assistants had to go meet Monica, the R and B singer, somewhere one time. And when she got back to the office, I'm brand new. I'm just starting, but I got a couple of dollars. So when I came outside and, you know, I'm mad at her because she's late pick dropping something off the moniker. Her manager, Melinda. I'm like, yo. And then she said, well, I caught a flat. And I looked at her car, and I was like, you drove that car? And she's like, yeah. So she got the little tiny donut on it. And then I just started looking in a parking lot, and I was the only person with a nice car. And I didn't like that. I didn't feel like if she went there, that. That wasn't that great of a representation of who I was as a leader, who I was as a business owner. And ever since then, I live by the model. Well, the first part was when I go to my office, I want to see other nice cars. That's just the surface level of it. But if you get what I mean by that, I want to see other nice cars in that. In the parking lot. I don't want to have the only nice car. So I always made sure I tried to take care of my staff the best way I could through my journey. That would probably be my answer for that. What can I do for others? The more I'm able to help, the more I could judge how successful I was and fulfilling my purpose on this planet.
