Andrew and Katie Leventis are longtime podcast listeners who reached out to pitch their coffee company, a specialty blend for a specific project with Quail Covey Coffee. After listening to our episode about Hunters For Hope, Quail Covey Coffee reach out about doing a special limited run of coffee to raise money for that exact program, complete with a QR code so that donors could raise even more money for the program. The heart of the hunting community around the world truly amazes me - hunters from South Carolina with a small coffee company wanting to raise funds for a Hunters for the Hungry program in Christ Church, New Zealand. It's absolutely incredible and makes all of our hearts sing. Listen to the podcast, then buy some coffee (it's really really good), then buy some for your friends, and when it arrives click the QR Code and send some funds to Hunters for Hope Program!

Thanks for your business. Andrew and Katie Leventis are just amazing people. They have been a long time podcast listener of ours and they reached out to me via Instagram DM with an idea. They said, hey, we're starting this coffee company called Quail Covey Coffee and the whole point of us starting this coffee company is to give back is to cover up for conservation. Specifically we had an initial conversation. The second conversation came on the back of listening to one of our podcasts called Hunters for Hope. Hunters for Hope is a program out of New Zealand, out of Christchurch, New Zealand with Steve and Adam in which they're taking venison and distributing it to the needy. Amazing Program has spoken to a lot of people's hearts and it spoke to Katie and Andrew's heart. And so they had reached out to me and they said, hey, we want to do a specific blend, a coffee blend and we're going to sell it and the proceeds are going to go to Hunters for Hope. There's going to be a QR code on the bag that people can donate more money to Hunters for Hope and we want the money to go specifically to this program that they listen to on our podcast. I said, geez, that's I was just blown away. So this podcast is a short podcast introducing you to Andrew and Katie and it's introducing you to this concept, the coffee and how you guys can get involved for us to reach the goal. We want to reach US$10,000 and send it to the Hunters for Hope program. So listen to the podcast, but most importantly, go buy yourself a couple of bags of coffee. It's amazing coffee. Actually, it's a light roast. It's, it's really good. I'm Drinking it right now. Quailcoveycoffee.com Go buy yourself a couple of bags, Listen to this podcast and help hunters for Hope in New Zealand. Enjoy. So there's a reason why I started Blood Origins, and that reason is simple, is that I wanted to convey the truth about hunting.
Andrew Leventis
It brings awareness to non hunters that it's more than just killing animals.
Katie Leventis
How do I start it? Brittany?
Andrew Leventis
My name.
Katie Leventis
Does my hair look okay?
Mike Axelrod
My name is Mike Axelrod. Start again. Yeah, I hated it too. Braxton, you said something in the car to me. You said that you were living on borrowed time. There's a perception around who hunters are, what we're supposed to be. And a feminist that works for a non profit, that is a hunter that has only eaten wild game for the last 20 years is likely not the thing that people think about when it comes to a hunter. Are you drinking any coffee this morning?
Andrew Leventis
Yes, sir, we are.
Mike Axelrod
I'm drinking coffee this morning from a whole bean that I ground this morning.
Andrew Leventis
Ooh, nice.
Mike Axelrod
From Quail Covey Coffee Company.
Andrew Leventis
Ha ha.
Mike Axelrod
There we go. Katie, Andrew, I. I'm not a big, light roast kind of guy. This is pretty good.
Katie Leventis
I'm glad that you like it.
Andrew Leventis
That's awesome.
Mike Axelrod
Super light, not bitter. Yeah. I'm a dark. As I told you, when we first started this thing, I was like, I'm a dark rose kind of guy. The darker the better. You're like, I don't know, man. Why don't we try something else? So, Andrew, Katie, welcome to the Blood Origins podcast. We're here for a very specific reason.
Andrew Leventis
Yes.
Mike Axelrod
Introduce yourself, and we can then tell everyone, like, what you do, who you are.
Andrew Leventis
No, no. Katie, would you like to go first?
Katie Leventis
I'll let you go first.
Andrew Leventis
You want me to go first? Okay. Yep. So I'm Andrew Levenis from South Carolina. Love hunting and fishing and the. The world of conservation. Uh, Christ is center in my life, and family is number two. And yeah, so we. I'm in the medical device world. So with cardiac electrophysiology, that's my day job. And yeah, we just roast coffee on the side. Roast coffee on the side. That's our. That's our. Our. Our third shift job, as we call it. Yeah. First shift is parents and husband and wife. Second shift is the day job, and then third shift is the coffee.
Mike Axelrod
Katie, do you have a second job or a second job? Curl coffee.
Katie Leventis
So I actually work in the medical device field as well. And obviously, you know, parenting, being a mom.
Mike Axelrod
Yeah.
Katie Leventis
And Andrew's better half. That's That's a full time job as well.
Mike Axelrod
Oh, I'd say that, yes. For sure.
Katie Leventis
Number two right there and then, you know, just roasting. Well, Andrew does most of the roasting of the coffee and then I help with the marketing and the website stuff.
Mike Axelrod
Yeah. So Quail Covey Coffee is a brand new coffee. It started 2024 and you decided to get into the coffee market because there wasn't any other people in the coffee market. That why you decided to get into it?
Andrew Leventis
There was enough people and.
Mike Axelrod
Okay, okay.
Andrew Leventis
There was, there was plenty of people. It just wasn't enough. They needed two more people to join. Join the, the, the coffee world.
Mike Axelrod
So the, the logo looks like, you know, almost looks like a shotgun shell. Right? It looks like a little 20 gauge or 12 gauge. With the 20 and the 24 next to it. It's got a bunch of quail in the middle, obviously. South Carolina. Are you just a big upland bird kind of family or.
Andrew Leventis
We, we do. We. Yes, we. We love to hunt birds. We've got a great bird dog. He's a Deutar, then Grouse, a German wire haired pointer that Katie and I have had for the last 10 years. And he's taken us on some awesome adventures, whether it's chasing Bob White quail, woodcock and the Chinese privet or, or ducks in Arkansas. He's, he's, he's been a love of ours for quite some time and he's 10. He's 10.
Mike Axelrod
Have you got the new one on the way already?
Andrew Leventis
I've been working on her. She's, she's. I, I snuck, I snuck a grouse in. I snuck grouse in. She didn't know I was on a list for over a year and a buddy of mine blew it in the kitchen one night when we were cooking right after we'd gotten married.
Katie Leventis
He's like, are you excited about the new dog you're getting? I was like, what dog? He just turned around and he walked out. He's like, I'm gonna go outside.
Mike Axelrod
Oh my gosh.
Katie Leventis
But then we picked him up and you know, he's been the best family dog and hunting dog. So we're probably gonna have to get another one.
Mike Axelrod
How old are the kids?
Andrew Leventis
So our son just turned seven last Friday on the 11th, and then our daughter turned three March 29th.
Mike Axelrod
Okay. Okay. We're a little bit further along in life than you. Not with the dog age, though. We did have one pass ready, but we got 13 and 11 and we've got two dogs. We got Ro who's a Britney Boykin mix.
Andrew Leventis
Okay.
Mike Axelrod
He's a 69 pound monster and he's supposed to be a 35 pound Boykin. And I was like, oh, somebody's breeding a Brittany into him. Oh, that'd be awesome. Upland and dude's got like the, the tuft of the, you know the, the Brittany here. He's got the, the not. Not the muzzle of the. Of a Brittany. Loves water and. But he's a tank.
Andrew Leventis
I bet. I mean £69. That's a big, that's a big boy. Can a mix.
Mike Axelrod
Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's a big boy. And then we have, we just got Lucy. I think she's a year and a half now. Two years. Lucy is a snoopy colored mini weiner dog.
Andrew Leventis
Okay. Yeah.
Mike Axelrod
And I was not a big fan of small dogs and now I am like obsessed. She is awesome. Look guys, I'm a hunter, right? Andrew Leventis
I think that she probably agree with that. Yeah, I think that she'd probably agree with that.
Mike Axelrod
So, so why did you decide? Like you, you've. You've got these, you've got great jobs, you obviously love the outdoors and you know, you could, you could do all that. You don't need to start a coffee company.
Andrew Leventis
No, no, you're right. Do you want to answer? You want me to answer? Okay, I don't want to be the one that talks all the time, but. No, Katie and I have been bouncing around some ideas on ways that we could give back to our community the things that we love. And honestly though, we both love coffee. And this idea just kind of, just kind of came about by complete accident. We, Katie, in the past had looked into maybe opening up just a coffee shop. And so we kind of revisited that idea and decided that maybe roasting would be the path that we'd want to take to kind of create a vehicle to help support really the three pillars of our life, which is Christ, family, and then conservation. And. And so that's what we're really trying to build. We're trying to build a platform that can maybe one day be bigger than ourselves and really support the things that we love. And we're. I mean, yeah, we're really excited about. That's really kind of why it all happened. You're right. We've got our day jobs that keep us very busy. Keep us very busy. And we love. And then obviously we have our family that we travel around with and hunt with and stuff. But we wanted to kind of branch out and do something a little bit different. And this is kind of where we landed. It was with coffee.
Mike Axelrod
She.
Katie Leventis
That we can do on the side too. You know, incorporating our kids, even though they're only three and seven, they love it. They, you know, have so much fun just, you know, running around talking about the coffee and. And we get to bring them along. You know, we want to engage them so that they can have something to build like their foundation on. Right. Centered around Christ. And then family is important, so something we can do with us together and then conservation. Because, you know, I love upland hunting. I'm not very quiet. I can't, you know, sit still in a. In a blind and turkey hunt with Andrew. But I'll go, you know, shoot some birds with a. Many days.
Mike Axelrod
So obviously we were talking about a conservation pillar, and we're. I'm. I'm going to get the story from here shortly. But have you done anything in the conservation space with your coffee?
Andrew Leventis
With our coffee, yeah. So that. That's what we're kind of. We're kind of building that out. So we're trying to create. We're. We're building out our. Our client base. We've got some local folks that we're hoping to start moving donations to as we continue to build our client base or customer base. Um, so we were going to. I'm kind of working on something with the South Carolina Bobwhite initiative in. In South Carolina and talking with those guys. There's some things that they've got to figure out on how to really accept the donations just the way that that initiative is. Is designed. But we're. We're slowly kind of just branching out and trying to build out our force.
Katie Leventis
And to finding something that, you know, aligns with our values and, you know, our mission of, like, what we want to do, you know, helping people. And, you know, whenever Andrew is listening to your podcast, one day I get a. A text from.
Mike Axelrod
Speaks to your heart, right? You got something needs to speak to your heart to, like, get you excited.
Katie Leventis
Yeah. And he sends me a text message. He's like, you've got to listen to this podcast. And I'm like, okay, all right. You know, he sends me stuff all the time. Sometimes I listen, sometimes I don't. But listen to your podcast. And I understood why he was so excited about.
Mike Axelrod
So what podcast did you listen to, Katie?
Katie Leventis
The Hunters for Hope.
Mike Axelrod
Hunters for Hope? Hunters for Hope is a program in New Zealand. We had two guys on. I speak to too many people, but Adam is one of the guys. Name. I can't remember the other guy's name. Steve. Yep, Steve and Adam. And two guys just, you know, taking upon themselves. They're like, look, we see an opportunity, we see a need. They're surrounded by a lot of hunting operations. Specifically, you know, there's some high fence operations in New Zealand that generates a lot of meat. And they're like, man, how do we get this meat that more often than not it's going to get wasted? How do we get them into places that need it, that have need? And obviously Christchurch, where they're based, has a lot of need, has. Has a bunch of food pantries and whatnot. And so they started, and I got a whisper of them like 18 months ago. I heard about them. Then they started getting a little bit more traction. They got a little bit of money, they got a couple more people to donate venison. And then again, I just, I got word of them again, and I was like, man, okay, let's. Let's talk to these guys. This is the kind of stuff that we love, right? It's the kind of stuff that shows our heart, shows what the hunter community can do, what they're investing in and whatnot. And so I did the podcast and at the end of the podcast, you guys don't know and I don't, you know, before you actually reached out to me, I said to them offline, I said, man, what do you guys need this year? They're like, man, we need, you know, about 15,000 New Zealand dollars to help with logistics and maintenance and, you know, freezes and whatnot. So I said, okay, cool, we're going to do it. Which is equip equivalents to about US$10,000. And I was like, all Right, we'll do this. And I didn't put. It wasn't on the podcast. We didn't put it out there. I just talked them separately offline. And then obviously, you two listen to the podcast. And, Andrew, you DM'd me. And it wasn't like a flirtatious, you know, picture that you sent me. Typically. Okay. Oh, sorry, Katie. Oh, I was. I'm sorry, Andrew. I didn't mean to, like, you know, but he just said, hey, I've got an idea. Can we chat? And I was like, oh, yeah, let's. Let's have a conversation. And. And you can imagine how many of those kinds of DMS I get. We get a lot of people just, like, asking, hey, we should do this, or, hey, we should do that. And. And it's, you know, again, it's like a. A Godwin kind of thing. Right? You just, like, sometimes it's like, it feels right, and you're just like, yeah, yeah, okay, cool. Let's have a conversation. And. And that's from my perspective where I started. You. You pick up the story from there.
Andrew Leventis
Yeah. So, I mean, I've been listening to you for, I guess, two, three years maybe. I don't know. It was pretty early. Have you been doing this now for about three years, maybe?
Mike Axelrod
The podcast, for sure.
Andrew Leventis
Yeah, yeah, the podcast, yeah. Because I started listening to you early on. I drive a lot with my job, and so when I did listen to that podcast, it got me fired up and kind of stirred my soul. And so when we started the conversation, we. We both got really excited. And then, especially when we found out that you were going to be at Dallas Safari Club in Atlanta, which is right down the road, it really made things kind of feel more real. And so it was wonderful meeting you in person there. But, yeah, no, that's exactly, you know, what we were looking for is to support an organization. Nothing huge, just a small grassroots organization, which is exactly what we are. We're just a small, little coffee. Little boutique coffee company that's just wanting to give back. And it was perfect. And that's kind of where the wheel started spinning for us. And, you know, how could we contribute? And so, yeah, that's kind of what kind of what started for us and was kind of going behind the scenes in our world.
Mike Axelrod
So what have we created?
Andrew Leventis
Well, we've got this blend specific to Blood Origins and Hunters for Hunter. I guess we need to grab a bag.
Mike Axelrod
Yeah, I got one right here.
Andrew Leventis
Oh, you got. There it is.
Mike Axelrod
I'm telling you, man, I think the Best thing in the world is smelling coffee through the two little ports that they give you in this little round hole. I don't think there's anything better in.
Katie Leventis
This world, especially when it's a good coffee.
Andrew Leventis
That's right.
Mike Axelrod
Okay, so what kind of coffee do we have? So this is. Before we go on. This is a Hunters for Hope Blood Origins blend. I just checked on your website. It is available. So I'm not. We're not going to drop this podcast and be like, oh, where can we get the coffee? It's like, oh, it's not available yet. No, it's available. It's on the website. Quailcovey Coffee.com, i think, is the website. Yep. Wellcovery Coffee.com smells amazing. You can get a whole bean and ground right online. I ground my own beans this morning to make this coffee that I'm drinking. And so remind me, the original conversation, I was like, oh, let's do. You know, we did a dark roast in. In Australia, and obviously you didn't listen to me and made something better. So. You did.
Andrew Leventis
Yeah, because. So if we rewind back before that podcast, I'd reached out to you and you were on your way across. You're driving across country or something to an event. I think you're in the car and you. You told me then you're like, I'm a dark roast guy. I'm a dark roast guy. Okay. Okay. Yeah, we'll do whatever you want.
Mike Axelrod
Yeah. See how that. Well, that worked out.
Andrew Leventis
Yeah. But we decided to flip it up on you.
Mike Axelrod
All right, so what do we have? What's the bean in here?
Andrew Leventis
Yeah, so it's a. It's two beans, it's being from Guatemala and a bean from Indonesia. And so we have a roasting process where we roast those together. It's not necessarily the traditional way of doing it. A lot of folks will roast beans separately and then create their blends. We. We kind of just changed it a little bit where we roast them together so their profiles kind of. They change at the same temps and stuff, but they create different flavor profiles, but all within the same roast. So we. We have a. It's essentially a portion of Guatemalan bean and a portion of an Indonesian bean.
Mike Axelrod
Okay.
Andrew Leventis
Yeah.
Mike Axelrod
Have you used this blend before? Have you put it together before?
Andrew Leventis
No, this is specific to Blood Origins. We.
Mike Axelrod
We.
Andrew Leventis
We played around with some stuff and.
Katie Leventis
And tried a bunch of, you know, some different combinations and gave it to friends to test, and this was the kind of the winner.
Mike Axelrod
Nice.
Andrew Leventis
Yeah, nice.
Mike Axelrod
So we think it's about 50. 50 is what it comes out to.
Andrew Leventis
In terms of the beans. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's about a 50, 50 bean to bean ratio. Yeah.
Mike Axelrod
Okay, awesome. So there. But there's a specific. So you built this coffee. The bag. On the bag. I'll show everyone. It says Hunters for Hope. That's on the bag. So the bag is specific to this project, to the New Zealand project?
Andrew Leventis
Correct.
Mike Axelrod
Yep. So Hunting for Hope is a program that captures the true heart of hunting and hunters. Hunting provides hope to many facets of society today, including wildlife conservation, habitat protection and community benefits. Blood Origins and Quail Covey Coffee invites you to cover you up for a cause by helping to feed the hungry through Hunters for Hope. And then there is a. To give more and feed more. Scan here. QR code.
Andrew Leventis
Yeah, that's it.
Mike Axelrod
Katie, you're going to say something.
Katie Leventis
So, you know, with the bags, obviously the blend and the bag is specific to raising money for Hunters for Hope. So a portion of every bag is going to go directly back to the organization and we're hoping to hit your target or come close to it of what the guys need to continue their mission down there in New Zealand.
Mike Axelrod
That is amazing. I'm going to. Whilst I'm talking to you, I'm going to pull up Classy, because clearly you've sold some of this coffee already.
Andrew Leventis
Yes.
Mike Axelrod
Okay. And the reason I know that is because we got a donation. Ah. Somebody clicked the QR code.
Andrew Leventis
That's awesome.
Mike Axelrod
And if I can find it, I hope they're okay with it. I may just say their name, but let's have a look.
Andrew Leventis
That gave me goosebumps.
Mike Axelrod
That's awesome. Yeah. 25 bucks.
Andrew Leventis
That's awesome.
Mike Axelrod
Yeah. Somebody sent 25 bucks. And I'm going to say her name because it's pretty awesome. Shelly Savard. Yeah. So Shelly sent 25 bucks, so thank you so much, Shelley. And we're off to the races, so. Yeah. So, okay, so this coffee is available. It's available now. It'll be available until we hit the goal and then we build another coffee with cheetahs.
Andrew Leventis
That'd be awesome. For cheetahs. Yes.
Katie Leventis
Only if Andrew gets to come along on the mission.
Mike Axelrod
Well, Andrew needs to do, like, a video in a cheetah costume selling coffee and then we may, you know, rank it. Oh, if he gets a. If he gets a good enough YouTube following. Oh, yeah, we can. We can send him to do some cheetahs.
Andrew Leventis
I like. I like it. I could probably do that.
Katie Leventis
Robbie, don't put it past him. You know he'll dress up.
Mike Axelrod
However, is there anything else that you want? Let's sell people about Quail cover coffee. Obviously go to the website quailcovycoffee.com buy our blend. You know you've got a couple of other blends on there, right?
Andrew Leventis
That's right. Yeah, we sure do. Yeah. We've got three other blends. We've got Gentleman Bob, which is our, our breakfast blend. We, we've got our, our On Point which is our, our medium rose house blend. And then we have Old Rugged which is our French roast, our dark roast blend. And obviously Gentleman Bob is named after the Bob White quail. And then On Point is for all those wonderful pointers that do so much hard work for us out in the field to find those little rascals. And then Old Rugged is really for the old rugged cross, which is kind of neat that we're doing this podcast today on Good Friday and which is really special to all, all those that are believers. But, but yeah, going back to again, why, why we did this. We know that there's tons of coffee companies out there and there's a lot of great coffee companies and, and we're not trying to go in and take anybody's market or anything like that. We just want to give people a place where they can land, where they know that every sip of coffee that they, they, they drink with us is supporting folks that have like minded values. And we're trying to encourage people to covey up. I mean that's a part of our, our mantra is the, you know, covey up for Christ, covey up for family, covey up for conservation. And the importance of that covey is as you know, with Bob White, quail is the key to survival. And that, and that goes to any community is encouraging those that have like minded who are going to, you know, come together to support the greater good.
Mike Axelrod
No, that's certainly what you guys have done, man. You're certainly living up to the mantra. You're certainly living up to that concept. I love the concept. I love when things sort of all little pieces of, of everything have a purpose or have a meaning or they all tie into a central brand and central theme and whatnot. So yeah, man, I appreciate you. I really, really do. I appreciate the opportunity for the coffee. Hopefully everyone goes out and buys a bag or two. Whether you're a coffee drinker or you're not a coffee drinker, just buy a bag or two. The money's going to go to the spot. Amazing program Hunter for hope in New Zealand. I think they're going to be absolutely stoked because they don't know this is happening.
Andrew Leventis
Oh, they don't. That's awesome.
Mike Axelrod
Oh, no, no, that is great. No, that is. They'll know when we drop this podcast and we drop the. The Instagram post and all that kind of stuff around it, so.
Andrew Leventis
Well, I hope to one day go over to New Zealand and do some hunting. Katie and I both. Because, again, Katie does hunt, and. And it would be cool to go meet those guys. That would be a heck of a story there.
Mike Axelrod
Oh, yeah, you need to. You absolutely need to. You know you would. And New Zealand is just a hunting mecca. Yeah. So much to hunt. So many different ways to hunt it. Yeah. Not much upland. Not much upland birds, unfortunately. There's some turkeys. Oh, there's lots of turkeys.
Katie Leventis
You got to be real quiet for those, too.
Andrew Leventis
Gobble, gobble, gobble.
Mike Axelrod
Uh, New Zealand turkeys are a little different. They're considered pests and vermin. Like, I was talking to my New Zealand. A couple of New Zealand friends and telling them how I. I'm, like, addicted to turkey hunting. And I spent three days, and we chased this one bird, and he fooled us for, like, three days. And they're like, you killed one bird? And I was like, yeah, yeah. That's, like, all I was. All I can do. And they're like, okay, hold on, hold on. And they showed me a picture and a video of them killing 40 in a morning. What's that? I was like, what the hell? Like, yeah, we shot them off the fence post. We shot them off the. The tree line. You know, it was just like, they're just booming everywhere. So what?
Andrew Leventis
That's awesome.
Mike Axelrod
What else? Peacocks. There's also peacocks.
Andrew Leventis
Man, that's. That's exotic.
Mike Axelrod
There's. Everything is just very invasive and feral, and they don't like them. Yeah. But, yeah, you need to go down there. You'll have a great time, have a great hunt. And then, you know, if you meet.
Andrew Leventis
Steve and Adam, I see that nice Springbok Mountain you got behind it. That's got. That's a nice one. Got the curls going back. That's a really pretty one.
Mike Axelrod

Andrew Leventis

Andrew Leventis

Mike Axelrod
A big bush buck from my grandfather. So those are the things. And there's. I got a little diker on the wall here.
Andrew Leventis

Mike Axelrod

Mike Axelrod
I'm in a little attic and this is where they belong in my house, well, he.
Katie Leventis
He won't be going by himself next time because I'm coming along on the next trip. But since. Since he was able to go hunting in Africa, that meant that I had to redo, you know, my living room and our. Our bedroom for, you know, some different mounts.
Mike Axelrod
And did that happen during the trip?
Andrew Leventis
What was that?
Mike Axelrod
Because this is. That happened during the trip. Because this is what happens in my house this week. This trip I was just on. I was gone for two. Two weeks and two days or something like that at, like, day 11. Typically on these trips, I'll typically get, like, sent, oh, hey, there's this house for sale down the road. Or, oh, hey, I think we should go to Disney. Like, you know, this. The, you know, the. The kids are getting out of school. It's going to be the last year. Like, and it's almost just like, you know, what hotel are we staying in?
Andrew Leventis
Yeah, that's right.
Mike Axelrod
You can't say, no, no, no, no, no. It's making everyone happy. In.
Andrew Leventis
You're like, you'll like this. This is her little decor. This is what she did with it.
Mike Axelrod

Blood Origins Podcast Summary
Episode: 562 - Quail Covey Coffee || Hunters for Hope Coffee!
Release Date: May 27, 2025
Host: Blood Origins Inc.
Guests: Andrew and Katie Leventis, founders of Quail Covey Coffee
In Episode 562 of the Blood Origins podcast, host Mike Axelrod welcomes Andrew and Katie Leventis, the dynamic duo behind Quail Covey Coffee. Both Andrew and Katie are long-time listeners of the podcast and have a deep passion for hunting, conservation, and community service. Their journey into the coffee business is driven by a desire to give back and support meaningful conservation efforts.
Andrew and Katie share their inspiration for starting Quail Covey Coffee, highlighting their commitment to the three pillars of their life: Christ, family, and conservation.
Andrew Leventis explains, “We wanted to create a platform that can maybe one day be bigger than ourselves and really support the things that we love” (05:18).
Initially considering opening a coffee shop, they pivoted to roasting coffee as a means to support their conservation goals. Their venture is not just a business but a mission to intertwine their love for coffee with their dedication to conservation.
A significant portion of the episode centers around Andrew and Katie's partnership with Hunters for Hope, a conservation program based in Christchurch, New Zealand. Hunters for Hope focuses on repurposing venison from high-fence hunting operations to feed those in need.
Katie Leventis emphasizes the impact of this partnership: “A portion of every bag is going to go directly back to the organization and we're hoping to hit our target of US$10,000 to help with their mission” (24:43).
This collaboration not only supports food distribution but also raises awareness about sustainable hunting practices and their role in conservation.
The Leventis couple developed a unique coffee blend specifically for this cause. They meticulously crafted the blend by roasting Guatemalan and Indonesian beans together, resulting in a harmonious flavor profile that appeals to a wide range of coffee enthusiasts.
Andrew Leventis describes the blend-building process: “We roast them together so their profiles kind of change at the same temps and stuff, but they create different flavor profiles within the same roast” (23:27).
The resulting blend is balanced and versatile, catering even to those who typically prefer darker roasts, as evidenced by Mike Axelrod's appreciation of the light roast they created for him: “I'm a dark roast guy... but this is pretty good” (04:23).
Since launching the Hunters for Hope blend, Quail Covey Coffee has already made a positive impact. Listeners and supporters have begun purchasing bags, contributing directly to the conservation efforts in New Zealand. A notable donation was made by listener Shelly Savard, who contributed $25 through the provided QR code, showcasing the community's eagerness to support the cause.
Andrew Leventis expresses gratitude: “That gave me goosebumps” (25:40), highlighting the emotional and tangible support received from the community.
The Leventis couple aims to reach their initial fundraising goal of US$10,000 to sustain the Hunters for Hope program. Upon reaching this milestone, they plan to introduce new blends supporting other conservation efforts, such as a future project dedicated to cheetah conservation.
Katie Leventis shares their vision: “It's amazing coffee... we're hoping to hit your target or come close to it” (25:04).
Their goal is not only to fundraise but also to inspire others within the hunting and conservation communities to engage in meaningful projects that benefit society and the environment.
Throughout the episode, Andrew and Katie share personal anecdotes about their hunting experiences, their family life, and how their passion for the outdoors shapes their daily endeavors. They discuss their beloved dog, a German Wirehaired Pointer named Deutar, who accompanies them on numerous hunting adventures. These stories humanize the hosts and highlight the deep connection between hunting, family, and conservation.
Andrew Leventis reminisces, “We've got a great bird dog. He's been a love of ours for quite some time” (07:00), illustrating the integral role their dog plays in their hunting and conservation missions.
As the episode wraps up, Mike Axelrod urges listeners to support Quail Covey Coffee by purchasing bags of the Hunters for Hope blend. He emphasizes the dual benefit of enjoying excellent coffee while contributing to a noble cause.
Mike Axelrod concludes, “Go get yourself a bag, scan the QR code, send a couple of bucks more to Hunters for Hope” (33:43).
Andrew and Katie echo this sentiment, encouraging the community to join them in their mission to make a positive impact through thoughtful consumer choices.
