Ana Navarro
Hi. Welcome to a bonus episode of BLEEP with Ana Navarro. Today we are going to break down what just happened. The US Government just unsealed an indictment against Raul Castro, the Cuban dictator. So let's break this down by going through the who, the what, the where, the when and the why. Let's start with the who. Raul Castro is the younger brother of Fidel Castro. They came to power in Cuba in 1959. They, they have been in power now for 67 years. And I say they, even though Fidel Castro is dead, he died in 2016, but they are very much still in power. This is the Castro dictatorship and their heirs. So Raul Castro is now 94 years old. He has been the defense minister in Cuba. He has been in charge of all of the Cuban government businesses in Cuba, all the industries run through and are owned by the Cuban government. So why is he being indicted and why is he being indicted now? He is being indicted for the shoot down of four pilots, three of them U.S. citizens. One was a legal permanent resident. That occurred 30 years ago in 1996. Let me explain. 94, 95, 96, there was this huge Cuban rafter crisis affecting the United States. Basically, Fidel Castro, whose government was under great pressure and the economy was under great pressure at the time, opened up the floodgates and said, any Cuban who wants to leave can do so. And Cubans fled the island on anything that could float. Makeshift rafts, inner tubes, anything that could float. They took to the seas and tried to cross the Florida Straits and get to the United States. Tens of thousands of Cubans emigrated that way. Many risked their lives, some lost their lives. We don't know how many lives ended up being lost at sea. And so there was a organization founded out of Miami called Brothers to the Rescue, Hermano Al Ricate. And it was Cuban American pilots who were piloting small planes, usually small Cessnas with two or four people on board, and they would monitor the Florida Straits. When they would see a raft, they would let the Coast Guard know. They would drop things like water, like food to the rafters and they would try to spot the rafters and save them from risking their lives or death on a few times the brothers to the rescue planes went into Cuban airspace and dropped leaflets on top of Havana saying things like, you know, rise up. Anti Communist leaflets. The Cuban government was furious about this, issued several threats. And then on one in a. On a day 30 years ago, February 24, 1996 to be exact, the Cuban government ordered the downing of the brother to the rescue planes. Three planes left Miami. Three small Cessnas left Miami piloted by Cuban American planes. Two of them were shot out of the sky over international waters by Cuban MiG jets. Why does this relate to Raul Castro? Raul Castro was the defense minister in charge of all of the Cuban military and military assets at the time. The order came directly from Raul Castro. There were recordings intercepted at the time of the communication between the MiG pilots and. And the headquarters, the military headquarters in Cuba. There were investigations that were conducted posteriorly through international organizations that proved that these small planes were over international water, not over Cuban airspace at the time that they were shot down. And these pilots were three of them US Citizens, one illegal permanent resident. Frankly, Raul Castro. And that government should have been indicted for the murder of these US citizens a long time ago. They thought about it. Other administrations have considered it and thought about it. At the time, this was 1996, there was a law that had been passed in Congress that Bill Clinton did not want to sign, the Helms Burton Bill, which strengthened and codified the embargo against Cuba. Bill Clinton, as a result of this shootdown, ended up signing that bill, that law which is still in effect today. So where did this happen? This happened today. Today is May 20, Cuban Independence Day, and it happened in Miami at the Tower of Freedom. The Tower of Freedom is a symbolic building in Miami. It is where Cuban refugees were processed. It's kind of like the Ellis island, the Liberty island of Miami, where so many Cuban refugees went through in the 1960s. When it happened today, May 20, Bente de Mayo, Cuban Independence Day. But much more than that. So that's the huge symbolism of it. But more than that, it is happening at a time when tensions and friction between the US And Cuba are at a record high. For months now, since Venezuela, since the Venezuela operation extricating Maduro, the US Government, the Trump administration, has been tightening the screws on Cuba. They have a naval blockade where oil is not allowed in. The island right now is in shambles. There's no fuel, there's no food, there's no electricity. They are living through great periods. Most of the day they spend without electricity. So it is a really difficult time. This is what the US Government is doing. Similar to what they did in Venezuela. This is taking a page out of the Maduro playbook, the Venezuela playbook that Donald Trump thinks worked so well there. And they are trying to pressure the Cuban government into regime change. They are trying to pressure the Cuban dictators and their cronies into leaving Cuba, going into exile and there being a complete change of government in Cuba. This has been going on now for months and months and months. So far the Cuban government has resisted despite the fact that there have been high level meetings and negotiations between the CIA director and Raul Castro's grandchildren who run the place. So Raul Castro is now indicted by the American government. What does that mean? The answer is I don't know. I don't know if it's going to turn into a Maduro situation where the US army, the US Armed forces are going to drop into Cuba and extricate this decrepit 94 year old criminal. I don't know if it's a symbolic pressure point. One more to add to the toolkit that the US is applying to get rid of this regime. I do know that this is going to cause great jubilation and celebration in Miami amongst the Cuban American community. The Cuban American community has been amongst the most stalwart supporters of Donald Trump. Donald Trump won Florida, won Miami Dade for the first time in decade for a Republican, thanks to the strong support, unwavering support he has received from the Cuban American community and the Cuban American community. Since the Venezuela operation in January, since the Iran war, they have been waiting their turn and wondering when it's going to be Cuba's turn to be free, to be liberated. So that is where we are. We don't know if this is going to lead to more action. We don't know what the response by the Cuban government, if any, is going to be. So far they have resisted. We do know that Donald Trump is emboldened by what happened in Venezuela and Cuba. There is no vice president, there is no number two with whom they can make deals and who can turn into a Trump toady that just doesn't exist in Cuba. We are waiting to see. I will tell you this much. You know, I disagree on a whole lot of things with Donald Trump. I agree with this indictment. Do I agree in a military operation? No, I'm not there. But I agree with this indictment. There is no doubt that Raul Castro is a criminal. There is no doubt that he ordered the murder of American citizens. He's also done far more than that. Cuba has destabilized the entire region in Latin America helping governments like Venezuela, helping leftist governments. And so we are going to yet see what's going to happen as a result of this indictment. But today, a criminal who has oppressed his country, who has violated the human rights of Cubans for almost 70 years, has been indicted by the US government. And the symbolism of that will not be lost in the Cuban American community. And let's see where this goes. But I hope that you now understand all of the machinations and what happened, what's led to this and why we are here today. Thank you for joining BLEEP with Ana Navarro.
