It was unusual that the ball was hitting the ground more than usual today.
B
And I think I'm going to take what you were going to say. But essentially, and Josh has talked about this, I think you're also trying some new stuff when you're at camp. You're getting used to some new personnel as well. But I think this gives you the flexibility and the availability to kind of try some new stuff, see if it works, see if it doesn't. I'm so proud of you.
C
So, like, it's so tough for me to not talk.
A
Buffalo plus, your interactive look at the week in football, brought to you by Connors and Ferris.
B
All right, welcome back to the Buffalo plus channel, presented by Connors and Ferris, Mike Catalana, Dan Fates, I am Jenna Cottrell. Please be sure to, like, comment, subscribe and share. Day two of Bill's training camp here at Fischer. We're gonna get into our pass catcher of the day, our new dude of the day. People were asking if you were saying the word nude, which. No. So new dude of the day, talk a little bit about the heat as well. But first off, where do you want to start with this? Mike?
C
It's a cliche. The defense is ahead of the offense at this time of the year.
A
Yes.
C
The Bills defense is ahead of their offense at this time of the year.
A
And they were ahead at this time last year and probably the previous 10 years before that.
C
Yeah. When you watch them play, like you're looking for those plays. And we always joke about it, the crowd cheers for offensive plays. They just do.
A
They cheer for running plays.
C
Yeah. Which is funny.
A
It is the season of 67 yarder. It was unbelievable. Untouched. Yeah.
C
But they. You like seeing that and then you realize that they are doing that against your defense. But not that they don't get excited about big plays made. Like if Trey made a play when he did or, you know, Hairston as a rookie, they get excited about that. But I guess that's just when you're watching. You have to realize that when they ramp it up to this version of 11 on 11, the offense looks like they're having issues, but this won't last.
B
Can you explain that to people, though, why that is at this point in the year? Like, it's so early on, why the defense would be able to be ahead of the offense?
A
Well, the offense is trying new things, so. So it's new concepts.
B
I mean, you don't. You don't have to explain it to me. I'm saying same to the viewers.
A
You had the look of your. Of fear in your eyes. Like, what is he talking about? It's not bread. Jenna understands this.
B
And bread.
C
Yeah, but.
A
Yeah, it's. The offense is obviously trying new things. It may be a certain day of, you know, we're doing third and long, so. Okay. The defense has the advantage in some of these situations, so it's no need to panic. I will say, especially for the offense, Josh wasn't great today. Like, say, take it for what you will. We're not at the point, by any means. We've been over it for a few years of where Mike covered quite a while football, where it was like, oh, boy, this isn't good, and those kind of things. It was unusual that the ball was hitting the ground more than usual today.
B
And I think I'm going to take what you were going to say, but essentially, and Josh has talked about this, I think you're also trying some new stuff. When you're at camp, you're getting used to some new personnel as well, but I think this gives you the flexibility and the availability to kind of try some new stuff, see if it works, see if it doesn't. See what adjustments you need to make. Now. I think sometimes the results don't show on the field, but I do think that can be beneficial for using training camp for what the opportunity can be. I'm so proud of you.
C
It's so tough for me to not talk. So a couple of things. No, that wasn't.
A
Pop a blood vessel.
C
That wasn't what I was gonna say.
B
Okay.
C
But that's fine.
B
Oh, I thought it was two.
C
I have been given some chores not to move. Keep the mic up higher. So I was doing all that, and then I was trying not to interrupt. Jenna.
B
Really proud of you.
C
Points for me.
B
Yeah.
C
I think it's about timing. Offense is about timing, and they don't have their timing. Even with the guys. They have worked together. Defenses react and go. And those poor defensive players don't get to hit anybody like they really want to do. Unless you're Taron Johnson.
A
Yes.
C
Which he might hit somebody, but they have to do it in that way. And they know the limitations, too, so they're flying to the ball. It's not a finished play. And I think that's part of the reason why it looks that way. And then sometimes in coverage, like, it's about timing and the defense can just react, and I think that's why they look better once the timing gets down for the offense, I think then you see them making more plays.
B
Who was a Defensive guy that kind of stood out to you today.
A
I thought it kind of leads into my new dude of the day. Maxwell Harrison looks the part. It's a very raw product right now. But what was I always saying leading into the draft, leading into free agency, of like getting a guy that has the 101 mile per hour fastball, like, I don't care about versatility, I don't need him to be all these things, but have something that can make up for other deficiencies. Maxwell Harrison is still very raw when it comes to technique and press coverages and some of these concepts that I'm sure he's trying to learn right now. But his speed makes up for so much. He was doing one on ones with Keon Coleman early on in the day. Keon had a pretty good release to get outside, had a step, and then Harrison was with him every step of the way after, like the two steps that Keon had. It was that kind of moment where I go, man, you don't. He doesn't have to have perfect technique. It'd be great if he gets it. But he has the ability to make up for some of his flaws and some of his insufficiencies right now as a rookie with just pure speed.
C
I think that's a really good point about having the skill to overcome sometimes when you don't have the technique. When they go to that level, where they will trust him is when the technique comes aboard. Because NFL players will torture you if you're not right. I mean, it's just. And they get by on that speed and that ability. All different levels of football, until this one. This is the part where it's like whoever you are going against is an NFL player. That's another thing about the offenses and the defense. The defense kind of knows what they're doing. They're not scheming, they're not trying to get them into certain things. So they're trying to run the plays. We all know this from playing sports. Sometimes when you're scrimmaging with your own team, you kind of know what's coming. When you were playing baseball, you knew the pitcher. You saw him all the time. I think it's just a little bit of that. But to your point, yes, some of these guys have stepped up. Another guy, I saw him make a couple of plays today was Demar Hamlin.
B
Yeah, yeah.
C
And we know where he is in this mix. Trusted. I think you said it the other day, one of you two said about the floor, like him being that player that they know what they've got there. I think demar's out there playing kind of free. He knows who he is, and he knows. And I think he's on the roster.
B
Exactly. He has. He has the framework of knowing what's expected of him. Again, you do know where the floor is. You do know where the ceiling is. But I think that they're pretty close together. And I don't mean that in a negative way. I just mean that as he's someone that's comfortable and confident that he can just play and just react as opposed to being like, where. Where do I need to be? Where do I need to go? And everything that comes with that.
C
And I don't want that to be misconstrued as saying, like, he's the flow bloor player. I'm saying is they know what they have. They need better. They hope it's Cole Bishop or Forest or whoever ends up being in another spot. But I saw him flash a little bit today, made a couple of plays. Got big reaction today, too.
A
Not only Jenna, to your point, too, is the defense is ahead of the offense that we've talked about. There's so many guys getting rotated in on every side.
B
Yeah, like.
A
Like there is. It's tough for me, and I know we can't report totally all of it or who's lining up where, but, like, you can kind of know who's with the. The ones. But, like, there's safeties that are rotating in and out. Like, you're seeing all of these guys get going and out. So it is kind of tough to kind of manage where everybody is, who's running with what teams, because this early in camp where we talk about the defenses ahead, they're just trying to see what they have with some of these guys before they start to narrow it down.
B
Well, before the snap, you're like, who's where? Okay, that's okay. The safeties. And then you'll look, oh, who's at corner? Is it Trey? Is it Hairston? Is it who is it Christian? Ben? They had a couple times where Dane Jackson was taking some snaps of the one. Like all that stuff, it was weird.
A
Seeing 23 going and you're like, what? Oh, yeah, it's Dane.
C
Gets me every time with him because it's just such an iconic number for this group of guys. The other thing I was going to say is the offense is mostly returning players, and I'm not saying that they are set in their positions, but there's a lot of guys fighting. If you went through the offense, we pretty much know. Yes. You have guys like Palmer who are in, you know, you don't know what they're going to get out of a.
A
Lineup three through five for the wide receiver spots.
C
Right.
A
And the third tight end.
C
Whereas on defense, I mean, we've talked about it, there's competition, real competition on the D line, competition, even to some extent at linebacker. But it's returning guys for the most part, but certainly in the corner position, backup corner position, safety position. So each time these guys get these reps and get these opportunities. I'm not saying the offense isn't playing hard. I just think it's a little different for Deon Dawkins to get himself ready for a season than a rookie or a new player.
A
It's so funny because reading some of the comments and wasn't. Not to say I wasn't paying attention, but so many people said how great of a day one Christian Benford had. And I was talking to Matt Beauvais about it, and I was kind of like, I didn't even notice it. Like, I didn't expect it because I wasn't looking for it.
B
It wasn't on your radar.
A
Right. I'm watching Trey, I'm watching Harrison, all these things. And it's like. Well, it's pretty nice, Hairston.
B
Yeah.
A
Okay. How many times have I said it wrong?
B
Twice.
A
Okay.
B
That's okay.
A
Working on it.
B
Yeah. Enunciation is not our strong suit.
A
Dionne Walker, though, nailed it.
C
Well done.
A
But that's the kind of things where it's like, you're still trying to navigate through everything. These early on in training camp, where Benford looked great yesterday, looks solid again today. But it's like you. It's what it's expected. It's what's expected of Terrell Bernard. I'm not sitting there going like, oh, well, Terrell wasn't there on that play. Like, you have different expectations and viewpoints of each player.
B
You grade training camp performances on a curve, and there's some guys that are, you know, they're going to be an A. And it's just, what do they need to get to where they need to be in playing shape and feeling great. And other guys are like, let's see if they can make this roster. Let's see if they can make some nice plays.
C
Yes.
B
Mr. Gecko, you're a huge inspiration to us all. But who was your muse?
D
Oh, my dear old Nat, she imparted many wise words to me. She would say, never let the fame get to your head. Always remember who you are and let people get more than just savings. With Geico's fast and friendly claim support, I lived up to her advice and now anyone can file a claim anywhere and anytime. I miss her so much.
C
Did she go somewhere?
D
Extended quilting trip.
A
Get more than just savings.
C
Get more. With Geico.
B
I will say Dion Walker, he's another guy. I just noticed it. He is huge.
A
Hey, we didn't mention it yesterday, but Sean said he does not have any limitations. They're just, they're just gonna go and see how it is. He was limited all throughout the summer. So you're kind of going to get a taste of what D.N. walker can be.
C
But it is something to see where we talk about. Like when you say Terrell Bernard, well, we have seen him in the correct playoffs make tremendous play. Right? You've seen that and he's in his prime. What you. Then you look at young players either that we haven't seen on the field for the Bills or they haven't done it. They haven't played. And then there's the other players, the guys who have done it multiple times. But whether it's Joey Bosa and how healthy he looks, whether it's Trey White and what he still has left, you get a glimpse of what that is here. But it's the way you have to look at it legitimately and say, Trey knows how to get himself ready. The question will be at that point when everything ramps up and the pads come on, how does he look? How does Bosa look? How do those guys look? Even though they have good histories in the league, it's not about the history in this league. It's about the future, the present and the future. So that's why I don't try to evaluate that too much now because these guys still know how to physically get ready.
B
You talk about the future today after practice, we got to hear from James Cook. Obviously, Cook reported to camp. He's been practicing. He's doing all the things. And you were one of the people that were there for his press conference. What kind of. If people don't want to listen to the full press conference, what are some of the cliff notes?
A
I thought he was very candid today. At times, James is very quiet. We talk about how he's a very soft spoken person, whether he scores three touchdowns in a game or doesn't have anything. Like he's not a big talker with the media. He felt very comfortable and relaxed today talking to the media. The first question that was asked, I was going to Ask it. But somebody beat me to it. I believe it was Ryan o' Halloran from the Buffalo News pretty much asked, why. Why are you here? Like, why did you feel the need to participate? And he goes, it's my job. I'm here to participate. I need to participate on the field so I don't get fined. Okay. He also talked about not only that and the money aspect, but he owes it to his teammates. He wants his teammates to know. And that's something that Bean did emphasize yesterday. The fact that he's a competitor, that he loves his teammates, great teammate, all these things. It got him to the point of, how confident are you that something will get done? And he goes, I'm not going to let this go. Like, I'm going to keep fighting for what I deserve, I want. And then somebody was kind of asking. Elena Getzenberg of ESPN asked, well, do you think you'll get what you want? He kind of says, it'll all work out wherever it is. And Elena says, is that in Buffalo? And he kind of laughs and goes, wherever it is, it'll get worked out wherever it is.
B
Yeah.
A
So I think it's kind of. Especially after hearing Bean yesterday and Cook today, it's kind of where we were before. They talked about having open dialogue, but kind of our stance is been at the whole time. They just appear so far apart from us. We are not.
C
Not in the building.
A
Not in the building. It just feels like James is like, I'm gonna get it, whatever it is, wherever it is. And being. Being like, we're open. We're open.
B
Yeah, yeah.
A
They just seem so far apart.
C
I. I think when I look at it for him, listen, I want that guy to be healthy, play great for the Bills. The health is the biggest thing. So what he is risking being out here is to get injured like any other time when he hasn't gotten paid. And even though they get that bump for this year, it's five point, some odd million, it's not guaranteed or a limited amount of it is guaranteed. So that's a lot of money. But as I said yesterday, he's worth more than that. So he's protecting himself. He's making decisions. So is Brandon Beam.
A
Yep.
C
Right. He's trying to make the best decision for the Bills. This guy's out here, James Cook, talking about his teammates and all, but they all know. The truth is he's got to worry about himself, too. It's quite a place to be. And he's in the final year of a deal. This is when Deals get done, so if they don't come to an agreement, he's got to stay healthy, play well, and get the money elsewhere.
B
I think he's done. Cook has done a good job, though, of like, saying, like, I'm about my business, and also, I am here I am doing everything that is expected of me. I wanted my teammates to know that I'm. I'm prepared, all that stuff. Like, I think it's. Obviously, it's easy to have the business side bleed over into things, but I feel like I really appreciate the way Cook is approaching it because it's your money, and I kind of get how you would. You. There would be situations where you'd be a little scorned at some point.
A
Yeah, and I always am on the side of the players. Make as much money as you can. It is generational wealth to set up your entire family. I scoff whenever fans are always like, what's a million dollars? It's like, a million dollars. Like, why won't you come play for my team? It's only like, it's a million dollars. Like, let's not act like every player may want to win a Super Bowl. Every player does want to get paid.
B
And also, NFL careers are so short. It's like, you have to maximize your leverage when you have it. And obviously, James Cook does have a ton of leverage right now.
A
Cook was asked where he thinks he is in the NFL Running backs. He kind of pushed back at the report. He's like, I don't know. Where do you think I am? And he's like, I think I'm the best running back in the league. He's like, okay. Like, that is. I've appreciated Cook's candidness, but he's also said, it's a business. I have no hard feelings. I have no beef. He said he loves Buffalo, loves Josh. He loves the fan base. He goes, this is a great organization. They drafted me. They put faith in me, all of these things. It all makes sense. He was also asked if he regrets any of the social media posts. He said he goes, nope, I don't regret anything. Like, this is. He feels very comfortable for what is. Can be an uncomfortable situation. I thought it was hilarious when he said, I like my money. That's why he showed up at minicamp. I. I think they're just so far apart where I just.
B
That's your general impression.
A
That's my. From not being in the building.
C
It's funny you said, I like my money in a different way. That's what Brandon Bean Is saying, yeah, it's not his money, it's his cap space. It's his allocation of money for the roster. He is protecting that. He's right. If it was unlimited and Terry says, sign the check, have at it. He has a responsibility to the entire team. I would say to this point, this is exactly the way the Bills want it to go. And I just want it to be a positive for Cook because it means a lot to the Bills and will mean a lot to him.
A
And hats off to Cook again. Again, first talking.
C
Yeah.
A
Like, how many times Was it lean McCoy didn't talk when it was all of this stuff like going on and we'd go up to him and he'd walk through us like we were those beads in a door frame.
B
Like, wait a minute, what are those called?
A
Those beads.
B
I know, exactly. I had that. I know you're going to be shocked. I had that on my room growing up. Say, 14 year old.
A
Just remember all the times, like, shady.
B
Okay.
C
And then. And then he's come on our podcast. Yeah, sorry about that.
B
That is. He is a Buffalo. Plus guest LaShawn McCoy. More offense. Pass catcher of the day. Who do you have?
C
Curtis Samuel. Number one. He made two. One went off his was. It was actually the play that Demar made, but went up two in the 11 on elevens. Really nice catches. It's that number one. I'm hanging on there. I already. Dan, you weren't on this earlier pod. I think it was when you were on vacation. If it's a big year for him, I'm gonna just say I called it early. So I'm combining two seasons. I said that's the way Dan would take credit for something. Is that good? Am I learning?
A
That's pretty good, actually. You were so early on it, like it was way ahead of everybody.
B
Insufferable.
A
Yeah.
B
Who was your pass catcher?
A
Keon made two nice plays. Okay. Like I said, he got shut down by Maxwell Harrison, but I actually think that he was pretty open in the plays. I think the one Taylor Rapp fell down, the other one was just kind of a busted play. But I like the fact that at least he was making the plays when he was asked to in 11 on 11.
B
Yeah, that's fair. I think mine would be Curtis Samuel as well. I just think he had a couple of nice catches today and I feel like you just see him kind of feeling more and more comfortable and that's what I want to see out of him. Obviously, this is not his first year in Buffalo, but the way the injuries sidelined him last year. He missed a lot of time. So for him to just get back to that rapport with Josh, go from there and make some nice flashy catches, I'll take it.
C
It's got to be strange for him. You know, he's a veteran who's had a lot of success in the league. Comes here. Didn't happen last year. He's still on the roster, let's be honest. Because of what he's making.
A
Yeah.
C
Like, they could have moved on from a player that maybe wouldn't have been in that top three wide receiver room.
A
But came on at the end. He had that game against Denver, which was really good. He led the team in receiving yards.
C
You're right, he did. And I think that's encouraging. But, you know, he had the fourth down play against the Chiefs, too. But it's encouraging. But when you look at their receiver room, he's probably fourth.
A
I think so.
C
Right? For a guy who's had a lot of good seasons in the NFL.
B
Yeah.
C
Here we go. We got to. We're not gonna do numbers again.
B
No math.
C
No math.
B
I was right.
A
Hand up.
B
Think.
A
I was wrong.
B
I was right.
C
Did you hear that? Can we.
B
We gotta clip that. We gotta clip that.
A
They're the same thing.
B
They are the same.
A
They're the same thing. I don't know why there's two words for the same thing, but there's.
C
You know, it's funny when I look back at it, I was paused and I was thinking, my mind is just mush at the moment, because I think Jenna's right, but I don't want to sound stupid. I said you were both right.
A
But also, it's the conviction that I come.
B
I'm gonna say that's what it gets you.
A
My best friend Steve always has the saying, if you're an argument with somebody, whoever wins is. Whoever just talks louder.
B
Oh, my God.
A
He's a talent.
B
A lot of family fights that went that way.
C
Yeah, that's it.
B
Okay, let's talk new dude of the day.
A
And I already said Hairston. Okay, Hairston.
B
Hairston. Okay, so he. Yeah, that's fair. And who do you have? All right, well, we were saying Jackson Hawes.
C
Yeah.
B
Mostly because today I noticed him. He and AJ Epanessa kind of got tangled up a little bit. They went to the ground, and AJ Gave a little to Jackson. Haw's AJ I've never seen first punch of training camp.
A
Did not expect it to be from.
B
AJ Never be on my bingo board.
C
No, that's really kind of wild. It's a bingo card.
A
Okay, that's fine.
B
You're right.
C
He was ready for that.
A
I thought you almost said bongo board.
C
I've played bingo before.
B
Okay. Bingo card.
C
Bingo card. Yes.
B
Okay. Anything else?
C
No, I'm just saying.
A
AJ did he leave practice? For a little bit.
B
I did not see that.
C
Somebody was saying Dorian Williams did. And I don't know. I haven't heard anything yet. Some of it could be heat related. I didn't think it was that hot out there.
B
Was it hot, Dan?
A
It's very hot. Very hot.
C
So I mentioned to Dan that. I said. I asked Dan, I said you were out there shooting. I just. From my perspective of not shooting, which I didn't think it was as crazy hot as was predicted.
B
Full disclosure, the camera weighs how much?
A
20.20Ish pounds. Yeah, that's why I didn't carry it. One point.
B
But still, it's. It's. It's heavy. It's on one shoulder. You have all, like, the microphones, all that stuff. Like, it adds the weight. There's also the heat that comes off of it. So. Yeah, Dan, I would never.
A
Mike does this often. I don't think it was that cold down there on the field. Press box was.
C
Press box sometimes can get a little chilly.
B
I'm not gonna lie.
C
Jenna brings some blankets, get very cold.
B
But that's besides the point. Okay, we want to shout out some really nice people that came up to us to talk Buffalo Plus. You know how much we love that. Brad, Orai and Jan. We love it so much.
