ESPN's Bill Barnwell having an article ranking these skill position players from 1 to 32 in the NFL where the Bills rank in that listing was pretty surprising. I think we can discuss that as well as Tim Graham of the Athletic doing a piece with C.J. gardner, Johnson just kind of his history, his backstory, what he wants to prove. Another interesting read. But first I thought we could start with the ESPN article because I think for us, you know, we are around the team so much and I think sometimes we have a very critical eye because we are around the team so much and we talked about how we want to see them, you know, add to the skill position group. But Mike, I was very surprised when I saw the bills were ranked 29th overall.

Okay, look, I have some issues with the skill position and the way they did the rankings was specifically about the, the players and what's expected of them in 26. And it doesn't really count the quarterback. So the Bills are almost, you know, it's like, oh yeah, you have Josh, but what does he have around him is what it is. So we're talking wide receivers and we're talking running backs and tight ends. We're not talking about offensive line or offensive coordinator and those things. 29th, 29th.

Also, it heavily weighted wide receivers. They said that in the stipulation of the article which where wide receivers were weighted, heavy running backs not as much and the bills ranked 29th. I, I wasn't shocked really. I think it's too low, but I don't think it's that crazy. And you're staring at me.

No, no, I, if you're, if you're saying is if you're going to start and make the majority of our wide receivers. Well, first of all, I might say then just, just give me the wide receiver rankings. But he chose to do it this way and include all of them. The Bills are very hopeful that the tight end is impactful in the passing game, especially with Kincaid and James Cook is just a all pro running back. So if you're going to make those the numbers, it does hurt the Bills right off the bat, right?

Yeah. And it's. He even says in the article it is not a ranking of offenses like this is. So again, you're talking about the offensive line for Buffalo being a strength of their offense. That's not a skill position. I even think about when we're. We're talking about tight ends to some respects. I think as a whole, I like the Bills wide receiver room or tight end room. I think the Bills have a top five tight end room. All of them together. Because I think their skill sets and the way they balance each other out is really nice. They. And again, I have been one of the guys that has been drinking the Dalton Kincaid Kool Aid this offseason, but I can't sit there. When I look at each individual tight end and sit there and say, these tight ends are studs, I think as a group they all play off of one another. But I can't sit there and say any of them are a top 15 tight end in the league off what they've produced. Which is Bill Barnwell saying mainly he was going off to production based off last year.

So I hear you and I think it is one of those things where we have kind of drank the Kool Aid like you said, Dan. Of. Of expecting like, okay, we. We think that Dalton Kincaid now will be able to take this step up because he can stay healthy. But it is so interesting because I'm like seeing Bill Barnwell say, but he hasn't done it before. It. It could puts a little seed of doubt of like, you're right, you are projecting for this guy to have an incredible season and for DJ Moore to have an unbelievable season after kind of not having that the last couple of years. So I, I did think it made it an interesting point, but I did think it was pretty critical.

Yeah. Well, because he's not all that optimistic about D.J. moore.

So when you say. Because I think we look at it and say, well, it's an improvement on what they've had. And if you get Shakir's type of production, I mean, obviously Keon is a wild card and how much they get out of DJ Moore is a bit of an unknown even for a player who's been in the league that long. So they also were looking for players in this type of metric that can make bigger plays. Right. A little more explosive plays. And I do think that's where they lack. Because we've talked about it before. You say who makes the biggest plays in the Bills offense is James Cook and Josh Allen.

And they are either not part of it or devalued somewhat in the list. But it is a little jarring when you look at it and go 29.

29. So in 2025 there were 28th and in 2024 they were 24th.

Yeah. And I'm not going to read Barnwell's whole article. I respect. I think Bill Barnwell has some good insights on things throughout the season. I like him a lot when he's on SVP in the Sports center. But I will say the ending of his synopsis on the Bills, I won't read the whole thing because we know I can't read. But he said for the Bills and all their spending at receiver, the question still lingers. If Allen needs to throw for a first down to win a game, who does he trust to get open? Every team ranked above the Bills has at least one wide receiver that fans would be bringing up as the most obvious answer for their quarterback. The Bills still somewhat do not.

The problem is, and this is where I'm saying I wasn't shocked by the Bills being lower. I have said last year that I think the Bills had one of the worst five bottom five wide receiver rooms. And and obviously this is heavily weighted to wide receivers. My problem is, is that he then has ranked above them, the Tennessee Titans. And I ask anybody right now to name me two skill position players on the Tennessee Titans. I was unaware reading the article because I was like, all right, let's get into this. Kelvin Ridley still playing. Yeah, worse year last year than Keon Coleman and he's 31. So to sit there, and I still think to some respects that Cornell Tate would be the Bill's best wide receiver if he was on their team. They drafted him in the top five this year. But to sit there and automatically say that the Titans have better skill position players when they don't have the running back. I don't know who any of their tight ends are. And you're banking it on Carnell Tate as the obvious player that they'll throw to to get a first down to win the game. That's where I push back. That's where I think this article kind of falls apart because even on Barnwell's standards and requirements of like, let's play his game. Okay, how do the Commanders have a better offense than the Bills? How do the Titans have a better offense skill position than the Bills? I would have the bills probably 25, which I still think is fair. But you can't name those two teams ahead of the Bills. That's where I push back in the article.

But there's not that many teams that you would just pick and say, oh, the Bills are definitely better in this metric than them.

Agreed. I think the metric is flawed, but it's like fine, have the metric be equal across the board because I he has Carolina at number 28. Right. Well, Ted's really good. Yeah, Ted's really Good. So, like, I'm sitting there going, as I'm scrolling through, I'm going, yeah, Tet makes sense. He's a better wide receiver than anything the Bills have. And then I'm like, Terry McLaurin. Okay. For the commanders. And then it's like, you're going to bank on Cornell Tate, like. And the running back is who. I forgot.

But we're still. I'm sorry, we're still only arguing 29 to 28 to 27.

The point that the bills are 29. If we could find a couple of examples where you would say, well, they're probably better than this team. That's an odd metric that the Bills are so poor in when they've scored 30 points a game. Right? Because this is. Is. It is mapped out really, to accentuate the lowest point of the Bill's offense. Now, he didn't set this whole thing up to ridicule the Bills. This is a thing that he does. But it really is where the Bills are going to show up because the quarterback is so dynamic. James Cook is so good. The offensive line is outstanding. J. Joe has done a good job as the play caller. It's just this metric puts them in a. In a negative.

That's why after, like, seeing they were 29, I was like, wow. But then looking at the criteria, I'm like, well, yeah, because the Bills have James Cook. They. You're right. Like, they have Dalton Kincaid. You're also projecting Dalton Kincaid to have a big season, but we at least know that he has been productive when he is out and able to be on the field. So it's like, I. I get the shock of seeing 29, but then when you peel it back and like you were talking about, like, having the Panthers ahead of them, having the Titans ahead of them, I just thought it was. It was probably. It was wild to see because I. I just wasn't expecting 29.

Yeah. And he nitpicked James Cook, who's obviously the Bill's best skilled player outside of Josh Allen, for a couple of fumbles. And obviously James talks about that, but again, like, he was knocking. Obviously, it's a knock on the Bills wide receivers, but then he talks about injuries also being a negative. Okay, so that's fair. The Bills, like Dalton Kincaid, who we think could be a. Emerge into that top seven tight end maybe this year, has had injury concerns. Okay. But then there's supposed to be. He said depth was a bonus, was a plus. Name Me, the other pass catchers on the Las Vegas Raiders who are better than. Than Shakir. Like, that's where this argument that, again, it was a little clickbaity. I don't think it's totally unjust. I just don't think if we're playing his game and his criteria, it doesn't stack up when you start adding all the other teams.

Yeah, his DJ Moore analysis, to me was glass half empty. Like, I can see why you would. You could project it that way. But I was like, wow, that's really quite a statement by him.

I did. I heard Jeremy White on WGR talking about this this morning, and then I looked it up. Josh Allen creates so much offense. He's run for so many touchdowns. But when you look at touchdown passes, when do you think the last year is that Josh Allen went from his season to the next season with more touchdown passes?

So when his touchdown passes increased from the previous year 20 to 21, 2019

to 2019 to 20, he went from. He went from 20 touchdown passes in 19 to 37 in 20, then he went to 36, then he went to 35, then he went to 29, then he went to 28. And last year at 25, now you can make the argument that he runs the ball in a lot.

But, you know, and some of those are sneaks. And James Cook had more touchdowns the year before and all of that. But I think sometimes that becomes a little bit of a skill position stat because you. You need your quarterback or running back to do it. So I would be a little disappointed if this year it's under 25. I mean, I know the numbers could be skewed a little bit, but 25,

if you want to tell me last year they were ranked 29th, I'd be like, yeah, yeah. And then this year they were ranked 24th or 25th. I'd be like, okay, yeah. But yeah.

So I've got two questions to ask you guys. And one. One question. One is a Dan's gonna pat himself on the back and that some people tend to steal takes. You know, you claim that I'm always stealing your takes. I know that.

Ian Harwitz on Twitter, he said, I see the whole DJ Moore as Josh Allen's number one wide receiver, just draft him angle. I do, but can't get past the thought that if this dude was still really has it, wouldn't Ben Johnson have been able to figure something out or at least wanted to keep trying? It's the point that I've Made before of. Look at the team that is getting rid of them. And why are they getting rid of them? You always look at the team that's getting the player and are excited about what it is. But as I've said before, and this is nothing new, it just felt cool to get the validation that somebody else also had the same idea of. We agree that Ben Johnson is one of the smartest offensive minds in football right now. And he was like, yeah, it's cool. We don't need DJ Moore. And that goes back to the Compasses, back into the salary cap of a team has never gotten rid of a player just because of their salary. And if they really wanted to make it work and they thought DJ Moore was. Was this player, I think they could have made it work. And again, that is. You're giving me that death stare. It is Glass Half Empty. I. I understand that. That's probably where I sit a little bit more on the DJ Moore thing than Glass Half Full.

Well, yes, I totally hear that. I think for the Bears, they just wanted to go in a different direction. I also wonder if it's not. It's not the same thing as Stefan Diggs, but Stefan Diggs obviously had stuff left in the tank. It was just, okay, we need to get this guy out of our locker room. And I'm not saying it's the same thing with him and DJ Moore, but I'm saying that you're right. Comfortable enough. Honestly, I feel like the Bears were, like, cool, we got something back.

Yes. Diggs is more of like an A.J. brown comparison.

Because Diggs had incredible years with the Bills. Then it went on. The next year was down. There was all the problems. And then he's traded. Look, he was still very good when he went to Houston and he got hurt. He was good in New England.

Yeah. But that's where the. AJ Brown was spectacular for a few years goes down. And then I think the difference is. I think the Eagles with the. With A.J. brown is a little more similar to what Chicago did, in a sense of Chicago went out and drafted, what, twice now. Drafted pretty high, Drafted the tight end high. Yeah. Dan's boy drafted him. Roma Dunes A. Whereas, like, the Eagles went out this year and drafted and signed and already had a player, but you're still giving up a great player. I think it's. I think I'm very intrigued by what we're going to see out of DJ Moore this year, because we have seen a guy Be a very good player in the league. And let's see what he's got in the tank now for him for this year and next year.

C.J. gardner Johnson article. Tim Graham put it together from the Athletics. So we were in the field house when we saw them talking. And we were like, this is going to be an incredible interview. Because it was. It was just pacing back and forth, the two of them, a lot of talking. You could see pretty animated conversations. But the article really pulled back the curtain on CJ Gardner Johnson, the fact that he's been on so many teams within his NFL career, Super bowl champion, how he has his Persona and how I feel like he does feel the need to live up to it. But I thought it was an interesting article. For a guy that has had a lot to say in his NFL career.

I'll go by the perspective of what a lot of my friends, Eagles fans, would say, loved the guy, understood always while he was gone, loved him when he came back, knew that he was going to be gone again. Now, a lot of them would say, I wish he was still there because he gave the team a lot. But keep one thing in mind. He's never there. Like, he's there for that year.

Yeah, and some of them, look, he made plays for the Eagles. They brought him back. He was loud, he talked, but he played really well for him. But then they let him go. Now, you could argue they didn't have as good a year the next year, but they did. The Houston one was wild. He said he got into it with a friend of the GM.

but I kind of respect the fact that he just will say what he feels. As someone who doesn't. I'm like, damn, dude, I see you doing that. But also it's like this has come at a cost because you have been around you. He is produced in this league, but he has also been on so many teams that there's a price to pay because of it.

Yeah, C.J. garner, Johnson, like he says f the critics, like, he is that guy that is only he tries to put his best foot forward for himself. Now. I think he's trying to do that. I thought it was very interesting. One of the points in the article was talking about that he's never been a captain because he doesn't lead the right way is what he says. And all about the sea is about selling jerseys. And he goes, you don't lead the right way. And he goes, my leadership is winning. And he's won a lot. Like, he is a Super bowl champion and nobody can take that away. And he has been led the league in interceptions two years. Like he. It just at times rubs people the wrong way.

So I'll be curious as how it. How it's handled with the Bills because some of it's going to depend on how he plays. Every.

Everybody is asked about him and they all are saying the same thing in June, May and June. It's like, oh, yeah, he's great. He's got a lot of juice. He's excited. And that may play really well. It might play for the whole year. He may be making plays, talking, but whatever. But when it doesn't go well or it doesn't go well in the room is I don't think CJ is going to change. Usually what happens is the team changes and they go, we've. We've seen enough.

Reading that article, how concerned were you about the expiration date in Buffalo?

I'm not worried about the expiration date because I think he's aware of what it is. I think the Bills are aware of what the expiration date is and the go out, make some plays for some turnovers and then move on.

Here's why I'm worried about the expiration date is because if he were to leave abruptly in season, like, what does that look like? Who is filling in? Where. Where does that go?

That is what I just. I would say I was wondering where you were going. What concerns me a little bit is a guy gets to a certain point in his career and he's just known as that guy. Like Draymond Green is an example.

And he. And he goes into it almost. Yes. And I wonder if we're like, reading this article. First of all, Tim does great job. And I knew, like, when he got a hold of it and he was just letting him cook, man, he was going and just walking and walking. I'm like, this is going to be good. And it is. It's very interesting to try to delve into the guy we've seen jump in the back of interviews already and talk a lot. And everybody talks about him. But I do wonder if sometimes the guy's like, this is my brand and I'm going to make my brand work. It's a big test for Jim Leonard and Joe Brady. And everybody wants the guys. You know, they say, well, the Bills didn't have those guys with the juice. Yeah, there's. There's ways to apply that, too. Like, Von had that when he came in. When Von was productive. Von talked a lot. It wasn't the same as cj But Von talks a lot. He does. Dion talks a lot. There are some Guys that talk, you always know what they think. You always.

I think that's a really interesting point, though, about that is a challenging player in the locker room for a first year head coach and for a first year defensive coordinator.
