Josh is an alien. Alien level. And then he's like, yeah, it sometimes takes guys, like, two months to figure out these things. He does it in two reps. You.
B
Know what I thought about from that? Coachable.
A
Yeah, that's it.

Hello, and welcome Back to the Buffalo Plus YouTube channel. Presented by Connors and Ferris, Mike Catalana, Dan Fates. I am Jenna Cotrell. We are going to recap Hard Knocks episode four, but before we do that, please be sure to check out Buffalo Plus Live. Oh, I was gonna do Buffalo Plus Live September 4th at the Thirsty Turtle in Victor. We're gonna do a live taping or live recording of our podcast. There's going to be a meet and greet as well. Five to seven, our meet and greet. We're going to record the pod after, and then. Then the NFL season starts, so we want to have you there. We also would love if you could please, like, comment, subscribe, and share as well. We always appreciate that. All right, gentlemen, episode four of Hard Knocks. Mike, what you think of. Of tonight's episode?
A
There were parts I really liked. I. I thought it was a little bit of rehash of some of the stuff. I. It was not my favorite episode at all. It might have been. Might have been my least.
C
I agree. I agree. I know normally we start a lot and we try and do this, like, chronologically, but I do think it's worth noting. Jimmy Charlo just seems like an incredible, incredible person. Like, the fact that he's staying there, the shuttle, you know, he doesn't have a car, all these kind of things. And staying at the facility this late is awesome. But besides that, like. All right, yeah, we're rehashing Jamarcus Ingram. We're rehashing Buffalo Joe. Like what? I don't know.
B
This. This was my second favorite episode.
A
Okay, so I want you to start and tell us why.
B
Okay. Well, I liked that they. Well, I get it. They did, like, talk to Jamarcus Ingram a little bit. They touched on Jimmy Charlo as well. Buffalo Joe, like, all that stuff. I just thought it was a cool episode, the way they did it in terms of having a little bit about Zach Davidson, a little bit about Shane Buchelle. I don't know. I have my notes as well. I just really like how McDermott is coming across in this, too. Like, I think you see the side of him. I think people sometimes joke about, like, oh, the process. Yeah, we get it. All that stuff. But I think he's a really good leader and And I think you see that in him constantly questioning and asking, like, what makes a good team to, you know, Vince Carter. And then also, I thought it was really refreshing to have, you know, the meeting before the final preseason game, like, hey, you guys are winners. I'm proud of you. Like, little things like that. Because for a lot of the guys out on the field, this would be their last time playing football. And I just really like the message and the way that he has come across.
A
I agree with all of that. I. I think you're right. I just thought it was a little clunky, the show, because they were trying. It's funny, and we got some great comments here that we'll go over. But I thought it was funny that a lot of the guys they highlighted got cut today. Now some of them are coming back, so we'll see them again. But I. I understand what they're doing there because they start these narratives. People don't know the team. They aren't paying as much attention as all of you guys, Bills fans, to know that these guys got cut. They're just watching the show, like a show. So I. That didn't really take away. But to Dan's point on the Charlo stuff, I love the fact that you heard him say, I didn't do anything. When he picked up the fumble, it was so good because they're all telling him to go pose. I'm guessing army didn't do that very often when they got a turnover. So, yeah, that was cool. For his moment there, he was telling his dad, like, I never played linebacker that much. He was playing, like, slot. He's never done that. Him saying, I didn't do anything because he goes, I didn't even make the hit. And he got the fumble. So I thought that was cool.
B
Can we talk about how Jimmy Charlo's dad looks? Nothing of what I expected. The big beard, all that. I was like, yeah, I wasn't expecting that. I wasn't expecting clean cut, army kind of guy.
C
And Mike, it's Renee watched the episode with me, and she's like, oh, like, oh, it's this Jimmy Charlotte guy. Like, what's he been like? And I was like, well, actually, Mike and I got a chance to talk with him, and it was, like, just a great conversation.
A
Yeah.
C
Like, the fact. It was one of those conversations that it was, like, honest and it's. You know. And he kind of talked about it a little bit there with his dad of, like, when I got cut, like, I was pretty down, and my dad was the One that kept me motivated. My dad's the one that kept me going. And.
A
Yeah.
C
And that kind of stuff was like, man, like, still being a parent to a professional football player is something that you don't always hear about, you know? Yeah.
A
Oh, no, you. You're. You're a parent for a lot longer than that. He's a kid. No, I agree with you. That was cool. And that they got to come to the game and to see him was. Was cool. You know, it's funny, you guys, we were at practice when they ran.
C
They were awful. It's hard to put into words, like, that video and that I wrote my note down was like, fans don't see that stuff. And so fans see the game, they see a couple of posts from social media, from the team, and things like that, where it gets to be actual stuff, like, we get to film individuals, but. And Jenna, I think we did the video or we were all up there one of the days, and it was like. It was hard to put into words how bad of a football team they were that day. And Sean's like, we've averaged two of these a practice for 17 days, and we can't even snap the ball. And, like, all of this stuff. And it was like, people be like, oh, they've had such a great camp and things like that. It's like, you may have been there the. The one really good date, but they've had days where it hasn't always been good or, this guy should be doing this. And it's like, well, there's more to the story than just what you're seeing or what they're portraying.
A
And, Janet, I like the parts when, like, you hear KJ Hamler saying to himself, I. I was bad. Like, I can't remember his exact words, because while it's practice, it's not like it means so much to them.
B
Yeah.
A
You know, he's got his coach there with him saying, like, hey, like, I've heard the good things, like, you got to keep. Stay positive. And he's like, I get in my head, you can see where it is. I. I don't remember what KJ Went through in Denver with the heart thing, which was interesting to hear when a guy now has a little more perspective. But, you know, he was cut today, but I think there's a good chance he comes back on the practice squad again. So I like hearing those things. Even though we're right there, you know, they're. They're not miked up next to us, so we don't. We don't hear those.
B
And I think it was really cool because through the series, you've gotten to see KJ Hamler's personality. Like the scooter, the funny moments, the one liners, like, all that stuff. But today it was a little bit more of, like, what he went through and how scared he was and how, you know, he talks about. I. I feel like I'm not good enough. Like, the reality of, yes, he has a bright, bold personality, but, like, the mental struggles that come with being a professional athlete or just like, with the journey that he has been through to stay at this point and. And what will his future look like in terms of professional football? But I just thought it was. I don't know, I thought it really was cool.
C
I loved all of the biomechanical stuff.
A
Oh, I was just gonna say. And we were there at practice, and when you're just watching it, it's hard to really get what they're doing. I mean, I wrote down some of the things the coach was saying. It was hilarious the way he was talking to Josh and he was like. He basically was like, josh is an alien. Alien level. And then he's like, yeah, it sometimes takes guys, like two months to figure out these things. He does it in two reps. You.
B
Know what I thought about from that? Coachable.
A
Yes, that's it.
C
Jenna on a golf course.
B
Coachable, baby.
A
Coachable.
C
And I saw it all.
A
They go through that because, you know, you saw things with Mitch, like, it's not just like a coach saying to you, hey, you look better with this. He's like, we've measured you for the last couple years. Like, you've never done that before. So I thought that.
C
Yeah, I.
A
With you, I thought that stuff was cool to see.
C
I thought when he talked. I'm sorry, Jen, I've cut you off twice now.
B
No, this is. Jessica asked me how I get this volume in my hair. And between the podcast you filmed earlier today and Hard Knocks, I blew dry my hair. Jessica, it's the classic flip your hair upside down, brush up with the brush. So this is how you get the volume. Jessica, I use the shark.
A
You did not ask me that same question.
B
But Dan texted me, and I didn't text him back because I was like, I have 23 minutes to do this.
C
Jenna, did you say shark? Is it like a shark white?
B
Oh, no, it is shark.
A
I know the shark.
C
Yes, the biomechanical stuff. Talked about it was funny to see. We have seen that stuff like that goes on during press conferences. Like, we'll walk inside to get ready to talk to players after practice. And Josh will be going through that. Like, we've seen that he does that a few times over the years. We've talked to Josh about that. The cameras, the filming, all that biometric stuff. And. But he. To see the old video of Josh from 2019 and 2020, and it does look totally different. Josh said, like, he credits that guy with, like, his entire career right now was his life. Yeah. And so he goes. He went from chucking a rock to a thrower to a passer to now, like, this level was really kind of cool to see. I don't know. And again, I think Renee was next to me just like blown away because again, I think it's like football rough tumble. You just go out there and do it. And it's like there's so much minute intricacies. Yeah. That. That go into that level. And even somebody who is blessed as can be with the arm that he has. It's still fine tuning it. And then, of course, of course, he gets into his golf swing at the end, which just is.
A
Yes.
B
Perfect.
A
And he's probably corrects his golf swing in like two swings too. It's very annoying that he could do that. I. I put the. The comment up because I want to know why Charlo isn't in a hotel in Orchard Park. There's not that many in Orchard Park. And he's going probably right near the airport. That would be my guess. He's probably staying there.
B
Well, and too, like, the hotel room is a hotel room. You want to have a little bit more space.
A
And I think good, quiet spot, like being in the. In the place. So.
B
Well, the mechanics thing to me was obviously really cool to see, but the cutaways of Josh when they showed him and his progression from, like, when he was younger. Don't you forget how young he looked like.
C
And raw.
B
Yeah. Just. Just like, I know it's year eight for him and we've been covering Josh the entirety of his career, but it's like, wow. You think about how raw battalion he was to where he is now an NFL mvp, but like the physical maturation process of just like how different he looks to how much of a leader he looks like, how much of a actual man he looks like. Whereas before he was, you know, a child.
A
Yeah, but. But, you know, there are guys with his ability that have done well in the league. Not totally his ability, but with a lot of ability. But they get by on that. They're good. They have a nice career. But, you know, people say, well, how did Josh do it? Well, you can even see it now. He's MVP of the league. Like, he doesn't need. Need to do that. He does in a way, if you want to get better. But, like, he's already at that level. He's gotten paid. He's won the mvp. He's done all that, but he's focused on those little things that maybe make that big of a difference. And it also. It's a big thing to preventing injuries. That's what he said the other day when we were at camp when he said he was doing it. Because sometimes those throwing motions, they get in bad habits.
B
Yeah.
A
And it can cause something they throw. They throw the ball a lot. It's not surprising to you guys, but they throw it a lot. And if you're throwing it wrong or at least a little off can cause a problem.
B
Sometimes I am shocked by how much Josh Allen throws the ball.
A
Yeah.
B
Like, in practice, every single day. Like, he is never taking a veteran day off. The amount of reps that he gets when he gets frustrated, the more reps that he will take. Like, it is pretty astounding to me how many reps he does take on. I would be curious, like, in a season, how many reps he takes.
A
Yeah. And then. And add into. You know, even when they're throwing into the. To the nets, it's just.
B
Yeah.
A
Throw, throw, throw, throw. I. I think about that at least three.
B
Like, it's at least three footballs a time. At least three. And you're going through multiple times. And that's just one drill to warm up. Is it Winston?
C
Yeah. Winston's gonna hack up a hairball. And it's just.
A
Sorry, for those who don't know, Winston's cat.
C
He'S just struggling under here.
A
Yeah, this is good. I wonder if the Bills were annoyed that they were paying the guy for Josh to ask him about golf. We can always ask about golf.
B
Yeah.
A
We'll always find a way to make it about the golf swing.
C
All right, so I have my. One. I have two big criticisms from this episode.
A
Oh, here we go.
C
I was very excited. I had tweeted out. I couldn't wait to see their angle of the Tyrell Shavers touchdown catch. And the reaction. And they showed the reaction from KJ and Buchelle, and that was so disappointing to me. That was such. Even if I know they weren't profiling Shavers, but that could have been a moment where it's like, Tyrell Shavers is another guy that's trying to make the team. And that guy made the biggest play of his career. And it was like, great pass, Shane. And you're like, that's not what I wanted to see. I wanted to see the emotion of the entire team coming out to congratulate Shavers and to see him run over to the sideline and be fired up. That was disappointing to me. Where I thought they could have. While they weren't focused on that, they could have fit that into the storyline of the game.
A
Yeah, I. I bet you there's more on Shavers in the final episode.
B
I agree. But I get what you're saying, because it's like, great video is great video and you can use that as much as you want, in my opinion.
A
Like, yeah.
B
The amount of camera angles that they would have, like, just the excitement and the pure emotion of that. I get why you would think maybe NFL. I thought the same thing where I. I was expecting them to do the cutaway of like, just like the intense excitement and Shavers and then the handshake with Josh and then you're like, oh, okay.
C
Celebration more than Shaver celebrating. I was like, that's not what I want. That's not what I'm focused on.
A
Yeah, yeah, I know.
B
And I thought it was interesting after the game when McDermott was like, oh, I'm going to call out some players. He called out. They let. They had it. So it was Charlo. They had Zach Davidson. And I'm like, they didn't mention Shavers. Now, I'm sure that Sean mentioned Shavers, but I just think that was kind of interesting too, where I was like.
A
Hm, Maybe they're just building up for another storyline, I would hope. Right. Because Shavers is a great one, by the way. I like that they gave a little time to Adai Jamil Alai, the.
B
Yes.
A
Defensive backs coach.
B
Yeah.
A
I think that man's gonna. Someday he's gonna be a head coach. I really think he is. And at. Dr. Adam Henry, the wide receivers coach, has his doctorate now, so he got a little time in there. It's nice to see the other assistant coaches get a little. Get a little run in the show and you see them in the meetings and when they were talking about Trey. That's why I love the meetings.
B
Yeah.
A
Like when I've. When a kid. A young. I came. Could you. I couldn't tell. I was sort of distracted a little bit when I was listening to it. Which young player was saying Hairston, was it okay? He was like, it bothers Trey this much. Ten years into the league when he has a bad rep. And I thought that was cool that they bring that up, you know, to the players.
B
But isn't that shocking to you, like, a little bit? Not that, not that Trey was upset, but isn't it shocking, like, I mean, Max Hairston has played football for a long time. Like, wouldn't people always be frustrated if they're a great player and they didn't have a good rep?
A
I, I, I agree with you in a way, but my guess is it's pretty easy to be at a high level, even at a college. Right. And you're golden and you're going to the league and it's the next step. I'm not saying Max is this way. I'm just saying is you would think I get in the league, and we're not talking about a year or two. We were talking about a decade in the league. And to see that he's that way and taking those things that serious. I guarantee you, I would guarantee you these players take practice much more seriously in the pros than they ever did in college.
B
Yeah, that's fair.
A
So it's got to be like, every rep, every time, focused that way. That's how you, that's how you stay in the league. So I, I agree with you.
B
Maybe it was like a little like, aw, shucks. Like, yeah, like, this is a guy that's obviously played for a long time in the league. But I guess I was kind of surprised that he was so, like, wow, man. Because I feel like that's kind of, to me, like, you might think he'd.
A
Think I had a bad game, a bad quarter, a bad thing in the game. But here's a rap in practice, I think that's what they were focused on.
B
But, yeah, I know what they were focused on. I'm just saying I was, I was a little surprised.
A
I did not say that.
C
You didn't have to, by the way.
A
Go ahead. I was going to tell you my, maybe my favorite moment of the show.
C
My favorite moment is just in general. Like, Jen and I shoot all of the games. We each get really good video. You try and push yourself to, like, shoot, like, NFL Films. Their shots of the tight spiral are just incredible. You and I know it's partly it's the way that it's edited in all of that software that they have, but, man, is it awesome when you just see perfectly centered in frame, ball perfectly in focus, spiraling through the air.
A
You're like, awesome.
C
Oh, it's football.
B
I also loved how they use, like, the chef's table music.
C
Yeah.
B
I don't know if you guys ever watch that show, but, like, that. For some of the sequencing shots, I was like that. That was pretty cool.
A
Yeah. I mean, those camera setups are, like. They are incredible.
C
130, 000 cameras.
A
Cameras. That's the. That's how they. You look back at old, old NFL films. I mean, it's the stuff I grew up watching. That was their calling card. Like, they were always able to get that. That was Steve Sable back in the day. And talking about that. My favorite part was Sean telling James Cook, you got no rhythm, bro. I thought that was.
B
That was a. That was funny.
A
Yeah.
C
Oh, and I just realized I have another gripe, because I didn't get to my second one. My third gripe will go to three, and then I'll go back to two. I'm sorry. I don't really care about Tracy McGrady or Vince Carter.
A
Yeah, I'm with you on that.
C
I, like, they showed them at the. At Pula's house for the. The meet. You know, the party.
B
Yeah.
C
Renee's like, who are they? And I was like, they're NBA hall of Famers. That's awesome. They are limited partners in a group that bought a minority stake.
A
I.
C
It was cool the first time seeing Vince Carter. Jen, I know you got to talk to him. The one practice where, you know, he raved about Josh Allen, but, like, to see five Minutes for Sean being like, what's. What's it like to be a leader? And you're like, like, yeah, I want to know. I wanted to know more about Shavers. I wanted to know more about these guys that were, like, being talked about, where I was just kind of like, yeah. Oh, the Panic at the Disco song. That was sweet. The way they did that edit was very cool. With Dion and Josh singing. That was cool. They showed the fight. They didn't show Trey's injury. I was a little surprised about that.
B
I was wondering if that would be.
A
Well, yeah, they might have not had it. And then. And then maybe everything, though. They do. Amen.
C
And it was on a regular rap, so. Yeah, I don't know. That was surprising. And then, look, we love. You love Liv.
A
Right?
C
We love Liv Schreiber. I. I also don't know if he's sarcastic. It's hard to tell with his tone. That was Winston. He goes, zach Davidson might be a pretty good punter, but he may be an even better tight end. And I was like, well, I would hope so. He's on an NFL roster to be a tight end. Was this one of those things where I think. Was that sarcasm live? Because I can't tell with his tone.
B
That's really funny. The bike part was interesting with Zach Davidson.
C
Yeah.
B
I was like, wow, that. That is.
C
And no, I'm not Zach Davidson.
A
You. You did. People were mentioning. You were. So you were focused, and there was a big focus on Dan in this episode.
B
Yeah. I thought the Casey Rogers animals a little bit was cute.
C
Yeah.
B
Oh, my God, Michael.
A
Not the thing. It's just. I don't. That part at this point, that would have been like, first episode stuff. Yeah. Second episode.
B
I thought it was nice, though. You're gonna show me a puppy, I'm gonna be happy.
A
Like, yeah, that is pretty soon the puppies were cool. And Casey Rogers. That's cool.
B
But, like, not gonna lie, I was like, Zach.
C
Also based off that punt. Awesome. Like, very cool moment for a guy that obviously did it at a Division 2 level. So it's not like he punted in Pop Warner, but I did thoroughly enjoy, like, the. That moment of, like, all the guys in the sidelines being like, wow. And it was like cutaways of, like, what a pun. What a pun. Way to go, Zach. It was just so funny the way that they cut it together. I was like, little things like that ball go through the air.
B
Wow. The Frank Gore stuff I thought was interesting. I wish I honestly expected them to touch on his story a little bit earlier on and, like, have it be more of a focal point, because I think he's had some nice moments, especially in some of preseason games.
A
Dan fates with a 61 yard punt.
B
Wow. Don't give that to Dan's ego. Don't. Don't you do that.
C
I don't see it. My wife doesn't see it either. But I've gotten tagged in quite a bit of Zach Davidson content.
B
It wasn't until someone told me, and I was like, oh, I could see it.
A
Didn't a player drag you over there?
C
I was introduced to Zach Davidson two years ago in the locker room. I believe it was Shaq Lawson was like, hey, come over here. And you're like, what is Shaq dragging me over to do in the locker room? They're like, this guy looks like you. We just sat there and went, what's up? Hey, how are you? Good talk. Nice to meet you. And then we walked away.
B
Doxy out there.
C
Yeah.
B
That's pretty good. Anything else?
A
No. We recorded an episode about the cuts. I know a lot of people were on here will be at practice. This would be for. Of the Wednesday practice, which is later in the day because they have to wait till the waivers clear to see, you know, then they start signing guys to the practice squad. So we'll see what it is. And then I just want to say, you know, there's still going to be moves between now and the end of the year. I think we'll see how it ended the year, end of the preseason or end of the practice time before they get to the first game of the year. So we'll see. They got another week. This is where it's changed since they got rid of that fourth game where you've got this extra bit of time. So they've had a couple of days off and then we'll see. We'll see what happens.
B
Yeah. There's one more thing that I thought, oh, did you guys see the mini trampoline in the locker room?
C
I just thought that was Josh Palmer chilling on it.
B
Yeah. I just thought that was kind of cool.
C
Renee looks at me and she goes, what does that do? Increase your heart rate? And I go, I don't. I. I don't. Renee. I think he's just bouncing on a trampoline because he's bored and not playing. I think that was just like my five year old daughter's. Like a trampoline was like, I'll just bounce.
A
Yeah. Because he wasn't. He wasn't doing anything in the game, so.
B
No, he was not. He certainly was not.
C
Yeah. Like mid episode. Meh.
B
I thought it wasn't bad.
A
Well, we had a few people say they've enjoyed all of them, that Dan and I are being too critical. Haters.
B
Haters.
A
By the way, we didn't make this episode again. Dan did. By himself, the punter. But yeah, didn't make it sailed. Bean's gotten a lot of air time in this show. Just not on my patio.
B
That's. Yeah. Last thing on. Jimmy Charlo. He's just the most McDermott guy ever.
A
Yeah.
B
Like I. It's just unbelievable to me.
A
Yeah.
C
I think. I think there's a chance he gets picked up somewhere else. I was. That was maybe the one surprise that I thought when I did my 53, which means absolutely nothing. I had him as just a core special teamer that could adapt that literally everywhere. Because as. As Bean said, he's a football player. That was very cool to see him being out on the field and being like, am I going? And they're like, no, like he doesn't Even know what he's supposed to be doing. And he's out on a football field.
A
Yeah.
C
At the NFL level. Was so crazy and cool to see. You know, we're trying to understand. You know, people break down all 22. Is this guy supposed to go here? It's like there's sometimes when the guys don't even know where they're supposed to go. So how are you going to analyze what's going on when you're not in the huddle?
B
Yeah.
A
Yeah, they didn't. They didn't have that opportunity to. To get him ready and. And when guys were down, I. I think that's kind of cool for him. I would say two teams to watch out for to pick him up are the Patriots and the Giants, because to me, yeah, those were the teams that were worked out.
B
There's a lot of Philly in that. They've those.
A
That they. They worked him out. And, you know, sometimes those teams have been kind of dumb, and then they're like, oh, hey, this charlo looks pretty good. And they're like, oh, yeah, we had that guy in the building. In the building.
C
Well, I wonder if the jets come back now and seeing that he's healthy. I mean, he was there before when he tore his ACL or whatever, so. But.
A
But they have to put him on the 53.
B
Yes.
C
And he can't.
A
You know, sometimes people think they can just sign him to the practice squad. The Bills have the.
C
No.
A
Anybody? Well, they. They can because you're going to clear waivers. But you would think the Bills would have.
B
Yeah.
A
The first opera opportunity. They could claim him off of waivers first and then put him on the 53 for their team.
B
So Dan, spell neighbor.
C
They just spelled it N, E, I, G, H, B, O, R. Okay.
B
Proud of you.
C
Oh, words.
B
I was like, that's a hard word. That's.
A
Child or cat.
C
Shane's up.
B
Oh.
C

B
What do you want? Do you want to go?
C

B
Okay, well, we're just gonna tell.
A
We're wrapping up anyhow. There he goes.
B
All right. For Dan on.
A
He punts and he takes care of his kids. Look at him. There he goes.

About our live event.
A
Yes. Live event coming up. It would be. Well, today is what, Tuesday, Late a week from Thursday. Think of it, too. It's the first night of the regular season of the NFL, but you come spend part of it with us. If you're anywhere in the Rochester area, you can come from wherever. We're in Victor. Thirsty Turtle. We were there last year. I think the plan is we're going to be in the outside space, especially if the weather is good. They got a beautiful outside space. We're going to do a little meet and greet from 5 to 7, then we're going to do the podcast live from 7 to 8. We'd love to meet everybody if they want to come out. I think they'll have some special things going on. So Thirsty Turtle, we'll be promoting it, too. We'll put something up on the channel, too. But, yeah, come see us.
B
Yeah, we'd love to hang out with everyone, meet everyone. Just do the pod and just get to meet everyone. It's always a fun night. All right. For Mike, for Dan, who's being dad of the year.
A
Yeah.

They provide candid opinions about the episode's structure, discuss standout characters, and offer unique locker room perspectives informed by years of Bills reporting.
This episode of Buffalo Plus delivers a spirited, behind-the-scenes critique of Hard Knocks’ depiction of the Buffalo Bills, mingling professional insights with humor and candid fan frustration. The team highlights the standout personal stories, especially those of Jimmy Charlo and KJ Hamler, and lauds the show’s access to Allen’s developmental journey.
