Welcome back to DNI and the Power of One for joining me again today. It's been a minute. You know, truth be told, it was a little bit under the weather with allergies and stuff and that is not a sound anyone wants to hear. My voice is bad enough as it is, but I appreciate everybody continuing to listen, continuing to share. It's my only ask in return is that you help share these episodes with other BNI members so we can help more people. We are back with your show. Submissions, questions etc Support sent in BNI power of1.com you can leave them there. We will definitely make sure to get to them. Same place for weekly presentations as well. So let's dive right in. Today is from Dwight. He is in Oregon and he says hello Tim. I'm a support coach here in Oregon. Oregon however and I have four chapters I wanted to get your take on. Just how much date does a visitor get to say at a chapter meeting? Also with subs. We know they are representing the chapter member but some of them are expecting more interaction. I don't think any of our chapters are doing the same but wanted to see how you address this area. Thank you. Okay, it's a great question and I'm going to go a little bit deeper too, especially on the sub side. But visitors are allowed to do a weekly presentation two times. Two times. Then they either need to decide to join or not. Hopefully they're deciding after the first time. But let's say somebody visits your chapter you allow them to do as long as they're not in competition with another member. Even then if I was a member and my competition showed up and did a weekly presentation, I wouldn't freak out about it. They can't join. I wouldn't worry about Always kind of baffles my mind a little bit when people get really in a tizzy around that. You know, I've talked to some members before about it and they're like oh my competition Showed up and they let them do a weekly presentation and screw all of you. And I and just all upset. And I was like, listen, if your competitor can show up to your BNI meeting one time, speak for 60 seconds, and you're worried that all your potential referrals from that group that you are a member of are going to go to that person, you have much bigger problems going on and probably why. Freaking out the way they were. So are they allowed to? Are they supposed to? No. Does it happen? Yes. Should you freak out about it? No. They can't join anyways, but whatever. So zooming visitor who can actually join the chapter comes in, they can do a weekly presentation, your chapter invites them to apply, they got to think about it, they come back the next week, they're allowed to do a weekly presentation. At that point, no longer allowed to unless they have an active application in. Now, one mistake I've seen chapters make is they somebody applies to the chapter, the membership committee is going through their process for whatever godforsaken reason, it's taking weeks, let's say, and they don't let the person speak anymore because they're a visitor. And it's like, no, they're not. They're not a visitor anymore. They are an applicant, right? They've applied for membership. So if they've applied until they're declined or accepted, they are allowed to do their weekly presentation still because they are no longer a visitor. But if they've not applied two times now, generally the question I get is, well, two times over what time period ever is the way the policy is written? Ever. If you're like, well, you can do two times, and then you get to wait six months, well, they're going to wait six months. They'll come back, do two times, and they'll just keep planning, playing this game. And this is where it gets into substitutes. Substitutes are there to represent the member, and then if they are a visitor, meaning they can apply to the chapter and they're not in competition with another member, they're allowed to do their weekly presentation two times. Well, how often? Two times over ever. Two times. That's it. No more. Because you're a visitor of the chapter. So what happens is the chapters allow themselves to get taken advantage of, both by visitors, but most definitely by substitutes. You know, the past member who doesn't commit to the chapter anymore, but is free to sub at any point for anybody, that person is a scumbag. That's probably harsh. But they're taking advantage of you. They're saying I can be here every week. I just don't want to be held to the same standards. I don't want to be held accountable. I don't want to pay membership dues. I don't want to do all the things you're doing. So I just want to take advantage of you. So how do you stop that? Well, two times after that, free to sub. You're free to come in and represent a member's business, but you're not allowed to talk about yours anymore. Guess what will happen? They're not going to be as available to substitute anymore. Right. And that's okay. That's okay. We've done podcasts in the past about substitutes. Why do we have a substitute program? The reason is not so that you don't get an absence. The reason is how do you bring value to a chapter meeting when you're not there? And if we're all using the same person who is just, you know, shockingly available all the time but can't commit to us, we're bringing zero value. We've made the substitute program about ourselves and not about the chapter. We've. We've completely reversed the purpose. And the only way you can stop that is treat them like a visitor at that moment and follow the same policy, which again, is two times. So that's. That's the. The answer to it. It is visitors are more than welcome. We want them there. We want them to feel a part of it. Now, I'll tell you, some of the most successful chapters, the largest chapters, don't even let the visitors talk, mostly because of time element. They don't even have the time to do it. But there is something to that. There is something to the idea of, hey, come visit. They. What they do is visitor will come in, they interact during open networking. The person who invite him is introducing them to a bunch of people. I'm talking like large chapters, which you should be mimicking in many ways. You should act as if. But they'll bring the visitor in, and then during the visitor part, the member who invited the visitor will stand up and say, hey, this is, you know, Billy Bob that I brought. He does, you know, XYZ company and profession. He's amazing. And then they both sit down and that's it. They don't let the visitor, you want to speak at our meeting, become a member. And there's something to that part. There's a lot. There's really something there. If we're just like, hey, come and you can talk about you, you know, fine. You could I'm again, the BNI is set up for the visitors to do introductions, but if you just have it and like, you can come anytime you want and talk anytime you want for as many times as you want,

will be taken advantage of. And then the chapter is like, curious why they're not growing. It's the same thing with, you know, we've done podcasts on this in the past too. The chapters that'd be like, we've got this visitor and we can't understand why he's not joining. He's come twice. We've given him so much business already, and it's like, you can't understand why he's not joining. Why would he join? You're giving away everything for free. And I don't mean dues wise free, meaning free of commitment and free of obligation to want to give back. So why would he join? Right. So that's. That's really the answer. You want to be. Listen, the experience is what makes somebody join. So we want to be welcoming, we want to be friendly. I. And the chapters, those large chapters that don't let them speak are all of that. They're very welcoming, they're very friendly. Again, big open networking. They're being introduced. They see the value, they feel, feel it. And I think there's a little something to the, you know, hey, like, we'll introduce you, but you're not going to introduce you. The person who invited is going to introduce you and tell everybody how great you are real fast, like 10 seconds. But if you want to talk about your business and what a referral for you is, join us. I think there's something to that experience. But even if you don't do that, you let them speak, but you remind them. Listen, what'd you think? We'd love to. Ah, I got to think about it. Great. Tell you what, come back one more time. One more time. Come back next week, feel it again. Let him speak. What you think? I don't know. All right, we completely understand that. We hope you join. We'd love to see you join, but you've maxed out the amount of times you're going to be able to represent yourself here without joining. That, that takeaway that, hey, listen, this is something valuable, this is something we're all committed to, is important, and it plays into that experience and I think will help with conversion as well. So how much does a visitor get to stay at a meeting? The same amount of time or none, I guess, in the big chapters that your members get and. But only twice ever. Hopefully that makes sense. Love to get your feedback. You can leave feedback at in the common areas in either Apple Podcasts Spotify, however you might be hearing this as always leave a review Help us help more members by sharing recommending, you know, talking about the podcast to your fellow members. The more we can help in your chapter, the more your results will come from that, right? If we if we can improve everybody's skill sets and understandings, your chapter will become more effective. I appreciate you all humbled you are listening and I hope you have a fantastic day.

Episode: BNI 907: How Much Can Visitors & Subs Speak?
Host: Tim Roberts
Date: June 29, 2026
In this episode, host Tim Roberts addresses a common question from BNI support coach Dwight in Oregon: How much can visitors and substitutes (subs) actually speak at a BNI chapter meeting? Tim offers a deep dive into BNI policies about visitor and sub participation, explores the rationale behind these rules, and discusses how following them can maximize both chapter growth and member engagement.
“Visitors are allowed to do a weekly presentation two times. Two times. Then they either need to decide to join or not.” (03:02 – Tim Roberts)
“…if your competitor can show up to your BNI meeting one time, speak for 60 seconds, and you’re worried that all your potential referrals...are going to go to that person, you have much bigger problems going on…” (03:40 – Tim Roberts)
“…if they've applied until they're declined or accepted, they are allowed to do their weekly presentation still because they are no longer a visitor.” (04:20 – Tim Roberts)
“…the past member who doesn't commit to the chapter anymore, but is free to sub at any point for anybody, that person is a scumbag. That’s probably harsh. But they're taking advantage of you.” (06:10 – Tim Roberts)
“The experience is what makes somebody join...there’s really something there...if you want to talk about your business and what a referral for you is, join us.” (08:44 – Tim Roberts)
On visitor speaking limits:
“Are they allowed to? Are they supposed to? No. Does it happen? Yes. Should you freak out about it? No.” (03:23 – Tim Roberts)
On serial substitutes:
“…they just want to take advantage of you. So how do you stop that? Well, two times…after that, free to sub…not allowed to talk about yours anymore.” (06:35 – Tim Roberts)
On why strict limits matter:
“You can't understand why he's not joining. Why would he join? You're giving away everything for free...free of commitment and free of obligation to want to give back.” (09:12 – Tim Roberts)
On the experience that drives conversion:
“…this is something valuable, this is something we're all committed to, is important, and it plays into that experience and I think will help with conversion as well.” (10:40 – Tim Roberts)
