Sam Foreign welcome back to B9 the Power of One. We are back. Finally. Been a little bit of inconsistency here, but back with your show. Topics, questions, etc submitted at BNI Power of One. Today's question comes from Joseph. He's in Massachusetts. He says name badges a lost art. I visit BNI chapters in which not a single person is wearing a name badge. How important is it? Personally, I think it's very important. Shows professional, professionalism looks sharp and wearing one is for the visitor and their experience. Yes. Or am I old fashioned? And the answer to this is they are very important. And unfortunately, I've also seen what you're seeing. Even a chapter I recently visited a couple weeks ago, it was the first thing I pointed out to the leadership team. I said, nobody here is wearing a name badge, not one. And it could seem kind of trivial. It's like, what's the big deal? It's a little name badge. But it does play an important role in the experience visitors have and members have. It's a, it's a tone setter. Right? If I walk into a chapter meeting and I see nobody is wearing a name badge, to me, I can immediately get the sense that there's a cultural issue here. There's an issue of complacency, there's an issue of, it's not so much laziness, but just, you know, we're kind of going through the motions. We're not really paying attention to the details. If you're not paying attention to that detail, you're probably not paying attention to a lot of other details that are going on. So what does a name badge really do? Well, number one, it highlights who is a member. And you should have pride in the fact that you are a member of that chapter. And for visitors, it shows that members have pride in being a part of it and that they're not there yet. They're not a member. Right. So you got a nice professionally made name badge. Hopefully by now most regions it stands out. Number two, it does again, show professionalism that everybody's taking that meeting seriously, which again, from a visitor standpoint, is, is important. It sets a kind of a tone for the meeting, but also for your current members as well. And remember, I, I've said this on numerous podcasts. Bni, again, very much a monkey see monkey duo organization. So if you know, I'm a new member, I'm a visitor, I decided to join this chapter. Nobody's wearing name badges. I get my new member kit, it's got a name badge in It. How likely am I to wear it if nobody else is wearing it? I'm not going to wear it. I don't want to be the one who stands out by wearing the name badge that all these season members who were here before me don' Wear. And so it becomes this perpetually growing problem, if you will, versus hey, every member wears their name badge. I can't wait to get my name badge. How do I know I get, you know, how do I get my name badge? Oh, it comes in your new member kit or however your regions are getting them to them and now they're excited to wear it. I think it also helps for visitors. They don't know who you are. Right. The complacency part is, yeah, we all know each other. I know Bob over there, I know Sally over there, I know Nicole over there, whoever. But your visitors don't. And so it is a nice touch to have the badge. I know in ours, it's got the name, their company name on it. It's got some information like how long have they been a member on there, maybe some other recognition like gold club, those kind of things. Leadership team titles. Were they a chapter member of the year at some point like those. All that recognition, which is a core value, is right there on their badge. And so it again helps with visitors. They don't know who you are. They can see your badge for introductions, etc. So it's not a lost art. It's still part of the program. It is trained. It's part of the operations manual. Every new member again in my regions gets one sent to them in their new member kit. We wouldn't be spending the money to do that if it wasn't a big deal. So I think it really is a big, big piece of it. And I don't think you're old fashioned at all. I think you're pinpointing exactly an issue that you might be seeing. I'm curious if it's a lot of chapters that that's the case. I would speak culturally to a regional thing or if one off. And again, no region has, you know, everything running exactly perfect. I went to a chapter in my right near our office and this was very much the case, but I believe in it so much that I immediately talked about it and the importance of wearing them. The importance of, you know, again might seem trivial to you, but they have a meaning. They have a purpose. Wear the name badge. Now, another question too is where do you wear the name badge? You want it, you know, somewhere visible. You want it where somebody can read it without being inappropriate. And typically you want it on the side that you would shake hands with. So you want the badge on the same side as your right hand if you're going to shake, shake hands, because then it's kind of leaning in towards it. But anyways, you want to visit, you don't want to. I've seen people put it on a lanyard, put it under their coat. So it's like, yeah, my badge, but it's hidden. I've seen people clip it to their belts, which is just highly inappropriate, you know, just to say that they have it. You want to pay attention to all of those details. And I hope your region, I'm not sure, Joseph, if your region does recognition or not on there. I know a lot of regions are now, and I like that a lot as well. And so it gives that people, you know, everybody's got a little tweak to their badge, if you will, based on, again, leadership team roles or chapter member of the year roles or all those kind of things right there on the badge. It can help with that piece as well. Every little detail adds up to create the overall experience. And it's the experience that dictates whether somebody decides to join your chapter or not, stay in your chapter or not. And yes, the badge is one detail, but it's such a simple, easy one that you can put in the right column to help people make the best decision to join your chapter and or stay in your chapter. It might seem trivial, but again, you forget that one, you forget the next little detail and the next little detail and the next little detail. And suddenly, besides the agenda, we don't really look like a BNI chapter. We're not really acting like a BNI chapter. And that is going to be less effective for you. It's going to be less effective for the visitors. And it is damaging a brand across the entire region. So absolutely great question. Simple but important. So, Joseph, thank you for listening. Thank you for submitting and for everybody else, you can do the same. Go to bnipowerofone.com Leave your question there, your topic, and we'll make sure to get to it. Have a great day.

In episode 828 of "BNI & The Power of One," host Tim Roberts addresses a thought-provoking question submitted by Joseph from Massachusetts: "Name badges a lost art. I visit BNI chapters in which not a single person is wearing a name badge. How important is it? Personally, I think it's very important. Shows professionalism, looks sharp and wearing one is for the visitor and their experience. Yes. Or am I old-fashioned?" (00:00)
Tim Roberts acknowledges the concern and affirms the significance of name badges within BNI chapters, setting the stage for an in-depth discussion on their importance.
Roberts emphasizes that name badges are far from obsolete; rather, they are integral to maintaining professionalism and enhancing the overall meeting experience.
"They are very important," says Roberts (00:30). He recounts visiting a chapter where no members wore name badges, highlighting that such oversight can signal deeper cultural issues within the group.
Roberts explains that neglecting name badges may indicate complacency or a lack of attention to detail, which can adversely affect the chapter's dynamics and effectiveness.
Name badges play a pivotal role in creating a welcoming and professional environment for visitors. Roberts outlines several key functions of name badges:
Identification and Pride: Name badges help members identify each other and foster a sense of pride in belonging to the chapter.
Professionalism: Wearing name badges conveys that members take meetings seriously, enhancing the chapter's credibility in the eyes of visitors.
Setting the Tone: Consistent use of name badges sets a standard for new and existing members, promoting a culture of professionalism and attention to detail.
"If you walk into a chapter meeting and see nobody is wearing a name badge... there's a cultural issue here," Roberts explains (03:05).
This emphasis on professionalism through name badges directly influences a visitor's perception and their decision to join or remain in the chapter.
Roberts highlights the "monkey see, monkey do" nature of BNI culture. If new members observe that established members are not wearing name badges, they are less likely to adopt the practice themselves.
"If no one else is wearing it, I'm not going to wear it," Roberts notes (04:20).
This behavior perpetuates the decline in name badge usage, undermining the chapter's efforts to maintain a professional and cohesive appearance.
To maximize the effectiveness of name badges, Roberts recommends the following best practices:
Visibility: Name badges should be worn in a place that is easily visible, typically on the side of the right hand for straightforward identification during handshakes.
Avoid Concealment: Members should refrain from hiding their name badges on lanyards under coats or clipping them to belts, as this diminishes their purpose.
Detailed Information: Incorporate essential details such as the member's name, company, duration of membership, and any recognitions or leadership roles. This not only aids identification but also adds a layer of professional acknowledgment.
"Every little detail adds up to create the overall experience," Roberts emphasizes (06:20).
Implementing these practices ensures that name badges effectively contribute to both member identification and the professional atmosphere of the chapter.
Roberts acknowledges that the adoption of name badges may vary across different regions and chapters within BNI. He suggests that inconsistencies could stem from cultural differences or regional leadership dynamics.
"I would speak culturally to a regional thing or if one off," Roberts observes (05:10).
To combat this, he urges regional leaders to reinforce the importance of name badges consistently, ensuring that all chapters uphold the standard regardless of local variations. This uniformity is crucial for maintaining the BNI brand and ensuring a positive experience for all members and visitors.
Tim Roberts concludes the episode by reaffirming that name badges remain a vital component of BNI's success strategy. Despite appearing minor, they significantly impact professionalism, member morale, and visitor impressions.
"It might seem trivial, but again, you forget that one, you forget the next little detail..." Roberts concludes (07:00).
He urges chapters to prioritize the use of name badges as a simple yet powerful tool to enhance the effectiveness and reputation of their networking efforts. By doing so, chapters can ensure a cohesive, professional environment that attracts and retains members, ultimately contributing to the overall strength and success of BNI.
