Again, thank you, thank you.
Jill Biden
I should have brought Willow.
Anna Navarro
Let me just tell you, I was saying to Jill, Chacha goes everywhere with me, except she never made it to the Biden White House because they had those two monster dogs that bit everybody
Jill Biden
and now we have two little labs. Well, they're big, but they're puppies.
Anna Navarro
But first of all, thank you for being in Miami. Thank you for bringing your message of optimism and happiness and a decent White House to Miami. So let's start talking.
Jill Biden
Okay.
Anna Navarro
My husband had prostate cancer, which was diagnosed early and thankfully eradicated. He's cancer free from the prostate cancer. I think there's a lot of Americans. And you know, something that really bothered me? There were people who thought, because there's conspiracy theorists and there's. That you all knew he had cancer and hid it because you wanted him to run for president. So one, how did you find out? How is he doing? And how did they miss it?
Jill Biden
You know, when you're in the White House, you have a team of doctors. I had a team of doctors and nurses around me. Joe had his own team of doctors and nurses. And so, as you'll read in my book, I kept. I went to the doctor and I said, you know, Joe keeps getting up seven times a night. I have to go teach. You know, and he. I assumed he would. You know, I. I assumed he would take care of it. And so I didn't even mention it again because, I mean, like I said, there's a team of doctors in the White House. But when we got out in January and the problem still persisted, I said to Joe, you know what? We have to go see a urologist. Joe. And so I called. I called Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, made an appointment. And that first appointment that we had, the doctor said, there's something there. And so he arranged for Joe to have a PET scan. But I never imagined it would be prostate cancer. I just never imagined it. And like you're saying, and I've talked to so many men now who have had prostate cancer, and yes, it can be. I guess the word is cured. But the problem with Joe, it's stage four, and it has metastasized to his bones. So that puts things on a whole different level. I mean, Joe will have to live with cancer for the rest of his life, which means he's on special medicines. And he went through radiation. We were up in Philadelphia every day, five and a half weeks, up and back, up and back. You know, it takes a toll. I mean, tonight Joe's at a wedding of a friend, and last night he was in South Dakota. Tomorrow he's in Philly. And he keeps his schedule, but he slowed down. I mean, stage four cancer is. And he's 83. So I think the mix of everything and the medications that he's taken has made life a little more difficult these days.
Anna Navarro
How's that been for you as a spouse?
Jill Biden
You know, it's hard to be a caretaker, and probably Joe wouldn't like me to phrase it in that way, but I'm the one who's responsible. I mean, I'm the mother, the grandmother. I mean, I have to make sure he gets the right medications. I'm the one talking to the doctors. I'm the one setting up the appointments. I'm the one to make sure that he eats well and I plan his diet.
Anna Navarro
But, Jill, that's not about Joe. All men are useless. So let's talk about this wonderful book, which I've read now, and I even and I listened to and loved listening to it because you include in the audible version of it, you include snippets of speeches and things that happened in real time. But I want to, you know, I've
Jill Biden
been a little
Anna Navarro
bothered by the reaction of some to this book who say the last thing Democrats need is to relitigate 2024. Or why is she telling us now how she felt about the debate? But she didn't tell us that during the debate. And then I looked up how many books have been written about the Biden administration in the 2024 campaign. And ChatGPT, my boyfriend told me that there is already well over 20 books that have been written. Right. Including Sin by my friend Jake Tapper, Uncharted Fight. I mean, 107 Days by Kamala Harris. So why the hell has anybody bothered by you writing a book when everybody else has written a book and they weren't married to the guy?
Jill Biden
Well, that's true. So my book came out June 2 just a couple couple days ago. And I think if they had read the book, the people who are criticizing me, I think they would know that it's one chapter of 35 chapters. I mean, the book is my reflections on my life as a teacher, what life was like in the White House, what it was like to plan state dinners, what it was like to go to NATO conferences, my relationships with other first ladies, and on and on. I mean, if anything, Joe and I do not want to have, you know, to rehash everything that happened during the debate. I mean, and that's what's happening because every time they mention it now, they show that scene. They show that moment. And I, honest to God, I have to look away because it's so painful to see my husband in that moment. Because when I was watching that from the Green Room, I didn't know what was going on. I looked at him and I thought, oh, my God, what's going on? What's happening? You know? And I wrote in my book, I thought he was having a stroke. I mean, I didn't know. And I can still say to this moment, I still don't know what happened. I never saw anything like that happen with Joe before or, you know, in these times afterwards. I mean, that frozen moment, it just. But like, you're saying now, now I have to. I have to relive it. I don't want to relive it. I think the Democrats do want to move on, and I think we're going in a really good, positive direction.
Anna Navarro
I was at the White House a lot. I was with your husband, with Joe Biden a lot. And I've never seen him like that before or since. And as I told you the other day, I saw you and him in New York 24 hours after that debate. I saw you at a DNC event for the LGBTQ because it was Pride Month, like it is now. And he was a completely different person than what I saw in the debate. You say in the book that you even wondered if he. If he had been drugged, if he'd taken something. Did you ask him if he had?
Jill Biden
I didn't ask him. I just said, can you please? You know, I didn't ask.
Anna Navarro
I mean, am I the only person here who's taken nyquil instead of dayquil by mistake? Am I the only person who's taken Tylenol PM instead of a Tylenol by mistake? These things happen.
Jill Biden
Yeah. And, you know, I just. He got off the stage. The docs were there, and I want you to know that he knew how bad that debate was. And there are children here. And I'm not going to say exactly what he said, but when I met up with him, he said. He looked at me, he said, jill, I really screwed up, didn't I?
Anna Navarro
That's not what he said.
Jill Biden
And I said, yes, you did. And then we got off the stage. I went to the Green Room to gather my things. He was with the docs, his staff. The doc said, don't worry, he's fine. We went on to do three events that night. So we went to a hotel where our supporters were waiting. I got up on stage and welcomed him. Then we went to Waffle House. I know everybody's eating their waffles or shaking their hands. There's sticky. You know, it was. But that's campaigning. And then we got on the plane and we flew to North Carolina, 3 o' clock in the morning. We get off the plane, on the tarmac, there's a band playing, lights, hundreds of supporters. We shook everybody's hands, and then we went back to a hotel for the night. But do you see how it was such an aberration? Because he just went on and the next week he spoke to NATO and took questions and the campaign rolled on.
Anna Navarro
And I think people forget or maybe didn't put into context or put it all together what the two previous weeks, the two weeks before that debate had been like, which, by the way, I'm sorry, but I think it was a little reckless of his staff to schedule him the way they did and then have him do the debate. But describe the two weeks, the couple of weeks before the debate and everything that was going on.
Jill Biden
So Joe was at debate camp. I was out on the campaign trail. So I didn't see Joe for probably maybe at least two weeks. I didn't see him during the debate camp, and I was out on the trail. The first time I saw him was the night of the debate when I flew in. And so he was at the Baek camp, and then he went to Europe, and he went, I think, you know, to a couple different countries.
Anna Navarro
Didn't he go to Europe twice?
Jill Biden
Yeah, I think he went to Europe twice. He came back, he was sick, so his.
Anna Navarro
He went to California.
Jill Biden
Yeah, he was. He was. See, she knows his schedule better than I do.
Anna Navarro
I read the book, Jill.
Jill Biden
Well, well, I wrote it, so. But. But anyway, it was a grueling time, and I think. And so.
Anna Navarro
And add to that that Hunter had been on trial.
Jill Biden
Yes.
Anna Navarro
Which had been. I mean, it was a. It was a horrible time. There was.
Jill Biden
It was a horrible time.
Anna Navarro
There's a time that you described, and I. I don't fault you for forgetting it because it was a horrible time. And it was right around your birthday, so it was. Which was last week. Well, June. Yeah, it was June 3rd. And you. I have to tell you, when I read that chapter about Hunter's trial, my heart broke to pieces for you who were sitting in that trial with your aide, Anthony Bernal, every single day. Joe was not there, but he was calling and he was suffering vicariously. So that was happening also practically at the same time. And Hunter had gotten convicted.
Jill Biden
I went to Paris twice that week. So it was the week of my birthday. I remember it really clearly. And my son was on trial. My son was a drug addict, and he bought a gun and he signed a paper saying he was not under the influence which he was. So that's. But they convicted him of that. They found the gun he had. He never used the gun. He had it for 11 days. So I went to Hunter's trial because I'm his mother. I think any parent in here would feel the same way. You would go to support your son. I went. My daughter Ashley went, his wife Melissa went, some other members of our family. And we sat there for one week during the trial. And, you know, it was. And I had my first lady duties as well. So I would attend the trial. I would leave at 4 o'.
Anna Navarro
Clock.
Jill Biden
I had to be in Paris twice that week. So I flew to. I would do the trial. I would fly to Paris. I would do. I think it was the D Day ceremonies. Then I would fly back. We had the congressional picnic one of those days. And then I would fly back to Paris. Then I would fly back to Delaware. And I slept on the plane as much as I could sleep. And it was just one of those horrible weeks. Not because I was traveling, but Hunter wrote his own book about addiction. And I never listened to the audio part of it. And to hear. And so, you know, the prosecution played that part of it and to hear him talk about, you know, being on drugs and what happened, and it was really. It was. It was really tough to hear that, hear my son say that. But I want you to know, and I want you to leave you with that. I want you to know that he. He's been sober for seven years. He's remarried, he has a son, he's doing well. Thank you. Thank you.

Hola. Let me ask you something. You want your car to last longer, run smoother, perform better. Tranquilo. I'm talking about your engine. Detengo algobueno Seafoam Motor treatment. And why millions of people use it every day to keep their engines running strong. Pick up a can of seafoam today at your favorite auto parts store. Y palante con confianza Seafoam. Jill Biden
I had to. I had to be in the moment. If I was in the trial, my head was there. If I was traveling to Paris, which I was, I'd read the briefings, and I had to be there in that moment. If I went to the White House to do one of the events, my head had to be there that moment. And as a teacher for 40 years, I think, and as a woman, I mean, I've learned to compartmentalize my life to be. If I'm in the classroom, I've got to be 100% there. If I'm home with my children, which I was after school, and doing their activities and doing all their sports, I had my head 100% there. So it's a skill I think most women have. I mean, I would bet if you ask any woman here in the audience, it's so hard when you're trying to balance your job, your family, any other things. I mean, you have to learn how to do that because you're in control of your whole family. Who's the one that makes the doctor's appointments? Or who's the one that does the food shopping?
Anna Navarro
And you're married to a white guy. Imagine being married to a needy Cuban. I would argue Merrick Garland's Department of Justice was weaponized against the Bidens. He made an example out of Hunter Biden, and he appointed a special counsel that went and ransacked your garage.
Jill Biden
Yeah, our whole house.
Anna Navarro
Oh, your whole house.
Jill Biden
Our entire house.
Anna Navarro
They went through your underwear drawer.
Jill Biden
Oh, yes, they did. Yes, they did.
Anna Navarro
How do you feel about. I mean, do you feel that the Biden DOJ was weaponized against their enemies? How do you feel about the whole thing?
Jill Biden
The thing is, for those of you who are maybe a little bit older, like I am, you grew up in civics classes, right? And you learned we had three branches of government, separate but equal. And Joe believed that from the bottom of his heart. So there's no way Joe was going to interfere with the Justice Department. No way. And so Merrick Garland did appoint a special counsel. Joe did not interfere. And then, you know, I think Hunter was really hurt by the process, and so that's why.
Anna Navarro
Do you know how many things are happening right now in the Trump White House that there should be special counsels appointed to?
Jill Biden
Yeah, yeah.
Anna Navarro
So the name of the book, I think, because I got this cheap copy that doesn't have a cover. The name of the book is My View from the East.
Jill Biden
No, not my. Just View from the East Wing.
Anna Navarro
Early on in the book, you talk about. I thought this was incredibly interesting, the process of Joe picking his vice president. And you talk about how. And it was during COVID Yeah. So the interviewing process for some of them was over soon. Some. You did have personal meetings with Val Demings, the congresswoman from Florida. You spent time with Gretchen Whitmer. You spent time with. And you also talk about the primary debate where Kamala Harris brought up the busing policy that Joe had voted against. And basically, it was like. It was a. It was a painful moment for me to watch and I'm sure for you, where she basically accused him of racism.
Jill Biden
Well, I have to put this in context. So our son Beau was Attorney General of the state of Delaware, and Kamala was attorney general, and they worked together on several things. And my kids always used to come for dinner Sunday nights. And Beau said, mom, I've met, you know, there's somebody you should be watching, and it's Kamala Harris. And I'm working with her on this case or whatever, and I think she's a rising star. So, you know, that sticks in your head when your kids say stuff to you about somebody, it sticks in your head. So I had a really positive view of Kamala. I couldn't wait to meet her. And when I did meet her, she talked about Beau and what he meant to her, et cetera. So when she said that on the stage about Jo, and by the way, their busing opinion was exactly the same. I mean, but she didn't make it sound that way. So it felt like. It felt personal, I guess, that, you know, it felt like, as I said, like a gut punch. And I was just really surprised by it.
Anna Navarro
I remember reading report after reporting that that had really been hurtful to you and that you had never quite gotten over it. Did you ever talk about it with Kamala?
Jill Biden
Yeah, I think we came to an understanding, you know, that she said, you know, that she had worked with Beau, and I mean, it just was sort of, I don't know, eased or smoothed over, I guess, the hard feelings. And then, remember, she dropped out of the race. So, you know, we put that. You put it behind you. I mean, I think the press tries to make more of it than it is because you move on. You have to move on. Or how do you survive if you can't move on? And we were talking about. Eduardo, I think you were saying it, you know, the opposite of love is not hate. It's indifference. And so if you really feel strongly about someone that you hate, if you can get yourself. You're in your head to indifference, then you've kind of. Then you. Then there's no room in your life for that kind of hate. And that's where I had gotten with Kamala. Like, okay, she said it. It's over. Let's move on. And that's what I felt we did. Because actually, she was, as, you know, Joe chose her as vice president. So, you know, you had to know where our heads were, especially Joe's. He was the one who chose her.
Anna Navarro
But there was a. There was a little game, you all. Not a little game, but there was a little process.
Jill Biden
Oh, yeah, you'll have to read about this in the book.
Anna Navarro
You have to read about this in the book. But there was a little process you guys went through where you were. He had asked you to sit in on some of the meetings or most of the meetings. And then he said, let's each of us put three names in an envelope and see when we coincide. And I guess you did this a few times. And then it was like a futile exercise. But tell me, Jill Biden, what were the names in your envelope? Well, come on. You're amongst friends.
Jill Biden
Yeah, amongst friends. So what we did, Joe, it was during COVID It was like something a silly little game. And he said, you pick your top three choices, and I'll pick my top three choices, and we'll open the envelopes every two weeks. So the first week we did it, it was like nothing matched. And then the second week, same thing. And then I think the last time we did it, we never opened the envelopes. So I don't know who he had down as his final choices. I don't. So I'll never know whether his choices.
Anna Navarro
Was Kamala in your envelope?
Jill Biden
Well, that remains to be seen.
Anna Navarro
Okay.
Jill Biden
Of course Kamala was in my envelope.
Anna Navarro
I have to say, I went to that White House a lot, and I saw a great deal of cooperation, mutual respect, and genuine fondness between Doug andhoff and you and Kamala and Joe and both of you as couple. But let's talk about another couple. Why don't we. So let's talk about the swearing in, which you write about in the swearing in of Donald Trump, current president. Yeah, him. And you go to the White House, and there is this tradition where you ride over with Melania. So you're in a limo riding over with Melania and the poor husband of Amy Klobuchar, John.
Jill Biden
John Bessler, God bless him.
Anna Navarro
Honestly, you write about that ride over to the swearing Inn, and to quote the great American linguist George W. Bush, That was some weird shit.
Jill Biden
Yeah, yeah. They. I don't know who came up with it. Somebody, you know, a long time years ago, came up with the idea that someone from the inauguration committee would ride in each car. You know, the presidents have someone ride the first lady, vice president, et cetera. So John Beschler, who is Amy Klobuchar's husband. And, you know, she's from the Midwest.
Anna Navarro
Minnesota.
Jill Biden
Minnesota. And so I, you know, I knew him as a Senate spouse, and I always thought he was kind of quiet and not loquacious at all. Well, we get into the car and thank God he was there, because he gets in, and Amy Klobuchar must have said to him, john, I know you're quiet, but step up your game. You know, you have to ask. And they probably. I bet they sat down together and wrote out the questions, like. Because he started in right as they closed the door, he's like, how's Barry? Where's he in school? And so. And her. Where does he live? Where does he live? Does he have friends? Do you have a dog? Ba ba, ba ba ba. You know? And she's like, yes, no. Yes, no. It was, like, so tense. And, you know, we're all like, when is this gonna be over and how
Anna Navarro
long is that ride?
Jill Biden
Well, it's from.
Anna Navarro
Too long.
Jill Biden
No. Yeah, too long. But it's like 10 minutes. But you can imagine, because it's somebody usually from, you know, the other party who's won. Right. Usually because that's why you're out of office. And, oh, my God, it was. It was funny. And I thought, I can't wait to get out of this car. I'm gonna write down everything that was said. And I did so because it was, like, so unusual.

Anna Navarro
There were a lot of people who were lifelong friends of. Not a lot, but a few who are lifelong friends of Joe's. Of you. Allah.
Co-host or Guest (possibly a bilingual commentator)
Who
Anna Navarro
came out in public, personally came out in public and said that Joe needed to step down, that Joe had cognitive issues, that Joe was too old. We all know what happened. How was that for you to listen to Nancy Pelosi on tv, read the George Clooney editorial op ed. It was one after the other, one after the other. There were a lot of anonymous quotes supposedly of staff, and there were a lot of people pushing for that. So how was that?
Jill Biden
Joe has been a public servant for 50 years. That's a long time. And along the way, I mean, you can imagine, we made like so many friends on both sides of the aisle. Because when Joe was in the Senate, Republicans and Democrats got along so beautifully. Yes, they disagreed. But then you'd go out to dinner with them, or you would go to their kids play or, you know, like, we were all friends. And I know it's probably really hard for you to. Especially the younger people in this audience. That's probably really hard for you to imagine. But I want to tell you, there was respect. These men and women had integrity. And yes, they disagreed. But then once they were off that Senate floor, they were friends. And it was just so these friendships that Joe and I had for over 50 years. That's a long time. 50 years. And when people started saying things about Joe publicly and it was. It was really hurtful. I mean, it was really hurtful. And it wasn't just me and Joe. I mean, you have to Remember, we'd been in public life for a long time, but our kids had two. But it's one thing to see your spouse hurt. I want to tell you, it's a whole different level to see your children and your grandchildren and hear their calls to you. And here, Ashley calling and saying, mommy, tell Daddy he can't get out. He cannot get out. People are counting on him. He has to continue and to hear our grandkids. And that was the tough part. And so when Joe realized that the Democratic Party wasn't going to support him, he made the decision. We were at our beach house in Rehoboth, Delaware. Rehoboth Beach. And I can remember that night going upstairs to bed. We got in bed, and Joe took my hand and, you know, I said, joe, how are you feeling? You know, how are you? And he said, jilly, I had no choice. And that was it. I mean, that was it. He had no choice.
Anna Navarro
Have you talked to Nancy Pelosi?
Jill Biden
I have not talked to Nancy Pelosi. I mean, I know I don't.
Anna Navarro
You were at the same funeral, right?
Jill Biden
I was at the same funeral. I knew she was going to be there. I didn't see her, so. But I got the guest list. I knew she was going to be there. But can I tell you, remember what I just said about the way it used to be, how people, you know, did respect one another? And so we were at the church, and it was, you know, for those of you who are Catholic and actually, my churches, Presbyterian, you know, sign a piece. But I knew Joe was on the end. And when they said sign of peace, Joe left the pew and he walked back, and I didn't even turn my head. And I knew instinctively exactly what was happening behind me. You know, how you just, you know someone after being married for 50 years, you just know who they are, and that's who Joe was. And he walked back to her and said, let's be friends. And they weren't going to let this destroy, you know, to have this grudge that would go on and on. And I must say, even as hurtful as it was with Joe's cancer diagnosis, when you think about that and you're going through life every day and you're thinking that each day is a gift because you don't know how many more you're going to get, a lot of those grudges suddenly mean nothing. They do. Because you think, you know what? So much more of life is so much more important. And I think, you know, that's where I've Come to as Joe's wife, as, you know, as just someone who loves him. I mean, you just gotta let it go. You can't let it eat at you. You gotta let it go.
Anna Navarro
And you also talk about losing Beau. And we are, of course, at a Jewish temple. We're at Temple Beth Ham in Miami. And you say that losing Beau really tested your faith, made you lose your faith. Have you recovered it?
Jill Biden
I think I have recovered it. When Beau died, he was 46. He had glioblastoma brain cancer. He suffered for over a year. And the doctors kept saying, he's going to live. This is going to turn around. This is. Is going to turn around. And I, you know, I was praying and praying and praying. And for those of you, I pray to God, nobody in here has lost a child, but. And then you say, you know, God, you know, take me, take me. Don't take my child. And I think I never believed he was going to die. You know, I never believed God couldn't hear my prayers and took him. And so after that, I lost my. I couldn't go to church anymore. I mean, I just couldn't go. I couldn't get past that. And we were in South Carolina, Joe and I, in a church, and we happened to be there, I think, for a campaign event. And a woman came up to me, and I was in the front pew. She was the pastor's wife. I hadn't met her before. She comes up, she kneels down beside me, and she took my hand, and she said, jill, I want to be your prayer partner. And I sort of looked at her and I thought, prayer partner? I never heard of this prayer partner. I don't know what she's talking about. And she said, give me your phone number. And I did. And she called me. And, you know, I felt that God had sent her to me to say, okay, Jill, it's time. You need to come back to the church. And so that was several years ago. And do you know, to this day, even today, her name is Robin. She and I text, we talk, we pray. And I think that was God's way of, you know, reaching out to me, so.
Anna Navarro
That. That touched me deeply. My brother died 25 years ago today, and my mother lost her faith. She passed away a few years ago as a result. And I just think it tests your medal in a way, and it changes a family forever. And the loss is with you forever. I probably miss him more today. Yeah. Than I did.
Jill Biden
It never gets when it first happened, never.
Anna Navarro
But I want to be your gossip Partner, gossip partner. I'm telling you, you need a Latina gossip partner in your life so bad. But you write in the book about the day of the swearing in and it's the last in the White House. And you write that you wake up and there is like the window is fogged up, it's frosted and all steamy. And you write that you could have written a message and nobody would have seen it because it would have disappeared until the day. You did write a message, didn't you? What was the message?
Jill Biden
I did write a message. Yes, I did.
Anna Navarro
Tell me more, tell me more.
Jill Biden
So remember how cold it was? I mean, I, you know, I said before, like hell has frozen over that day. And so I can remember they have radiators in the White House, so, you know, the heat was coming up and it was so cold and so the windows like were like frosty. You know what I mean? And so you could write it like when you're in a steam shower. And so, and it was just so tempting. And I was up so early because I had to do hair and makeup at like some ungodly hour, like five o' clock or something. No one was awake but me. And I thought I should write a message because, you know, it disappears during the day when the sun is out. But then the next day it shows up again, right? So I did write the message, but like, did I leave it? What did I write? I'll never tell. I'll never tell. I'll never tell.
Anna Navarro
Oh, come on.
Jill Biden
No, I'll never tell.
Anna Navarro
I'm getting two bottles of wine in her tonight. I'm getting that message out of her if it kills me. So we've all noticed Michelle Obama didn't go to the Carter funeral. She didn't go to the Swearing Inn. I think she's in this stage of her life where it's like, you know what? If I don't have to do it, I'm not gonna do it. If it doesn't bring me joy, I'm not gonna do it. And as a 54 year old woman in menopause, I'm all for that, which is why I'm here with you today, because it brings me joy.
Jill Biden
Oh, thank you.
Anna Navarro
But I kind of feel like you're very dutiful. Do you ever see yourself saying, nah, I'm not doing that.
Jill Biden
I am a traditionalist. I don't know, I do honor our traditions, especially. I don't know that. I just do. So I think every first lady has a right to do whatever she wants. To do. And if you look at how Laura Bush did it differently than Barbara Bush, her mother in law, if you look at how, you know, Michelle did it, if you look at how Hillary did it, if you look at how I did it, we all did entirely different things. I mean, I taught all the time that I was in the White House. And you know, some people chose not to do anything while they were there. Some people worked really hard. Every woman, because they've all been women have chosen their own path. And I don't know, I feel like, I feel like it's a platform like no other in the world. And I swore I would never ever waste one day of my platform. And I don't think that I did. But I also have to honor every other woman so far that's done the job in that she's done it, she's done it the way that she has done, wanted to do that. Whether we like it or not, I think I me, Jill Biden, I think that the first lady should have that decision to do what she wants.

There were so many things you did as first lady while still teaching in a community college. You put on some beautiful social events. Your Christmases at the White House were extraordinary. You had Carlos Elizondo as a social secretary. I told you the margaritas were so good when you were in office. But was that fun? Was that.
Jill Biden
That was a lot of fun. I mean, it was a lot of work. I worked every, every single day, even those days I was teaching, I would come home and go over to, you know, grab a cup of tea, you know, get my energy up again and go over to my office. And it was a lot of fun. I mean, some days were just horrible, but because of what happened or what was in the news. But when we started planning those Christmas parties in like March, and it took months and months and months and months. But you can imagine my staff, I have to say, they are just family to me. I just love them all so much. And we worked so hard together because we were all working toward the same goal. You know, we wanted to make things better for the American people. And that was Joe's whole philosophy, I think. And that's why I think he, you know, I'm his wife, I would say this, but I think he was like such a great president because he wanted to help the American people.
Anna Navarro
You talk about your staff being like family. Your chief of staff is here, Anthony Bernal somewhere, who's been with you for 18 years. Oh, there he is.
Jill Biden
Yeah, we've been married for 18 years.
Anna Navarro
But your actual, I mean, you know, in 2024, a very vindictive man was elected president.
Jill Biden
Yes.
Anna Navarro
And he made no bones about the fact that if he could come after your family, whether it was your staff, Anthony was subpoenaed. It was horrible. The attacks on your staff and the attacks on your family were a real thing. And Joe issued some last minute pardons, which were very controversial at the time. Did you speak to him about it? How did those pardons come out?
Jill Biden
I, I was not involved in the pardons.
Anna Navarro
My staff, I'm a little pissed I didn't get a pardon, but go ahead.
Jill Biden
My staff was not involved in the pardons. That was the West Wing. And Joe, and Joe said he would never pardon Hunter. He said that for a long time. But then because of when Trump was elected, Trump said, I'm going to go after Hunter Biden, I'm going to put, put him in jail. And we knew the process was not going to be fair to our son Hunter. And there was no way that Joe and I were going to, I mean, it was Joe's decision that we were going to let him go to jail. And so. But the whole pardon process, I mean, it was happening in the West Wing,
Anna Navarro
but I think now, a year and a half into the Trump presidency, when they see the weaponization. And what's happened to people like James Comey? What's happened to people like Letitia James? These frivolous prosecutions just to appease a vindictive man all of a sudden? Those pardons that were so controversial at the time seem to be very logical, at least to me now. So what is this stage like, and what are you hoping to build?
Jill Biden
Oh, gosh, I have a lot of plans, and Joe and I are going to. I'm going to do a lot of it by myself. I've been working on women's health a lot with the Milken Institute. I'm chair of. You know, Eduardo. I can't hang up my teaching shoes. I just can't do it. And so I'd love to go into the women's prison for women who never got their GED or would like workforce training and get a job, get a certificate. Joe and I want to work on cancer together. There's just. There's. We're building our Presidential center. I mean, it's a good chapter. It's a good chapter.
Anna Navarro
There are so many things that have been destroyed. Your Women's Health initiative as first lady, that was a wonderful initiative that started in conjunction with Maria Shriver. Tell us about that and what that meant to you.
Jill Biden
So Maria came. Maria Shriver, first lady of California, I don't know what years, but. So she came to my office one day and she said, jill, do you know that all the research that's done has been done on men? And that's why women don't have the answers to their health problems. And this has been up until 1993, I think she said. And I said, God, no. And she said, yeah. And I looked into it, and even the mice in the labs were male mice. Honestly, to God, how do you study menopause with a male mouse? So anyway, I went to Joe and I said, joe, you know, listen to this. And he said, you're right. We have to change this. So we started the White House Women's Health initiative. We put $1 billion into research and funded, I mean, all these scientists. And it was just. It just started a movement. You know, people had been working on women's, women's health, but I think once the White House put sort of this, you know, the spotlight on it, the moo, it just started to move. And so I think that women now are beginning to get the answers. But it's only the beginning. I mean, my thing is, you know, at my age, yes, we should talk about menopause, but for the women in this audience that are in their 60s and their 70s and their 80s, like, where are the answers for us? Like, after menopause, what about osteoporosis? What about, you know, aging? What about the things that we go through? Like, nobody's talking about it. I mean, we need to know, is this natural aging? Or when is there a problem? I mean, there's so much more we can do with prevention. Prevention. And that's where I think I'd like to teach women in rural areas all over the United States about how to prevent certain diseases, how to help themselves lead healthier lives, because women lead longer lives, but they live it in poorer health. So we have so much to do. And it's exciting that, you know, we women have got a band together, you know, just like we did in the 60s and the 70s, and push our health care. We need answers for our health care. And I think. And we deserve it. We deserve it. But it's only going to happen when we all come together and make it happen.
Anna Navarro
You've been a senator's wife. You've been second lady of the United States. You've been first lady of the United States. You're a mother, a sister teacher. So many different things. If I ask Jill Biden, who's worn all those hats, what qualities, what characteristics should we be looking for, or are you looking for that would make a good precedent? What are they?
Jill Biden
I think integrity, I think that has to be. Empathy, I think is absolutely. Trust. I mean, just the things that are not just the characters of the man, they're the characteristics of the American people. That's who we are. And we can't forget that. And we gotta keep fighting for that.
Anna Navarro
I think, you know what? I wanted a president, somebody that wasn't Jeffrey Epstein's best friend. My bar is low these days. I read a quote the other day, or I read a poll the other day. We're about to celebrate the 250th anniversary of America. And I read this poll where only one out of five Democrats. Democrats are feeling proud of their country. Are you proud of your country and how are you feeling as we're approaching this anniversary?
Jill Biden
I'm proud of my country. I mean, I love this country. You know, I'm sure everybody in this audience loves this country. So.
Anna Navarro
There were a lot of people, a lot of people on tv, pundits, journalists, a lot of people talking about Joe Biden's age and whether he had cognitive decline, whether he was too old to be president. Donald Trump sits there. You don't want to elect a woke president. Well, you didn't. Cuz he's falling asleep practically every day in the Oval Office. His ankles are the size of tree trip trunks.
Jill Biden
His. I didn't say any of this.
Anna Navarro
This is why I want to be your gossip partner. But are you bothered that there doesn't seem to be anywhere near the energy that there was about Joe's health?
Jill Biden
I think there's a double standard for sure. I mean, I just, I just do.
Anna Navarro
You talk in the book about how many people come up to you and I think they feel like they want comfort from you. I mean, they just want a hug, they want words, they want advice, they want guidance as to how we're going to get through this very tumultuous time. As we end tonight, this event, what is your message to people who feel hopeless and who feel helpless right now? What is your message to Americans who feel that way?
Jill Biden
You know, I do hear from a lot of people, as you can imagine. I don't care whether I'm in exercise class, whether I'm in the airport, in the ladies room. I mean, you know, they're basically like banging on my stall door and you know, they said, oh, I've. But I mean, they're so tragic, their stories are so tragic. You know, I've lost my job, you know, I mean, just on and on and on. But I do have hope. I mean, I do have hope in the people of this country. I mean, I do feel that things are going to turn around. And the things that I see that give me hope are, for instance, what's being done in cancer research and the young researchers I see all the time studying things and making and finding all these discoveries and people who are saying, I'm going to, okay, it's been pretty rocky, but I'm going to get back into government and people are looking for who they're going to, young people who they're going to support in office. And so I, you know, I'm old enough, I hate to say that, you know, I've lived through Vietnam and I lived through, you know, the death of the Kennedys and I've lived through, as many of you have, the terrible things in this country that have gone on. But we're survivors, Americans are survivors. And I really think that even though this is really a tough time and sometimes it feels like so crazy, we're going to get through it and hopefully we're going to learn from our mistakes and we're going to go on and be stronger than we ever have. Before,
Anna Navarro
How you do. How did you feel when you saw Alex Prednay Goode assassinated on the streets of Minneapolis?
Jill Biden
I felt like everybody else felt.
Anna Navarro
And then the last thing I'm gonna ask you, because I think there's so many families that are touched by addiction. My family has been touched by addiction. My husband's daughter died as a result of addiction. What is your message to people who may be in the audience today or hearing this? By the way, this is being recorded for my podcast, BLEEP with Anna Navarro. What is your message to people who are dealing with this right now? It is so tough.
Jill Biden
It is tough. And every family deals with it differently, and so many families are dealing with it, whether it's alcohol or drugs. For us, I mean, we dealt with it for I don't know how many years, a long time. And after Beau died, things did get worse than they had been. You know, I felt like my family was so out of control, but, I don't know. It's really tough. But I hope people feel that they're not alone, and I hope that I don't feel with my own family. We got enough counseling because I felt like we were trying to constantly tamp it down, tamp it down. We didn't talk. It was just so painful. And rehab after rehab after rehab, and. And it's really hard because you feel like, look at what I gave my child. I mean, I tried to give him or her the best of everything, but it's a disease. It's a disease. And if you can deal with it that way and reach out, don't be afraid to reach out for help. And I'm sorry that we hadn't reached out earlier and. And gotten more help. But, you know, and even now, I think I still think that there's a stigma. But before, I think it was really stigmatized to have a child who was. Who was a drug addict. And so they were the times. But now I think it's becoming more acceptable because there are a lot more families that are dealing with it. And please don't feel that you're alone. Please reach out and get help.
Anna Navarro
In part, the taboo and the stigma is lesser because of people like you, like Joe. I want to thank you for having me. Yeah, thank you, extraordinary first lady. I want to thank you this conversation and for having up your heart and written this book.
Jill Biden
Thank you. Thank you, everybody. Thank you.
