Most meetings are a waste of time. We know this. There's a million memes ramming the point home. But - here's a revolutionary idea - what if they were actually... useful? Communications expert Chris Fenning is back, this time with his new book Effective Meetings - short enough to read in an hour, useful enough you'll want to read it twice. Chris explains how to tell which meetings shouldn't happen at all + why an agenda won't fix a thing. Plus, I share my trauma over three days of residential training on how to run a meeting. Horrific. Though admittedly quite funny if you didn't have to actually be there. Look for other episodes in the Author Interview strand. Dr. Craig Yorke was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts. He received a BA from Harvard College in 1970 and an MD from Harvard Medical School in 1974. His parental directive insisted he avenge centuries of bigotry with a life of infinite success. After a neurosurgical residency at the University of California at San Francisco, he and his wife Mary found their way to an unlikely destination. He practiced in Topeka, Kansas, for 25 years, wrestling with his history and the armored identity it had imposed. He and Mary raised two admirable boys, Zack who lives in Brooklyn and Chris who calls Seattle home. Dr. Yorke brews coffee for two each morning in the colonial home they’ve occupied for 33 years. He’s a credible violinist, having played the Bruch G Minor concerto with the Boston Pops at 17, and hits tennis balls with passion. Steep is his first book. FF: Measured in Gold The U.S. is over $39.4 trillion in debt. The interest on that debt has doubled in the last 5 years. The government needs to quit spending more than the citizens are willing to pay in taxes, which is already at a breaking point. What happens if you save money in dollars for retirement? What if you invested in stocks? What if you saved in gold? Many parents have taught their kids to save in dollars. We explain why, with inflation, this is not a good idea. Measuring things in the price of dollars is inaccurate in the long term, as the purchasing power is being eroded every year. What if we measured things in gold? Americans love to hear the rags-to-riches stories of those who went from the lowest of the low to the highest of the high. If you are struggling with finances now, use that to push you to learn more, be more, and do more. It wasn't comfortable living in a warehouse and sleeping on the floor with no heat in December. It wasn't comfortable to be in a financially difficult position in 2007. However, those events pushed us to become what we are now. You can use today's adversity to propel you to a better position later if you are willing to learn, grow, and apply those lessons. Hospitality and Helicopter Moms If your kids do not learn to make decisions for themselves when they are young, they will not know how to make good choices when they grow up. The decisions that are made at the top, whether that be decisions by management in a business or by the leader of a family, will affect everything all the way down the chain. Just like the wolf is the apex predator in Yellowstone Park and helps to keep the rest of the ecosystem balanced, gold is the apex predator that helps to keep the economy from the waste, fraud, and abuse that we have now. We talk about how parenting, nature, business, and economics have integrated similarities that show how lessons learned in one area can be applied to another. We talk about you can use this information to raise your kids to be good adults or get better results from people that work in your business, as well as how gold's effects could be used to our advantage. Use these lessons to make your family life, business, and finances a better place!
