BNI Power of One Host (0:55)
Foreign. Welcome back BNI Power of One. Hope you have an amazing morning already. Good start to the week. We're back with your show. Submissions topics submitted at bnipower of1.com I'm going to leave this one anonymous just because of the state of the question. I don't want to, you know, out anybody for lack of a better term. It's from Florida and it's a unique question. I don't know that maybe we have I am not good at remembering every episode. I haven't like Dr. Meiser does so well, maybe we've talked about this, but my guess is maybe we haven't because when I read it I was like, I think that's the first time we've been asked this question which is how do I leave my chapter now? For more context, I love this is all from the submission by the way. Starts with how do I leave my chapter for more context. I love my BNI chapter and the experience that I've had. I'll be moving to another state in about a year. I'll be joining the local chapter where I'm moving. My main need for advice is how do I leave my current chapter for the transition. My membership renews in the fall and I will not be moving until this spring. What are your recommendations? So that's a great question and one I want to highlight shows again that, you know, life happens. This is why your chapter will not have 100% retention. But even when we are moving because of BNI's effectiveness and its global scale, we are able to do this where we move in states. But I'm going to join a local chapter and it's probably the best thing you can do when you are moving into a new area, right? So it does provide that opportunity. So let's start with the actual steps to it are very easy. But let's start with the deeper things which is how do you leave your chapter in a really good standing, right? What a lot of people will do is when they know this is happening is they start mentally checking out. I'll hang in there until the fall. I won't renew because I'm not moving till the spring. And then once you've made that decision, your one to one starts staggering, your activity starts staggering. Because you know, do you really need a ton of referral? I don't know your business but like this is just in general though, I don't really need referrals because I'm moving and blah blah, blah. And they lose sight of the fact that you still have an amazing opportunity to make an impact on the fellow members. And so don't let your activity wane. Keep doing what you're doing and maybe even amplify it depending on where you are in your activity level to try to give as much as you can in this time period. Because these relationships can carry on. You don't know the value they'll continue to provide and you don't want to just end it because you are moving. Right? So I would be wanting to leave and my goal would be that people are like super sad that I'm leaving because of the impact I've been making on the chapter on my fellow members. So my first piece of advice is don't slow down, maybe even speed up your activity. If other parts of your business are slowing down because you're moving, speed up and do more one to ones. Try to make as many impacts as you can before you leave. Also in the making an impact for your fellow members, a lasting impact is spend some time thinking about who can replace you that would be the best fit for your team. Is there somebody in your industry? Is there somebody in your business? Is there somebody that you know that can't join your chapter right now because you're there, that you can make an impact on the chapter and them by bringing them in and transitioning the seat over to them before you move, right. So that you're not just leaving the chapter, you're replacing yourself. And that again makes an impact on all your fellow members. They didn't lose somebody, they didn't lose a piece of their network. They've gained new opportunities, they've gained a new relationship and you're making an impact on the person you're bringing in who again is currently locked out because you're in there now, that could also be somebody. It's not in your profession. Maybe if you, if you don't have anybody or you're having a hard time thinking about somebody. I would be trying to replace myself between now and the fall. Okay, so. And this question is relatively newer, so I put it up because it was just such a unique question. So I'd be spending the Couple months keeping up my activity and trying to replace myself. Now, how does the transition work? My advice to you would be to renew your membership when your renewal comes up. Okay, so you said my renewal is in the fall, I'm not moving to the spring. Okay, so you got a lot. So you got like a year of activity and time to be replacing yourself and all that. I would renew in the fall and the reason I would renew in the fall is twofold. One, to be able to keep up that activity, obviously. But two is because you will lock in whatever your current rate is at. The pricing structure in BNI regions in the United States is different region to region. I have no idea what the pricing is, where you're moving, or if it's high or low or whatever. But if you renew, you can renew for, you know, one, two, maybe five years depending on the region. Like in our regions we do 1, 2 and 5 and lock in your current rate for a period of time. When you leave, you will be assigned basically a certificate, quote, unquote, certificate of credit in BNI Connect. So whatever time is remaining when you do leave, the chapter is locked in. And so again, it might be beneficial to do two year renewal, whatever. And that time now is in your profile and it stays there for two years. You have two years to use it and you can use it anywhere you go. So it can be any other state, any other region, it could be international and now you can apply with that time. And maybe the dues are higher where you're going and so you locked in a lower rate. Maybe the dues are going to be adjusting where you're going and you've locked in your rate. And again, really strategically is you don't have to pay the application fee. So you can come in, use that certificate of credit and avoid the application fee in the in, which saves you whatever. And that's different in each region. So if you drop or you just let your time run out and then you move three, four, five months later, you're a brand new member, its application fee, full dues, etc. The certificate of credit will save you from some of that. So, but that's, that's the easy, you know, steps to take mechanically. What's the challenging part is remaining engaged, remaining focused for the next year. Because once you know you're leaving, that's very, very easy to kind of start disengaging. Keep up your activity, try to make as many impacts as you can while you're in that chapter. And the biggest way you're going to make an impact at the end would be to strategically replace yourself in the chapter for your fellow members. Because now you're leaving that legacy. And you didn't, you didn't just up and go. The worst thing you can do is just kind of go through the motions for the next, let's just call it five months, whatever is left, and it follows a long time. So I don't know when you're renewing, but let's just say it's five months from now because you've got the five months and so I'm just going to use the time. But you're not really engaged. You're not, you're not fully present with the chapter. You're just kind of using your time and thus just kind of holding a seat. That isn't effective for anybody. You, your fellow members, the chapter as a whole, etc. That I've seen happen. And that's the worst part. You don't want that to happen. So it's a really good question. Again, might be the first of its kind. I don't know. Somebody will probably know that better than I do, but could be. But it the fact that you're asking, I believe your, your head's in absolutely the right space and you will do exactly what you need to do to leave that impact. So thank you for submitting it as always and for anybody else. Again, if you have questions, topics, etc, go to BNI Power of one. Leave it there. If you're finding value, leave a review, leave a comment, share it. All the things and I appreciate you, appreciate each and every one of you. And I'll talk to you soon.
