O.Com It's Tuesday here on your second date update podcast, which means you get a little awkward. All right.
Listener
Yes.
Host
And today's is pretty special because there is. I don't know if you saw it, but like a viral TikTok issue with a kid's birthday party where they all ended in tears. One of the parents is actually on the phone with us to deal with it. So it's going to be fun. But before we get to it, I just got to say, I know. You can tell we look cuter today. That's how the tone and our voice. Exactly. Because we got our merch for a cause came in. And the gear is so cute. I'm in a sweatshirt right now, and I think I'm going to wear this every day for the next foreseeable future.
Jeffrey
It's perfect for summer.
Host
It really is. And it's the second date update edition. Of course, 100% of proceeds are going to convoy of hope, so please order yours now. And note that it's not white. Okay? It's a cream. I learned bone.
Jeffrey
That's what we call it.
Host
It's bone. All right. Order your merch today. Tag us in your socials when you get it at Brooke and Jeffrey. And then, hey, sit back and enjoy some awkwardness. It's your awkward Tuesday phone call.
Brooke
One of the most dramatic calls we've had all year. And it all started with a weird disagreement at a build a bear workshop.
Host
Where all big disagreements happen.
Brooke
Of course.
Host
Fights I've gotten in.
Brooke
Oh, yeah. Children were in te. Their parents were upset and even went viral on TikTok. And now one father's decided it's time to get justice and confront the person who started the drama. Hey, you're gonna hear what went down at Build a bear in your brand new awkward Big tease.
Host
I know. I mean, can't write that stuff better.
Brooke
The most awkward Tuesday phone call coming up right after this. It's awkward. It's Tuesday. It's awkward Tuesday phone call. Different radio shows excel at different types of content.
Host
Okay.
Brooke
Some shows are really good with health and wellness tips.
Host
Oh, God.
Brooke
Other ones don't judge the other shows.
Host
Not our wheelhouse. Yeah, yeah.
Brooke
Other ones focus more on true crime stories. But today, we're honing in on our wheelhouse. Children's birthday party drama. It's where we thrive. And I bring it up because there's a story that's actually been going viral on Tick tock lately. I'm not sure if you guys have heard about it yet, but one of the people who was directly involved reached out to us, saying, hey, I could really, really use your help.
Host
Interesting that children's birthdays aren't in my algorithm. Jeffrey.
Brooke
Yeah, I don't know why. Let's talk to him, though. His name is Richard. Richard, welcome to the show.
Richard
How are you doing?
Host
Apparently better than you. If you're viral, TikTok for an issue.
Richard
Well, okay, I'm not the one viral, but my daughter was a part of it.
Brooke
Oh. So Brooklyn's not as good as your daughter.
Host
Yeah.
Brooke
Or not as bad as your daughter.
Host
Yeah.
Brooke
It's not a good slam.
Host
Let's just. Yeah, yeah.
Brooke
We shouldn't be slamming our listeners as soon as they ask us for help. Sorry about that. Richard, tell us what's going on. You were involved with this birthday drama how?
Richard
Well, my, my daughter's 7 years old and she was invited to this birthday party. So basically I had to drop her off at the mall, like in the food court. And what I understood the plan was they were gonna go have lunch and do party activities. And when then the group was gonna head over to Build a bear.
Brooke
Just a bunch of 7 year olds freely roaming the mall figuring it out.
Host
Oh, it's like a build a bear.
Richard
Party the birthday girl's mom was taking care of.
Host
Don't you love that age when your kids finally get to the drop off parties and you don't have to stay any longer?
Richard
Yeah, it was great. I'll be back in a few hours. It was perfect.
Host
Awesome.
Brooke
Okay, sounds. Sounds like a good plan.
Host
Yeah.
Richard
Yeah. So I go home and I come back in a few hours and there's my daughter just in tears. When I see her, she's in, she's crying.
Brooke
Oh, no. Pretty Standard for post 7 year old birthday party though.
Host
There's always one kid at the party.
Brooke
Yeah.
Host
I mean, it sucks that it's yours. I get it.
Richard
Well, it was more than my kid. It was other kids too. They were all upset.
Jeffrey
They're all stuff.
Host
Wow.
Jeffrey
What the heck happened? Did Jeff show up and do a parody song in the middle of the party?
Brooke
Probably.
Jeffrey
Oh, they'd be laughing then.
Brooke
Yeah. What happened?
Richard
So I got her in the car and asked what happened. She said that the mom forced all the girls to give their Build A bears to the birthday girl.
Jeffrey
No way.
Host
Wait, what? Like they went to a party and they made their own Build a Bear without knowing it was for the birthday girl name?
Jeffrey
That's exactly. I'm not even involved in the bear.
Richard
World or children's world.
Jeffrey
And I want to fight everyone right now.
Host
Why would the little birthday girl need. It's a lot of bears. 11 stuffed animals. Like, why would the mom do that?
Richard
That's what I was asking myself. So I contacted another mom who was involved.
Brooke
Yeah.
Richard
And she, she couldn't believe it either. She was really upset. Wow.
Host
See?
Jeffrey
Okay, so this is like the normal reaction. Everyone's agreeing.
Brooke
It blindsided all of the parents, the children there, obviously.
Host
I mean, what was the reason? Did you ever get to the Bottom of that?
Richard
Well, what she said was that the mom wanted each girl to build a bear so that like, her daughter would remember each one of them by the bear that they built. They built for her.
Brooke
Was that. Was that laid out in, like, the invitation that all the kids were going to be building a bear for the birthday girl?
Richard
No, no, my. My daughter thought she was getting the bear to bring home. I mean. Okay, we already gave a gift.
Host
That is so weird.
Jeffrey
Okay, hold on.
Host
I mean, you didn't pay for it, right? Like the mom paid for question.
Jeffrey
Those are expensive.
Host
The birthday mom paid for everybody to make these.
Richard
Yeah, she did pay for the build a bear experience.
Brooke
Well, the birthday mom paid for the cake too, I'm assuming, and she gave some of that away, so at least she' kind of generous.
Jeffrey
Okay, look, let me play advocate really quick. Think about it. From the birthday girl, everyone goes bears. Every night she goes to bed, it's like, this is Sarah's bear, this is Brook's bear. This is Jeff. She's going to think of her friends. And the mom paid for it. So that. Just wanting to throw that out there.
Host
But how as a mother could you see all these children crying? This is the choice. This is the choice I'm making.
Jeffrey
I'm just saying I see where maybe.
Richard
I think exactly what Brooke thinks. All these girls had a stand in line. They had to make each bear, and then they were. All the bears were ripped away from them at the end.
Jeffrey
Crying line of kids like, here you go.
Host
It's so ridiculous.
Jeffrey
Yeah.
Richard
Okay, so I have the lady's number. I want to contact her and tell her this isn't okay.
Jeffrey
Are you going to call.
Brooke
You want to call the mom of the birthday girl who set this up?
Richard
Yeah, I want to contact her and say it's not right. It's not okay.
Host
Okay. Get your bear back. I mean, is that what you're going to ask for? The bear bag?
Richard
That would be a cherry on top. I don't expect it. But I just need her to know what she did was wrong. Okay, so I don't know how to say it. I want you guys to tell me what to say.
Brooke
Gotcha. So you want advice on how to call the mother of the birthday girl after the birthday's over to tell her it's not cool that she made all of the children at the party build. Build a bears and then gift them all to her daughter at the very end?
Richard
She's a build. She's a build a bear thief. I want to confront.
Brooke
Okay. Not sure if the name calling will work, but we'll have some ideas for you when we come back.
Richard
I'm calling you. I can't be trusted.
Brooke
All right, but remember, you're making the call when we come back for your awkward Tuesday phone call. Build a bear edition. Just let's try and calm down a little bit. We're going to play a song and do it right after this.
Richard
I'm not sure I can, but hurry up.
Brooke
Let's do this. I'll try.
Ad Voice
Hold on.
Brooke
It's awkward.
Jeffrey
It's Tuesday.
Brooke
It's awkward Tuesday phone call. I know Brooke has said many times she loves it when other parents call and tell her she's doing a bad job of mothering.
Host
Text, emails, direct messages, all of us.
Brooke
We do a whole segment on it. Tell Brooke she's a bad mom.
Jeffrey
Oh God.
Brooke
But the thing is, not everybody is as receptive to parental criticism as Brooke is. Yeah, that's why our listener Richard needs our help today. Cuz he was upset after dropping his seven year old daughter off at a build a Bear birthday party. And when he picked her up, his daughter was crying cuz the host mom made all of the children give their Build a Bears to the birthday girl as like a big happy gift to remember everybody by.
Jeffrey
But there was some type of logic behind.
Host
I mean, we talk about core memories. This is definitely you're never going to forget.
Brooke
But Richard's not the only parent who was upset by hearing. He does want to be the one though, who calls up the mom and lets her know that he thinks what she did wasn't really right. Yeah. So how does he politely deliver that message so the mom gets it? Let's go to our child's rearing expert. Jose, what's your advice?
Jeffrey
Well, I would play vague here and just ask, hey, have you heard from any other parents about the party? Because likely she's gonna say, yeah, I have. And if not, you can just be like, I hear some of them are upset.
Host
Oh, blame it on other people.
Jeffrey
Thank you.
Host
That is so passive aggressive group thing.
Jeffrey
Everyone's upset.
Brooke
I get what he's saying. That way Richard doesn't have to own all of the anger for it. He can share some of the blame with the parents. Richard, what do you think about that bully her Gaslight.
Richard
Yeah, I mean, what if she says I haven't heard anything.
Brooke
Yeah, well just then you can break the news. I heard from one other. So throw one other name.
Host
Drop some other moms.
Brooke
Yeah, there you go.
Jeffrey
Yeah, I heard from so and so.
Brooke
Good luck beating that advice no, honestly.
Host
Like, I know you heard from another parent what this mom's intentions were, but I. If you want her to, like, understand what she did is wrong, I think that you need to have her explain why, like, you haven't just asked her. I think you need to come in with an open mind. Nobody ever changes their mind if they're attacked, right?
Brooke
Yeah.
Host
If you're on the defense, you are never going to see somebody's else's opinion.
Richard
I feel like I see why she did it. She wanted this special moment strictly for her daughter.
Brooke
Okay.
Host
Yeah.
Brooke
But maybe. Maybe if you just ask her to say that, she'll realize how dumb it is coming out of her own mouth. I do that all the time. I'm starting to talk, I'm making a point, and I'm like, wow, that is really stupid.
Jeffrey
Well, you know what I'm saying?
Brooke
I am wrong. I'm sorry. So you can choose either one of those pieces of advice or none. Richard. Either one. We're going to be here waiting to jump in if we feel like you need a little bit of help. I think you got it.
Richard
Okay.
Jeffrey
As long as you're calm. You were pretty heated, like, five years ago.
Host
Don't get so upset. I mean, in the end, it's just a teddy bear. Those are nice, expensive bears. Custom sound.
Brooke
And it's not a teddy bear. It's 12 teddy bears.
Richard
It's so much more than it's. Yeah.
Brooke
Okay.
Richard
Making all these girls feel bad.
Megan
Well, don't.
Brooke
Sorry. Yeah, we don't. We don't want to get you all excited again. Remember to stay calm. We're going to dial this mom for you, let you talk to her. Here we go.
Richard
I'm going to try to keep it under control.
Brooke
All right, you got this, buddy. Here we go.
Listener
Hello?
Richard
Hi. Is this Megan?
Listener
Yeah. Who's this?
Richard
Hi. This is Richard. I'm Vanessa's dad.
Listener
Oh, yeah. Okay. Hi. How are you?
Richard
Hi. Good. First off, I just wanted to thank you for inviting my daughter to the birthday party and.
Listener
Oh, no problem. That's refreshing.
Richard
Well, I will say she had a really good time, but there was one little issue, and I'm just kind of wondering if you had feedback from other parents.
Listener
Yeah, I've already had some other whiny parents call about this issue, so whatever you're about to say, just. Just save it.
Richard
So I'm assuming what you're talking about is the build a bear situation.
Listener
Yeah. So I don't think any of you really understand that it was my child's birthday party. So I get to make the rules.
Richard
Oh, right, you get to make the rules.
Listener
Yeah.
Richard
And. And with no regard to the other children's feelings. That. Was that one of the rules?
Listener
You know I paid for all the bears, right? I don't. I didn't see your credit card plopped down on the desk at Build a Bear. It was mine.
Richard
So you bought every one of their tears is what you're saying?
Listener
Tears? Oh, my gosh. Give me a.
Richard
You purchased. You purchased each. Was it. Was it Build a Tear?
Listener
This was a birthday party, not a charity event to give bears to the left.
Richard
Charity event? It was a labor camp.
Ad Voice
A labor camp?
Richard
You put all these girls to work for your daughter? I'm not the only one who thinks this. All the parents are talking and they all kind of think you're a jerk.
Listener
Okay, great. Go get together and report me to the Build A Bear police. Who cares? It's done.
Richard
Well, you should have them make a Build a Bear police bear and then just take that away too.
Listener
Ooh. Burn. Thank you. Ow. That hurt.
Richard
You know what the truth is? You know who else thinks you're a jerk? Everybody listening on the radio right now because you're on Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning.
Listener
What are you talking about? What the hell is going on?
Richard
Yeah, you just got outed for being a first class jerk to the entire country.
Listener
What the hell is that?
Host
What the point of this was? It wasn't to outer for being an a hole.
Brooke
No, Call her a labor camp worker.
Jeffrey
That was the funniest back and forth.
Listener
I may have ever heard. Excuse me, can anyone tell me what's going on?
Brooke
Yeah. Yeah. Hey, so, Megan, he wasn't lying. You actually are on the radio right now on Brooke and Jeffrey in the Morning. That's our show.
Jeffrey
Good morning.
Host
For advice. We were trying to help the situation, not make it worse.
Listener
What is this even for? Like, I don't. What's going on?
Jeffrey
Sorry.
Brooke
It's a healing segment that we do about bringing parents together and kindly talking to each other.
Listener
Did he get that memo?
Brooke
Yeah. No. Well, it's actually called an awkward Tuesday phone call because we knew that this conversation wasn't going to be flawless. I don't think anybody expected it to nose dive like it did.
Jeffrey
That was wild.
Host
What happened? Richard, we told you, open my call.
Richard
I tried. I tried my best.
Host
That was your best?
Richard
She was an a hole from the very beginning. She called everyone whiny.
Host
Okay, Yeah. I mean, you're not wrong, but also.
Brooke
Yeah, you gotta practice being the bigger man in that situation. Richard. But I think it's too late for that now.
Richard
So.
Brooke
Listen, Megan, maybe the message didn't come across quite the way we wanted it to, but do you understand the sentiment behind it? That there's a lot of parents that were upset by what happened because their children were crying at the end of the party? You must have noticed.
Listener
Yeah, I'm sorry. That they didn't teach their kids how to grasp the concept of party etiquette. It wasn't their birthdays.
Jeffrey
I know.
Host
Well, I know, but like you said that you didn't tell the kids at the beginning of the party that they were building a bear for the birthday girl.
Listener
They're seven years old. They would have ruined the damn surprise.
Richard
Oh, my God.
Brooke
She does have a point a little bit there, but it's still. It's not fair.
Jeffrey
But they wouldn't have given their best.
Host
These people also already brought gifts like they brought gifts already. And that was something they put thought into of what your daughter would like.
Listener
God, you sound like one of the damn whiny parents that called.
Jeffrey
I would say Brooke would love a build a bear if he could.
Host
Even if you still think you're right, which is fine. Like you're gonna ruin your daughter's social life if you keep down this line.
Jeffrey
That's a good point.
Host
She's not gonna get invited to birthday parties because of this.
Brooke
Good.
Listener
She doesn't want those kind of friends anyway. And where do you guys get off? I hope you're proud of yourself for trying to drag a good mom down on live radio. For trying to make her daughter happy.
Brooke
Okay, let's not do the Brooke, Brooke. Tell her what a good mom she is.
Jeffrey
It all gets thrown on Brooke.
Host
I love it. I just don't know that that's true.
Brooke
Well, it doesn't matter if you believe it, you should say it.
Host
I mean, I think that you're trying to make your daughter happy, which is.
Brooke
You should try harder with this apology.
Host
That's what we all want for our children. I just think that maybe the of looking at others and putting others first is a good one too.
Listener
Oh, thank you. Thank you so much for all of the tips of how to be a good mother. How about I give you guys some advice? Get real jobs.
Richard
Oh, I'm trying.
Brooke
I'm un. My mother gives me that same advice. You really are a good mom.
Listener
Who the hell works on radio anymore? Nobody.
Host
Yeah, I mean, you keep laying down.
Brooke
Truth bombs on us, Megan, and I'm coming around on you.
Jeffrey
How does she get everyone else feel bad?
Brooke
Richard, I want to work in your labor camp, the next one that you set up. So give us a call. I want to build a tear and I will cry.
Richard
You know what? I don't care. She's a jerk. Everyone heard how much of a jerk she is. I kind of wish the girls could have given all the food back too and vomit it all over.
Brooke
Richard, you really got to work on your Slams keep getting worse as the call goes on.
Host
I would call that a bad that's also a bad parent Brooke and Jeffrey.

Brooke and Jeffrey: Second Date Update – Episode Summary: "Awkward Tuesday: Ruin A Birthday"
Introduction
In the March 11, 2025 episode of Brooke and Jeffrey: Second Date Update, hosted by iHeartPodcasts, Brooke and Jeffrey delve into a particularly sensitive and emotional topic involving a viral incident at a children's birthday party. Titled "Awkward Tuesday: Ruin A Birthday," the episode explores the complexities of parental expectations, social media repercussions, and conflict resolution among parents.
Main Story: The Viral Birthday Party Drama
The episode centers around a distressing incident that unfolded during a seven-year-old girl's birthday party at Build-A-Bear Workshop, which subsequently went viral on TikTok. A concerned parent, Richard, reaches out to the hosts seeking guidance after his daughter and other children were left in tears following the party activities.
Listener's Account and Initial Reactions
Richard explains that he entrusted his daughter to the birthday girl's mother with the understanding that the party would include lunch and activities, culminating in a session at Build-A-Bear. However, upon returning, he discovered that all the children were upset because the mothers had required each girl to create a bear, which was then collectively given to the birthday girl. This unexpected twist left the children feeling deprived and emotional.
Brooke and Jeffrey empathize with Richard, acknowledging the emotional toll such incidents can have on both children and parents. They emphasize the importance of clear communication and setting expectations beforehand to prevent misunderstandings.
Advice and Conflict Resolution Strategies
The hosts provide Richard with advice on how to approach the birthday girl's mother, Megan, to express his concerns without escalating the situation. They suggest maintaining a calm demeanor and using subtle language to convey the collective dissatisfaction among the parents.
However, Richard attempts to implement this advice during a live phone call on air, which quickly devolves into hostility. Megan responds defensively, labeling other parents as "whiny" and dismissing Richard's grievances.
The confrontation highlights the challenges of mediated conflict resolution, especially in emotionally charged situations. Brooke and Jeffrey reflect on the difficulty of changing someone's perspective when they feel attacked.
The Awkward Phone Call and Its Aftermath
The live phone call serves as a poignant example of how attempts at direct confrontation can backfire, leading to increased tension and misunderstanding. Richard expresses frustration over Megan's dismissive attitude, while Megan defends her actions as a way to create memorable gifts for her daughter.
The episode underscores the importance of empathy and open-mindedness in resolving conflicts, especially when children's emotions and social interactions are at stake.
Host Reflections and Takeaways
Brooke and Jeffrey conclude the episode by reflecting on the importance of approaching conflicts with a calm and understanding mindset. They acknowledge that while not every confrontation can be resolved smoothly, striving for respectful dialogue can prevent further misunderstandings and foster better relationships among parents.
They also emphasize the role of communication in setting clear expectations and the need for parents to consider the feelings and experiences of all children involved in social gatherings.
Conclusion
"Awkward Tuesday: Ruin A Birthday" offers a candid exploration of the challenges parents face in navigating social expectations and the impact of social media on personal interactions. Through Richard's experience and the ensuing live confrontation, Brooke and Jeffrey highlight the necessity of empathy, clear communication, and constructive conflict resolution to maintain harmonious relationships within parenting communities.

Final Thoughts
This episode serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance parents must maintain in orchestrating memorable events for their children while respecting the emotional wellbeing of all participants. Brooke and Jeffrey effectively use Richard's story to shed light on broader themes of empathy, communication, and the complexities of modern parenting in a digitally connected world.
