Well, hello everybody, and welcome to a bonus episode of BLEEP with Ana Navarro. Obviously, today we are here to react and talk about what happened at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Now, let me say I wasn't there. I have been invited many times. It's a big deal to get invited to the White House Correspondence Dinner, something that I've been honored to attend many times. I opted not to go this year because I thought it was absurd and ridiculous to sit with a president and toast a president who attacks the Free Press at a celebration of the Free Press. And also because for me, it hit very personally, not only as a member of the media, but also as a Latina immigrant. And I did not want to be in a room with a president whose misadministration has persecuted, maligned, humiliated and tortured my community and my community's children. So that's why I wasn't there, thank God. But then let's just talk about what happened. So shortly after 8:30pm on Saturday night, shots broke out at the White House Correspondents Dinner. It was very chaotic and traumatic. I heard my friend Wolf Blitzer, CNN host, talking about it. He was actually going to the bathroom, the men's room, outside of the ballroom, when there were shots in very close to him. He saw the gunman with what he called a very, very serious weapon, was then tackled to the ground, Wolf Blitzer by first responders to protect him from these shots. And the man was quickly captured. He's a Californian from Torrance, California, and his name is Cole Thomas. Now, you know, when I was listening to Wolf describe what happened, it hit me so hard because Wolf is somebody I love who's covered wars, whose family survived the Holocaust. And here was Wolf afraid for his life in a place where you just wouldn't expect to be afraid for your life. And, you know, one of the ironic things about this is that in 1981, there was also an assassination attempt, this time against Reagan at the same hotel, the Washington Hilton. This is one of the old hotels in Washington. And I was alive and I was in the United states back then, 1981. And I remember the whole country being in shock that Reagan had been shot. His press secretary, Jim Brady, was shot as well, very seriously. And I'll tell you how it was different back then. It was different because we were a country where there wasn't the level of gun violence and mass shootings that we see in America today. There wasn't shootings on a daily basis like we hear about in America today. We just weren't living through that epidemic. So the country was shocked. But it was also different because the American people didn't immediately jump to the conclusion that the President was lying. So I was shocked yesterday and this morning when I went online and saw the amount of Americans whose first reaction was to think that this was a staged event by Trump and his administration. That is like mouth agape type of shit. Okay, that. That is where we are in America. But ask yourselves, why are people thinking that immediately? And I'd say a few things as somebody, and I don't believe that. I don't believe that because I don't want to believe that. I don't want to believe that the government of the United States is capable of such a thing. And also, it wouldn't just be Trump. It would be a bunch of people that would have to be involved to execute a plan like that to fool the American people. So I don't want to believe that. But here's why I think so many people do believe that. First of all, I've been to this dinner, as I said, and there are layers and layers and layers of security. It is very hard for me to imagine how a man with serious guns and knives could get that close to that ballroom. You start getting going through security check ins the minute you walk into the perimeter of the hotel. You get wanded. You go through magnetometers, you. You have to show your invitation. They look into your purse with a little light over and over again. It's lines and lines that have to be made. And it is layers of security. So it's odd to me. It's odd to me that in a place that is teeming with Secret Service, with Washington D.C. police with all sorts of law enforcement. This could happen. But also, I think people jump to that conclusion, that it is staged because Trump lies. He lies constantly, daily and pathologically. So people do not trust and do not believe anything Trump says. His lips are moving. The likelihood is he is lying. Also, this is a man who has mastered the art. Forget the art of the deal. He has mastered the art of distraction. Anytime he finds himself in hot water, his numbers right now are down in the basement. His Iran war is incredibly unpopular. People are pissed as hell at the price of gas and the price of everything going up. And so people look at this and say, oh, my God, is he trying to distract us again? Because that is what he does, right? He posts crazy things and he does crazy things and says crazy things to distract us from the Epstein files, to distract us from. From his horrible numbers, to distract us from the failures and incompetence of his administration. But also, I think people jump to that conclusion because immediately after this happens, Trump has a press conference, and the first thing out of his mouth is, this is the reason why I need to build my ballroom. And then online, his entire echo chamber, all of those right wing check marks, go on Twitter and. And start making the case for why this means that Trump needs to be able to build his giant ballroom in the White House. So you put all those things together. The fact that the guy's a liar, that the fact the guy is a distractor, the fact that the reactions by him and his administration were kind of weird, the fact that the place is secure to the ground, and the fact that the first thing they do is make the case for the ballroom. And you start to say to yourself, hmm, could this be staged? It doesn't sound as crazy as it would initially. And I think that's why so many people have jumped to that conclusion. But listen, here is the bottom line. The White House Correspondent's Dinner inside the Hilton Hotel ballroom now joins an infamous list of places in America that have been victim and vulnerable to gun violence. It joins Sikh temples and synagogues and black churches and grocery stores and nightclubs and elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, colleges and university classrooms, music festivals, movie theaters, malls, parades, massage parlors, military bases, casinos. The list goes on and on and on. We are a country now where the level of gun violence just seems to have no end. And here's what makes it different for me. You see the people in that room, including the speaker of the House, the cabinet members, so many congresspeople that were there actually have the ability to do something about gun violence and pass gun reform and gun legislation. They have been unwilling to do so. It has been years, decades since 20 children, 6 and 7 year olds were killed at Sandy Hook. 26 people died in total. We were shocked when that happened and we thought for sure there would be bipartisan legislation and the NRA and the cowards in Congress did not let it happen. So now those members of Congress, those members of the Cabinet, those powerful people that for years have sat on their ass stopping gun reform and gun legislation, know what it's like to have to hide under a table. They now know what the little children at Uvalde and the little children at Sandy Hook had to live through when they had to hide and find fear and terror for their lives under a desk. So maybe, just maybe, they will take this action. They will take this experience, they will take this fear they live in their own flesh and turn it into legislation. But you know what folks, I'm not going to hold my breath and neither should you. Because if there's anything we know about this Congress as a that they are a bunch of do nothing, good for nothing sleazeballs controlled by special interest groups. So there you have it. That is where we are in America 2026. 100 years into the White House Correspondents Dinner and this happens. This was a bonus episode of BLEEP with Ana Navarro. She artfully bridges personal anecdote, historical memory, and political commentary, urging listeners not to let fear or cynicism stifle the push for real change—even as she questions when, or if, that change will come.
