Ana Navarro
Hey, everyone. Welcome to BLEEP with Ana Navarro. I am Ana Navarro. Thank you so much for being here. It's been more than a week now, a little over a week since the White House Correspondents Dinner association attempted shooting. And I want us to reflect on that. I want us to take stock and I want us to think about the events that have happened and what it says about where the country is. Instead of this being a moment of unity for the country, it has divided us even more. A large part of the country thinks it was staged. That is just the truth. I don't think it was staged. I know all of my friends and loved ones who were inside that room were genuinely terrified for their lives and do not think it was staged. But the truth is that a chunk of people, a large chunk of people in America and around the world think, think that this is a staged event. And I'm talking about people who don't usually delve in conspiracy theories. I am talking about people who are smart and well read and educated who have come up to me in the last week and said, there is no way that was true. That was Trump being Trump. Oh, that was staged. And so let's think about why people are thinking that. Look, I think part of it is just the coincidence of what happened right after six years as president and skipping the dinner for five of those years, a dinner that most other presidents have shown up to. Donald Trump shows up and this happens also. The truth is people do not believe Trump. The American people, a large chunk of us, have gotten used to the idea that the President of the United States, this particular President of the United States, lies and he lies constantly, so we are less likely to believe anything he says. I think there's also a level of skepticism and gun violence fatigue in this country. Think about the shock you felt the first time you heard about a school shooting. Think about the shock you felt the first time you heard about an assassination attempt against Donald Trump. And think about how you feel now about school shootings or mass shootings anywhere or, or a shooting attempt at an event like this one. I just think that, shamefully, there is a level of normalcy that we have come to accept as a country when it comes to gun violence. But I also think one of the reasons people believe this was staged, that this shooting was staged, is because of the way Trump and Trump supporters and have reacted and what they have done in the aftermath of this attempted shooting. You would think that after not one, not two, but now three assassination attempts, Trump would be reflective. He would be grateful for his life, he would show some grace. He would call on the country to unite, lead by example on tamping down the rhetoric. Instead, just like it happened after the Charlie Kirk assassination, Trump and his ilk are using and exploiting this God awful event that we should all be condemning. They are using this event to push their agenda, to get what they want through, to attack their enemies, to silence their enemies and to seek retribution. That is why people don't believe this, because instead of self reflection and unity, we are seeing an administration that is self serving and vindictive. So let's go through some of these issues that I am talking about when I refer to the Trump and Trump administration reaction. It was within an hour or two of the shooting, when there were people that were still trying to evacuate the Washington Hilton, when there was still chaos and we all still knew little. And all of a sudden Trump and all of the blue check marks associated as Trump supporters start en masse tweeting out that this is the reason why we need Trump's ballroom. So what has been his pet project, this ballroom that? Remember a judge, a federal judge put out an injunction on an injunction on continuing the building and there's all of this fighting going on in court. Trump immediately jumps to use the events at the White House Correspondents Dinner association to push for that ballroom. That is why people raise an eyebrow and say, hmm, isn't that convenient?

In the days since then, Republicans in Congress, people like Lindsey Graham, have been pushing for a bill so that we the taxpayer pays for Trump's ballroom. Remember, he has said over and over again, he said it again last week in court filings that this was a ballroom that was not going to cost the taxpayer anything, that this was a ballroom that was a gift given to the American people by donors and by Donald Trump. Well, if that's the case, then why in the hell is Lindsey Graham pushing for American taxpayers to pay $400 million for the building of that? Do you all remember the Mexico wall? Do you all remember when we were told that Mexico would pay for the wall? Well, Mexico did not pay for the wall. There have been a little bit over 450 miles of that wall built at a cost of tens of million dollars per mile. There have been over 15 billion with a B dollars that have been allocated for the building of that. The other thing that they announced in the aftermath of the White House Correspondent's Dinner association shooting was that they were going to have limited edition passports with Trump's mug stamped on them. I mean, honestly, this guy wants his face all over the place. You would think he was Brad Pitt the way he wants his face put all over the place. Well, he's not Brad Pitt. But I just think it is so, so weird these things that Trump does, right? I mean, think about the, the level of narcissism. Think about the chip on his shoulder that he has, the need for recognition and acknowledgment and affirmation. You're the President of the United States. What else do you need? But yeah, he needs to stamp his name everywhere. He's like one of these dogs that needs to pee on every bush and every fire hydrant that he sees. And I think it comes from his dad. And so it's, you know, it's not just the passports. It's the gold coins, the commemorative gold coins, it's the banners on federal agency buildings. It's Trump rx, It's the Trump class of battleships. It's the now Trump Kennedy center. It's the national park passes and the Trump gold visas and the stimulus checks that bore his signature and the so called Institute of Peace for a man who has never met a country he doesn't want to bomb. But you know, where you never see the Trump name. And I want you to think about this. We all know very rich people, names of very rich people and you often see their names in hospital wards or you see their names in university wings. Have you ever seen a hospital ward? Have you ever seen a charitable cause? And I'm not talking about his charity, which he got penalized for because turns out they weren't using the money for that. But there has never been a Trump ward at one of the New York hospitals or Florida Hospital. There has never been a Trump wing at one of the universities that he attended or that his children attended. The only places he wants to put that name is in places that are not charitable, that are for his own ego and stroking of his own ego. It's not normal, folks. It's not normal. So that is, number one, the Trump reaction. And when it comes to the Trump reaction, we are talking about, number one, the wanting to push for the ballroom, use the shooting to push for the ballroom. And then what else did he do? Well, he did what he always tries to do after an event like that, use it to intimidate, silence and attack his critics and his opponents. So he went after Jimmy Kimmel yet again. Jimmy Kimmel had made a joke a few days before the dinner where he had made a crack about Melania Trump looking like she had. Looking beautiful, like she had the glow of an expectant widow. Jimmy Kimmel has said that it was a jab and a reference to the 25 age year age difference between Trump and Melania. But of course, immediately after the shooting, they took that joke out of context and they used it to pressure Jimmy Kimmel and to again ask for the firing of Jimmy Kimmel, something he's been obsessed with for months. And Jimmy Kimmel is far from the only comedian he has gone after. He has gone after so many other comedians, so many other journalists as well. He's gone after Colbert, of course. His show's coming to an end. CBS put his end to his show. Jon Stewart, John Oliver, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Bill Maher, Trevor Noah, Conan o', Brien, and the list goes on. So what does this do? This sends a chilling message to people who want to speak up, that you will get canceled, that the weight of the White House will come down on trying to get you fired. And, you know, it's also something that at a time, which is so ironic to me, because remember, the White House correspondence event is an event that is to celebrate the free press, to celebrate journalists. Journalists have also been incredibly attacked by Trump and his administration. And it's been people like Anderson Cooper, Jake Tapper, Rachel Maddow, Maggie Haberman of the New York Times, Peter Baker, Leslie Stahl Megyn Kelly. He revoked Jim Acosta's press credential when Jim was working for CNN in 2018. He David now indicted and arrested Don Lemon when because of live streaming and reporting on an anti ice protest inside a church in Minnesota. And the day after this shooting, the day after this shooting, he was filming, he filmed an interview with Nora O' Donnell from CBS of 60 Minutes. Norah O' Donnell quoted to him part of what the attempted shooter had written in his so called manifesto, calling Trump a rapist and a pedophile. And Trump exploded in rage, attacking her personally, calling her a bad journalist, calling her a disgrace. So a 24 hours, less than 24 hours after this shooting, that is the tone that Donald Trump was adopting. And it's just something that it's hard to understand how somebody who's now escaped three assassination attempts basically unscathed could have that reaction. It's not a normal human reaction. And I think it's part of what leads to people having these crazy ideas and suspicions and that this was a staged event. So what did he do? He tried to get his ballroom through. He announced he was putting his face on a passport. He used the event to try to silence his opponents, attack comedians and attack the media. And then of course, let's not forget one of the other things he did. They ran Todd Blanche, the acting Attorney General, who of course is dying to get the job. And it's figuring out how best to suck up to Trump and, and impress Trump so that he can get the job permanently. Todd Blanche and his DOJ ran to a grand jury and got an indictment again against Jim Comey, against former FBI Director James Comey. Let me tell you this, I have no love lost for Jim Comey. Frankly, I don't know anybody that's not named Comey that likes Jim Comey. This is a guy. Republicans don't like him because he investigated Trump. Democrats don't like him because of the stunt he pulled in 2016 against Hillary shortly the month before the election. I don't like him because I think he's a showboat. And I think some of the things he's done are rather unseemly and just not something that somebody of Jim Comey stature should be doing. I think the idea of Jim Comey walking down the coast in North Carolina, picking up all of these seashells, arranging them into this 86, 47 composition of seashells, posting about it, musing about it, was frankly infantile and stupid. But it's not illegal and it's not Something worth getting indicted and dragged into court for. And that's just what has happened. So now the Trump doj, Todd Blanche, and remember Pam Bondi, in part got fired because Trump was unhappy that she had not prosecuted and gotten indictments and prosecutions and convictions against his enemies. Like, like Letitia James, like Jim Comey. So what they are now alleging is that this 8647 was a death threat. It was a call to action against Jim Comey. Jim Comey took it down. The next day, he apologized, said he had no idea that this would be associated with this, and he took it down. But here's where I get stuck with all of this. So for the last nine days, 10 days, whatever it's been, since the White House Correspondents association dinner, Trump and his minions have been wagging their fingers at Democrats, have been accusing Democrats and left wing commentators and anti Trump commentators of using heated rhetoric that is triggering and as a call to violence. The problem is this. They do not look in the mirror. They never acknowledge that amongst everybody in America, Trump has the biggest bully pulpit and the biggest influence on the American people. And he never, ever reflects and regrets the things he has said and done, which have been calls to violence and could be triggering. So I want us to go back because, you know what happens with Trump, there is just so much shit he does that we forget some of the things, the most outrageous things he has done. And the list is long. So I'm just going to list some of the most egregious things that he has said and done in the last several years. That if you're going to argue an 86 is a call to violence, then let's talk about what these words could have meant in 2024. In a campaign appearance in Arizona, he said about Liz Cheney, let's put her with a rifle, standing there with nine barrels shooting at her. Okay? Let's see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face. As a result of that, Liz Cheney received death threats. She spent tens of thousands of dollars on security. Let's remember what he said during the George Floyd protests in 2020. He allegedly said, quote, can't you just shoot them, shoot them in the legs? Or something about demonstrators outside the White House. And this is according to the memoir of one of his former secretaries, Esper, who wrote a book. An hour into the January 6 riot, after the mob had already broken into the Capitol, Trump tweeted, quote, mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done. And you know what? During the Capitol attack, at least three rioters were overheard saying they wanted to find Pence and execute him. We all remember the chants, hang Mike Pence. Hang Mike Pence. But that's not all. Trump frequently attacked Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan. He's called her things like disaster. Remember that? Gretchen Whitmer? There was a kidnapping and assassination attempt against her. Trump attacked her just two weeks after the kidnapping attempt during a rally. He egged on his supporters into chanting, lock her up. Lock her up. Then after Marjorie Taylor Greene broke with him, he did things like call her a traitor. He started calling her Marjorie Traitor Brown. And there was an assassination threat on her son. And the subject line was Trump's own words. It read, marjorie Traitor Brown. Trump repeatedly calls out federal judges as monsters, Communists, enemies of America. In the last year, there were 564 threats against federal judges. About General Mike Milley, he said that his actions were so egregious that in times gone past, it would have been punishable by death. He said about the. Remember, he tweeted about the Democratic senators and representatives, the veterans who made a video telling the troops not to follow illegal orders. He tweeted against them that it was seditious and treasonous, punishable by death. And so we have to ask ourselves, why is it that we are holding comedians? Why is it that we are holding regular Americans and commentators to a higher standard than the President of the United States? Why is it that after things like the White House Correspondents association attempted shooting happens, he doesn't look in the mirror and say, I have to start with myself? I think that's the most normal human reaction. And let me tell you, Trump's words do matter and do carry influence and do trigger nutcases. I know this myself. I'm going to share a story I don't normally share. So in 2018, you all may remember, there was a man named Cesar Sayoc. He is currently in prison. He was the guy who had the white van covered by all of the crazy bumper stickers. And he was the guy who was sending pipe bombs to media organizations and people that he saw as Trump's critics and enemies. People like Barack Obama, people like Hillary Clinton, cnn, just so many other media outlets. And I was out of state when that happened. I was not in Florida. And I saw the news, and my immediate reaction was to call the chief of police of my city, because I immediately thought that I could be in danger of being in that list. And I wanted nobody coming in contact with my mail to Possibly run the risk of it being a pipe bomb or one of the packages shipped by this man. By then, they had caught him, but there were things still arriving in the mail. Cause you know, the US Mail is slow. And then a couple of hours later, I got a call from a reporter asking me if I knew that Cesar Sayach had been threatening me on Twitter using the same words that Trump had used against me. And I said, no, I hadn't. I didn't know he had been threatening me. I mean, if I. And he asked me if I'd reported it to Twitter. It was called Twitter back then. This was 2018. Of course I had it. Listen, if I read every threat that comes my way, if I read every insult that comes my way, I would never leave my house. And then a day or two after that, federal agents started calling and knocking on the doors of people, including me, letting us know that this man, Cesar Sayach, had an enemies list and that we were amongst those enemies. So, yeah, the fact that Trump spoke against me, the fact that Trump tweeted against me, the fact that I used my First Amendment right to speak up against the President of the United States put me and so many others in that kind of danger. So, yes, yes, words matter, but they matter most when coming from the leader of the free world. And. And he just never wants to take responsibility for the crazy shit he says that do trigger people and have done so in the past. So I don't know how many shootings there have to be. I don't know how many threats there have to be. I don't know how many more of these horrible, horrible events of violence and scary things have to happen. And yet we now know that Trump is never going to change. He's always going to act the way he does. It's been three times now. If he hasn't changed by now, he's never going to change. And that is unacceptable and something we should never get used to. And that is why the words of the White House, the words of Carolyn Levitt, the words of Donald Trump ring empty and hypocritical because they want to point a finger at everybody who speaks against them, regardless of how small a platform they may have. They want to silence and intimidate and get fired, all of those who crack jokes against them or who speak against them or who call out the abuses to power, but they never once in their fucking lives want to look in the mirror and say, what have I done to contribute to this environment? What have I done to contribute to the polarization and the violence and, and the triggering actions that are making people and leading crazy people to do crazy things. And until and unless that happens, he simply does not have the moral standing or authority to point fingers at anybody else. Okay, so that's that. Stick with me because when we come back, we're going to switch to something much lighter and much better. Going to talk about my heroes of the week.

Ana Navarro
So we're back and in this segment of Bleep with Adam Navarro. I always like to talk about the heroes and cowards of the world week, frankly, where there's way too many cowards. So I'm going to focus on the heroes. And for me, one of my heroes, somebody that's uplifted me and just reminded me what the priorities in life are is this young, young Cuban American kid from Miami. His name is Fernando Mendoza. He played for Indiana University. He was just drafted number one in the NFL draft by the Las Vegas Raiders. And of course, during the NFL draft, it's now like this big spectacle and tens of thousands of people flock to wherever the draft is taking place. And the NFL wants their top prospects, their big stars to show up so that their fans can be there and see them in person. But this kid, Fernando Mendoza, his mom Elsa has Ms. And it's hard for her to travel. And his mom wanted to host the family at home have a big family gathering. So he chose to stay home with his mother and with his family instead of traveling to the big lights, to the bright lights of the NFL draft. And I think that's just. I think that. I thought that was just such a great thing. The kids. Also, he's just donated half a million dollars for Ms. Research to the University of Miami. And I can't wait to see what that kid does. And my second hero is somebody I wasn't expecting to even talk about, because I am far from being a royal watcher or getting caught up in royalty and all of that stuff. But I have got to tell you, I think the visit by King Charles to America has been timely and it's been well done. And, you know, what did you even think and know that King Charles was funny. He's been hilarious. That dry British sense of humor. But he said things. He said things at places that are hard to say. Right? Like he made a dig about the ballroom at the state dinner in front of Trump. He made a dig about how the Brits had, at one point in 1814, tried to renovate and make changes to the White House. He did things like subtly, subtly acknowledge the Epstein victims. He said, quote, in both of our countries, it is the very fact of our vibrant, diverse and free societies that gives us our collective strength, including to support victims of some of the ills that so tragically exist in both our societies today. Human. He spoke about checks and balances. He did that in the address, the joint address to Congress. So he subtly reminded the Republicans sitting there that they have a duty to provide checks and balances and rebut Trump's executive power. He offered praise to NATO after Trump has done nothing but trash NATO. He reminded Republicans in that joint session. He reminded them about our shared responsibility to safeguard nature, our most precious and irreplaceable asset. This in front of Republican lawmakers who want to pretend the ice caps aren't melting and that we don't have a climate crisis. He met with the 911 families. He did a bunch of things that I think at a time when the relationship between Great Britain and the United States has had its tensions, when there have been personal attacks by Trump against the prime minister, when Trump has basically said that Britain didn't show up for us, that the British did not show up for us, even though they have died for us and fought alongside of us, I think this was an important visit and I think King Charles did a good job. Thumbs up for King Charles. That's all for today. Thanks for tuning in and see you next week on another episode of BLEEP with Ana Navarro. And please go ahead and leave me your thoughts, your replies, your comments. I am reading them and I am taking them in and taking the suggestions as maybe things we should incorporate. Host: Ana Navarro
In this episode, Ana Navarro critically examines the aftermath of the attempted shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner (WHCD) and the nation's response—particularly focusing on former President Donald Trump and his administration. Navarro explores the skepticism surrounding the event, the exploitation of the tragedy for political gain, the administration’s penchant for personal branding, and the culture of selective outrage. Ana also reflects on issues of gun violence fatigue, threats to free speech, and the chilling effect on critics and comedians. She closes the episode with her “Heroes of the Week,” highlighting moments of resilience, reflection, and hope.
[02:43 – 07:45]
Shock Turns into Skepticism:
Ana opens by addressing widespread disbelief about the WHCD shooting, noting that even well-educated and non-conspiratorial people suspect it might have been staged.
“A large part of the country thinks it was staged. That is just the truth.” – Ana Navarro [03:17]
Normalizing Gun Violence:
She reflects on America’s desensitization to shootings, attributing it to “gun violence fatigue.”
“Shamefully, there is a level of normalcy that we have come to accept as a country when it comes to gun violence.” – Ana Navarro [05:20]
Distrust in the President:
Navarro details how Trump’s reputation for lying breeds skepticism.
“The American people... have gotten used to the idea that the President of the United States... lies and he lies constantly, so we are less likely to believe anything he says.” – Ana Navarro [03:57]
[07:45 – 23:50]
Instant Political Opportunism:
Trump and supporters seized the event to push for the funding and construction of his “ballroom”—a controversial pet project.
“Within an hour or two of the shooting... Trump and all of the blue check marks associated as Trump supporters start en masse tweeting out that this is the reason why we need Trump’s ballroom.” – Ana Navarro [06:37]
Proposal for Taxpayer Funding:
Republican lawmakers, like Lindsey Graham, began advocating for a $400 million taxpayer-funded ballroom, contradicting Trump’s previous claim that it would come at no cost to taxpayers.
“Why in the hell is Lindsey Graham pushing for American taxpayers to pay $400 million for the building of that?” – Ana Navarro [11:36]
Symbolic Vanity Projects:
Trump sought to put his face and name on everything—passports, gold coins, federal buildings, and even stimulus checks.
“You’d think he was Brad Pitt the way he wants his face put all over.” – Ana Navarro [12:21]
“He’s like one of these dogs that needs to pee on every bush and every fire hydrant he sees.” – Ana Navarro [12:43]
No Charitable Legacy:
Navarro points out Trump’s absence from philanthropic naming rights (e.g., hospital wings, university buildings) despite his branding obsession.
“There has never been a Trump ward at one of the New York hospitals ... The only places he wants to put that name is in places that are not charitable, that are for his own ego.” – Ana Navarro [13:22]
[13:45 – 23:50]
Campaign Against Comedians and Journalists:
Trump uses his platform to attack comedians (Jimmy Kimmel, Colbert, John Oliver, etc.) and journalists following critical jokes or reporting.
“What does this do? This sends a chilling message ... that you will get canceled, that the weight of the White House will come down on trying to get you fired.” – Ana Navarro [15:28]
Contradiction Amidst the Free Press Event:
The irony: the WHCD celebrates journalistic freedom, but journalists (Anderson Cooper, Jake Tapper, Rachel Maddow, etc.) have been aggressively attacked by Trump. He’s even revoked press credentials and influenced legal action against members of the media.
“The White House Correspondents’ event is an event that is to celebrate the free press... And yet journalists have also been incredibly attacked by Trump and his administration.” – Ana Navarro [16:07]
Manipulating Outrage and Legal Power:
Navarro recounts the DOJ pursuing indictments against former critics, e.g., James Comey, equating this to abuse of legal instruments to fit political goals.
“Now the Trump DOJ, Todd Blanche ... ran to a grand jury and got an indictment against Jim Comey.” – Ana Navarro [18:39]
[23:50 – 29:36]
Selective Outrage and Hypocrisy:
Navarro highlights Trump’s pattern of inciting rhetoric, then blaming opponents for polarization and violence.
“They do not look in the mirror. They never acknowledge that amongst everybody in America, Trump has the biggest bully pulpit and the biggest influence... And he never, ever reflects and regrets...” – Ana Navarro [21:35]
Explicit Examples of Incendiary Rhetoric:
Navarro gives a rundown of Trump’s violent language: against Liz Cheney, Mike Pence, Gretchen Whitmer, Marjorie Taylor Greene, federal judges, and more.
“In 2024... he said about Liz Cheney, ‘Let’s put her with a rifle, standing there with nine barrels shooting at her.’” – Ana Navarro [24:06]
Personal Account:
Ana recounts being listed as an “enemy” by a Trump supporter who sent pipe bombs, describing how presidential rhetoric endangers critics.
“The fact that Trump spoke against me... put me and so many others in that kind of danger. So, yes, yes, words matter but they matter most when coming from the leader of the free world.” – Ana Navarro [27:44]
No Accountability:
She concludes this topic by underscoring the administration’s refusal to self-examine or take internal responsibility for inflaming a culture of violence.
“They never once in their fucking lives want to look in the mirror and say, what have I done to contribute to this environment?” – Ana Navarro [29:20]
[34:36 – 39:20]
“He chose to stay home with his mother and with his family instead of traveling to the big lights, to the bright lights of the NFL draft. I thought that was just such a great thing.” – Ana Navarro [35:10]
“He did things like subtly, subtly acknowledge the Epstein victims... He spoke about checks and balances... offered praise to NATO after Trump has done nothing but trash NATO.” – Ana Navarro [36:50]
On gun violence fatigue:
“Think about the shock you felt the first time you heard about a school shooting... And think about how you feel now about school shootings... There is a level of normalcy that we have come to accept as a country.” – Ana Navarro [05:05]
On Trump's branding obsession:
“He’s like one of these dogs that needs to pee on every bush and every fire hydrant he sees.” – Ana Navarro [12:43]
On free speech threats:
“It sends a chilling message to people who want to speak up, that you will get canceled, that the weight of the White House will come down on trying to get you fired.” – Ana Navarro [15:28]
On selective outrage:
“Why is it that we are holding comedians? Why is it that we are holding regular Americans and commentators to a higher standard than the President of the United States?” – Ana Navarro [24:59]
On personal experience as a target:
“The fact that Trump spoke against me, the fact that Trump tweeted against me... put me and so many others in that kind of danger.” – Ana Navarro [27:44]
Ana Navarro maintains a tone of urgent critique, emotional honesty, and hope. She calls out hypocrisy, demands accountability from those in power, and uses personal stories to illustrate the stakes of unchecked rhetoric and selective outrage. Her “Heroes of the Week” segment offers a counterbalance—uplifting examples of humility, family, and international solidarity.
A resounding theme:
Fear thrives in silence and confusion. Ana seeks to break the silence, cut through chaos, and offer clarity, urging both listeners and leaders to look in the mirror and take responsibility.
